  • A very short prelude in C minor composed by Georg Vierling (5 September 1820 - 1 June 1901). Vierling was born in Frankenthal, Germany and studied music with Johann Christian Heinrich Rinck. In 1853 Vierling founded the Bach Verein in Berlin, and in 1859 he became Director of Music at the Royal Academy of the Arts in Berlin.
Played on the sample set of the 2012 Kamiński organ located at St. Anne's church in Długa Kościelna, Poland. Sample set by Piotr Grabowski.

Very beautiful prelude. Although short, it shows an exceptional intensity and spirituality.

Hi, thanks for listening. Vierling is one of these "unknown" composers, but his repertoire is pretty good, actually. He wrote a lot of these short versets, preludes, postludes, etc. I appreciate your comment. Thank you.

@@thehalf-bakedorganist Hi, it is I who thank you for giving me the opportunity to introduce myself to this "illustrious unknown". This prelude is very beautiful, as I think all the rest of his musical production. Unfortunately I couldn't find the score of this prelude on the internet, so I had to download the video with the score you posted in order to then be able to transcribe it with the "Finale" program. I've been playing this prelude since yesterday and every time I find it more and more beautiful! If you have any suggestions where to find Vierling's scores, I really thank you. Greetings from Italy.

@@michelemarchese259 Actually, the score to this piece is in the Bungart book, a compilation of various short pieces for organ, which you can find for free on IMSLP.org.

This is lovely. I like these little short pieces as they are good to play around with once its been played through as written.
I might write a variation type of piece off the back of this one.

A wonderful small praeludium, very suitable as a short interlude during a service. I wish I had known this one, or ineed that entire book you mention, when I was still playing organ. It would have come in very handy indeed. I like your subdued registration, even though it seems at odds with the score saying to use strong voices ? If I can suggest one small point of improvement it would be to have a little caesura before the closing chord, so that it stands outs rather than being kind of glued to the previous note.

I have to admit that I am often quite guilty of not following the recommended registrations, among many other things. I have a habit of just playing things the way I hear or feel them. I'm trying to be more cognizant of this, however. Thank you very much for your suggestion about the caesura. This is the kind of subtle thing that I miss a lot because I'm self-taught and basically play to myself. It's not the kind of thing that is obvious to me. So, I appreciate your remarks. Thanks for commenting.

@@thehalf-bakedorganist In general it is good practice on an organ to leave some air between organ notes. because the tones tend to 'overlap' a bit if you don't. A closing chord is usually played after a clearly audible short pause.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I have no idea how this piece might be used. It's a bit solemn in tone, and I think it's appropriate in many applications (as are many such short pieces).

I see "Andante", but it would help if it were played twice as fast, and maybe with a fuller registration ("Mit starken Stimmen" = "With strong voices").

Hi, thanks for your comment. I have a habit of not quite following the tempo and registration indications. Rightly or wrongly, I sometimes just play it the way I hear it in my mind. It's just the way I tend to interpret things.
