    A trick I learned long ago when re-assembling plastic devices is to not just insert the screws and start tightening. If you do, you might accidentally cut new threads into the plastic and that's how you end up with stripped out holes After inserting the screws, slowly turn them backwards and as you do, you will hear and feel them 'click' into their original threads, then you can tighten them up and you are good to go.

    Hi, Paul! This is funny because I just performed the exact same switch repair on both my hazard and fog-light switch before I found this video, and you are exactly right on these 2 important points (in case anyone is wondering, Paul is right):
    1. Suggestion: physically remove that spring (the one that likes to go flying) with needle-nose pliers before disassembling the rest of the switch. This is to prevent that spring from being lost.
    2. The copper leaf-spring on mine indeed was "flat" and the grease inside the mechanism was turning to a glue-like substance (the bike is 16 years old). So the next step of my "operation" was using a tiny screw driver to scoop out the old glue-like grease, and once clean and the little "pin" moving freely, then I lifted that leaf spring to make it stronger again.
    3. The black switch indeed has to be re-assembled by snapping it in so that all 4 "dogs" snap into their places at the same time. You can also test the conductivity of the switch before re-assembling if you want to make sure it works (so you don't have to take it out again). It should provide a complete short between the left pair of wires, and another short on the right pair of wires.
    Well done! Great tip! I'll search here before I dig into my next fix! (Shich is the blinker switch -- gummy and doesn't pop back to center sometimes.)

    That Dow grease is the best I've found. I broke down and disassembled my remote switches on the handlebars of my Gl1800 to clean and grease them. Pretty tedious, small work with the headlight on my head, but they all work now. Great video.

  • @ramosel
    @ramosel 7 лет назад +3

    Paul, you didn't use enough dielectric grease...
    As an Electronics Engineer (ret) with enough letters behind my name to make alphabet soup, there is no reason not to use the dielectric grease unless there is a reaction with the non-metallic structure of the switch. Most dielectric grease is PDMS based and relatively inert compared to petroleum greases. The only time you have to be concerned is when you use dielectric in areas of high energy arcing as components of the PDMS can convert to Silicon Carbide (SiC) or as you probably know it, Carborundum... which can hasten contact failure. So don't use it on your starter solenoid contacts and you'll be fine.

    I read somewhere about a guy using a massager on a stuck switch. So I have a hand massager shaped like a computer mouse and held it to my stuck cruise control on/off switch and moved the switch back and forth many times with the massager. Got the switch free! That massager I think will now be part of my took kit.

    Yup. Been thar and got da T shirt. Emergency flasher, driving light, and reverse switchs have all stuck. Lost a spring and found it, lost another and did not find it, but a clicker pen provided a substitute. Lots of folks poo-poo about WD-40, but it cleans out the too heavy Honda grease. I considered dielectric, but it is pretty thick too. I remembered another silicone grease I had in my fishing tackle box, Garcia Reel Lube. I used that and no more sticking switches and its been many years, 11 or 12 years. I wonder if Garcia Reel Lube is still sold?

    Paul you were thinking out of the box (or is it experience). The tech tip that I got from this video is the suggestion of placing your work inside a plastic bag when removing parts that have little springs inside. Or those dam E clips that always seem to fly off in a parabolic arc never to be seen again. Good tip, I will remember it.

    Just got a 2005 wing last week. Foolish me I didn't operate all the switches but the dealer saw the cruise on/off was stuck on so hoping they will fix that. I saw this video you made on the hazard flasher switch so I think I'll try mine. Sure enough it stuck in the on position. Had to tear it all apart and reassemble; hazards now off. Too chicken to try it again.

    This is my job for today. I was replacing all my bulbs with LED and used the hazard switch to check that all the bulbs were working.....Bad idea! I remember someone saying to NEVER push the hazard switch! Now I know why. Thanks for the video! I haven't been to NFLD in years. My mother grew up in Gander Bay so I used to visit there every 2 years as a kid.

    • @sunsetoriginals7320

      OK so I took the switch apart 3 or 4 times. I cleaned all the grease off the innards and applied dielectric grease (maybe too much) and it wouldn't work properly still. Took it apart again, cleaned off all the grease again, adjusted the spring pressure a little more and it worked fine. Took apart again to add grease (just a little this time) and it seemed to work. I put it all back together and now it usually works but sometimes requires a little persuasion. How is yours working now? Has it failed again?

    so basically what you’re saying is, take it apart and clean it and put it back together.. got it. I thought only BMW overcharged for parts..
    that’s not the most ridiculous price I ever heard for a part. I had a Kawasaki KLR 650. I was in the process of upgrading a part with the nickname, Doohickey. It’s a spring for a chain tensioner on the counterbalancer ., I went to the dealer to buy a replacement gasket just in case,made of what looks like paper. this was around 2006, so pricing now is probably higher. But this gasket made of paper shaped like the state of Ohio outline about as big as your hand, The dealer wanted $58 for that gasket.. after I was done coughing after I heard that price, I told the dealer to keep the gasket, I will be very careful when I remove that little inspection cover not to tear the gasket.
    Every time I see an out rages price for a part, I always ask myself, could I make one of these. The answer is no to the switch for the Honda four-way flasher, but yes to the Doohickey inspection cover on a Kawasaki KLR 650
    my four-way flasher is stuck on my 2002 Gold Wing. I just bought the bike in October. I don’t know why I pushed the button, I do know that I will never push it again, ever.I’m glad it’s November right now, I have 4 months to fix it..

    Hello Paul, I hope you still reply to comments from this video. I think your video is good, however, there are some areas you are not clear on. At around 3:44 you said to substitute switches (fog for hazard) you have to take out one of these little dogs spring it under and put in the other cavity????? You lost me!! In the video you are not very clear about what "dogs" is, what cavity are you talking about? You never show a clear view of the inside of the switch. I've taken the switch (hazard ) apart multiple times, cleaned it and it still sticks.

    • @7863348
      @7863348  4 года назад

      There is a drain screw on the bottom of each carburetor. Loosen each one and see if an fuel comes out. If there’s no fuel you have a restriction or it’s possable your needle valves arethe wrong size. The other thing I’d have to check if it were in my shop is It sounds to me that the carburetors might not be clean enough and they are restricting the fuel. What you have is a a fuel problem. You just need to track it down. I would start by getting a factory service manual and that will be your best friend when you have issues. Good luck.

      Try resetting the abs light by removing the abs fuse for a minute.
      If that don’t work here are your options:
      Purchase service manual and use it to find the issue or
      Take it to your nearest Honda dealer for repair.

      It’s the switch. It needs to be cleaned and use dielectric grease to lib and it should work well then.

    • @7863348
      @7863348  2 года назад +1

      Well what’s difficult for some is not for others so it’s a loaded question. It is doable and It not that difficult . You’ll need to buy and heating element. They are less than $100. Remove the seat and it’s cover and put the element inside then wire it in with a switch and you now will have a comfy seat.

      Ciao, Alessandro. Vorrei consigliare prima la cosa più semplice e che sarebbe quello di mettere un olio di buona qualità nella bici. La mia bici aveva un problema di cambio quando era nuova e ho usato l'olio di Motul e ha risolto il problema. utilizzare anche un nuovo filtro dell'olio. Spero che questo possa essere d'aiuto. Tenere bene. Saluti. Paolowww.sportbiketrackgear.com/motul-300v-10w40-synthetic-ester-motorcycle-oil/

    Raising hand.......I have a question? Why shouldn't you be using that grease, seems just by the name of it it would be ok to use.

    • @7863348
      @7863348  7 лет назад +1

      It tends to harden up causing the switch to stuck as in this case.
