- It is the most closed country in the world, the last great communist, paranoid and aggressive dictatorship. In North Korea, nothing or almost nothing has changed since the creation of the country by Kim Il-Sung in 1953. 23 million North Koreans survive in absolute misery, without any freedom, prisoners of impassable borders. It is in this distressing universe that a group of French people have decided to spend their holidays. 8500 euros for three weeks is as expensive as a stay in the Seychelles. But for this price they will have to be satisfied with rationed food, hotels without comfort, outdated buses... Not to mention the permanent surveillance of threatening guides. Claude, Henri and Jacqueline will discover cities without cars, empty shops, casinos without money. They will have to submit to mandatory visits, propaganda and forced tributes to the eternal president of North Korea. An incredible journey, as North Korea prepares for the rise to power of Kim Jong-Un, grandson of the founder of the first communist dynasty in history.

I'm lucky enough to live in a democracy but imagine being in a country wheres there's nothing more to choose than one or two sides. It’s disturbing to me. She’s so good at it, she’s probably done this for years, and yet she has hardly any traffic. I’m sure she’s basically forced to to it too.

That entire school segment filled me with sadness more than anything else. The best thing about kids is that they are genuine, and to see them forced to keep up appearances at such a young age is very hard to see.

At the 13:48 mark when the guide walks over to talk to the older woman, I wonder if the guide is a family member whom the employee is allowed to have them come in and do that work. The smile on her face and warmth in her eyes as she looks up, they obviously have a close relationship and the guide wasn't being rude, you can see they point behind them subtly and she understands and quickly gets up and leaves.

Two things in this documentary really struck me. Despite all the attempts of North Korea to look perfect they’re still hopelessly outdated a don’t seem to know it. And the naïve nature of the tourists who tried to slip the minders to see normal civilians. It was never going to be possible given how everything is staged.

Everyone talking about the woman conducting imaginary traffic, but nobody talks about the kindergarten, it felt so weird to watch a bunch of kids, almost babies, acting like robots, nobody crying, nobody acting like a normal kid who can make mistakes and learn about them, i felt sad too, it was just a performance from the children to appear perfect.
Why any tourist would risk imprisonment or worse just to prove a point or ask a question to which they already know the answer is beyond me. Really careless and dangerous behavior in my opinion, and they are lucky their stay wasn’t “extended”. Plus no regard for the possible harm they were putting the tour guides in. I would smile politely, shut up, and do as I’m told and only relax once my plane was out of DPRK airspace!

A North Korean fisherman while out at sea heard South Korean radio program broadcast and in the radio program a character was having a conversation with another character about why they were late and said because "all of the vehicle parking places were taken" so she had to drive further away to finally find a place to park their car. The Sailor laughed at what he thought was silly South Korean propaganda. But he went home and that thought tumbled around in his head and the next few times he went out to sea he would listen to the radio broadcast and eventually something made him think that it might really be true that there could be a place in the world where they had so many cars that they had no place to park them. So eventually he wanted to find out and he defected taking his boat to South Korea.
He's like the majority of people. Believing the sophistry they were force-fed by their respective governments' media propaganda machines. We are not that different.

A friend of mine in Australia was, a number of years ago, involved in EU aid programs in North Korea. He described how he travelled everywhere with an official "guide" who just followed him around and made sure he only went where the government wanted him to.
In every town he stayed in there was a single restaurant for officials and high ranking party members only. The food was plentiful in these restaurants and usually wasn't bad. As a "guest" of the government, he was compelled to eat in the towns party restaurant each night.
My friend said that his guide, invariably a low ranking secret police employee, just loved going out to the restaurant each night. He would just eat until he nearly burst.
It was quite a fringe benefit for a low ranking party official, like the guide, to eat in a high ranking party restaurant. He was going to make the most of it while it lasted.

Every single facial expression of these kids in North Korea, is completely and utterly orchestrated and trained in, nothing is natural child emotions.
I can spot this from a mile away. And the teacher too, each smile is fake.. Anyone that has worked with kids can see this.
It's astonishingly sad, that even from the age of 3, they are growing up never having seen, or themselves expressing, real genuine external emotions.
So how was it in China?
The same as in the West, frankly, genuine happy playing kids, goofing off, teasing each other, hugging the teacher, good quality teachers that genuinely cared for the kids. They were obviously way more diciplined kids, but mostly in a good way. The fair but firm mentality.
But when i look at every face in this video, not a single one of the kids are showing genuine emotion.

They might or might not have freedom of expression among themselves, they are just not allowed to show it when the "guests" are around. I could imagine emotion management must be hard for kids, but it's a great deal of selection: you can pick a few "model citizen" children among 25 million country for a single show kindergarten (and I guess conditions and opportunities are much better for those kids hence the incentive).

saw a documentary some years ago about 'doctors without borders' (or a similar organization) - who had arranged for a group of ophthalmologists to go into NK to help people suffering from major vision loss due to cataracts and other degenerative eye conditions that had gone untreated for many years - some of these people were nearly completely blind and in most cases the surgeons were able to restore their eyesight - and as you would expect these people were emotionally overwhelmed once they could see again - and they gave tremendous thanks - but not to the surgeons - they effusively declared their love and gratefulness to "dear leader" (Kim Jong-un - or maybe at that time his father Kim Jong-il ) - but they barely acknowledged the doctors & nurses who had actually restored their vision - and you got the distinct impression that it was out of absolute fear that they were doing this - fear that if they gave thanks to anyone other than their "dear leader" - they would be severely punished ..

I have been doing research on North Korea for some time now. No internet, hospitals without proper machines to treat people. No medicine, the government controls every aspect of life. Hunger is at it's worst. Unbelievable.
Cuba has some of the same problems because the United States has a tight economic blockade suffocating the nation's economy.

Ricardo,I understand about Cuba 🇨🇺 and the suffering of the people of Cuba. My parents are from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷. I am Latino/Hispanic. But what I don't understand is why these dictators after so many years don't stabilize their relationships with America so they can lift all these sanctions and their people could improve their lives and ways of living.
@@oswaldoreyes9066 simple, they are still in war, their country is still splitted into 2, NK hasnt defeated their enemy - the US - who still maintain supports and appearance in the south, not until 50-100 years later we could see some great change to the situation
