Interestingly, God Shattering Start, while a final boss song, isn't for a final boss that is a gigantic colossus or the like as one would think, but rather a human. By no means a normal human, quite literally a god-slayer, but the enemy is in a frame of a human. This, I'd say, makes the music work even better, giving a large than life status and oppressive feel for something that is not much bigger than you, but an incredible ancient evil nonetheless, making sure you don't underestimate them as anything close to a regular human.

1: this is one of 4 tracks in the entire game with vocals, and the only one with a male lead

Arise, you who cannot bear death
Raise your heads bravely and take up your weapons.
No more wishing for the corpses of your comrades.
It’s time to rebel and liberate.
    Warriors, gather to this banner.
    Run! Raise the flag!
    From the beast called God.
To take back our pride from the beast called God.
    Warriors, shout to the earth!
    Follow me through the wilderness!
    In the name of rebellion.
    Let your bodies tremble
Let your souls do as they wish
Like the wind that blows through Mother Earth(Fódlan)
Like the sunrise that colors the great Ogma
Stamp it out, raise your voice, strong as a lion.
Our cries will ride the wind for a thousand miles.
Let it reach the starry shores of the sea.
Reach high and praise me, for I am the one who will liberate you all.

I am the embodiment of wrath

    @ElijahW2003 2 года назад +1176

    SPOILERS FOR THREE HOUSES:
Btw fun fact, although the lyrics are in a fictional language, there is an official translation, and the song's actually from the perspective of Nemesis (the final boss of the "Verdant Wind"/Golden Deer route that this song belongs to). He isn't a giant, but he _was_ a very ancient and very powerful conqueror who killed the physical form of a creator goddess and made a mystical sword from her bones. There's a secret society you fight in 3/4th of the routes (one of the other comments said there were three but Black Eagles actually splits up into two near the end of the first part based on a choice you can make,) in Verdant Wind they actually succeed at the last second and resurrect Nemesis _and_ his army, right after you kill the cult's leader, Thales. By the time you fight Nemesis (and also phantoms of the Ten Elites who a lot of the protagonists descended from, who apparently weren't so nice and helped him slaughter the Goddess' children and descendants).
The song's lyrics essentially say that Nemesis will far surpass any and all that oppose him, even gods, who he refers to as "beasts". The song ends with Nemesis declaring himself as the world's salvation, and that he is the "God Shattering Star". Fittingly enough, the protagonist who wields Nemesis' sword for good throughout the game is nicknamed the "Fell Star" in-game by Nemesis' worshippers so there's an interesting parallel lol

In the DLC you can read some banned books in the Abyss library. One of them confirms that at least some of the Ten Elites had no idea what was going on or why the Nabateans hated them so much. Nemesis kept some or all of his closest friends out of the loop when making his deal with the Agarthans to gain the power he needed to fight his original war in the north.

An important note here: between the opening chords and the general tone, the singer's voice in the vocal version of the track is heavily implied to directly represent the final boss himself. This is HIS song, so the feeling of power it gives is very specifically HIS power. Similarly the heroic tone, as the factions in FE3H are multifaceted and aside from being a terrifying enemy to you the singer is also known as the King of Liberation and pretty much established the setting's current way of life. He's an ancient, larger than life legend of a man risen to rule again, and your force, the weakest of all those in the setting, is in his way. Good luck.

God Shattering Star gets me going every time. The cadence of the voice and the instruments that, at times, can sound overwhelming, presumably on purpose, fit the theme of the battle the song plays during, a large, murky battlefield with old warriors presumed dead marching for your defeat. It makes my heart sink at the slow start in the best way possible, then gets me fired up and determined again when the orchestra kicks in again.
Three Houses is def my favorite game I've ever played. The music alone might be the reason, every track is able to instill some kind of emotion into me. Serenity in some places, and intense focus in others. God Shattering Star in particular does a good job of immersing you in the idea that "Hey, this ain't no regular fight, be on your toes and be prepared to take risks and make sacrifices."
Side note: Part of the reason I cried at the credits was because Lorenz died in that fight in order to just barely let Claude finish the boss with a ~20% critical hit. Hate that guy, but he's a champ for that one. Godspeed, and may your hair look better in the afterlife, Lorenz.

For other Fire Emblem music, I would also strongly recommend Twilight of the Gods from Fire Emblem Echoes and At What Cost from Fire Emblem Three Houses: Cindered Shadows. The latter is my personal favorite from the Fire Emblem franchise and also features quite a bit of opera style vocals within it.
For video game music in general, it’s basically impossible to go wrong with anything from Xenoblade, but my most recommended piece from Xenoblade music has to be Walking With You from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. That piece is, in my humble opinion, the greatest piece of music I’ve ever heard in a video game. It is hauntingly beautiful.

A funeral of flowars is another absolutely phenomenal track from this game. It is one of if not the most powerful peices of music i have ever heard and when i first heard it, it almost brought me to tears, one of the most epic and yet sad themes i have ever heard, i would love to see you react to it blind.
Also just a quick thing i should tell you if you decide to listen to it. Fire emblem three houses has this neat thing with its music where each main battle theme has two versions, called rain and thunder. To expain the difference i will quickly have to tell you how three houses works, its a grid based stratagy game where you have units that you can move across the board to battle enemy forces. When you initiate a battle with an enemy the game will transition into a battle between the two units where you watch them perform the actions you instructed them to do in the battle. Where the rain an thunder versions come in is when you havent initiated a battle and you are looking at the board and moving you units you will be hearing the rain version of the track which is the full complete theme , but when you initiate a battle the music will initiate the thunder version of the track which is typicly a more simple version of the track with lots of precussion. You were actually listening to a mix of both the rain and thunder versions, you can tell wich part is wchis because the thunder version of god shattering star does not have the vocals and had lots of precussion and the rain version did have the vocals and had less precussion. Taking all of this in mind know that the rain version of a track is typicly the complete and proper version of the track with the thunder version typicly only there to makė a battle stand out more and is in very rare cases better than the rain version.
So in short, if you decide to react to funeral of flowers, make sure to listen to the rain version of the track it is FAR better. Sorry for the wall of text, i love your video and cant wait to see more of them.

It's always a treat to watch a musician's first time reaction to God Shattering Star.
If you're open to suggestions, I 100% recommend the Xenoblade soundtrack. Xenoblade X's soundtrack was composed by Hiroyuki Sawano, most famous for his work in anime soundtracks like Attack on Titan and Gundam. "Theme X" and "Codename Z" are both fantastic pieces from the game.
The numbered games are composed and played by a group known as ACE+ who as a group have composed for the Xenoblade games, and are confirmed to be working on the OST on the upcoming Xenoblade 3, and some of the most popular song remixes in Smash Ultimate, and members having worked on the OSTs of games like Chrono Trigger. The most iconic from the numbered series are probably "You Will Know Our Names" and "Counterattack" though songs like "Unfinished Business" and "Drifting Souls" also usually rank among the top of people's lists.

I just love to see my favorite pieces of video game music getting dissected and analysed. Often, when you talk to people about video game music, the fact that its linked to video games seems to decrease their anticipated quality of it by a significant margin. I just think its a medium with so much potential when it comes to art, be it in Music, Visuals, Story, or all of those, plus a few others. Its a very young medium, that unfortunately seems to already have too many conflicts between its role as a product seller, and an artform.
I hope more people like you, who actually is a pro in the music field, give it the time and recognition it deserves. Maybe someday, no one will look down on video games enough to say : "it could never be art".

If I could recommend and you've never heard the OSTs before I highly recommend Mitsuda's work especially on Xenogears/Xenosaga/Xenoblade. "Albedo" - Xenosaga 1 is a very classical opera. "Fatal Fight" #1 or #2 (I prefer 2) from Xenosaga 2. And especially "Godsibb" from Xenosaga 3 which I can't acclaim without spoilers so i won't and just say it is a great piece.

The mix of rain and thunder, the two versions of the track, is nice, with thunder playing first to give you an idea of what is going to come with rain having the melody. In the game, rain plays over your choices, while your controlling your units, with the vocals going away and the music going into that thunder track right where rain was to be like the thunder of the battle as you fight against this undead god like being. Honestly this fight is amazing and the music blends in very well with what’s going on with the game. Nemisis is telling you that he will kill you and your friends, and once he is done that he will rule over Fodlan, him speaking a dead language in the form of the lyrics but with every fight you and your army engage in and every soldier fallen you are ignoring this self proclaimed god wrong. The fact that the leader of this run, Claude con Riegan, has the star crest, being the one to shoot the arrow that ultimately shatters this god like being, is amazing. Best fight in game, by far

I'm not going to be specific for the sake of spoilers, but you know how a certain theme close to the end of the most recent 14 expansion, is, essentially, the Warrior of Light's boss music? For this part of the game, there are multiple 'God-Shattering Star' level people, depending on certain plot details and interpretations, with /you/, the player character, among them. The first time I heard God-Shattering Star, I had no idea what kind of song I was about to get. See, Three Houses has four different routes, and I had just finished the Blue Lions route before the one this plays in, the Golden Deer route. The final battle for the Blue Lions plays Apex of the World for its final battle, so I was fully expecting that to play again coming in. The pre-battle preparations are finished quickly, a short cutscene plays to demonstrate the terrain effects and point out dangerous enemies throughout the field, then
that *bass* just punched me in the gut through my tv screen
I was like, "oh this is gonna be good" and just kept playing like normal until the song fully kicked in, at which point I legit dropped my controller to the ground and just stared at the TV while the song blasted through my apartment, and just sat in complete shock until the song finished, at which point I went "god *DAMN*" and kept playing the battle, a newfound energy flowing through my veins
to this day God-Shattering Star is my favorite boss music, hands down

I went through your video here and it was a delight, as is knowing your channel is active. Very excited to see where else you take this. I liked your section about the variety of opera types being regional instead of this atomic singular like the intermedi, semi-opera, tragédie lyrique, and the preliminary description of arias which anyone reading should also note contrast with the diegetic recitative, so most of the famous opera sections are these time-stopping, flourishing arias. I have not yet watched your other videos to know if this is redundant but that distinction has been like a colossal polemic issue in the history of opera, and game music is so interesting and worth investigation because of questions kindred to the flickering of recitative and aria, like the relationship of the music to the internal logic of the work, and where in the world it really comes from.

The music in this game is perfection. The metal covers done by Family Jules are absolutely worth checking out too. This one features the voice actor for Claude singing and it’s amazing.

I think you would love "Funeral of Flowers" from the same game and written by the same composer. If you like your Scriabin, you'll love the tempo changes and finish especially lol

It's always fun to see more people react to this piece. I knew the song was coming before I got to the final boss, but it still gave me chills when it started. Definitely one of my all time favorite final boss themes.

If you enjoy this you may want to look the cover that "family jules" did of it. He even got one of the main voice actors of the game to do the opera vocals

I wonder if you've had an opportunity since this video to listen to the versions done by Joe Zieja (the voice of Claude in Three Houses) and FamilyJules-- they did both a version with the original lyrics AND a version with lyrics in english, which i believe they adapted from the official "translation" of the original lyrics and modified to fit into the flow of the song. I'm sure it's been mentioned in the comments already, but they are definitely worth a listen if you haven't!

I’ve been waiting to watch this video!! I saw it in my feed and saved it as I haven’t heard the song yet and didn’t want to listen to it before the ending of verdant wind. But I just finished verdant wind and this is the first thing i’m watching after!!

i've done myself a disservice having only listened to this song like...3 or 4 times
that said, the deer route was the last one i did after a long break from fe3h burnout. i'd heard ppl talk A LOT about god shattering star but never EVER heard it until finally reaching it in game and i was blown away. all the talk and praise it got was beyond well deserved cause holy wow.
very fun listening to your reaction to such a crazy awesome piece

14:01 if you wouldnt mind, i'd very much be interested in a video about that!
also i'm sure someone mentioned this already, but just in case: for every soundtrack in fire emblem there's a "rain" and "thunder" version. the rain version plays while you're observing the battlefield, moving your characters etc. the thunder version play when you engage in battle. they connect seamlessly while changing and it's all super well made and really clever imo. what you reacted to was a mash-up of the rain and thunder version, which is why it sometimes sounded all over the place and also why it's so long!

Love this reaction. I really enjoyed listening to your perspective on this track. There's a version of this track that is just the sections with the voice if you want to listen to it here: ruclips.net/video/0WMYL6HuUoI/видео.html
The track used in your reaction is spliced between the one that is sung, and another track of the same name that isn't. There is so much good singing in the Fire Emblem soundtracks, especially in Fire Emblem Echoes. So much of that soundtrack has amazing voice work.

With absolutely no background in any kind of vocal music or education, I've always mused to my friends about this song's Vocalist's range. they admitted it was impressive, but I was always transfixed. It feels so validating to hear you put it into official jargon and fully appreciate it as well. Thanks for the video, meatball!

going through highschool choir i always wanted to be a bass, and while bass is really fun, theres just a certain itch that seemingly unrealistically high notes seem to itch, "made of stone" from the Hunchback musical is a particular one i have to point out, as its my daily commute belting song

Ohhh, I definitely recommend checking out FamilyJules Metal Cover of this if you haven't already. He teamed up with the voice actor (Joe Zieja) for the main character of the route that this song appears in. Very fun cover and I think Joe killed it with his vocals.
