Baka Mitai in this instance of the usage means like “ It seems like I was stupid” the song also seems to imply there’s been issues with a woman of some sort. Its a karaoke song and a meme but tbh it being a meme has helped the series become more popular and I see it as a good thing. Kiryu the main character is a very well developed character, and he goes through a lot of hard situations throughout the games. This song is basically an expression of the anguish he feels while also being an over exaggerated serenade likening back to old 80s yakuza films that the game is pretty much inspired by.
Sadly you didn't get to witness the "music video" in game - where its a man, alone, at a bar, drinking a whiskey and feeling incredible regret over a missed love. Its truly a heartfelt regret, and even without knowing the language you can feel the burning anguish. i do recommend looking it up even in your offtime just to kind of witness it. The meme status (and high view count) is kinda belies the hidden magic of incredible karaoke work of the voice actor - it got memed constantly and people still enjoyed it because the song itself was really well done
Fun little fact: Takaya Kuroda, the voice of Kiryu Kazuma, couldn't sing Bakamitai at its original pitch due to his deep voice, so they had to tune it down. All other characters across the Yakuza series who are granted the honor of singing this beautiful song, perform the intended version. Ironically, the version that was sung "wrong", became the meme.
I requested this because 1) it is a giant meme (that's why it has 35 million views) 2) it is unironically awesome This is sung by the main character's VA (Kiryu, Takaya Kuroda). It's actually a karaoke song (karaoke is a minigame in the Yakuza series), and it's the singer pouring out his regrets about his past mistakes. The karaoke music is all written for the game, and it's all incredible. I had no idea if you'd enjoy it but I'm glad you did. :P
My Japanese is rusty, but my interpretation of the song is that it's about being in love alongside the guilt and depression associated with it. The singer wants to tell a girl he loves them, but can't because he doesn't think he's a good enough person. He then reminisces on moments where he wanted to hear her say "I love you," but instead they held back and said "good bye." And it kind of concludes with the singer recalling all these moments and feeling foolish.
@@journie3042 this is also why theatre actors are good singers too. When you learn how to modulate your voice you're pretty much 70% into singing already.
So, the context of the song is... just walking into a bar and singing karaoke. One of the joys of Yakuza is that there's so much incidental side content to do to kind of unwind from the over the top crime drama going on in the main story. The cool part is that the vocals are done by the characters' voice actors (which is why this is the Kiryu version as its Kiryu's voice actor). I also suggest looking up a video of the song as it appears in game because karaoke is kinda amazing visually. It starts with characters awkwardly standing in front of the bar singing but as they get into it, the scene dissolves into a music video.
I love how you went through all three stages of Bakamitai acceptance by the end of the first chorus. "Kinda odd, kinda campy, let's see," to "Wait, I'm kinda diggin' this," to "Oh my god this a banger," all within two minutes.
I don't know if it's in your plans already, but you seem like the kinda man who would appreciate "Trouble shooting star" from Yakuza 0. It's an absolute blast
Worth noting there are five versions of this song, 4 in Japanese, 1 in English. There's this one by Takaya Kuroda, others by Koichi Yamadera, Rikiya Koyama and Ken Yasuda, and finally the dub version by Greg Chun. Personally, I think Yamadera's version is the best one.
It's a very, very 'late Showa period' styled song. That's around mid '80s for us Gaijin. A period where the post war economic boom was ending, the nation's culture was transforming, and naturally some very melancholic and nostalgic music came into vogue.

Its worth noting fave characters sang this track with seven renditions of it across the series (most of them in Yakuza 5). Also for a fun fact: During the visualization of the musical fantasy, the "music video" fantasy segments, each character has a different photograph of someone or something they miss they look at.
Most characters actually have more then one picture to look at chosen randomly, that's part of it's meme power. In most games in which Kiryu sings it has at least 3 different pictures and often there are extra pictures unlocked based on completion. In the music video segment for Kiryu's other song the membership of the band changes over the course of the games.

Sadly, this song is not associated with any one moment in the series, but is instead one of the many karaoke songs available for play in a minigame. Every Yakuza game (save the Judgment spinoffs, for legal/financial reasons) has a karaoke game, with songs often sung by the voice actors for each character. Baka Mitai is simply the most famous of the karaoke songs, and arguably not even the best. Other standout Yakuza karaoke songs include, but are not limited to: 24 Hour Cinderella, Machine Gun Kiss, Judgment (no relation to the game), Like a Butterfly, and Get to the Top.
The Yakuza serie is also famous for over the top production quality for "small moments" in the game like pool mini game, host club, gambling, fishing, pizza delivery, karaoke, cart racing etc like this one. They build in full racing, crane claw machine, whole SEGA arcade library game etc; the theory among fan is allowing the players to immersing in night life in Tokyo and the arcade game culture as the Yakuza's main profit coming from the night distrct. Also the main characters are often pointed out by fans that they are very talented, well meaning, honorable individuals that have many skills and talents growing up on the street but can not distant themself from crimes and the gangster life and can not acclimate into civilian life.
Hi there Uncle Jesse, long time no see. I saw Yakuza 0 and just had to see your reaction. Baka Mitai is a sad, somber song, were the Main character Kiryu is thinking about his feelings and memories, mostly about a "failed" relationship with childhood friend. But it is beautiful nontheless. I have to say, Yakuza 0 is still one of the best games out there and there is nothing quite like it. It has a little bit of everything. Serious crime drama, funny gags, old school arcade cabinet games to play, Disco dances, toy kart racing, Karaoke, you name it. Speaking of Karaoke and Disco, here´s some sugestions: - 24 hour Cinderella; - Kiryu and Nishiki's judgement but it's a proper duet; - Queen of Passion; - Friday Night. I do not speak Japanese but I really like the Japanese approach to musical composition. There's just something universal when they arrange songs that even if you have no idea what they're singing about, the general rhythm and vocals are enough for you to feel the emotion and message of the song.

Woah, never expected Roberto Carlos to be mentioned here! "Amigo" is a ver beautiful song, I don't know which version you heard, but the one I grew up to was in Portuguese (Brazilian). If you like this kind of melody, another famous one is "Canção da América" from Milton Nascimento (also a Brazilian musician legend like Roberto Carlos). Just be aware that this one is usually "super copyrighted" here on RUclips so watch out if you end up doing a reaction.
baka mitai happens during a very significant point indeed, You go to your first karaoke bar and indulge in the famous song first hand for the first time!
This particular song makes me wanna see your reaction to "Lady of the Pier" from the game: Devotion. also super beautifully sad song, made even sadder that the game was taken off stores by the Chinese government.
Hey man, just want to say that Roberto Carlos - Amigo is actually in portuguese (he’s brazillian); and he’s kind of a meme here because every end of year the biggest TV channel invites him to do a new year’s show, so it’s like “ok, another year has passed, another Roberto Carlos special, yatta yatta yatta…”
Of course he can sing in spanish too, and there a really cool version that become very popular in Spanish speaking countries, but the original is in portuguese
I'm not sure if you take requests from RUclips comments but if you're interested in listening to more Yakuza, a couple of tracks from the most recent title (Like a Dragon) are absolutely immense and are right up your alley. Check them out! The tracks are "Cold-blooded" and "Receive and Turn You". I loved your reaction to Hades - Scourge of the Furies, by the way. That track hit you like a sledgehammer!
Dunno if you'll ever read this, but if JUDGEMENT, from this game also ever lands on your request list, I suggest looking for a version that shows the Karaoke video that plays in the game while you 'sing' it. It's a fantastic visual that really gives the song even more charm.
Yo Jessie! Love your content bro, I'm trying to get into the business of music myself and I've come around some amazing composers, such as DM Dokuro. May I suggest you listen to one of his songs by the name of "Roar of the jungle Dragon", it sounds very cool and i would love seeing your reaction to that song, much love and keep up the content my guy!
This song got meme status, but the best meme song from yakuza is either "24 hour Cinderella" or "Get to the top", both sung in game by Goro Majima, the most chaotic neutral character ever. Fun fact, the original voice actor for Majima in Yakuza 1 was Mark Hamill, but he says he cannot remember doing it.
This might sound odd, but if you ever decide to do a video on "24 Hour Cinderella" (mainly because of how many requests I've noticed in the comments about it), I'd advise watching a bit of the typical gameplay from Yakuza 0 first. The big thing about the song is the character that performs it, and it works best if you know what kind of person Goro Majima is before you see him do the song. Also, that particular song also NEEDS the karaoke music video to go with it. That song is a damned experience, and you want the full thing.
nah, while it have the memory scene its just the karaoke part instead of the usual bgm like boss bgm of battle bgm since you do Yakuza 0 as well, might as well wanna check friday night
As some already commented, this song is from a Karaoke mini game so has been sung by a few other people as well. May I recommend reacting to "As You Like" from Yakuza 0? Be warned it's very broken English tho. Also maybe Suteki Da Ne from FFX if you haven't.
This song's lyrics play a massive game on their own. Japanese is very vague on sentence subjects, so while "Baka Mitai" means "like a fool" and the song is constantly lamenting some action in the past, the language never makes clear if the subject is singing about how they acted like a fool toward their love interest and lost out, or whether their interest wronged _them_ in some foolishly painful way. On top of that, the singer whom is the beefiest and scariest Yakuza of legend in the country, is singing with a very feminine vocabulary. The whole thing together results in this "choose your own adventure" where any painful relationship memory you have relates to a valid interpretation of the song while the choice of masculine voice vs feminine wording leaves you to wonder what the heck is going on.

It'd be awesome if he listened to "A Scattered Moment" from Yakuza Kiwami 2. That song is a banger 😌
You should hear Akiyama’s version, it is BLISSFUL
Also I recommend you check out Pride From Despair from Yakuza 2 Kiwami!
I'm a somewhat new fan (I've only played 7) but these games have some amazing music. This particular song is absolutely beautiful.
I thought I was gonna have my face melted at the start of the video, only to have my heart melted.
ruclips.net/video/8Gmcc-2RouE/видео.html
As long as *something* melts, it's a good reaction.
you still have judgment for that (not the spinoff game, the song judgment from the mainline Yakuza games).
Your all know after getting into the karaoke songs he has to listen to "judgment."
And if possible "reign" as well.
I was waiting for this!
This is actually a karaoke song lmao
You also should look up the karaoke music video version, its kinda hilarious
You should probably check out - Tonight - restart from this night. It's another song like this one that hits arguably harder than this one.
Yakuza tv show was announced tiday coming in October 24 on amazon prime will beca Japanese action crime show
I unironically love this song, and I love the Yakuza series even more.
Oh my god, please also do, from the yakuza series:
Machine Gun Kiss
24 Hour Cinderella
Judgment
and, from Yakuza 7, Hell Stew (Zhao's Version).
You should check out Pure love in Kamurocho as well! Akiyama's version especially. Koichi Yamadera can sing like a musical god.
Awww can’t believe I missed it! Damn you RUclips notifications!
baka mitai happens during a very significant point indeed, You go to your first karaoke bar and indulge in the famous song first hand for the first time!
You definitely should react to music from Octopath Traveler. In particular the most impressive piece for me is Battle at Journey's End.
Have a handful of OT coming, just a huge request list lol
I love these games, this song has become a huge meme though haha
Makes me want to drink my worries and sorrows away while listening to this track.
The fight songs are amazing too
Yakuza saga is one of my favorites
As much as I love kiryu, akiyama's version of this song is my favorite. His voice is magnificent.
And this is just the first song on the album. The game's cool too ig.
You’re missing out for sure if you don’t give it a chance
You need to watch the videos. The songs have their own music videos in game. 24 hour cinderella is great and then video makes it even better
Putting in work! 💪😁
good, now on to Majima's Get to the Top.
Dunno if you'll ever read this, but if JUDGEMENT, from this game also ever lands on your request list, I suggest looking for a version that shows the Karaoke video that plays in the game while you 'sing' it. It's a fantastic visual that really gives the song even more charm.
hahaha i started laughing when the song started coz i knew how you would react
"That menacing look...". Double check the title: Baka Mitai. Here we go boys :))
This is the gateway song to reacting to ALL the Karaoke songs
now lets wait for the judgement {shinpan} full version, with the added footage
I was waving my lighter as soon as I heard the first chords.
This song appears in an earlier game too but the person singing had a higher pitched voice and it changes the whole tone of the song
English voice actor I should add.
"I was scared when i saw 35 million views"
(60 seconds later) *bobbing along*
How is it that I've never played Yakuza and I feel I've heard this before?
While we're here, you should also check Judgment from the same game, it's epic
This might sound odd, but if you ever decide to do a video on "24 Hour Cinderella" (mainly because of how many requests I've noticed in the comments about it), I'd advise watching a bit of the typical gameplay from Yakuza 0 first. The big thing about the song is the character that performs it, and it works best if you know what kind of person Goro Majima is before you see him do the song.
Also, that particular song also NEEDS the karaoke music video to go with it. That song is a damned experience, and you want the full thing.
DAMEE DANEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
nah, while it have the memory scene its just the karaoke part instead of the usual bgm like boss bgm of battle bgm
since you do Yakuza 0 as well, might as well wanna check friday night
such an awesome song
NO significant story moment, it's just a karaoke song, haha
Giving this a preemptive like cuz I already know
This one song is responsible for the only form of Japanese I am capable of speaking. Magnificent.
I almost wanna see Jesse play through the Yakuza games.
maybe??????
@@JessesAuditorium hell, i'd watch it!
Yakuza is the best PlayStation game I ever play. It’s legend
If you want a version sung by Spike Spiegel listen to Shun Akiyama's version they share the Japanese VA.
Bear with me here.
Lyrics:

Translated:
I've been a fool, and you've been childish
You fell down, you got hurt chasing sweeter dreams
Never could, hide the truth in your eyes
That's how I knew, that smile was a lie
"I love you" is
Something you never say
Couldn't get it out, always just pulled away
So then why, please won't you tell me why
You could find the words, to say goodbye
I'm such a mess
I'm lost, I'm no good at this
I'm in love, still in love
Still in love with you
Hard as I try
Can't even drink this pain away
Memories of you, twisting my view
I've been a fool
I’ve been such a fool, so immature
I chased a dream and was hurt
A bad habit of lying
Is shown in an emotionless smile
"I LOVE YOU" words that aren't said enough
The truth gets me awkward and tongue tied
despite everything, despite this, why
was it impossible to say goodbye?
It's no use, no use, no use at all
I love you, I love you far too much.
No matter how strong the drink
The memories never fade
I’ve been a fool
I sing for you
dame da ne
dame yo dame na no yo
Baka mitai is the greatest song ever made
Seriously though, if you have never play a Yakuza game before, please do so. There's nothing else like it and the series is absolutely beautiful.
Kiryu's version is good, and it became the meme it is now. But Akiyama's version is way better in my opinion
"Which leads me to believe this is a very significant point in the game..."
no, no, it's....it's a karaoke minigame....
É bem perto da música brega aqui no Brasil. Inclusive é a mesma pegada de letra.
Holy sheep. Are u reading my mind?
Next song form yakuza game : pure love in kamurocho 🙂
