When we were traveling we got the vaccines against hepatitis A & B, especially as were traveling at the time into the jungle in Panama.
One advantage of being 65 to 70 in Ontario Canada some vaccines are free, it just takes a little effort to contact your doctor and have them prescribe these vaccinations.

To me one of the most important health concerns is staying close to your medical facilities. I know people who have retired to cottage country but it’s miles to even a doctors office. When you need procedures or scans it’s good to be near the hospital.

That’s a major reason we are staying in the city.

I understand your hesitation with statins. I've had difficulty with so many medications myself. It's been difficult to regulate my high blood pressure. I've gone through at least a dozen medicines that caused me some sort of discomfort that was intolerable. Diet and exercise makes big difference. The older I get the more important it has become. I'm now 70 years old so having a life worth living is of utmost importance. Keep investigating, be proactive to find what works for you.

So great how open and transparent you are. I'm female and 60 and here is my health maintenance - 100% plant based (vegan) and never worry about cholesterol or coronary diseases. I take D3, C, Mag and digestive enzymes with every meal. As we age we have less acid in the gut which triggers enzymes to be released. Over everything digestive enzymes is my #1 recommendation and Vit D3. Thanks for sharing with us again this week. Hugs from Huntsville ON

@@cindymcdonald8244 Hi Cindy - any high end plant digestive enzymes will do. Organika is a good brand, Roots, etc but if money is tight any brand will do.

Being vegan, you don’t supplement B12?

    • @BA-yo3vz
      @BA-yo3vz 2 года назад +6

@@ReggieLouise hi there. yes I do for sure. Forgot to mention that. Whether vegan or not, lots of non vegans are low in that too. Animals are injected with b12. B12 used to be found in soil/dirt and unwashed vegetation but it’s been eroded away with factory farming. I just eliminate the middle man (animals) and supplement.

About three years ago I woke up with a rash on my forehead where it rests on the pillow. We had been traveling, staying in B&B's, so bed bugs sprang to mind and google showed images that exactly matched. Terrible, it would cost a fortune to eradicate and the owner, who lived in the other half of the house, would be furious. Went to the emergency department at the hospital to confirm and when the doctor said "shingles" it was such a relief. Never has anybody been so happy to have shingles.
The next day my eyelid had swollen up so much I couldn't see and I looked like Charles Laughton in the Hunchback of Notre Dame in the old movie. Luckily it cleared up in a couple of weeks and the rash on my forehead faded after about a year, but I know it can be dangerous and permanently painful.

I'm sorry to hear of your current health issues....I can relate. My husband and my myself ate in our 70's and have struggled with our own health. This has greatly impacted out retirement years. We have both been "trying" to protect of health living a healthy lifestyle... our diet, constant exercise, lots of sleep etc. We do not EVER have vaccines of any kind,. We are instead proactive in our lifestyle, eating the Keto Diet (my husband) and the AIP (Autoimmune Protocol - me) taking the supplements our blood labs (and my doctor) recommends and keeping our vitamin D levels between 60 and 80. We have a 8-prong health plan that we use to keep our metabolic system healthy which includes 1) A non-inflammatory Diet, 2) Detox 3) Exercise 4) High quality sleep 7) Socialization 8) Supplementing our vitamins, minerals and micronutrients. (we also drink no alcohol or caffeine, do not smoke.) We have NO heart issues, no insulin issues, no cholesterol issues, no blood pressure issues. We are working at the "root cause" level which is PROACTIVE rather than reactive. Not too bad for ages 72 and 78!!

Retirement in the summer is the absolute best. I recall all those work days when I missed out by being inside all day. As far as health, I can say that for a long time I tried control of my cholesterol by diet, sometimes successfully for a while , but then I had a heart attack and surgery. Now I keep my LDL well below 100 with the right statin and I wish I had done it long ago. I realize now that you only have one go round with your health. I wish you well.

Statins for cholesterol can certainly cause leg cramps or sort of restless leg symptoms. But there are many different kinds. My son and I both tried about three different statins before we had success. I have also had doctors tell me that taking coQ10 supplement helps with leg discomfort. Prior to starting on cholesterol meds I was able to delay it for a year or two by cutting out French fries, fried fish and donuts. I am 73 and my son is 47 by the way.

In Australia the Shingles is free once you turn 70, so I will be booking my husband in for a birthday present later this year. You can get it for free if immuno-compromised after 60. Many people are Vitamin D deficient, especially living in high lattitudes, and it helps prevent so many conditions, its a great idea to take it.

Under NHS scheme, almost every man over 60 is eligible (or encouraged?) to take statin. While high level of HDL can counter balance undesired effect of LDL, it will not lower the absolute reading of the latter.

Hey guys. I've said before that all this planning, saving, sacrificing, etc for retirement doesn't matter if your health is so poor you can't function. I find that most people aren't as proactive with their health as they should be. My diet covers all my needs, but I still take a B Complex, 5000 units of D3, and Omega 3 capsules every day. I also train 3 days a week at the gym and walk about 15-20kms per week. Keep healthy you two. I still want to have that drink in Portugal in a few years.

Stress is the biggest problem to avoid disease. I’ve had my go around with various illnesses and watching my parents suffer I don’t always run to the doctor. I try and get my rest, avoid carbs, especially processed, live life without fear, and exercise. Stay positive, laugh, and supplement with vitamins. Itami c, d3, fish oil, and zinc. The last thing i want is to be on medications.

Thank you for this great public service announcement Tina and Norm. My 88 year old mom who had the original shingles vaccine many years ago came down with it when she was about 84. I can assure anyone who is on the fence about this that it is NOT something you want. She developed the rash on her forehead and scalp. Even now, years later, she still has some nerve damage but thankfully it's not too bad. My wife and I got the Shingrix vaccine AND booster a couple of years ago. Also the pneumonia vaccine. If it's available perhaps renting a pontoon boat for a few outings might make sense just to see if you want to go ahead and purchase one and all the costs that go along with becoming a captain and captain's mate.. Sometimes a seasonal toy (a short season at that in the Bruce) is better to rent for the occasions when the weather does cooperate and you're not stuck selling it IF you find it's too much hassle to maintain and save the money on the dock rental, insurance and purchase price and just put that towards a once a week rental or 5 times a month rental for an hour to two.

Am at the age where the Shingrix shot is free in Ontario. However, it was not free as had to have the pharmacist give the injection as I do not have a family physician anymore (though on a list for a new one for about 3 years). Apparently you need a second Shingrix shot after 2-6 months, so if you know anyway around that fee then for the second shot, please let me know.

Hi Tina/Norm, great to see you taking video outdoors. Generally we watch your video over lunch every Saturday but broke that tradition today, watched over dinner.
We are in our 50’s and our doctor recommended to take Shingrix and Prevnar shots for anyone over 50. I took Prevnar first, about 115.00, then both Shingrix shots about 3 months apart, about 145 each shot, and my medical insurance covered both.
Right now we are getting Twinrix vaccinations for hepatitis, 2 of 3 are done as the 3rd one is 6 months after the second shot. My wife will take Shingrix and Prevnar after Twinrix is done. Reason for Twinrix is to have protection against hepatitis A and B as our blood tests showed lack of protection. It’s highly recommended for those traveling. We also take vitamin D3 and other supplements as needed. Weather is hot, enjoy the weekend🍺🍷♥️

Hi Norm and Tina. Nice you asked hope you don’t mind what worked me health wise that I’ve been following about 5 years now. I’m 64 and my husband is 72. Cholesterol was high at and my lDL was also high and I’d always worried that it would get higher. Well after watching Forks Over Knives and What the Health, two whole food plant documentaries I took the plunge and never looked back. Both my husbands and my lab work has since been stellar and my cholesterol dropped 60 points within six months and my LDL dropped to 85. My husband lost 25 pounds without trying to a healthy 23 BMI and I dropped about 7 pounds. We eat a mountain of food always and never feel deprived. We have a ton of energy too…I walk at least 13000 steps daily and more on weekends because we have lots of energy. Since then I’ve been following mostly healthy plant based RUclips channels such as PCRM, Bob and Fran who overcame enormous medical challenges and who are in their 80s and promoting their plant based lifestyle, among countless others. These channels keep me motivated and in good company. I used to crave a big steak back in the day and have completely lost those cravings and eat my GBOMBS (Dr Joel Furhman’s acronym) which are greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries and seeds every day to maintain my health. I stopped all supplements except Vitamin D3 and B12.I hope whatever path you and your viewers take brings great health and longevity. It’s never too late to try something new.

I don’t like the side effects at all. Causes bone and joint pain, but I need to get my bad cholesterol under control. This combined with HBP, I control with meds as well. I am on a plant base whole food diet. I am working on getting my health under control. I take 2 vitamin C complex 2000 mg. Daily, and D3 -10,000 units. This works! Great video, love the change! You guys look great!!!

Hello! I had shingles when I was about 58, it’s the Post Herpetic Neuralgia that sometimes accompany it that is AGONY. Honestly, I was screaming and had to go to A&E and eventually they put me on a tramadol drip for the pain.
They will not give it under 70 in Uk, even if you will pay for it . The same here in Bulgaria…. I for one would not be able to live with that pain. Never known anything like it. Now I know what pain is….

I just turned 50. I had shingles at 39. It was extremely painful. My dermatologist gave me Valtrex because I was in early enough stages and it stopped the progression. I then was proscribed a topical solution made by a compound pharmacist that really soothed the breakout area and helped with the pain. It cost $600! After it was applied, I had no complaints about the cost. Since I just turned 50 I haven't received the vaccine for shingles yet. Waiting to talk to my doctor and decide then.
As far as Statin medications, I was prescribed one because of family history. It did not agree with me either. I went to the dark side as my wife says. I made diet changes and eat more foods that help fight the bad cholesterol such as pomegranate juice and dates, almonds etc. Yes high vitamin C and D3 are great. I’m a good 10 years older than Norm and for the last 40 years have lived with health issues after dealing with CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) Biggest problem, food sensitivities, secondarily-hypoglycaemia and hypothyroid. My diet is gluten/dairy/alcohol free and has always included meat, root vegetables, but no fresh vegetables all those years. I take a multivitamin, extra D & C & acidophilus. Had both types of shingles, pneumonia, as well as 4 Covid shots
So far I have managed to stay fairly healthy through a life that included children and grandchildren, being self employed in design and trades. When I turned 65 I restarted my childhood activities of playing bagpipes and Scottish Country Dance. Having lifelong varied interests, some active, some creative have really helped to buoy my spirits when injuries or pain inevitably show up, so I feel very lucky.

Like you we had to pay for our first vaccine and now because we are over 70 we will have to pay again! And of course the older one gets the nastier shingles hits. Get in there and get it before they change their minds. We had hoped to get to Portugal this winter and of course run into you in a cafe or on the street but doesn’t seem it will happen. Very good advice. I'm in my early seventies and was shocked to learn about 5 years ago that I have osteoporosis. My husband and I are very active and walk over 20-25 miles a week. My husband's doctor recommended he be tested. I was even more shocked to find he has osteoporosis too. We now take one of the medications for this. Recently I have read that the test we both took does not give people the full picture of their bone health. There's a difference between bone density and bone quality. A new test is coming available to test for bone quality. I would like to find where I could receive that test. Going to a specialist lipid clinic sounds like a good thing and relates to the quest to have a more tailored approach to individual health care decisions. You're so right about protecting yourselves from shingles. Both my husband and I had it in our 50s and would urge anyone to do what they can to avoid this horribly painful illness. Since it can recur, we now are protected by the Shingrix too. We also take the D3 with calcium and magnesium and a time-released vitamin C. Best of health to you both! I enjoy your videos.

The shot (s) can be pricey here in the US. Regarding cholesterol your comments are also my experience. I can eat lots of shrimp, eggs and cheese and the levels are the same as my cholesterol is apparently internally created. I do take a minimal does statin! It looks like you're having a great Vacation and the weather is just beautiful, thank you for talking about the shingles vaccine, you have reminded me that I need to get it as soon as possible, my Mum who lives in the uk and is 84 years old got shingles over her left eye, forehead and the top of her head during the middle of covid, it was so bad she was in the hospital for 2 weeks and wasn't allowed any visitors, I couldn't get through to the hospital as no one would answer the phone and it was a terrible time for our family, she is still in pain 18 months later, scared her head and is now blind in that eye, as you know we have been so busy selling the house, moving provinces, buying a condo and sorting out our finances that it completely slipped my mind to have the vaccine so thanks again for talking about the importance of this. Enjoy the rest of your vacation and see you next week lol.

Steel cut oatmeal & carrots help reduce cholesterol. Also Lentils help clean the blood, and staying away from dairy products and sugar help as well. I had no idea sugar actually raises cholesterol too. Too much sugar raises your triglycerides which also play a role in cholesterol, also sugar is bad for the heart. These days apples have too much sugar, they are not as healthy as they used to be.

My cholesterol was very high. A whole food plant based diet really brought it down. It’s a new way of eating for sure and I sometimes “cheat” especially eating out. Just don’t go overboard. if you eat at home a lot it is easy. Just do some research to see if it is something you could do. Like you I don’t want to take statins.

Hi Tina and Norm...Lovely backdrops. Good for you getting a break from routine. I burst out laughing at Norm's remark: "Tina won't let me have one". Husband and I had the shingrix years ago, but I had no idea that we should consider repeating. So thank you for that information. I will check with our doctors. A friend had shingles years ago (why we were persuaded to get the vaccine) and she suffered for months. Something to be avoided for sure. Thanks again. Cheers!

I has Shingles about 15 years ago and it was just dreadful, the pain was excruciating. I had the Zostavax vaccine when I was fully recovered, (which was the go-to back then), but it is not good for life. I was way overdo for another Shingles vaccine then Covid hit. The minute it was safe to get it between Covid shots I got the Shinrix vaccine and am due for the second shot soon. It is not free in British Columbia, but like you, paying the $150.00 per shot here is worth every penny. I could not go through that again.
Glad you are enjoying your summer place, it looks lovely!

We got the covid, shingles, flu and pneumonia and felt a bit like pin cushions there for a while but we thought it best. We are still doing well health-wise but really miss traveling. If things don't get any worse w pox or pandemics we are planning a trip to Ottawa in Oct. Fingers crossed.

Hi N & T, I ve had shingles 3 times. I believe stress may be a factor as the first two times were after children were born & believe me nursing is sooo uncomfortable when you have shingles. The third time was last November 2021 after my left leg was amputated. Being isolated was not fun when I needed support of family & friends They were more painful than my incision on my thigh (aka leglet as I call it).
Get your shots!!! Oh vitamin D was added to my meds - quite helpful I believe. 🤗

Hi Tina and Norm - really appreciate your weekly input! On the shingles theme, I had the shingrix shot and when suffering from shingles last year, there was no doubt that the shot reduced the duration and severity of the nasty illness! i have just had my second bone marrow transplant (leukaemia). Original in 2018 and relapse in 2021. Pleased to say I have just been given the go ahead to go back home to Collingwood (have been staying in Toronto since April 2021 as needed to be close to PMH) and hope to pick up a normal life again!! I am 64. Thanks again for the valuable input, rreally appreciate your videos. Steve

I received the 1st shingle vaccine a few months ago at age 60. I was fatigued for 3 days post vaccine. I've heard of too many people suffering from shingles, so I got the vaccine as soon as my insurance would cover the cost. As much as I dread it, I'm scheduled for a colonoscopy in four week. I want to be sure that everything is OK before I put in for retirement next year.
