The Half-baked Organist
Канада
Добавлен 8 янв 2014
I am a self-taught musician who started playing music at a late age. I have lots of bad musical habits. I employ many unorthodox techniques. I make innumerable mistakes. I hardly, if ever, really know what I'm doing. And I struggle terribly with every single piece I play. There are no easy pieces for me. Hence, my musical ability is half-baked at the best of times. But I love music, and I love playing my Hauptwerk organ and harpsichord.
Since there are so many musicians on RUclips already, who are far more talented than I, playing the most famous and sophisticated pieces, I thought it might be worthwhile to create a channel on which to present, though not exclusively, more obscure pieces seldom heard today by little known or long forgotten composers as well as to share my musical experiences with similarly situated "late learners". I welcome all comments on how I might improve my playing.
Thanks for stopping in.

A very short one-minute prelude in G minor composed by Johann Christian Heinrich Rinck (18 February 1770 - 23 July 1846). Rinck studied with Johann Christian Kittel (1732-1809), who himself was a pupil of Johann Sebastian Bach, and eventually became kantor at the music school in Darmstadt, Germany where he was also a court organist from 1813. Charles Gounod (arr. A. Bruneau) - Elevation

This elevation was composed by Charles Gounod (1818 - 1893) and arranged for organ by Alexandre Bruneau (1823 - 1899). Gounod is best known for his operas, in particular "Faust". But, though prolific, Gounod's religious music, from which I believe this piece comes, became unfashionable in the 20th century and little of it is regularly heard. Bruneau was born in Berry, France and served as organ...

Great piece. I wasn’t able to track this one down. Does it come from a collection?
Hi, thanks for listening and commenting. If I recall, it was in Bungart's compilation. You can find it on IMSLP.org.
@@thehalf-bakedorganist thanks I will look there.
Very expressive and heartfelt performance.
Thank you, Alberto. I really appreciate your comment.

1st... Wow, full of grief, very well played!
Thank you very much for listening and commenting.
Wonderful. Thank you. I am an older self-taught church organist, and am incapable of sight-reading, but I understand basic music theory and I play from the heart, with lots of improvisation. Both of the previous very skilled organists at our church tell me that they think that I am a "better-truer" organist, even though they can sight-read perfectly. Perhaps Beethoven said it best when he wrote: "To play a wrong note is immaterial. To play without passion is inexcusable." ❤🎹
Hi, thank you for this comment. I'm glad you stopped in for a listen. Cheers.
A lovely piece. Sounded wonderful. It didn't need a bigger sounding organ.
Hi, thank you for listening and commenting. Much appreciated.
You are the best organist in the world as I know👏👏👏
You must not know very many organists at all then. But thanks for your kind comment and for always listening.
Very beautiful piece with the harmonium, performed with great musicality.
Thanks, Alberto, for your generous comment.
Well played. Lovely piece too!
Thanks for listening and commenting.
I didn't think this sound sample would sound so beautiful. How long ago and with what little knowledge I made this little sound sample. I congratulate you on this beautiful performance, and this performance strengthens me in my efforts to preserve these lost sounds by sampling small and unknown instruments and introduce them to the more fortunate - but not happier - part of the world. (Augustine)
It's a wonderful instrument, Augustine, and I'm very happy to be able to play it. Thanks so much for all your efforts.
where can I buy the sheetmusic from this piece?,,..Found al lot of music from Battmann but not this piece.
Hi, I really don't know where I got this. It was just a stray piece of music in my collection, and I have no idea where it came from. I had typeset it some time ago, but I seem to have misplaced that, too. So, I don't have any information about this.
My previous comment got deleted, maybe because there was an outside link? Anyway, according to Frederic Munoz (another organist on youtube who posted an interpretation of this piece as well), it's from "L'écho des chapelles", volume 2. It can be found on the website of the BNF (National Library of France). You can order a PDF, but they have to make it themselves by scanning the original document, so it's expensive (45 euros for the whole book as I saw). So, if I were you I would write to Frederic Munoz to see if he can send you a scan.
When he's not protecting Gotham, he's writing organ music
So true! Thanks for listening.
You inspire me a lot, never stop playing my friend! Keep bringing joy to this world
Thanks a lot for your kind comment. I'm very happy to hear that. Cheers.
Very expressive performance.
Thank you, Alberto.
I've listened with earphone. Great one indeed. Please continue to enjoy playing a lot of works.
Thanks for your comment. Actually, it makes a big difference in quality of sound depending on how you listen. The Hauptwerk software and the modern sample sets are very good. You can really miss a lot of detail in the organ sounds if you don't have quality earphones or speakers. It makes a world of difference.
Did I detect sone echoes of the Chopin Funeral March?
It certainly is reminiscent of Chopin. But having looked at a lot of funeral pieces, I think they all kind of follow a similar pattern: a march followed by a trio or interlude and back to the march. I quite like them actually. Thanks for listening and commenting.
Beautiful🙂 Are the notes available?
Thank you for listening. Yes, the sheet music for this and other Bruneau pieces I play are freely available for download on IMSLP or the National Library of France. (I don't recall specifically from which I got this particular piece, however.)
@@thehalf-bakedorganist I can't find notes on IMSLP...🤷🏻♂️
@@karolwasilewski6528 Well, if it's not on IMSLP, then I must have found on the National Library of France website.
Wow... The Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House and I are both in agreement - your playing was very expressive and atmospheric - perfect score for the haunting that me and Phants plan to do tonight. (Ha Ha, it was a joke, but your musical offering was not a joke - enjoyed this very much!)...
Thanks for your comment. I have to agree that there is a bit of a "Phantom of the Opera" like quality to the piece.
Very beautiful and expressive performance.
Thanks, Alberto.
Wonderful piece. New to me, but worth it to practise it soon. Well done 👍
Thanks for listening and commenting.
Not on imslp :(
Sorry, my mistake. I think I downloaded this from the Bibliotheque nationale de France.
Oh wow, this is very good. Battmann deserves more appreciation I think.
I agree. Thanks for listening and commenting.
Hello, I think very highly of your project and your purpose. This particular piece hits me for its stunning simplicity and yet it is beautiful and sweet. Thank you for letting us discover such little gems. I am currently using pieces like this in church practice and your channel leads me to improve myself. Thank you very much, keep it up!
Thanks so much for your kind comment. I'm glad your enjoying this music.
Beautiful piece and a timeless feel, enjoyable work.
Thank you very much for your comment.
Another full-baked performance that set the mood for me - I was transported back (through memories) to the church of my younger years. Many thanks for your artistry!
Thank you for your kind comment. I'm very glad you enjoyed the piece.
Beautiful piece, excellent execution.
Thanks, Alberto. Much appreciated.
Rather a fine piece. I had no idea Battmann had written anything as good as this.
Thanks for commenting. It was a pleasant discovery for me, too. Never played any Battmann pieces before. I'll be uploading others soon, too.
I feel that you are really enjoying. I like your long version. Please continue.

I enjoy your videos. I had a wonderful collection of organ sheet music I donated when I moved across country. Now I am having to repurchase. Can you suggest a collection with this in it that can be purchased? Thank you.
I downloaded this collection from IMSLP.org, I think. I'm not sure if this music is even in print any longer. It would be nice to have brand new, crisp sheet music for this because the online scanned music is not of high quality, unfortunately.

Rinck’s work needs to be more popular. It’s so beautiful, and approachable, and useful for liturgical work. As an organist, I use his music all the time. Flor Peeters is another composer whose work should be more popular.
Thanks for your comment. I quite agree about Rinck. He composed many forgotten gems.
Short but sweet!
