Thank you. My brother and i are empty nesters and needed a hobby to give us something to do and a reason to hang out. He got a 94 goldwing and within a week i got a 92. I dont even have a permit yet. I just found your channel and know ou are going to be the best resource for us. This channel has me even more excited about my bike.
First time viewer. Very helpful information, thoroughly delivered. A small tip for those that have yet to install straps (as you have) to avoid losing the side covers. When 1up, raise the passenger foot boards. If a cover does come loose it makes it harder for it to escape. Not an issue when 2up. I look forward to visiting Goldwing Docs.
Hi Scott, I want to thank you for this video. I currently am dealing with the relay/ silonoid that deals with the starter. I started and moved the bike out from the garage , when I turned off the key the engine stopped but the starter did not, I could not get the starter to stop by turning on /off the key & kill switch so I kicked the bike in gear , that finally did it after lunching forward another 10 or so feet. I went to my goldwing docs searching & sent an email so I've purchased both silonoids & decided to have the starter over hauled/ rewired as I no longer trust it for continued use. Thx for the info both by emails & videos . I also am going to order all new replacement relays as I had my 1500 for 13 years now with no issues so far but after watching this video I think it's time to replace them. Also, one last thing, the " straps " that you have on your bike that keeps the side covers from being lost , where can I find those ? Or what do I use to make my own ? Thx for the goldwing doc videos, I go back to them often. Dennis S. Harrisonville, Mo.
Great video Scott. Totally appreciate the way you teach! I just acquired a 2007 Goldwing trike and will check out more of your videos as I learn this thing. You just won a new subscriber here!
Hi Scott, you are right about carrying extra relays, two years ago I was stuck on a junction road somewhere in Wyoming so dont forget the extra relays and fuses, by the way I watched your how to comments on spraying contact cleaner on the buttons for the cruise control and the cruise on switch and it didnt work for me , any other suggestions. Thank you for the videos River city wings
Hi Scott - Enjoy your website and the RUclips channel! You've probably helped out more people than half the mechanics in my state over the years. I just ordered a couple relays, one of which I hope to use as a replacement for the fuel pump on my old GL1200. I know it's not OEM, but those are running close to $100 now - if you can even get one. (I think Randakk's still has them.) For the price difference I think I can do a bit of creative engineering and relocate the thing so it's not such a pain to get to. Thanks!!
I have 2000 Gold Wing 1500 SE. My kick stand light, trunk running lights, temperature and gas guage needles just quit working. I have checked my fuses they are all OK. Do I needle to check my relays ? Trunk brake lights still work.
Thank you for another awesome video! I have a 2004 GL1800 and would like to know how to test the tail light relay? I blow a 15amp mini fuse everytime I turn on the ignition. I don't have tail lights and the gauges don't work as well. Thanks again, appreciate it. 👍
Thank You for so much info.I have a 1990 wing with a fuel problem, I thought the pump was bad ,pulled fuel line from pump and no fuel flow, tank is full, HELP
Good day, Scott On the 2 (4) seat bolts I put a nut on them and ground a small point down below the minor diameter on my bench grinder, that worked out very well. Yes, take the nut off first to chase the threads. You are one hell of a teacher, thank you so much! Johnny Boy

Dear Toby, Hope you're feline good. Just to let you know that I hit subscribe and ordered a couple of relays for my GL1500SE Trike. I'm learning quite a lot before my Goldwing has actually got to me. It's being transported from the bottom of the country, hopefully just in time for me to acclimatise, and then head off touring... to the bottom of the country and back again. I'm sure that it will be purring like a kitten all the way.
In relation to the current breakdown (motorcycle no longer starts with blackout) The 20A relays, I reversed some to see, it doesn't change anything, so I concluded that the failure didn't come from there.
In my 1988 Goldwing 1500, i saw 2 solenoids: one to the left of the battery, and other one to the right of the battery. I think that solenoid is to the right, and relay is to the left. Please explain to me. Dr.Martins
There are two large-current relays on the right side. One is near the battery, and one is lower down. Those are the starter relays. Check out this post: goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=66354
Don't know if you'll answer but my curb lights, side stand lights, oil light, fuel, side lights won't come on after I have serviced my 1500se,would or could it be relay switch as I've checked all fuses thanks Andy Hesketh,uk
My 2012 GL1800 won't start after battery was hooked up backwards by mistake but only for less than 5seconds, turns over but won't start and lost all my lights. Checked the fuses any idea for what to check.Mileage is 22,500
What was the push to talk button for? I am going to be purchasing j&m wired headsets will I need one of them or will my passenger be able to talk to me at will? Thank you very much for your videos they sure are helpful
hi there i have a 2002 1800 abs and lost speedometer,tachometer- what relay do i replace? I check fuses and think the relay g8ms-h34 under front left side compartment might be the culprit?
Just bought a 90 GL1500SE, learning as I go. It needs some work. I'll be checking out the relays tomorrow, already joined your site. Think I'll take your advice and order some relays from you.
I have 2001 GL1800, and the alternator has been blowing 3 times in the last 1.5 week. Do you know what’s going on? The only thing is my speakers done have any sounds, does that have anything to do with it ?
1994 GW ran battery dead, tried to jump start off charger now cruise, turn signal auto off doesn't work dash digital display and air pump not working did eventually start checked fuses all seem to be good, 12.2v not running 14.2 running, would you say relays? And if so which ones? Thanks
Thanks for the video! My 2012 gl1800 starter is not working, but it does click on the left side where the relay is. I can jump start it by popping the clutch in first gear, but not jumper cables and the battery is charged. Is it most likely the relay?
Thank you for the video. Just so I understand, does this help if you have a Goldwing that cranks but won’t turn over? I’m trying to go from easiest to hardest as I diagnose this new to me Goldwing. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
Just ordered a few. Just in case. I did have a starter relay just burn out on me on my 2000 Honda Goldwing. GL1500 Aspencade. It was showing signs off issues when I push on the starter button and nothing would happen then after a few attempts it started. Next to the battery is a round looking relay with a fuse box attached to it. two large nuts on top connect positive red wires. The fuse box has a burn mark on it. I have lost all power to lights, instrument panel, radio, cb and everything under the sun. I put a screw driver across the two terminals and the bike kicks over but wont start. I found the relay on amazon I ordered. Not sure if you have a video on this issue but I hear its common with older bikes. I called several shops in south west michigan in attempts to have them look at my bike and no one will touch a bike older than 15 years old. Love this bike but starting to regret buying a bike no one is willing to work on and no replacement parts are available after market for it.
Hi Scott, I hope you can help me. I have a 99 Valkyrie and it won’t start and I had my starter relay tested and it’s good but my headlight doesn’t come on when I turn the key on and someone told me it might be the starter button ? And my fuses are good. Thanks
Hi - I have a 2009 GOLD WING GL1800 Audio Comfort Navi XM, that has been sitting (garaged) for a few years. I just installed a brand new battery. I went to start it. There is plenty of juice, it turns over great, it just does not start. Any suggestions?
Thank you many times over. I own a 2010 GL1800 trike which I bought used years ago. Over the years due to high labor cost I have undertaken projects that I though I'd never attempt in reference to GOldwing repair. Will these relays connect to the GL1800 relay footprint? If so I would like to order some of them from you . Please let me know how to order if this application will connect to the GL1800 .
I have a 2003 GL 1800 that ran fine all summer, fall and early winter. Just before Christmas I tried to take it out since the weather was nice, which was only a couple of weeks after the last ride, and NOTHING. I am new to this and I know the battery was replaced when I bought it in June. When I turn the key on, it lights up, radio comes on, but still nothing. I will point out that when I hit the starter, the headlight dims. I haven't checked the relays and/or fuses, but that is my next step in my opinion. Have you seen this situation before? If so, what was the solution?
Our motorcycles don't have solenoids, they have starter relays - but you'd have to specify which bike you're talking about. Perhaps post a picture on the GoldwingDocs forum for us: goldwingdocs.com/forum
There are solid state relays with no moving parts . I have SSR’s that are from the 1970’s and they still work. SSRs are great for controlling high current loads ; back in the 1980’s in electronics school , I made a circuit that flashes a 120 volt light bulb at 15 hertz which consisted of a 555 timer set to a stable mode with a 50% duty cycle connected to the front end of the solid state relay ; they light bulb switched on and off with no issue . I have SSRs that can handle 10 amp loads , 120, 240 volt , 12, 24 volt … they are available all over the net .
My gl1100 1983 interstate has a wierd issue. The turn signals won’t work until I ride for a bit and or hit a bit of rough road, then I have signals. Any ideas folks???
What is the name of that screwdriver that you used that you bent it to 90 degrees? Also where would I find one? Could you send a link also to the sell page for the relays that you sell on Goldwingdocs?
That bendable ratchet screwdriver came from NAPA...it was one of my favorite tools, but unfortunately it broke a couple of years ago, and I have been completely unable to find a replacement. Here's the relay link: goldwingdocs.com/Store/Goldwing-GL1500-Relay-G8MS-H30.asp
The cruise control on my GL1500 does not turn on when I push the button and it does not function when on the road. This just quit. Could a relay be the problem? all fuses are good. Thecruise light comes on when I turn the key on and it runs a self check.
Yes this is Kenneth Maddox I've got a problem with my Goldwing the light will come on when it's in revert for reverse but it does not come on when it's in neutral what is causing the problem I put a new reverse neutral switch on it and it still ain't working
Have GL1200. Is there a way to use a relay to activate fuel pump using just ignition switch, instead of the start button? Hoping that would help starting after long periods the bike is idle.
Many people do buy a full set of 7 relays and change them all out: they are mechanical devices, subject to a lot of vibration, and they do wear out. Most people have one fail, then they will buy 3 or 4: one to replace the failed one, and a few to have or carry as backups.
Great video Scott! When you were explaining the relays, you mentioned that there is "another bigger relay" that is in the starting system. I have bought a couple of relays from you, but I believe they are the smaller ones. What is the description of the "bigger" relay and should I have one of them too?
The two relays that run the starter are on the other side of the bike, and are known as starter relay A and starter relay B. They are different from one another, and while you could potentially carry spares, that's going to take up a bit of space, as they are much larger. You can see pictures and locations of them here: goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6637#p29355
I have a 2006 Goldwing Trike GL1800. I had backing problem, where it would only back up about 6 in at a time. Then it stopped backing up. then when i go to start it, it just clicks once. Dose that sound like a relay to you? If where would it be on a trike? My battery is where your fuse box is.
I have a 02 goldwing. The turn signals stoped working but the hazards are still working. I got another controller but that didn’t fix the problem and not the bike won’t start. Any suggestions would help thanks.
What brand running lights are you using what size and how bright are they im looking for a good pair that will really light up the road when im traveling down the country roads i want to see that deer long before it to late
Have a problem with my 2004 Goldwing I thought it was a bad battery throwers fuses got a new battery put it in and it still won't start I hear clicking but it won't turn over what is my problem
job well done as Scott always does, have translated into Hebrew the explanation part .for the mechanics in our workshop , for learning purpose , its the clearest way of explaining the reason for relay"s i have yet seen THANKS SCOTT Steve Taylor if need be, you can have them sent to my US address and i will send them on to you !!
All but one. There are eight relays. One is a NC relay, it stands out because it is blue (all the others are black). So you would need to order 7 relays to replace them all. (the blue NC relay rarely fails, because, well, it's a NC relay). :)
I have 1999 1500 Goldwing ,it doesn't seem to be getting an gas so it can start ,,is the fuel pump electronic ? It turns over good ,,has half a tank of fresh gas ,,,anyone else ever have this problem
Lost all power to bike. Replaced main fuse when buying fuse he said takes two well where do they both go i found one by battery n replaced but still no power im first time bike owner n lost any one with a clue id appreciate the help
Where can I buy the relays you mention please ? I am in Tasmania Australia and have a 1800 cc 2005 reverse trike need urgently to see why my bike won’t start I have had battery double checked
Nice finding this I haven't read about this happening on GW Doc yet, but a member for sure as i just bought a 97 the same color as yours, Most I looked at were black or dark green and both disappear from your site to easy, so I guess I need to order a few to get ready for one going , guess I need to check the manual to see what runs what
No, the blue relay is a different type of relay. All the black relays are "normally open" relays. The blue one is a "normally closed", so they aren't interchangeable. The blue one RARELY fails, as it's not switching the loads that the others are.
Where is the started relay for a 94 honda goldwing 1500? On my relay cover, there is nothing that says starter or ign. I googled it and it does not show which one it is. Thanks.
The starter relays (there are two - starter relay A and starter relay B) are not in that relay case, they are on the other side of the bike, near the battery. Here's a topic discussing them, with pictures showing their location: goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=181283#p181283
I have a 05 Goldwing. Sometimes when i give the bike gas the stereo cuts out for just a second. I'm stumped by what could be causing it. The stereo continues to play but and this stumble doesn't do it all the time which makes it even harder to trouble shoot. Do you have any ideals where to start searching for the problem?
Question I have a 2008 G/wing my alternador has the regulator built in but what's strange that it also has the original external rectifier o don't get it why.
In a lot of cases, yes. There are differences (valves, carburetors, U-joint), apart from the obvious differences, but there are a LOT of parts and systems in common.
Just realised i cannot order as unfortunately i live in the uk. My country sucks, i’m embarrassed to be British. However i love this Goldwing Docs channel and will always remain subscribed. Regards, Steve. (uk)
iv just bought my first time Honda Godwing 12. well I have it less then two weeks, and the indicator lights are all stuck on guys, and I cannot turn them off to use indivdally.
Hi Scott, I have a 1984 Goldwing and sometimes while I'm out riding, like for a half an hour or longer, and sometimes (not all the time) when I shut the bike off it does not want to start again. I turn the key on and there is nothing, no headlights no dashlights nothing. And if I leave the key on, anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, it will come back to life and fire back up. But only if they leave the key on. Do you think it is one of the relays getting overheated? And if it is how do I tell which one? Thanks
Are all of the relays the same? If I buy one or two of your relays will that cover all of those relays under that cover? Are there others that are important to have on board that are not within that cover?.
They are all the same except for one, which you can identify because it's blue. The blue one is a normally closed relay, unlike the others, and rarely fails. All of the other relays are interchangeable.
I been having trouble with my goldwing 1985 with 20,000 miles on the dot. My bike has been stuck at my job for 9 days now and hasn't started I drove it to work with no problem and went to go home and never started I so stuck on what to do
Help ! My cousin is out of town and broken down. His 1999 GW 1500 keeps cutting off after riding a little ways. After it sits it will start again with no problems till he has gone down the road a little ways again . Any suggestions ?
Check the fuel cap and see if it is holding a vacuum. If it starts to stumble, and opening the fuel cap fixes it, leave it loose until it can get cleaned/fixed.
I’ve had a few GL1500s and have never had a regular relay go out on any of them. A couple of my bikes had over 300,000 miles on them. Of course I have had the starter relay go out a few times which is why I always carry spares and no I do not buy them from Honda. I buy them off of Amazon really cheap!
You're one of the lucky ones then! I've had two relays my GL1500 fail in the last 5 years. And the fact that we've sold literally thousands of these relays (and we continue to sell hundreds every month) says that they can, and do fail fairly often.
I am curious, if you add a couple of led lights, phone chargers, trailer hook up, do you need to use a relay or can you hook up directly to the battery. i saw a video where a guy added fuse box on his bike and the hook up he bought came already connected to a relay. tx again. Love all your vids.
@@GoldwingDocs trying to determine if a 30/40 amp relay can power several instruments such as phone charger, trailer hook up with led lights. Sorry to bother you with those questions but relays are new to me and I am still trying to figure them out. Tx
Help! Reverse, gas gauge, temp gauge not working. Tried replacing a fuse #8 I believe. Blew the fuse several times. It was the right size one. Could this be a relay problem if so which one and where do I get some. Thanks for any help.
Are they labeled with numbers? My taillights work fine but along with the gauges and "OD" light the "Reverse" light and function is out.? All relay 3 related? As I look at the relay how can you tell if one is "blown" or "caput" or "dead" or no longer operative?
Bought Scott’s relay, replaced relay #3 (top row, far right as looking at it from left side of bike), followed his video instructions - fixed everything that wasn’t working. So happy!
Dont have a goldwing but im glad people like you are out here helping other bike owners

Excellent. I was going to have to wait 6 weeks for a garage appointment and have the bike towed. You just solved my problem
What was your problem that you were going to a mechanic for? Was it cranking but not turning over?
Hey Scott I just want you to know, I received the 2 relays I ordered from you! Just wanted to say thanks, you saved me quite a bit of money. 👍
Fantastic! Glad to help.
Seat back? I don't. Wish I did! Thanks for the video. Having a tough time getting a stoplight relay out and didn't want to miss anything!
Just bought 3 from GWDs...thank you. If youre ever in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin give us a shout...you'd be a blast to ride with and learn from.

@@GoldwingDocs thank you I'll check those relays and likely change out all of them.

Do you have a video were you show how to test a relay?
Hi Hey duck you still have the relay available ship to Canada can you
Are those those two cylinder like on both sides of the batteries Solenoids. Please help
I don't really know what to do I want to clean all the wires everything the neutral light will not come on no matter what I do
I just subscibed to this channel and let me say these are the very best Goldwing videos I've found, love the foram as-well!! keep up the good work.
Thank you Rembert!!
Have GL1200. Is there a way to use a relay to activate fuel pump using just ignition switch, instead of the start button? Hoping that would help starting after long periods the bike is idle.
Enjoy the video Scott I've got a 97 1500 should a person change one of them like a maintenance
Many people do buy a full set of 7 relays and change them all out: they are mechanical devices, subject to a lot of vibration, and they do wear out. Most people have one fail, then they will buy 3 or 4: one to replace the failed one, and a few to have or carry as backups.
@@GoldwingDocs Thank you I will order some first thing Monday morning
Are all the relays the Same?
All except for one (you'll know which one is different - it's blue, instead of black).
Do you also sell the blue relay I believe its a 10amp I just bought 5 of the 40amps off your website thanks
About those side cover retention straps? I need some
I have a 2006 Goldwing Trike GL1800. I had backing problem, where it would only back up about 6 in at a time. Then it stopped backing up. then when i go to start it, it just clicks once. Dose that sound like a relay to you? If where would it be on a trike? My battery is where your fuse box is.
Can you show replacing relay on 1997 GL1500 Motor Trike conversion? Has no saddle bags to loosen.
I have a 02 goldwing. The turn signals stoped working but the hazards are still working. I got another controller but that didn’t fix the problem and not the bike won’t start. Any suggestions would help thanks.

job well done as Scott always does, have translated into Hebrew the explanation part .for the mechanics in our workshop , for learning purpose , its the clearest way of explaining the reason for relay"s i have yet seen THANKS SCOTT

All relays are the same? I would like to replace all of them in my 1990 GW. Please let me know so I can order them from GWDocs.
All but one. There are eight relays. One is a NC relay, it stands out because it is blue (all the others are black). So you would need to order 7 relays to replace them all. (the blue NC relay rarely fails, because, well, it's a NC relay). :)
@@GoldwingDocs Thank you I'll place my order for 7 then.
@@GoldwingDocs Scott, this would have been really important to include in your video, perhaps you can edit it. 🙂
@@GoldwingDocsSir, does the 2008 GL1800 use these relays? Thx in advance!

Do you have relay for fuel pump on GL1800 ?
Nice finding this I haven't read about this happening on GW Doc yet, but a member for sure as i just bought a 97 the same color as yours, Most I looked at were black or dark green and both disappear from your site to easy, so I guess I need to order a few to get ready for one going , guess I need to check the manual to see what runs what
Do you make the relays for a 2006 GL 1800?
Hi Scott recently received some relays 8 no from you. The existing blue 10 watt can I fit one of yours and if so is the higher wattage an issue. Edcot
@@GoldwingDocs So, they are not the same as the other relays? That looks tiny.
@@GoldwingDocs Or are they 2 solenoids? That is what they look like. Nothing to what is on the other side. Thanks.
@@JohnSmith-uy7sv No, they are completely different relays. They are high-current solenoid-type relays with stud and nut terminals on top.

2008 Goldwings never had an external rectifier - so you must be looking at some other component?
Anything relating to the GL1500, does that include the Valkyries also??
In a lot of cases, yes. There are differences (valves, carburetors, U-joint), apart from the obvious differences, but there are a LOT of parts and systems in common.
I want to know More about the exhaust aaaaaaa
This is great advice and information thankyou. Can you give me a link to buy relays from you please ?

If your bike is cranking, just not turning over, would that still be a reason to get a new relay?
Typically if it's cranking but not starting, the problem is a weak battery.
Thanks
Did you ever find the answer on this same problem

Where is the starter selinoid ?

Have a look at this article which talks about this exact thing: goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=10890

Nice! Would the “OD” light, gas gauge and temp gauge happen to be on a relay? They all quite simultaneously.
Indeed they are, they all share fuse 8 and relay 3, along with the taillights.
@@GoldwingDocs Thank you for such a rapid and helpful reply!

So happy!
