    I just replaced BOTH mine today and did NOT remove the left saddlebag. Just remove the four screws from inside the bag and the plastic battery box, pull the corner of the bag away from the frame and just put something in between the bag and frame so it stays out of your way. Also slide the rubber boot holder in place first, then slide the new solenoid in it, closet to the rear first. Do BOTH before you reconnect the three harness wires.

    Thx Bro! Your video helps me out with a starting issue on my 08 GW. I’m still troubleshooting to determine culprit. Will update.
    Appreciated one of your other videos on front fork seals on my other Honda VTX1800 2006. I completed that project last year. Thx again!

      My own follow-up UPDATE to my 08 GW starting problems - was the starter relays - completed about 1 month ago or so. Backstory - Bike wasn't starting - was playing around with battery and a charger to troubleshoot. At 1st I just replaced battery cause I bought this bike back in Feb 2018 and battery condition was questionable. That didn't solve problem. I replaced both starter relays as you suggested Cody. They most likely were the original relays - so as you state - they are replaceable item that will eventually go bad. GW has been starting fine - no issues - I will put my trickle charger on it every other day.
      One thing I found out as far as trickle chargers for these batteries - recommended that you go with MAX 1.5 Amp trickle charger on these batteries - anything above that could effect the life of your battery. These GoldWings draw on the battery when it's sitting. And yes in my process my 1st battery replacement needed replaced maybe cause I had too high an amperage trickle charge on it (3 AMP), or it was a bad battery that I got from AutoZone. I went with WalMart as the 2nd replacement - I have a WalMart in my VTX 1800 Honda and have had no issues - although I don't have any clock or radio on it that draws like the GW. I did the Parasitic Draw test numerous times throughout this whole process and didn't find any. Also, I would recommend taking that left side bag completely off to give yourself plenty of room to work in there - I got it done without taking it off- but sure was a pain trying to get enough room to work up in there. Thanks again Cody - Everybody Ride Safe!

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge Cody!! With this solenoid failure are you able to hear the starter continue to spin?

    • @TheMotorcycleMD
      @TheMotorcycleMD  5 лет назад +2

      Depends on how loud your radio and wind gusts are when starting the bike!! You can double check this if you after you start the bike you re-press the starter button to hear it free spin. (‘This does not damage anything)
      You would notice it even more with the starter not shutting off even with the key out!!

      Thanks Cody! I made note of this and placed in my shop manual.

    Have an 03 the start button wouldn't return all the way. Starter would stay running & headlight would be out when it happened. Contact cleaned the right handlebar switch & stopped the run on.

      Your right about that man. Pretty insane. We had one guy show up with a GL1500 with 287k (very well taken care of) traded it in on a GL1800, swapped over all his gear straight into it and took off to Cali the same day.

    Greetings, I want to replace both solenoids, are they the same or different?

  • @mikeporro3311
    @mikeporro3311 5 лет назад +1

    My Gl 1800s Problem is that sometimes when using reverse the starter motor just spins and doesn't crank the engine this only happened once starting the bike but more that once this has happened with the reverse gear with the starter spinning and a clicking sound is heard. Is it the drive unit on the starter? or the solenoid?

    • @TheMotorcycleMD
      @TheMotorcycleMD  5 лет назад

      Sometimes the starter gears doing line up when the button is applied I have heard this. Starter could be the issue. Clean your starter button and try a double tap on the starter button. Obviously wait for it to stop free spinning. I’ve never been able to pin point the exact issue on this.
      Replacing the starter solenoids is smart because it is a wearable item!

    Just picked up an 03 1800 and the reverse is not working. Would that be indication I need to change both of the starter and reverse relay? Thank you for your time.

    Can I just disconnect,or remove the reverse solonoid without issue?
    I never use the reverse anyway.

  • @troykline6587

    you stated that the reverse solenoid can be bad, would that make the bike not go into reverse at all. mine has a mind of its own. The light turns on then noting.

    So I assume honda have redesigned the fault out of the solenoid replacement ?

    • @TheMotorcycleMD
      @TheMotorcycleMD  5 лет назад +1

      The newer solenoids are the fix. Keep in mind this wing at 160,000 miles.

    Backed out my Gl 1800 put it in neutral turned my bike off locked the garage bike will not start. Replaced the Battery and Starter solenoid, voltage will not pass from one solenoid to the other. Pull the connecting cable from solenoid a to solenoid b battery voltage is present. Soon as I connect it to my new solenoid b no voltage. My starter solenoid on my 2003 Goldwing, is new and will not energize. Using a remoter starter from solenoid a battery voltage to starter solenoid starter barley turns with new battery. (Solenoid A reverse solenoid Solenoid B Starter )
    Solenoid a is new too it clicks but Solenoid B will not. Need help looks like my starter is fried but why are my solenoids not able to pass voltage.?

    Solenoids burn out, stop working, some in heavy engineering allocations also have over ride tabs for "testing purposes" off course. Shit happens things wear out be it wheel bearings, tyres, whatever. If you ride a motorcycle make sure YOU are fit to ride and the bike you have is fit. Nuf said. Learn from gents like Cody.
