Unlocking 2001 to 2005 GM Class II RDS Stereo Systems

- This is a demonstration of what the radio does, and it shows which chip where, needs to be removed in order for the radio to work with out taking it to the dealership and paying them $50 to $100 to unlock the radio for you. This saves you their excuses, and saves you money to get tunes back in your car.
Side Effects to Consider before doing this:
1. AM/FM/CD Only Decks will always have the Tape icon on.
2. All Units will display CAL ERR upon first power up (goes away in 3 seconds).
3. When powered on a bench out of car, the display will dim it self slightly (BCM tells them to dim or not. Defaults to Dim without BCM signal)
4. I believe this is a wiring issue in the harness, but I have heard they can lose their Presets each time power is removed.
5. The very very later units, 2005 to the end of this style radio, need a digital "On" Signal from the vehicles BCM, so if you wish to use it on a bench, the older ones don't need a digital signal to power on. It will see that signal in car and still power on.
*This system DOES NOT WORK* On radios above 2006. Later GM radios use an 11Bit, or 29Bit Data BUS (CAN, or GMLAN). All these radios need a digital ON Signal to work. There is an Adapter to send them the "On" signal for sale around ebay.
This strange system has also prevented car stereo "benchers" like me from operating the units out of the car. That system defeated, it opened a whole new range of car stereos for us.
Remember, if you own the car, you own anything in it. As such, you own the radio installed in the dash board, and there is no reason for the manufacturer to tell you, you can't change your radio, or install a better one, or anything with out paying them a fee. And really, ask your self "Who would steal a factory radio?". I stay factory in my own car because if curious eyes peek in and see a factory deck in the dash, they'll ignore it and move on to the next car!
Disclaimer: If you screw your radio up, that's not my fault. I hold no liability what-so-ever. This is a do at your own risk modification. If you do this and do it incorrectly, and turn your radio in to a paper weight, I am not liable in any way, shape, or form for your mistake. If you are uncomfortable doing this, then take the radio to a dealer and have them do it the correct way.
I had nothing to lose. These won't work in my Saturn, I bought these to add to my vast GM Stereo Collection, and to aid in figuring out the security in these, and how they were built.
I purchased my units from vehicles that are now gone, crushed, and sent to be melted down. They served their life, and now their parts, these radios included, are all that remain. I purchased them aid on a form site I am a member of in getting these radios to play nice. I have receipts to verify where I purchased my units. Авто/Мото
6 years and you’re still saving people’s butts. I appreciate it!
8 years later!! You have definitely helped someone sir!!! The first one, the one on the left, that's what I have. From an 03 Monte Carlo. Thank you thank you!!! The dealership was going to be $145 an hour to program/unlock. Buuut, I have to go back to the junkyard, the radio worked, but not the CD player ugh!!!
I JUST DID MINE AND IT WORKED ON MY 2005 CAVALIER STOCK CD PLAYER , EVERYTHING WORKS, THANKS A LOT MAN FOR SHARING THE INFO.
Last winter for no reason whatsoever my S-10's radio locked up on me. Did a google search and your videos came up. Went out and tried several numbers and FINELY got the code to unlock my radio. It's nice to have a radio again! Thank you!!!
JUST TRIED IT JAN 2019 , WORKED FOR MY 2004 MONTE THANKS BRO! WAS SIMPLE AS HELL!
Thank you worked like a charm. Just in time to crank my Trans Siberian Orchestra Christmas cd.....Thanks again for taking the time.
Thank you sir! Glad someone was willing to put in some leg work for the rest of us and was willing to share the information!!
Awesome!!!! Thank you... I bought a used radio, and realised it was going to be an issue. Looked at a dozen videos and websites.. ONLY yours was the correct way to do it... Well done.
I just followed your technique for a used radio I put in my Silverado, worked great! No loss of preset memory. THANKS!! This is what the internet was invented for, sharing information. I LOVE IT!
Thanks God some one doesn't talk for 7 minutes and no info gave away.
you where right at the spot.
Thanks
This is great advice and it worked great with the adverse effects. Most of them were no problem, but mine would always go back to track one on the cd everytime you shut the key to the off position. So some memory is forgotten by taking out the chip. There is another option that I found by accident scrolling youtube for other suggestions. My main proble was that the face plate lights were mostly burnt out and the cd player did not work. I purchased another radio from a junk yard which I unlocked by taking out the chip. Heres the best part! Once I discovered that the cd player worked in the new radio, I then switched out the cd player and the face plate. Guess what? Now I have a new working factory cd player with no issues! There are videos on how to take the face plate and cd player out, very simple.
I just want to confirm that if I pull the chip out that the radio is now forever unlocked? I guess my question is it's not going to just run for 10 minutes at a time with the chip out it will work normally with a couple errors correct? Thanks
Thank you so much!! My radio was the one on the right and as soon as I removed the chip.... I had radio!!
Thank you so much for your time and your info!
After taking our '05 Colorado to the dealership and being told they can't unlock the stero, that we could find instructions in the owners manual and of course charging us for their "advice", I found your video. Guess what?! IT WORKED!! Having to deal with the CAL ERR msg for a second is no bother. Thanks for your video!!
Pan you’re the man!! It worked on my 2005 GMC Jimmy. Thanks so much.
thank you so very much .. I saw the other guys that you mentioned. They would not help. but you sir, did.. and thank you for explicit details which is exactly what I needed. Great Job!
Now I have another idea about this.
I had a locked radio for a 2003 Buick Rendezvous. I couldn't even get the codes by pressing the buttons. I removed this chip (small screwdriver through the side) and the radio works perfectly. THANK YOU!
Thanks it worked just fine after 2 stereos we are glad you helped us solve the problem!!!!!
Thanks your video was of great help... removed the chip and bam the radio is unlocked and works.. thanks again
Hey Bro, I want to thank you for posting this information. I bought a radio for my mothers 2005 Equinox form a salvage yard that was locked. After looking at your video I was able to fix the issue by removing the chip. Thank you.
I just did this today! Radio unlocked and works great. The tape icon is on (no cassette on this unit) and the presets do NOT save...but the clock remembers the time.
My aftermarket stereo quit and this old factory radio sounds better!! Thank you for this video
100% legit worked PERFECTLY. So simple thank you so much!
Works like a charm. Mine was the type with easily accessible chip. Used pliers and twisted it off. No problems with "cassette light". Radio presets remain after shutting off. Has "calibration error" message when first starting radio.
do you remember what it said on the chip
Worked Great! Went from radio only to cd/cassette/radio/aux in a chevy express 2005. just as you mentioned... thanks so much!
Worked for me! Bought a locked CD radio for my 2005 Chevy Colorado, Didn't know I ordered one locked, found this video, pulled the chip, BINGO!! Got. CAL ERROR message when first comes on, SO WHAT, goes away when you touch the volume. THANK YOU!!!!!
Awesome! Just fixed my radio after replacing the BCM. only downside it now shows a little cassette icon in the bottom right and it's a CD only with no cassette deck. But I can definitely deal with that!
Man Thank you so much i have went without a radio for a year in my 03 silverado because it was lock i just ordered aftermarket radio installation kit harness everything and just seen your video just pulled radio out done what you showed and it works great now i have to figure out what im going to do with the radio and stuff i just ordered lol awesome man thank you
Love you video! FYI The reason you’re losing power to the radio after removing the chip is because the radio has no way to communicate with the vehicles communications module that hooks to your on star as well. These radios don’t use a typical 12 V signal for power the module actually sends an 8 V signal. That’s why when you put an aftermarket radio in the wiring kit comes with a splice wire for 12 V source. I also had an issue with my 6 disc changer Bose system after a CD got stuck I unhook the fuse radio went in and went and limp mode so and wouldn’t play the CD player. Radio just flashes the CD emblem. Remove the radio took the top cover off and got the CD out but still just flashes. Nobody has had a fixture other than replacing the radio but I found a fix. Like I said the radio is controlled by that module by pulling the fuse you’re not shutting down the module you have to unhook the battery and Touch the cable ends together for about 30 seconds to a minute and that will put all modules in the vehicle to sleep. I work for a dealer I have to do this sometimes to certain vehicles that do weird things sometimes you just have to reset the modules and everything goes back to normal. Again thanks for the video.
Awesome!!! Once I knew where to go I was able to fix mine in under 20min. 2005 Chevy Venture. Thank you
Thank you, buddy, for helping us figure it out and for not being selfish as the other U Tuber.
Thanks for the tip........... bought a radio at Pick & Pull you saved me $$$$$$$
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! My Pontiac grand am (2003) stereo stopped playing CDs. And my aftermarket stereo isn't ready to go in yet(still need dash kit and harness) and I had a 2001 chev cavalier stereo laying around. But it was saying locked. So thank you so much!
Sicckkkkkk it works like a beauty! Thanks buddy! Youve made a happy family!!!
Hi
I removed the chip and that unlocked it but lost memory so you can't store stations 2 days later I put the chip back and got the memory back and stayed unlocked
Thanks for the video
works like a charm. You the man! Thank you
Thanks man!! it worked for my Trailblazer 2005 radio!
This process worked. The board looked different on my radio but it still worked. I removed the chip with the numbers "9355093" on it. Cons: radio does not hold the programmed stations. When vehicle is turned back on, radio defaults to preset fm station.
So far it's not an issue but have to select which CD to play after each vehicle start-up.
THIS IS A VERY OUTSTANDING DEMO OF HOW TO UNLOCK THE RADIO THANKS ALOT AND KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK I'M VERY GRATFUL TO YOU
Finally have radio now my commute won't be boring thank you
Thanks!! that’s just what I needed to unlock my radio I will let you know how it turns out tomorrow when I get a chance to work on it.
Hola, retire el chip de mi radio y funciono como nuevo, te la rifaste amigo gracias.
Awesome thank you this worked perfect!!
Thank you. It works 09 trailblazer into 03 envoy
WORKED LIKE A CHARM THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot this video was really helpful I appreciate it
worked perfectly on the older model i had for a Buick lesabre 2002
Wow 2 minutes and I was rocking,,,,thanks,,,,,
Thank you, now I have tunes again !
Thank You very much...This video was a life saver.I'm glad I found it...!!!!!!!
Works great! It took 2 minutes! Thanks!
you are the best and coll tell every one how need help thanks and keep up with good job
Wow thanks man! great job
I just got the older model, but it was a little bit different. The chips had goo on them. I removed the eprom using a small flat head screw driver. It worked.
If you are not hearing AUDIO after doing this, then the issue is that that the stereo was programmed to use a different AMP. GM used BOSE and Non-BOSE AMPs that communicate with the radio before producing audio. The radio has to be matched to the AMP. I'm not sure how to bypass that
Yeah, that's the issue I'm having and also what I suspected the problem was.
Very helpful....thank you so much.
Pan, worked great. Thank you.
Thank you so much for sharing this information
Good video man!!! It worked out great for me!!

Fine Job, Worked well for me. Thank you.

Great video save me big time 👍
Worked perfectly 👍🏻
thanks!! just did mine so happy thanks!!!!!!!
Thanks for the advice. I have this problem now and the darn thing just won't budge from the "LOCKED" display. The funny thing is, I had just purchased the vehicle (2002 GMC Sonoma) the previous week. The radio worked just fine for awhile, and I was able to set all the presets and play around with the buttons to see what function did what, and then I was able to set the correct time. Shortly after that it just decided to "LOCK" with no reason. The radio was not changed, the battery did not die, and I am quite sure it came with the vehicle. I can not get it to do anything now (and the cassette player does not work, but I knew that when I bought the truck). I'm about to pull out the whole damn radio and throw it to the cows to stomp on. I hate the thing! Lets face it, nobody is stealing "any" radios anymore, and if they are that hard up for a radio, then have fun with it. With this one, stealing it would be doing me a favor...
It worked perfect thank you
This works AWESOME! What you need is a tiny craft X-ACTO knife, fresh blade. (The silver pencil kind.) Put a 2005 Impala ray-dee-oh into my 2005 Avalanche. For some reason, the number 5 preset works after power off/power up. Kicks as hard as a 49-year-old needs. Aftermarket is shite. (That's what I took out that was dead as a door nail.) If I want to get fancy, I might install the AUX jack, or just grab an FM combobulator and call it a day. And now, back to The Tragically Hip!
Beautiful Brotha!!!!!
Thanks for the video.😎
this helped a lot thank you
Thank you for sharing that information. I just bought an 04 Chevy Tahoe LTZ Z21 AND when we got it, the stereo was locked. Still is actually. It has a red screen and only says LOCKED on it. So hopefully your advice helps. Thank you.
Thank you for the information I am so glad somebody posted the real video of the two videos suck major thank you
How to connect it to speakers?
Thanks for the help!
God bless you good sir
Nice video. 👍👍
Thank you for the information.....
towards the end of your highly informative video you confused me. Not that hard to do BUT anyway. Lemme ask ya this,, on the 2 radios you had upside down showing the chip placement, after removing the chip on these 2 particular models, Do you also have to manipulate the wiring on those ??????
Great video! My 03 express only has the one connector in the back, like the way you have the speaker set up in the video, do I have to make anymodifications to the wiring harness or connections? Please let me know. Thanks!
worked great, thanks
thank you......it worked......Mine is like the one on the left...! 🙂
Thx man you awesome bruh
works great , thank you
Great help, thank you
Can you tell me what the smaller plug is for on the back? there is the bigger, standard wiring harness, then a smaller one which is a mystery to me (no install videos have that plug). I'm trying to put in an aftermarket stereo and I don't know what to do with the second plug (since there is only one harness plug input on the aftermarket). I tried to just ignore it and use the standard wiring harness in my car stereo want turn on. Any help is GREATLY appreciate! I'm stuck with my dash apart. I've never seen this two plug setup. Aftermarket stereos only have one harness plug. Thanks!
Does anyone know exactly why GM made two different models of this radio? I've heard that you have to get the exact one for your vehicle otherwise it will not work, even if the radio looks the same. Anyone know what's different about them and what makes them not interchangeable? I have a 2005 Chevy Impala and my radio comes without the RDS logo on the display but others display the RDS logo. Is that also a clue indicating that the ones with the RDS logo are the older ones and the ones without are the newer ones?
Thank you man
You shouldn't need too in vehicle as the computer in the car is still providing the radio the "On" signal. The wire trick I use, is to turn the radio on, outside of the car like in the video, or in other types of vehicles that this radio can, and does fit in that do not provide the "on" signal. Not to sound confusing and all.
This sound great I hope it works ! I see you have a keyfob can you do video about how to set it ,I tried to follow another video about it but it didn't work !
Pan I have a question. IO did what your video says to do. Thanks It worked but it reads cal err and then goes away and the radio works in the meantime. Any way of getting rid of that and how about keeping the preset stations.?
My cd player wouldn't eject anymore so i bought a a used stock RDS on ebay. Worked great but was locked. Attempted the fix by removing the chip (newer one in middle of board) like in video and it wouldn't power up again. For a workaround i took the cd mechanism itself out of the locked ebay one and swapped it into my current stock one and it works flawlessly now, so i guess the locking issue doesnt apply to the cd mechanism itself. hopefully this helps someone else.
Hey bud, I know this os an older video but would you know what would be the latest GM Stereo in this size that would work (all function) in a 1997 Buick Riviera?
Thanks so much man. One thing, is there any chance just removing pin 8 will keep the radio presets? Thanks.
+Pan Gramercy Do you know where the amplifier is located on this type of radio? I think it's internal, I just know I don't have an external amp that's typically located in-between the rear speakers.
My issue is my right side speakers (front & rear) are fading out for a few minutes and then back in repeatedly. I think it's an amp issue. Any idea?
Well.. Tried your method and removed the chip you pointed out. I have no power to the radio now. Ty
