Thanks Scott, another great tip, going to order an extra fuse holder now, your always right on point, since 2010 when a Honda Dealer told me my 99 was too old to work on GoldwingDocs and a shop manual has been my savor! 2 99 Wings later and 150k miles plus I've never seen a shop again. Keep up the Great job!
Thank you for doing these information al videos. It’s great to have someone to rely on that gives credible information in a way anyone can understand. Even me.
Great Scott your regulator saved my GL1000 from running empty again! Got here to portugal in 2 weeks and installed it in 2 minutes !! It took me a while to figure out that this was the problem because the previous owner had no idea of the strange honda electrics, so also very happy with your other suggestions !
I bought a Gold Wing as a box of parts. Just got it together and put a hundred miles on it the other day. This is all good preventative stuff to know and I'll have to check mine out for it.
These videos remind me of my Dad back in 85 on and his GoldWing !!!! He would love these. He was like most hands on his bike. I fortunately picked up an 86 recently. Thanks for the heads up.
Thank you for your video. My 77 Wing has the exact problem, both fuel and temp gauges go out and come back simultaneously as they please, Now I know why and just bought one from you. My main voltage also fluctuates between 11-14v on a healthy battery & main fuse block updated. my dash warming lights all light up during high RPM on the hwy and nothing is wrong with the bike, should I replace the main 12v regulator as well? do you have a video addressing this problem? thanks a million!
I just upgraded from a 1200 interstate to a 1990 GL1500 SE. Awesome bike and just getting to know it. Thanks for your video's as I am getting a lot out of them. I didn't know about the master fuse failure and checked my bike for a spare. It was there. I live in British Columbia Canada in the north and not many places to get parts. Nice to know any issues that could arise. So thanks again for sharing this issue.
The stator plug problem must be a Honda thing because my CR 900 did the exact same thing several times before I got this info…. Great video, keep up the good work…
Thank you Scott. Great video. Have you ever done a video on replacing the neutral switch on a GL 1000? I'm currently needing to replace mine. Thanks again, Dan
Great video, thank you. On my 2009 GL1800 Main fuse B is marked 120 + 40, Honda part 38231-SFE-J01, it's not a cover, that whole black thing you see is the top of the fuse cartridge. it stays in with the two screws located underneath. If yours is marked 100 + 40 it should be 38231-SEP-A01 any Honda car dealer should be able to get it. I believe it also fits an Accord
Technical point: spinning permanent magnets in a fixed stator, like used on most motorcycles, is an alternator. The type used on later Goldwings (and some other Hondas) and most cars, is an 'excited field' alternator.
good video, my husband has a 2007 goldwing and the positive battery cable seems to have a short in it somewhere. do you have a video or ideas how to get the bike torn down enough to get to both ends of the positive cable? seems like the short is not at the battery but below somewhere.. thanks
Hello Scott, great video. You mentioned you would not fit a 30A buss fuse to a 500 or 1800. I have a 1500, what type of fuse would you recommend? Many thanks, Dave
I have a 1980 1100. About 7 yrs ago I learned about the little regularor behind the guages. Mine were working, but I could see into the crystal ball, so I bought one. Two years later, sure enough, the temp and fuel guages started going haywire!
On both my 90 GL1500 and my 94 ST1100 the low fuel warning light failed. This is a common problem. I fixed it by replacing the thermistor located inside the small canister attached to the fuel pump mounting bracket. Simply removed the pump from the tank, then 2 screws to detach the small canister, and cut open the can with a dremel. Unsolder the old thermistor and replace. Re solder the can and re install everything. A $2 fix.
Yes, it is a very common failure. Some of us have replaced it with a float switch and a flasher signal - so when the low fuel light starts flashing, you know you have 1 gallon remaining.
The buse fuse to replace the blade is brilliant. I will definitely be doing that. As to the yellow stator wires, do they have to be specific to which wire they go to, or can I just cut the connection and solder them all together as a group of 3?
Great information. Although I have an F6 Valkyrie 1998 (mint), it is a Gold Wing sibling and shares various electricals with the GW 1500... So if you can include the Valkyrie in your notes, it will be appreciated.
To check the overall battery condition I simply installed from ebay a simple electrical panel. that has 4 positions. One has a volt meter, another has a double USB charge port, next is a aux power plug often known as a cigar lighter outlet, and then there is a 3 position switch. So if there is a issue with the charge system you start seeing a slow drop in voltage. The other position allow you to use a GPS etc. So it is a good $15.00 investment.
Outstanding videos!!!! I dont even own a Goldwing{ yet} looking to sell my CB1100 and hopefully find a 1500 model Goldwing! I ilike the 90s style ones the best
I just had my fuel gauge go all the way to the left. With that said, could you do a video of where the pinched wire or relay is at. Thanks and great videos too
2001 1800 wing bought last yr, previous owner said alternator was replaced, while riding yesterday my gauges went off along with radio. left me on the road, had bat checked today and was bad, brought new bat home, started bike and checked volts with meter and watched volts drop off. pulled alternator going to see if it tests bad. funny it looks new. that was a pain to get the 3rd bolt off. what are the chances this alt failed this soon. ty great vid
I ride a GL 1200 and before that a GL 1100. Replaced stators on both. Soldered the wires on the 1100. Put a new stator connector on the 1200. I'll be watching for heat. Never had the 7v regulator fail. I guess I've been lucky. Put inline fuses on many bikes and carry a spare inline fuse in my 1200. The connector on top of the relay melts also. This contains the main fuse and all power to the bike. Have had a lot of starter relays fail and aftermarket relays don't last. I use a small tractor relay from Tractor Supply. Stators seem to get weak before they quit charging completely. My 1100 would charge on the highway but slow running especially with the fan on runs the battery down. Another problem with the old Wings is the fan switch burns out then the bike overheats. Cheap fix is a heavy duty toggle switch for the fan then watch the temperature constantly. Never overheats on the highway but stopped in traffic the temp starts going up quickly. Turn the fan on until you get up to speed. I added a relay and a manual switch to my 1200.
My GL1500 alternator failed on a road trip. Dealer was nearby, but the alternator was not, so I waited a couple of days for the repair. To give me fair warning, I installed a voltage meter to show if the alternator is charging.
Sorry , but you totaly missed the mark where it comes to 1500's loosing charge. my 93 will NOT charge the battery while riding unless i regularly goose the engine. the regulator drops out to less than 12 v at long low speed rides , and heavy city traffic. simply install a digital voltage meter, and watch your output. I documented this failure of the regulator to raise the voltage output from the alternator in several videos.
Hi Scott! I have my good old GL 1100 runs fine and works like a dream. I thought about the big drop in voltage when low rpm now I know it’s normal. But I was thinking, when radio is on, voltmeter barely reaches 12 volt is that normal? Thanks for great videos! Peter from Denmark. 😊
Hi Scott , thanks for the info on replacing the main fuse with the 30 amp buss fuse, the only thing I wonder about is that my main fuse on my 1500 SE has a 50 amp fuse, so will a 30 amp buss fuse be ok ? I love your videos thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Hi William, I should note: the blade fuse socket holder I show is only a 30 amp holder with 10 gauge wire, as that's what I had on hand to show. For this application you should use an 8 gauge fuse socket, as shown in the link in the description. That is capable of handling more than 70 amps.
Hi Scott, great info on the 1500 main fuse switch to Bus style conversion from the blade. My question is what amp of fuse should I use. They seem to come in multiples of ten and the main fuse ( Main Fuse B) is shown as 55A. Is it OK to use a 60A? Am thinking a 50 might be prone to blowing unnecessarily but don’t know enough about electronics to know if I need to be concerned about using a 60A and having it not blow and have something damaged. Thanks in Advance!
Just went for a ride on my 88 1500 was running fine till I hit a pot hole. Now won't idle. I got bike home in 4th gear at 55mph at full throttle wouldn't go no faster . Is it possible it jumped time. I had to over Rev to get it going.
Great info; however, good luck trying to search for a Main Fuse B for 2015 GL1800 online. Spent over an hour looking before I gave up. Maybe I will ask Honda dealership if they have them for sale.
excellent video, keep 'em coming. I have a '81 GL1100D which has had the stater wires spliced, I'll have to check for the regulator! Also have a '97 GL1500C Valkyrie.... I have seen the dog-leg main fuse on this baby too and what size fuse and holder?? Thanks.
i HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 85 1200CC. THE PLUG COVER WAS ALMOST MELTED. i WENT BACK TO THE DEALER i BOUGHT IT FROM (BRAND NEW) AND THEIR SERVICE PERSON AND HE SAID THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO. THIS DEALER HAD A GOOD REPUTATION ANE SUPPORTED OUR GWRERA CHAPTER. I HAs some words wit the service department, and brought it to another local dealer. he knew what the problem was right away and had it fixed in a little more than an hour. He SAID IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENTS SHOULD HAVE KNOWN ABOUT IT. AFTER GETTING IT FIXED I WENT BACK TO THE ORIGINAL DEALER AND SPOKE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER. H WAS PRETTY PISSED OFF THAT HIS SERVICE TECH DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT IT AND THAT HE GAVE ME SOME ATTITUDE ABOUT. THE COST OF THE REPAIR WAS ABOUT $50.. AND IT WAS MONEY WELL SPENT. I LOVED THAT BIKE AND IT NEVER GAVE ME ANY TROUBLE EXCEPT FOT THAT. I HAD TO SELL IT IN 1993 BECAUSE I WAS DIAGNOSEDE WITH MS, AND MY BALANCE WAS STARTING TO WAVER.
Thank you for your thorough information. However, I have a different problem. My brakelights remain on. I replaced my hi-beam headlight bulbs with LEDs. That's when I noticed my brake light staying on. After trying to diagnose the problem I took it to my mechanic. He called me and said he found a melted connector. (Didn't say which one.) Any thoughts? Could the LED lights be an issue?
I’ve had a 1100 and 1200 the same and I done away with the connector and wired straight and I’ve still had the wires get so hot they melt. And that’s with a new stator on my 1200 and good regular. My 1100 I have now does same but I don’t drive it on road I don’t have a title for it 😵💫😞
Thanks. I have 1800A. Headlights and Radio out. Might due to burned wires. I made the grave mistake of jumping my GW with a car battery and car Jump cables. What to do now.
I have a gl1200 1984 the brown wire from the fuse block above the gas tank up to the plug-in for the gauges shorted out the neutral light high beam light in that package runs off that brown wire had to cut it out and replace it and now everything works fine
I just bought on 87 goldwing 1300 with a sidecar now the battery died because of the cold weather and I don't have a tender I got it started and it let it run for a while and now when I shut it off turn it back on I have all the lights everything and it start button and will not do nothing it is in neutral and I have cables to the battery I don't know what to do
I love your videos they are very informative. I have a 99 1500 and the radio works but sound is very low with the volume turned all the way up. Do you have any solutions or guesses as to where to start to fix this issue??
You said that a 30 amp in-line fuse was to be used on older GLs. What size in-line fuse should I install on my '95 GW 1500 GL SE? Thanks, GoldwingDocs!
I usually use lm317s when I need to make a quick regulator for either voltage or current. A couple of resistors and the right configuration can make a regulator pretty quick for whatever you need. I used to build a lot of lasers and needed to make my own drivers.
Great video! Subscribed. After watching your video I checked my 1986 Aspencade that isn’t charging and found the stator wiring connector is corroded/burnt. Is it possible the stator is still ok? Thanks again
Hello, I already subscribed. 2 months ago I bought my first 1500 and I have a problem with the reverse gear. When you operate it with the starter button, the switch next to the master fuse clicks several times and the wheel only moves a little and without force. I replaced it but it's still the same. It would seem like an electrical problem, but the battery is new and 20 amp. Any ideas? thank you.
Scott on an unrelated subject, where did you get your side cover securement lanyards? I see your still using them and every since I saw your recommendation in another one of your video's, I've been unsuccessfully searching the net for them. Any idea where I can get some?
I love your show it's awesome dude you know a lot about goldwings I'm glad I watched your video I learned a lot but I have a problem with my Gold Wing the cooling fan as I'm riding won't shut off until I pull the bike over and shut the engine off and then let the key on and then it cools down and shuts off could you tell me what's wrong with my bike thank you very much
I have a 2001 GL1800, I have replaced 3 alternators within 1.5 weeks. The only thing that isn’t working is the speakers don’t play sound. Could that have anything to do with the alternator blowing?
I have 2008 1800. Always started good. Had a bad battery and just replaced now i just get a click when i hit the start switch. Like and older car when the solenoid dosent kick in. Bike worked fine and reverse but i havent drove for 2 years. Replaced the battery today and thats when this started. When i try reverse it engages the gear but switch does nothing. Can you shed light on my problem? Thanks Joe C
Scott, I hope you can answer this question. I put a new battery in my wing but it had a short and took out my alternator. I replaced the battery and the alternator which is a 95 amp. The original was only a 40 amp. I am planning a long trip this summer and am wondering if I am able to charge my cell phone and communication with the higher amp alternator or will that damage my appliances ?
Hi Scott. Apologies if my question has already been asked and answered but what you just described as the engine just stopping is exactly what happened on my Honda ST 1300 and I’m wondering if it’s because it’s the same battery charging design issue. I wound up buying a new battery and that seems to have resolved the issue although it has happened once or twice that the engine just stopped. I have since then purchased a Gold Wing and will be selling the ST and I’d feel better knowing that the issue was resolved 100%
It could be. If the battery is draining faster than it's being charged (or it's not charging at all), then it's going to get to a point where the bike doesn't have enough power to run. A battery discharged like that repeatedly will no longer hold a charge. If you keep going through batteries, you need to find the cause of the discharge rather than just replacing the batteries.
Thanks Scott. Had my 89' 1500 not having sparks anymore suddenly. all working except no sparks. Could it be the ignition relay or what to check? It happened after I disconnected/connected the battery just to attach a charging cable for the charger. Is there anything that can stuck and do not send sparks anymore to plugs? Day before was running perfect, going crazy 😅
Hey , on my 1500 gw , 1992 ....my connector to the starter celenoid (sp) melted . I purchased and original one from the dealer , $114 , they didn't carry the red connector clip . So i purchased one from Amazon. Any thing else i need to look out for . Had a friend tell me to change the starter too , i hope thats not the Case . Thank you for video ..
I have a 81 1100 one it died and the pos. Post was melted , replaced the battery voltage regulator ignition, starter solenoid and the kill switch next I will check the stator wires any suggestions would be appreciated thanks
A melted battery post is caused (obviously) by heat. Heat is caused by resistance: resistance between the battery terminal and the battery post. If there is corrosion, grease or dirt on the battery post or on the connector that gets screwed to the post - OR between the connector and the wire to which is connected, it can easily generate enough heat to melt the soft lead battery post. Make sure your connectors and battery posts are shiny and clean, and free of corrosion when screwing them in place. Make sure they are also very tight: a loose connection can also cause resistance.
It depends. The master fuse (main fuse B, shown in the video) in the GL1500 from the factory is 55 amps. However, very many GL1500's have aftermarket alternators installed, and those alternators can put out far more than 55 amps. Pretty mcuh all aftermarket alternators put out more that 55 amps, and Honda OEM alternators are extremely expensive - so as the factory alternators die, most get replaced with aftermarket alternators. The Compufire alternator in my bike is capable of producing 90 amps! In this case, I'd suggest going with the fuse size specified by the alternator manufacturer - or, failing that, one rated for the maximum output of the alternator. I should note: the blade fuse socket holder I show is only a 30 amp holder with 10 gauge wire, as that's what I had on hand to show. For this application you should use an 8 gauge fuse socket, as shown in the link in the description. That is capable of handling more than 70 amps.
I have a 2006 Gl 1800. No fog lights, tail lights, and no guages are working on the dash. Everything else is working, turn, headlights, brake lights all work. I checked all fuses and they are good. I'm stumped.
Hello. I need your help, please. Sequence of actions: 1: Started my 1988 GL 1500. 2: Put bike into reverse and moved back 10 feet. 3: Took it out of reverse, put it into 2cnd gear and turned the motor off. 4: Next day, took it out of 2cnd gear but could not find green neutral light to start. ....What to do to find neutral? Thanks for your help. Marc.
Very often this problem is a failing switch on the GL1500 reverse lever. Sometimes you can get it to work by wiggling and firmly moving the reverse handle into place, but it's not a permanent fix. See: goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32117
I have a 2005 GoldWing and it started having a short issue at the kill switch. Sometimes I would come back after turning the bike off and would have to tap on it to get it to start. Now it will not start at all plus I do not see the neutral light on at all. Is this a known problem or what should I do here? Is it a hard fix to take apart that control on the throttle grip? Thanks for you help! GLWINGIT !
Hello Scott. Thanks for the video and your channel. I just purchased a 97 GL1500SE and want to implement your 55amp fuse replacement. The link you posted shows a fuse holder and three different choices of fuses, 50, 60 and 70. Obviously the 60 is closest but it is not right on at 55. Is 60 okay to use?
Hi I have a 2002 1800 gl and I was riding a 90 mph and hit a bump on the highway and my tail lights and panels went out. I lost the gauges and all lights in the rear. Any Idea what could be the problem. Most likely will be a missed connection but the worst may be a relay. You still have relays for sale???
@Goldwingdocs Hey Scott, I have a 2002 GL 1800 with 53,000+ miles. I just noticed on the past couple of rides that when I use the key to start the bike, the screen does not display, and I cannot use the starter. If I turn it off/on one or two times, it will eventually initiate the display and I can start the bike. But this resets my trip odometers and reinstates the Welcome screen. I’m thinking this might be an issue with the starter switch, but since I’m not a mechanic, I’m not sure where to start looking. Would sure appreciate some input. Thanks!
If your oil pressure and neutral light are working, but your fuel and temp gauge are not, then it's the 7 volt regulator that is the problem. All of those run off the same circuit.
Great info for my 87. My speedo hasn't worked since I changed the front tire. I know, I screwed something up! How do I fix it since I cannot buy a new speed sensor? Using my phone in GPS/maps gives me speed, but not mileage. Thank You Van Hoka Hey
Thank you for covering the older 4 cylinder models, not only here, but especially on the forum. Ghostt
So where is the c d I box located
Thanks Scott, another great tip, going to order an extra fuse holder now, your always right on point, since 2010 when a Honda Dealer told me my 99 was too old to work on GoldwingDocs and a shop manual has been my savor! 2 99 Wings later and 150k miles plus I've never seen a shop again. Just wanted to say this is a great channel. I really appreciate it and all the useful information. Keep up the great work my friend!!
Very informative. I was wondering if you have covered what would causes the LCD screen, air pump and the cruise control to stop working.

On both my 90 GL1500 and my 94 ST1100 the low fuel warning light failed. This is a common problem.

Great informative video , Just purchasing my first GW .Can’t wait to ride
Thank you Scott I was looking for water pump I found it
Already did the wiring update at the stater thanks for the video
As a new Wing owner, I really appreciate your content to learn from. I'm having radio issues atm. I need help there please
Brother, check your fuses, new fuses solved my problem, and I carry extras in my trunk, take care!

Knowing Honda, I'm surprised there's not a spare fusible link (main fuse) in the black cover that covers the link.

I did the generator to alternator conversion on my ST 1100.
Thank you. Great video.
Thank you Scott ur good man making those units .very very cool well done
I even did the stator plug mod on my 2006 Suzuki C50. Same issue I had on the Wing.
Hello Scott.
How long(miles) will the alternator live ? I have a 1988 goldwing gl1500 and has gone 167.000km
Great Videos! Really Useful, I have a gl1500 SE same paint scheme as yours.
Had that issue noticed plug discoloration, got rid of connectors.
Do you know what size fuse a 2004 GL1800 uses?
Love the fuse improvement trick.
Same question here
Hi Scott , thanks for the info on replacing the main fuse with the 30 amp buss fuse, the only thing I wonder about is that my main fuse on my 1500 SE has a 50 amp fuse, so will a 30 amp buss fuse be ok ? I love your videos thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Same question here. ☝🏻
Hi William,
I should note: the blade fuse socket holder I show is only a 30 amp holder with 10 gauge wire, as that's what I had on hand to show. For this application you should use an 8 gauge fuse socket, as shown in the link in the description. That is capable of handling more than 70 amps.
This is rare on the 1800.
excellent video, keep 'em coming. I have a '81 GL1100D which has had the stater wires spliced, I'll have to check for the regulator! Also have a '97 GL1500C Valkyrie.... I have seen the dog-leg main fuse on this baby too and what size fuse and holder?? Thanks.
The GL1500 uses a 30 amp main fuse.
@@GoldwingDocs Oh, thought you said a 30 amp buss fuss was not enough. We all missed that part.
i HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 85 1200CC.
I found all of this in the schematic and repair manual and traced it back and fixed it
I have a problem getting to my starter. Do you have a step-by-step? Video on how to do that from beginning to end.
Do you have the service manual for your bike?
I just bought on 87 goldwing 1300 with a sidecar now the battery died because of the cold weather and I don't have a tender I got it started and it let it run for a while and now when I shut it off turn it back on I have all the lights everything and it start button and will not do nothing it is in neutral and I have cables to the battery I don't know what to do
Wow I just found this place 😍 my brake lights are out!!!!
Thanks for the great info. What size BUS main fuse/holder replacement do you recommend for a 2004 GL1800? Thanks again. 👍
Anything???
Hey make a tutorial on how to delete the Steering angle sensor and Bank sensor for GL1200 1984.
I love the details. Good work.
Fingers crossed. You won't know until you test it. Lots of details on how to do this on the GoldwingDocs site.
What size bus fuse would you suggest for an 1800? Im looking to replace the fuse as youve stated in the vid. Thanks!
Come back for tomorrow's video! ;)
Yr the goldwing king bro rock on with yr bad self !
@@GoldwingDocs Thanks Scott…much appreciated
Had a friend tell me to change the starter too , i hope thats not the
Case .
Great video for the main fuse on a 1500 Goldwing what should the amps be for the fuse if 30 amp is insufficient should it be 40 to 50 amp fuse?

Sequence of actions:
1: Started my 1988 GL 1500.
Thanks for your prompt response.
I just bought a 1999 goldwing 1500 I was wondering if you could tell me why it is leaking fuel out of the overflow hose while idling??
@Goldwingdocs Hey Scott, I have a 2002 GL 1800 with 53,000+ miles. I just noticed on the past couple of rides that when I use the key to start the bike, the screen does not display, and I cannot use the starter. If I turn it off/on one or two times, it will eventually initiate the display and I can start the bike. But this resets my trip odometers and reinstates the Welcome screen. I’m thinking this might be an issue with the starter switch, but since I’m not a mechanic, I’m not sure where to start looking. Would sure appreciate some input. Thanks!
What size buzz fuse for the GL1800 thanks Doug
Both my guages are at zero, I assumed that it was a fuse but I may need that regulator.
If your oil pressure and neutral light are working, but your fuel and temp gauge are not, then it's the 7 volt regulator that is the problem. All of those run off the same circuit.
Sounds like I need to order one from you
Great info for my 87. My speedo hasn't worked since I changed the front tire. I know, I screwed something up! How do I fix it since I cannot buy a new speed sensor? Using my phone in GPS/maps gives me speed, but not mileage.
