I homeschool my grandsons and had such a hard time with e and I sounds. I would try to make the sound and of course end up changing the word. They thought it was so funny. Thank you so much! This has been such a great help
my four adult children learned to read in pre K and before using abeka at trinity christian school in north highlands, california, all are very smart to this day, i encourage any moms out there to use this program.
Love this video for beginner abeka teachers. I’m starting from ground zero and would love more of these “wish I’d known at the beginning” videos for this curriculum!
Thank you Valerie for passing this along!!!! This is my first year teaching Abeka K5 and this information is going to help me tremendously. God Bless!!!
Hi, Tosha! Thank you so much for commenting! I'm so happy to hear it was a help. I hope you have a terrific first year! Please let me know if I can be of any further help.
Thank you so much for these tips! My daughter and I have been working for about 5 months now on phonics and by introducing the vowel sound this way it has cut down on so much confusion and she remembers them in a fun way! Thank you! Thank you!
Thank you!! This is so very helpful! I'm teaching my 2nd grader using Abeka for the first time and didn't buy the DVDs, just the written curriculum. I'm so happy you shared this!
Thank you for sharing this information! Our lo is on the spectrum and so homeschooling her comes with additional challenges. This will be INVALUABLE as I begin on this journal and am deeply grateful for you taking time to create this video with such specific details! I feel a little less intimidated the more information I have especially tools like this!
Oh my goodness!! I’m BRAND NEW to teaching Abeka and I’m starting with Kindergarten so this was a HUGE HELP as I’m preparing to teach my new little ones. Thank you SO MUCH!! I will be following you for ALL the wealth of knowledge you surely have!!
Your videos were recommended from the Abeka Homeschoolers Facebook page. I can see why 😊 My daughter will be starting 1st grade in August however after getting my curriculum yesterday, I am worried about her reading skills. She did not get the foundation Abeka provides last year. She does read a little however we need some big review. I’m going to look through some of your other videos to see of any materials you recommend. If there is anything specific for her grade level, to catch up some I would love the tips from you. Thank you for any time and help with this!
Hi Mindy! Thank you SO much for saying hello! If you're using Abeka for the next few years, then you don't need to fret - they review, review, review on phonics! I would also recommend their phonics games (be sure to buy the homeschool version, it's a small size perfect for one student). They provide fun ways to review special sounds or letter sounds. There are games like "dress the bears" (pick outfits to put on the bears one piece at a time), "bee hunter" (that's what we called it! I hid the bees around the room and each time my son got a sound right, he got to go hunt for a bee), and other fun games! I hope this helps. Most of all, just relax - you're doing a great job and your daughter WILL get it! Thanks, again, and let me know if I can be of more help. :)
Very helpful! I'm struggling with the same points you mentioned with your kids. We're on TGATB K, and unfortunately needing something new! Thanks for the detailed explanation. My struggle is as you said, deforming the words while trying to hard to stress the sound.
I don’t know why I typed next year...I meant next week! Haha I did this with her today and all I can say is WOW! She made the sounds properly for the first time since we began lessons! Thanks again! You’ve made a difference in our lives!
So i have to give an update about today’s vowel sounds and recognition.... He did absolutely way better with me using your recommendation for making the faces for the vowel sounds. Made our daily lesson so much more fun and less dreadful. We had much more progress today compared to the last two weeks. Thank you again!
So helpful ! Thank you ! I work at a family based day care and started teaching A small group the sound of the short vowels. I really like the abeka program, could you please share what included on the kit that you bought to teach your children ?
You can find the parents' kit on the Abeka website and its contents are listed there, or you can just purchase the items in this video individually. Thanks for watching and for the comment!
We’ve only been doing k4 for 2 weeks. My daughters did great but now they seem confused because in the first week it says big I little i and now we are at U and it says capital U little u. So when I ask then what is U they say big u. So we are now just using upper case U and lower case U . I wished I would’ve read ahead in my teachers book and maybe I wouldn’t have confused them so much. Thank you for this video . I was actually pinching my nose when saying I last week haha hopefully I will be able to use this expression and it will help them out. Thank you so much
Thank you so much for your videos. This video really helped my 5 year old while we're going through those CVC words. I was wondering, when do you phase out the other cues (the facial expressions, etc)? Is it something you do only for the first couple weeks while they are learning, or keep doing it for awhile? He gets the vowels correct when I use the other cues, but not so much if I don't. Thanks again!
I'm glad it was a help! I continued the facial expressions until the end of the K5, unless they were catching on and didn't need them. By the time first grade starts, I typically didn't need to use them anymore. :)
Hello! I'm so sorry to have missed your comment. RUclips didn't send me the notification about it! No, there are no facial expressions for the long sounds. They taught them the sound is the letter's name. I hope that helps.
Hi! I'm not sure what you're needing exactly. Do you need to know how to use those charts? Or, something else? I have a video which covers the visuals you need for teaching Abeka Phonics. You can find it here: ruclips.net/video/cPccpHu9uus/видео.html I hope this helps! If you have a more specific question, let me know and I'll try to make a video to answer. Thank you! :)

I'm so glad to hear this! Thank you! :)
You are adorable! I am a first-time homeschooler starting on Monday with Abeka for K5 and 4th grade. I hope to be as confident as you some day.
Thank you! That's so kind of you to say. Best wishes as you begin your journey!
How did she do with the program? We are thinking of doing this with my daughter for kindergarten too?

I just came across this, so helpful because I’ve been having trouble teaching the coil sounds to my 5 year old
I'm so glad it helped!
Yes! The short e/i sounds are hard to hear for my oldest. This is great information!
