- DAME DA NE. Yes. It's finally time to talk about Baka Mitai from Yakuza 0, from the perspective of a Music Producer, explained in a way that non-musicians can understand.
Is this song actually good, or is it popular just because of memes? Let's figure it out.
Surprisingly, there's lots of interesting music theory parallels between Yakuza and other games. And Lasagna.

The best part of memes like Baka Mitai is that they introduce you to songs that are genuine certified BANGERS
The best memes are music memes. Because eventually, memesters with genuine talent end up putting way too much effort into them. Coffin dance is an example that comes to mind. The amount of BANGING remixes that came out of that song was amazing.

Props to Takaya Kuroda, the voice actor behind Kiryu. In fact, you should check out his band, "Takaya Kuroda and Good Fellas", they make pretty good songs, and I believe that they sing some of the Yakuza Karaoke Songs during their concert, because, well, they are so good.
Was about to comment to say people should check his band out before I saw you recommend them! They have a RUclips channel (ruclips.net/channel/UC2gFeeHq6nnlGgJzdkWeqiQ ) and have uploaded most of their concert from last year on there :) All songs are written by Kuroda himself.

I think the intentional layering on phrases like "I LOVE YOU" only for it to be followed by a single non layered note ("mo") from Kiryu really emphasizes the loneliness. Like there was once this huge backing of powerful emotions and now theres just this emptiness and seperation between the instrumentation and Kiryu, the build up repeats only to return back to that same emptiness. It's really moving.

Yes, but it can unfortunately make people judge it by the meme alone and not dive anything further into the song.

Context for Baka Mitai. It means “I’m such a fool,” and essentially is about regretting not telling someone you loved them. The slow, smooth tone is supposed to mimic the act of drinking your troubles away in some Smokey bar, as Kiryu does quite a bunch.
Quite a few of Yakuza's Karaoke songs are actually deeply depressing. "Like a Diamond" is about all the things you want to do with someone, but you can't. Kiryu wants to be with Haruka, but he can't anymore. A bunch of the songs are like that
@@virtualcynical8515 You mean Today is a Diamond, right? Because that song is actually extremely depressing because the actual lyrics is talking about dead people. The last line was like Kiryu want to die as well.
Yeah, Alex explains some of that at 11:14.
@@komarunaegi7460 Yeah, Alex’s interpretation is more correct. It’s about “I’m like a fool” because the singer can’t get over their past lover. It’s a lot more apparent in verse/chorus two, but there’s also the part of not being able to “drink away the memories” among other things in the first part.
Actually it means "like a fool"
It's a really good game with good music. Such a unique rpg

From Asian perspective. This song is the best recreation of Asian's 80s - 90s song. Song like "Plastic Love" almost fall into this category (It's kind of more of late 90 styles thought). All the vocal, the music, the way it composed is bring me back to 5 YO me in the back seat of my dad car with his favorite cassette tapes playing his favorite songs over and over.
I was gonna say this too. Brings back the nostalgia when I was a kid watching my parents sing karaoke to the songs in this time period
I'd pay good money for a full version of the funky version

Helps that Kiryu's VA is frontman in his own band, and he's an incredible singer in his own right.
Of all the poll options this was the one I was least interested in, but I already feel like I learned a lot and I was glued to the screen the entire vid! thank you again for another great analysis :)
Meme songs are not always memes for their humour potential, in fact I feel it's mainly because they are low key absolute bangers.
For example, the YT algorithm may have accidentally got everyone to listen to Plastic Love, but the song exploded in popularity and remained huge for so long because it was a banger
Yup and due to this didn't the song bring some positivity to the woman who sang it?
I didn't get it-
The theory of memetics discuss information as cells and living organs, in which case Darwinism applies: if a piece of information (a meme) is duplicating and spreading like crazy, that means it is probably superior and more fit to survive like living creatures. It definitely applies to this song

So harmonicas, at least here in the states, are associated with the miners and factory workers of old. As well as plantation slaves. So they've almost always been used as way for oppressed people to express themselves in popular media. So that might have something to do with how we interpret harmonicas today.
Besides being a meme, it's actually a really good song
Baka Mitai being a meme was just an excuse to listen to it over and over
Both this version and the acoustic versions are great lmao
Listen to the Yakuza 5 version.
When you find the love of your life, and I mean genuinely THE one (whether friend, family, or a lover), just to have them no longer in your life is a devastating feeling. Knowing full well that those are and will be the best moments in your life is such a fleeting feeling. When you're in the moment with them it feels natural like this is what it's supposed to be but once it's over you realize just how special it was to feel in such naive bliss. Life is long and coping with the idea that you'll go the rest of your life without them is a hard truth to swallow. But it's important to be strong and carry on. If Kiryu fell into those feelings he wouldn't be the hero of his town and making everyone else experience their best moments in life. This song perfectly encapsulates all the themes and feelings Yakuza tries to talk about and I absolutely LOVE IT.
Your videos are amazing
I think Alex's assessment is spot on. This is a song about expressing pain and regret, getting it all out, and moving on.
It's kind of like someone talking about a painful memory, starting off kind of cold and sad, then they reach an emotional peak around the "Dame da ne" where the emotional pain is at its strongest. Then at the "Baka mitai" it's like they're still sad about it, but they feel a little better having acknowledged it and gotten it off their chest.
Again bringing that I believe instrumental... I’d seriously wanna hear a full version of that
I fell in love with this song the instant I heard it from the first time, even it being a meme. I ADORE the strings arrangement.
I have the feeling that Shun's version is the actual original song. All versions hit like an emotional truck though (specially if you had a personal experience in your life that is similar to the story the song is telling).
Finally, I LOVE your funky Bass covers man! Keep 'Em coming!
Well, Shun's version was earlier. AFAIK, Yakuza 5 were made before Yakuza 0.
@@Artemas_16 Thanks for the info!
The Akiyama version is actually the first because Yakuza 5 is the first time this song was used. Kiryu's version in Yakuza 0 came after.
@@umichandesu yup, you also had a Saejima version in the same key as Akiyama's (also on Spotify, there's a mix of the two so it sounds like a duet and it's great)

Glad to see the return of lasagna here once more, hope it makes an appearance again in the future.
I love Baka mitai, it is one of the best songs made, however it is also placed exceptionally well in the game, because i cannot imagine it being part of the actual soundtrack, because it has such a different feel to it, so the choice of placing it as a karaoke song is perfect.

You fell down, you got hurt chasing sweeter dreams
Never could, hide the truth in your eyes
That's how I knew, that smile was a lie
"I love you" is
Something you never say
Couldn't get it out, always just pulled away
So then why, please won't you tell me why
You could find the words, to say goodbye
I'm such a mess
I'm lost, I'm no good at this
I'm in love, still in love
Still in love with you
Hard as I try
Can't even drink this pain away
Memories of you, twisting my view
I've been a fool.
So, yeah, it sounds depressing and sad, because it very much is. Yakuza 0 was pretty much where Kiryu learned how unfit he is for the Yakuza lifestyle, setting up his near death in 1. Dude has it rough.
That’s what makes kiryu’s story so deep and emotional. He’s a dude that was incredibly talented and if it were not for Kazuma killing his parents he probably would have been a professional athlete/star and successful. Kazumadad lowkey hints at this in Yakuza 1.
What makes yakuza 0 so damn amazing is that it’s a prequel that literally enhanced the entirety of the franchise retroactively by showing us just why the mishmash of stuff in Yakuza 1 like protecting/raising Haruka were so focused on in the franchise as a whole.
wtf...
I didn't know the english lyrics but this hits deep...

Akiyama's voice is a lot more emotive, there's some points where his voice cracks in the chorus and it really cranks up the emotional impact.
"Fiercest Warrior" is a track that comes up a few times in the Yakuza games, it's the soundtrack for the bonus boss Jo Amon. Check out the different versions of that, you might find it interesting the ways it evolves and transforms between the games
