Your viewers can “make” their own value finder with a red clear divider (school supplies- cheap and accessible) or light gel (theatrical lighting -a bit sturdier) hope this helps someone.

Hey Sandi! I'm a young artist myself (I'm in 2nd year in college) and watching your videos has always been so therapeutic to me. I absolutely adore your bubbly personality and energy. I usually do digital art, but you have inspired me to pick up and try traditional painting again! Hi Sandi, this is an old video but I've been catching up over the past few days - watching some of your newer videos as well as going back to older ones! I was standing here cooking dinner with you on in the background, and I thought I heard you say my name - I was so shocked that I had to go and rewind it to check! 😂 I just wanted to say that I really like the way you test your colours/do your colour charts - it's very natural and free and is exactly how I test my colours when I'm alone in the studio and not filming for RUclips! Anyway, I loved those colour mixes you came up with. Thank you for being good company while I've been working in the studio over the past few days - I feel I've learned a lot about certain things I've been stuck on or that have been causing some stress recently. :)

The card you made was so pretty! I'd love to see postcard prints of your work and some of your characters as stickers. The cat and mice from the under the table series and even the outlets would be cute stickers for a journal. Hank, the lion guy, your paintbrush guy, some of the portraits you've done with a whimsical frame, and the birds from the bird series, Cooper, Johnny, and Finn from one of their many sketches, etc. would all make fun stickers.
The color mixes came out great, and the first batch of neutrals with the orange made me want to mix up my own batch. I tend to work more in watercolors so I leave my dishes dirty so I get the loveliest neutrals.
Thanks for the video, Sandy. I hope you and Grady have a great weekend. Stay safe and be well.

Sandi, I am rewatching all your videos! Learning so much. I've wanted to thank you for introducing me to loose painting --- game changer. I'm really looking forward to taking your acrylics class (and purchasing one of your beautiful paintings, ooooo!!!). For future classes or videos, do you think you might talk about color theory but your interpretation/approach/utilization (haha, whatever!) of it? Also, could you maybe talk to us a bit about why it is helpful to copy, as a learning exercise, other artists' work? I think I understand generally --- there is so much to learn from the greats! But it would be neat to hear you expand on it. Thank you so much for all you do. You are a wonderful teacher, and I am so grateful to and for you. Speaking of which, have a happy, blessed Thanksgiving!!!

This is amazing as I have never dreamed of cooying other artists. Why do you like Porter's art more than your own??? Artists today all seem to struggle with finding a style. My art is totally original but I lack technique. But now maybe ill look at other painters. Mary Newcomb my friend's ma had her own style. My friend Tessa suffered because of her mother and Tessa has always struggled to be more than her mother. Look at Tessa Newcomb and I love her ma's art.

I found I like a greener light teal that I mixed using a dark blue, a phthalo green, and a lot of white better. It is fun to mix and discover new colors. I've been into blues lately too, especially Indanthrene blue. Have a great weekend.

Thanks Sandi,Really good tips.I think I am a lot less organised than you when I paint,I get so lost in the process that I just mix what’s there,it doesn’t always turn out great but if I am left with a mixed colour on my palette then I scrape it up and put it in an airtight container to use again as I maybe couldn’t get that colour just so again,it’s pure laziness on my part so it’s good for me to watch someone doing it the organised way.Love Coopeys haircut too ❤️😘

That papa bear paint jar is huge! You could get some good exercise picking those up. I've seen them at the Jerry's but just have the small ones. Baby bear is much more affordable. My color charts look like yours, with notes and stuff written all over them so I can TRY and remember what I did. That teal and orange are fantastic. Manganese and yellow ochre, or try the cerulean and yellow ochre, make a beautiful color.

It's a good challenge on paper, but sometimes it's just not the right one for you, depending where you're at.
Also, the red plexiglas works so well!
For lighter mixes, any light color will do. Light pink is actually a good one to lighten up colors.

The colour mixing tips are just fascinating to me~ I’ve honestly never thought of adding in orange to cerulean blue! But I tend to stick with my pencils because I’m not very comfortable with painting yet. You definitely inspire me to try to pick up a brush and give it a go, playing with those colours looks like so much fun! Thank you for sharing

So to that end off to amazon I went, not sure if these will work the same way, but I’m hoping. I have a pair of red lens sunglasses in my cart. I’m looking forward to trying them out. Been staring at a lot of paintings lately. Love your videos as always.

I like the idea of lightening with another color instead of white (either mixed in or glazed.) I’m curious, though, if you have tried the Liquitex soft body “transparent mixing white.” It’s zinc white, which you probably know from your oil painting days is far less opaque than titanium white, and has far less tinting strength (and in oils, takes forever to dry.) It will lighten the color without giving that chalkiness/pastel effect that titanium white can cause, and might be a solution if you want a more subtle value change. I’ve noticed it is also sometimes mixed with titanium white in student grade “titanium white” oil paint, like Winton, which actually makes the paint a little easier to control, and some professionals prefer it, too. I’ve never tried it in acrylics though, and am considering buying it. Presumably there would be no difference in drying time with an acrylic base.

I found if challenges are too focused I don't enjoy them. Maybe making it just a sketchbook full of studies from lots of artists would be fun. 🤗 I just got a zeta for the first time and I'm planning on making mine just a book of patterns to use in backgrounds.
I like the wonky Constantine sketchbook! ❤️ Global arts Travelog makes a 5.5x5.5 square book. I don't know if you liked that green one you bought or not? Same brand. I love how light weight they are for pleinair.😍❤️

    • @sandihester

Sandi! Light pink is my favorite color and I think you will love it next to your new orange! And also, I am 100% with you on teal, however, I will admit it looks really good as an accent and especially when paired with vermilion. I also wanted to ask you - and I apologize if I’ve missed this - but what are your thoughts on the Holbein Acryla Gouache vs. Liquitex Acrylic Gouache? I’m thinking the Holbein tubes are simply not large enough for what you do, but I wasn’t sure about the quality comparison. Anyway, thanks as always for the awesome video, it’s the highlight of my week!! - Stacie

Hey hey Sandi! Quick question... can you elaborate on how you and Fairfield Porter "put the paint down on the canvas"? You said you use to do it that same as Fairfield with your oil paints, but that you don't like to do it that way. How did he/you put down your paint? What does that mean?

    • @sandihester
      @sandihester  2 года назад

That would be too hard in a comment but it has to do with the way one loads the brush, mixes just slightly in the palette and then the laying of the paint down
