    Very cool videos! I'm stoked to get my own GL1800 at some point.
    A note: dielectric grease is excellent at insulating - it's perfect for keeping water and junk out of electrical junctions. It's great at stopping the flow of electrons - it's an insulator. Using it on the spark plug boots/ribs (i.e. NOT on the terminal, where electricity needs to flow to the electrode) will help them separate in the future - this is recommended by many makers and technicians. However...
    Unfortunately, the threads of the spark plug are in the direct current path for ground on the plugs - impeding electrical flow can cause problems from poor performance to engine damage. Anti-sieze would be better. HOWEVER, any lubricant can lead to over-torquing, which can lead to stripping threads on the soft aluminum blocks.
    Use on the threads at your peril - NGK recommends against lube on the threads, for one.

    Just one concern here. NGK presently recommends installing their plugs dry as any applied lubricant can allow the plug to be over torqued by as much as 20%. Not a good thing with aluminum heads. NGK goes on to day the plugs are coated to prevent seizing. Other than this, I generally find your videos to be quite helpful!

      Being a retired GM and Honda tech and living it a very corrosive environment on a rock out in the middle of the North Atlantic (Newfoundland) this is the way we do it. If you don’t do it this way here those plugs will not come out if installed dry. Do what ever your comfortable with. This way has worked for all our vehicle and motorcycle customers for the last 30 years. Thanks for watching.

    Just a short comment about your road demon bell. I think that may be a carryover from the Harley days - where they are necessary (to protect you from parts that fall off the Harleys and bounce up from the road to bite you) and unnoticed (anyone who rides a Harley would never notice that little bell ringing - even after the bike was shutdown).. However with the Goldwing the bouncing parts are unheard of, and that constant little ringing bell was driving me nuts.
    I had to remove mine..
    Thanx for the video and specs.

    What's about NGK Iridium tipped plugs? Do they have a better lifetime than original one, that must be changed every 16 K miles? A good idea to use a rubber hose to begin the screwing of plugs and avoid crosstreading them; I do it since a have motorcycles.

    • @-C.T.-
      @-C.T.- 5 лет назад

      I'd also like to know. I have purchased Iridium's before for other bikes and they are definitely more expensive. Are they worth the cost for any bike and, in this case, especially the Wing?

  • @lornethornhill8452

    I actually have a question about spark plugs. I was driving a 2011 ford 350 cube van 250k (ish) original plugs could one of the plugs blow out of the engine just because of too high acceleration ( Heavy Foot) or was it bound to happen anyways. And Also could having only 4 or 6 of 10 spark plugs replaced have anything to do with a plug popping

    • @7863348
      @7863348  Год назад

      I’ve seen spark plugs rust out to the point where the outer casing corroded so bad it blowed out the the plugs ceramic and all was left in the head was the threaded portion and I used a little heat and a bolt extraction tool to remove it. I’ve also seen plugs blowed out that was caused by defected threads in the head and I repaired it via helicoil insert. One time I seen one blow out simply because the installer didn’t install them tight enough.

    Hi Paul & Kathy! Have you ever taken the valve covers off?
    A recent purchase of a 2004 GL1800A (my second GL1800A, ), I swear the previous owner must have lived under the sea (don't know him, purchased at a dealer who got the bike in an auction) . Every nut & bolt is either rusted or crusty! Also most all exposed aluminum filthy & pitted (previous owner obviously never cleaned the bike), I put a new rear wheel and aluminum polish w polishing cone of front wheel. My next step is to replace the valve covers - have you had these off before? I see some on eBay from China but I will probably bite the bullet and get a set from Honda.

    • @7863348
      @7863348  7 лет назад

      I've had many off and never seen that. I suspect you might have yourself a flood bike. One that's been under water for awhile then all the fluids were changed but the corrosion remained. I live in a very moisture filled area and have never seen what you have described. You might want to check the rear def oil and see if there's any signs of that crap in there. The fluid should be clear and not milky looking.

    • @DavidSmith-vp3dn
      @DavidSmith-vp3dn 7 лет назад

      Paul & Kathy Short Texas won't let a dealership sell a flood title, unless the owner never tried to make an insurance claim. It looks like it just was never cleaned. Brake dust and road grime like I have never seen before. Honda shows both previous owners are in Texas, and I am close enough to the coast for salt. Unlike what I dealt with in Chicago with my last GL1800 and the road salt.
      I have cleaned and replaced most chrome and chromed plastic parts, and buffed out the shocks & front end. The valve covers are next, but I want to replace them rather than buffing.

    • @DavidSmith-vp3dn
      @DavidSmith-vp3dn 7 лет назад

      Paul & Kathy Short I changed oil & filter (always fresh crush washer) - no signs of water and correct amount was drained. Changed all brake & clutch fluid by dealer while performing brake recall - previous service did NOT understand what the sight glass was for: filled to the brim. Fresh Honda brakes all the way around also. New bottle of 80W90 Hypoid oil and a turkey baster for a rear end change is standing by.

    • @DavidSmith-vp3dn
      @DavidSmith-vp3dn 7 лет назад

      Paul & Kathy Short And need to change the air filter too. I put a new set of tires on - but the dealer put stick-on wheel weights on! After spending all that time buffing and polishing the wheels - grrr!

    • @7863348
      @7863348  7 лет назад

      Personally I prefer stick on weights. The hammer on ones can damage the rim. My advice to anyone owning anything is to obtain a service manual on the machine. It will pay for itself on the first repair.

    What do u mean by road demons?

    • @7863348
      @7863348  7 лет назад

      Legend has it that there are evil mischievous creatures lurking on our road ways and praying on the unsuspecting biker. They latch themselves to our motorcycles, causing untold devastation and mechanical problems. But there is one way to defend yourself from these horrible little monsters. Attaching a small bell to your bike and hanging it very low to the ground is said to trap these beast inside for all eternity where the constant ringing will drive them crazy. The legend also goes on to say that the bell holds twice as much power if given by a close friend or family member.

    Have you ever opened up the transmission of the GL1800? My ‘07 GL1800 has recently lost 5th gear, and my local Honda Dealership refuses to work on ANY Honda over 10 years old, and the Honda Powersports Company only tells me to locate my local dealership, which is futile, since there is only the ONE local Honda Dealership on my island, in Hawaii, who is refusing to work on my bike! I have the Service Manual, but it is not as exhaustive as I would’ve liked, in order to attempt a transmission repair!

    • @7863348
      @7863348  Год назад

      Sorry to hear about your issues. I’ve seen transmission issues in the past that were mostly caused by running boards with heel/toe lever and putting to much force on the inner shift forks. That said, it is a very detailed repair and requires a week in labour, a very good technician and deep pockets. I’m on an island as well (Newfoundland) and I highly doubt any of the dealers here would tackle it. I worked at the dealership level in the past and I’d do my own if I had to but it would take me months doing it because of my work schedule. There has to be someone there that could do it, you just need to find them.

      Differant bikes for differant a style of riding. Not even close in comparison. Kathy would not enjoy being on the back of yours. A trip to Costco which is an hour away would mean little room to bring things back. We like the quiet sound of ours and the stereo. We have abs, fuel injection, reverse and cruise. We have an internal head set for talking to each other. My back wouldn't take 15 minutes riding on yours leaned over. Ours can travel twice as fast as the noted speed limit on the highway and that's plenty of speed for us. Now let's see a video of yours if you will.

    2:45 You've got a whole passel of battery powered impacts and screwdrivers and such, why use a speed wrench crank to remove?

      Because I want to show that I still like to use everyday tools that most people own.

      Or "KISS" Keep It Simple Stupid. I know, I know, I'm not suppose to call people stupid. I'm a Manager/Maintenance person in a mobile home park in Los Angeles, Ca. My shop has all my battery operated tools and my maintenance truck has all my hand tools. It's a lot easier stuffing your pockets with hand tools than it is carry a battery operated drill/screw drive with extra batteries.
      Thanks Paul for another great video.

      Exactly. I still like the feel of hand tools too. Battery operated stuff can apply to much torque to small bolts running the threads as well. I still enjoy using the hand tools. Nice to know you do too.

      With threads in (I'm assuming) aluminum, a hand tool can save you from ripping out threads on seized hardware, especially hardware that small. A power tool would have the threads gone before you even knew it was seized. Sometimes slower is faster.

      I like speed cranks, but in this day of flat rate billing it doesn't seem to be the normal.

    Would you not put anti seize compound on the threads.
