Jeremy Silman’s lecture on pawn structures is the clearest explanation on the importance of pawns. Wonderful, informative, no nonsense lectures. Very educational. Thank you. These lectures are eye openers.
Philidor was also of a family of musicians. In French, the "soul" (l'âme) of an instrument like a violin, cello... is "a mobile piece which supports the harmony table and RESISTS FORCES". There are whole books on how to adjust it to get the best sound. A clear parallel with pawns..
I just found this channel, and what a Merry Christmas gift it is for me. An accomplished Maitre D that doesn't drop the ball in his commentary is like a polished stone set in gold. Great job, and you now have won another subscriber.
I love this channel. I love the gentleman, who explains us the game, who awakens our fascination for the game. In clear words he makes the game accessible to us. Even long-time chess players always gain new insights from his lectures.
Jeremy, I watched you in the seventies and eighties play at the LERA tournaments in Sunnyvale Ca. You and Dennis Waterman, Walter Brown and the Whitehead brothers…… Glad I found you doing these tutorials: very helpful. I subscribed. Keep ‘em coming! .
This is wonderfully informative. I own how to reassess your chess by Jeremy Sillman, which goes over a lot of these concepts. This has been one of my favorite chess books for a long time. It is noticeably better having Jeremy teach these concepts with spoken words and emotion. Thank you so much for these videos! I hope you keep posting them
26:21 never in all my games have I had a bishop lined up to run off a rook in front of my almost promoted pawn. Mine are always stuck with my king the only one that can run up to try and help but I'm always too far away.
D5 will open the diagonal of black s bishop and allows the black knight to jump to e5 attacking the white s bishop.. Plus you can make progress with d6 after... So i think it s better to keep the tension and control the center in that moment ✌️✅ thank you for watching 💯
I highly appreciate the production quality of this video. It is great to see someone (finally) start to do something more aesthetically appealing than just webcam + 2d board. The narrative of the lecture is also great and very informative! I have some suggestions to increase the videos effectiveness that you can consider if you want. 1: Have your presenter be a bit more lively, use hands more when talking and if possible move through then room when talking. 2: Slightly higher tempo in editing 3: cut on action These are just my ideas that I offer for your consideration. In any case I have great respect for what you are doing and I wish you the best of luck with the channel and the videos! Subscribed.
Good video, but it also shows chronic limitations of chess teaching Let me explain. Take the position at 5:00. Okay, we get the general principle that white should do a pawn break. It's not clear which one, though. SIlman rejects d5 because it 'hangs a pawn'. True. But the suggested move f5 also leads to a loss of a pawn, and continuing in the line also involves trading a bishop for a knight. It turns out after a bunch more moves that Black gets doubled pawns and a somewhat weakened King position such that White has an approximate 1.2 advantage (by engine) , How to see that all in advance, how to evaluate it, and how to know the correct follow-up to use that 1.2 advantage is all very unclear. So this is the flaw with a lot of chess teaching. The overall concepts seem reasonable, but the implementation seems to depend on calculations and evaluations that are really, really hard to see. Someone please explain a way forward, unless it is just to spend 10,000 hours memorizing positions and the plans in each one...
Maybe you are right!! I see that the most important thing here is the general view.. The concept of paw breaks.. Pawn chains.. pawns direct attacks.. Space advantage.. The specific move in the video maybe be not be the best move for some ppl or engines!! the goal is to make video understandable from most people and player (1800+ elo example ).. Thank you for your time and analysis 💯✌️✌️full respect
That's a good observation. But I think the point is that we're constantly trying to weaken the opponent's structure and position. In that regard we can assess that f4-f5 makes sense because we achieve our objective without weakening our own position to the extent that the opponent can flip the script on us. Sure, there may not be a concrete way to finish off the opponent but that's when we have to rely our positional understanding to assess the resulting position. I would suggest studying more positional and strategic chess content. Eventually, it makes more and more sense. Cheers!
very good chess educational video... i hope that you ll get the machine that shows the text you read in the camera so you dont look next to it, because its a bit weird...
Please make the chess boards full screen with black background to the left/right sides instead of small boards with your studio as background which u show for illustrations. That’ll make it easier to see. Thank you!
I think you talked about cxd4 made by black. The reason is allow black knight on d7 to have outpost on e5 or maybe knight c5 heating the bishop and also control center by getting off the white pawn on d4...
You are maybe also talking about bishop taking bishop on h6 move it is protected by the queen and it will penetrate making pressure on king side and knight g5 next with more problems weakening black s king side

Great video ! Why not at 17:30 can’t you push the d4 pawn to d5, to avoid the overwhelming pressure on that square?
