Holy shit! This guy didn't just react to it, he recreated the whole song by ear just so he could analyse every piece and then break down what's happening so anyone with basic music knowledge can understand it. This is easily the best version of a reaction video I've ever seen, my God.
Gotta say, I saw Alex's reaction to the Persona 5 Palace themes a while back, but this God Shattering Star recreation by ear solely to break down the song to analyze it has earned my subscription to his channel. This guy is a treasure.

There’s always a “Rain” and a “Thunder” variation to Three Houses battle themes. The “Rain” version is the one with the vocals while the “Thunder” variant does not, allowing you to better hear the orchestra in the latter.
Thunder versions specifically have more percussion, too.
The exemption to the rule being “A Funeral of Flowers”
Every MAP theme. Thunder plays when units engage in combat, returning seamlessly to Rain after you get back to map.
So that’s what the difference is. I’ll keep this info handy
God Shattering Star always gave me goosebumps since my first Golden Deer playthrough. It’s incredible how even if some people (like me) don’t understand the complex of music, we can appreciate how good this track is. Thanks Alex!

Yeah, if they were going to add another Fire Emblem character to the game, they should’ve doubled down on the music. Besides this one, there are plenty of other ones from Three Houses that should’ve been added like Roar of Dominion, Indomitable Will, Tempest of Seasons, and A Funeral of Flowers
Think of it like this, instead of listening to it in smash without any work put into it, they actually have to play through Verdant Wind to earn it
@John Ervin I guess that’s one way to look at it. Still, it’s not really about it being in Smash for listening purposes, no one’s gonna boot up their switch and then Smash to listen to a song if they could just look it up. We want it for the full blown Smash Bros. fighting experience in the background.
They don't want the player to headbanging so hard during a fight.
Twilight of the Gods is another amazing Fire Emblem track, and my personal favourite. I love how they turned an already good 8-bit song into an orchestral masterpiece.
Echoes OST is pretty much the best Fire Emblem soundtrack. Such an amazing game, I hope Genealogy of the Holy War or Binding Blade gets the same treatment with their remakes.
@@andromeda0388 I hope so too but the truth is that Gaiden had the best soundtrack and final map theme of 8-bit games. Even if they perfectly translate Genealogy's final map theme the same way as gaiden's I just don't think it will match up to Twilight of the Gods.
A C Gaiden soundtrack was definitely amazing, even before the remake and while Genealogy was certainly not bad I have to agree that it was worse compared to Gaiden. I feel like Binding Blade has a lot of potential though considering things like Idunn’s theme exist.

In that route, you defeat the CEO of racism, Claude calls the final boss a boomer, gives a friendship speed and hits a trickshot. Why would you pick any other route

Another thing I love about this track is that it’s so momentous that it almost feels like it’s past fire emblem itself. The composers have a thing in recent memory where they like to shove the main fire emblem leitmotif down your throat everywhere, including their final boss themes. But that’s nowhere to be heard here, nor is any variation of edge of dawn.
The only sort of leitmotif in this song is Rhea’s theme (in the rain version) and in the thunder version, at the same point in the song, rather than rhea’s theme, you can hear the generic boss theme that plays when you fight the the thief guy boss on the very first map of the game. This is referencing the fact that nemesis is an unordinary final boss cause he’s just a really angry thief dude rather than some crazy dragon abomination.
Anyways, I fucking love this song. Awesome analysis and would love to see you cover more fire emblem in the future!
I think there's also a couple of parallels between God-Shattering Star and the opening cutscene's music. When Nemesis first appears on-screen, the chord progression and impact of the notes are the same as God-Shattering Star, with only the vocals missing. I think there might be some other similarities right before and during the fight between Nemesis and Seiros.
Either way, it's one of the only direct places where there's a leitmotif between God-Shattering Star and anything else, which makes it stand out even more.
Hey man. Gotta make the comparison to Azura's theme in Fates and how it was supremely forced down the throat of every player. While it was a decent listen at first, it was everywhere. Not including when they out the instrumental on a large quantity of maps.
In all honesty, it truly felt like the sound design team were just patting themselves on the back a bit too much to the point where the song was drained of all meaning and individuality
the bells you hear when you explore the monestary has the leitmotif I think
I like the FE leitmotif, it gives a sense of connection to a series wich most of the games are unconnected
And the fact that Claude's route doesn't have it, makes it feel more like an outsider
That connection to the generic boss battle theme is one of my favourite parts of this track. Who would ever think of using the generic boss theme in a final battle in place of something like the game's main leitmotif? Brilliant minds, that's who!
God shattering star is one of the best final boss themes I've ever heard, and it's awesome to see you analyse it with such depth. I'd recommend listing to Daughter of the Dark God if you wish to hear another amazing final boss track

A man of taste and integrity.
Don't forget that this whole theme is basically development of Nemesis' leitmotif (that thundering, two-chord tune with that phat bass), and you'll see themes in the OST Revenge that are developed in God-Shattering Star.
Also, based on the context of the level it's played on, I see this song as a sort of titanic clash between an ancient, oppressive past and the hope for a new dawn as represented by Nemesis and Claude and Byleth respectively. The bass sections you mentioned to me represent the oppressive influence of Nemesis and the lies that he influenced, and the frenetic string section and the soaring parts represent Claude trying to break free of that past for a brighter future.
I wonder what your analysis of Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia's "Twilight of the Gods" would be.
It on it's own is already a godlike track, but knowing it's a reimagining of an NES chiptune track that also incorporates the game's and series' motifs puts in on another level in my book. Recent FE OSTs have been nutty.

I'd love to see your analysis on "Id (Purpose)". It was meant to be the final boss theme of FE series and back then they went "all out" with it.
FE as a series has always had very solid OSTs, but FE3H’s composers blew this OST out of the park.

It doesn't hurt that the name of this song is incredible as well. I literally couldn't believe my ears when I first heard both this and Shambhala Rain, incredible tracks in a game that already had a ton of top tier music. I'd say Nier Automata and Persona are easily at that level as well (Legend of Heroes series too), was honestly surprised to get this from a Fire Emblem game that I almost didn't play and ended up being one of my favorite games of all time.

Edit: To those in the replies, I’m not the biggest fan of Apex of the World, to me it’s just orchestral Edge of Dawn which isn’t bad, but overdone. Yeah, it’s got the instrumentation to back it up, but I honestly just prefer EoD to AotW, again it’s not bad, just personal preference. I also kinda played Verdant Wind first, so I have more of an attachment to God-Shattering Star.
Edit 2: I will give credit to where credit’s due in regards to the Warriors, Smash and Premium Arrange renditions. Some of them I prefer to the originals, they’re that good. But I just listed off the original versions here. Personally, I love Smash Ultimate’s “Destiny (Ablaze)” and Premium Arrange’s “What Lies at the End.”
I hope a funeral of flowers gets the love it deserves. It's not a triumphant battle against a dragon... It's a sad battle against the mother figure you chose to side with. And as you think the pain wont end. After Dimitri and Edelgard's death and Claude going M.I.A you have to kill Rhea too.

"At What Cost" from the Three Houses DLC has me almost equally enraptured, but God-Shattering Star feels like something that's ascended beyond the scope of the Fire Emblem multiverse and become part of the fabric of reality.
I like "At What Cost" and "A Funeral of Flowers" slightly more, but regardless any song in the game is an absolute banger.

The chorus in I.D purpose is simply out of this world. The voices are smooth, full of feelings and epicity that growths every second.
I'm really happy you called attention to the backing arpeggios! They're extremely subtle but have such a huge effect on the mood of the song.
I think my favorite parts of this song are the powerful use of silence and the INCREDIBLE chord progression, especially the classical-sounding bouncing between major and minor.

its hard to sit down and analyze a lot of Fire Emblem's tracks because by Grima it's impossible not to jam out to them, each one instills such a visceral reaction no matter how many times I listen to them.
Damn. Saw this in my recommendations. You really put into words the feelings and complexity of the piece and help dunces like me who don't know about music theory. I'll stick around, sir.
I still need to finish my first playthrough, I think I'm still pretty early on and I took a break since I had to take care of myself mentally, but this song is super epic. Can't wait to get in the moment where it starts playing and have this feeling a final boss should have that I haven't felt in a while.

When he pointed out the part at 7:04 and 7:22 I got major FF7 boss theme vibes, I've always loved how that buildup sounded and here it accompanies such an awesome vocal section

I’m still beyond upset that Three Houses didn’t get an award for its soundtrack. I would argue it had the best soundtrack of any game in 2019.

This look into the music was so interesting and honestly inspiring! It was broken down so well and made me really think about the song and what the composers were trying to portray.
It is heavily joked about that the final boss is the one singing.
But hearing this take on it, and you talking about how there are points where the orchestra is "taking over" for the vocalist since he can't go higher or to give him a break, I think really brings home the entirety of the Golden Deer route and how the characters look out for each other in order to keep going dispite their differing backgrounds and views for a common goal.

There are a mountain of great and classic OSTs in this series but if there was another song I recommend from Fire Emblem it would be:
*Don't Speak Her Name* from Fire Emblem Awakening.
A song full of emotion due to witnessing the loss of a loved one and it really hits hard. You can feel the sadness and loss of hope transition to anger and rage. IMO one of the best chapters in the entire Fire Emblem series.

If there’s one thing I love about your videos is your insight on breaking down the song. Especially if there are some things I haven’t noticed like the melody that’s used to support. Even learning something like a chromatic passage is nice to understand which I appreciate.

It's funny to say it but she was one of the most interesting characters for me.
I definitely disliked her at the beginning of the game, but she has a way to conquer just about anyone with her charm, or axe.
