I’m 50. It took me 6 years to get to 1550 rapid. I’m hoping to reach 1600 by Christmas but it’s getting a lot harder to gain elo while gaining age. It sucks discovering chess this late. I’d like to be 2000 rapid by the time I’m 55. 400 points in 5 years seems doable right? Yes. When you’re 28 it is but your brain starts to atrophy after 30 at 1% per year until it increases to 3% at 75. At 50 your brain has been shrinking for 20 years. And you really start to feel it. I don’t think I can increase at my normal rate of 100 elo per annum at this point. But I will continue to try. Thanks for your video. Wish I watched it at 45. ;)

My number one tip to 1600 players is to learn from your mistakes by analyzing your games, especially those that seem to repeat. Learn the best moves in the common lines of the systems that you usually end up in (no need for endless chess literature at this rating). Also if you play online, don’t do tournaments. They are terrible for rating.

It's not your real rating. After making a fast progress I was stuck for 3weeks at 1220-1250 and I thought damn I have never been in the same range for this long and boom then I hit 1300 and now I am a game away from 1400 and the fun part is that I was 1220-1250 around 2 weeks ago

Super GM rating in OTB is 2700+. Just a joke I’m making to claim super gm status in puzzles (ofc I’m not). For our difference in rapid, maybe calculation is one of my strengths, but I have other weaknesses! I know I need to work on clock management and endgames so been trying to improve there

    • @macdonaldnnadi

It really depends! Everyone has a different starting point and a different amount of time that they can dedicate to learning chess. I wouldn’t worry as much about how quickly you get to 1000 but rather your plan to do so! I highly recommend doing puzzles to improve board vision and learning to see tactical patterns. Following basic opening principles is more important than memorizing move by move

3 things. Openings puzzles and game analysis. But that's pretty much online chess. Here's the truth. Only one thing matters. Puzzles. Puzzles teach you everything. Except you definitely don't know how to do puzzles if you've only done 10k in 2 years. You are only using the classical time control for puzzles when you should be blitzing out puzzles 200/hour.
