The Joy of Reading - Informative Speech
This is the speech I made for Principles of Communication about a hobby. My hobby is reading, and in this short speech, I share with you what I love about reading, the benefits of reading, and why you should be a reader, too! :) Requirements: Annotated bibliography, five minutes in length (plus or minus ten seconds), camera on tri-pod, not handheld, no fans or background distractions, and five sources, none of which had to be peer-reviewed articles.

I looked at BJU and I don't see French. I wonder if it's no longer an option. Anyone know if it is there and i just can't see it.
Oh no! I hope they haven't discontinued it! It was a great class.
I actually have and used this for my 6th grader and barely got through the first 49 lessons that year. I was curious what other people thought and how they used it. He is now loving History now, so I am going back to it and will add the Literature this year (8th grade). Thank you for helping me to decide which curriculum to use next year.
Very thorough and easy to understand review! Thank you!
I’m curious how your education pedagogy classes compared to your experience with Abeka. Abeka is very focused on direct instruction, and not many colleges of education acknowledge its benefits.
Honestly, direct instruction is the most efficient way to teach a whole class. Project-based learning is becoming more and more popular and it is great, but it's a lot of work for the teacher to facilitate these projects. For homeschooling, I prefer project-based over direct instruction because you typically have just one student so it's much more feasible (and less boring for the student!). Direct instruction for math and grammar is the best method of teaching these concepts, which Abeka uses.
41 yo homeschool mom just starting grad school here, so I relate to some of what you’re saying! We are overseas so I can’t put my kids in public school, but I wish I could! My classes are all online. Blessings on your journey!
Thank you! I have graduated and am now teaching 4th grade. I love it! :)
I remember this book from both Reading Rainbow and KVPT Reading Explores.
I LOOOVE YOU!!! Love your courageous spirit about this. Also all of the directions/tips were very helpful and gave me an idea of where I need to go next to look into CLEPPing
cant hear ur voice lol
This was great. Thank you!
Thanks for the inspiration!
These are some great ideas!! Thanks for sharing. Just subscribed. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. I also have a channel and right now it’s mainly about homeschooling and it would be fun to be friends and connect here 😊
I'm no longer homeschooling, I am now a 4th grade teacher.
@@mrsbashamelementary I need to check your channel out more. Wondering why you‘re no longer homeschooling or are all your kids grown? We have been tempted to put our kids in schools many a times.
This is my first year working as a kindergarten teacher. I appreciate video. It makes things more simple for me.
i used this program for my daughter years ago she did not like it. but the math was great
It's very moving to see someone be so excited about starting a new chapter. I hope it is working out and wish you luck.
Thank you! I need to upload an update video - life has just been really busy. We are liking all of the changes though. :)
Went through the ACE program. Best thing that could have happened to me 😊
Thank you so much for this video! It was extremely helpful!!
Hi, I was just wondering what maths program have you found that has worked for you and your children?
All the charts are in the Handbook for Reading. I started out using the seperate charts and eventually just used the charts in the handbook. Never used the games, they are more motivational than anything. Had three kids never used the games. May be fun but certainly not necessary. I only used the basic phonics flash cards with one child who needed alot of extra practice. They're not necessary. I have written extra words on a mini white board for two of my kids. Also drew blend ladders on a mini whiteboard, the printed ladders were just too big. I loved the blend flashcards though.
Thanks!
Thank you! I have a question. I have a 6 year old and she reads cvc words ok. Her fluency can improve, she needs more practice. But with her long vowels , that’s where it gets confusing. Is this level that you showed good to teach long vowels or does it just teach short vowels? I’d appreciate it thanks.
Hi! This level will teach both long and short vowel sounds! I wish you all the best. Thank you for your comment. 😊
Amen thank God for this video such a great help♥️
Can you do a video explaining grading please
Yes please!! I need that. Especially for 3rd grade.
Very helpful ! Thank you
Thank you for the comment!
Did you ever use all about reading? Just wondering if you have thoughts on this curriculum compared to Abeka. Thanks!!
No, I never have.
Thank you so much!!! I’ve been struggling with it!
This is so extremely helpful! Thank you for sharing!!!
What about storing the Concept Cards? I have the other charts in binders, inside page protectors. But with the concept cards being a different size, I've had a harder time figuring out a good way to store them that keeps them accessible
Hi Leslie, I never used those cards since they are not necessary to teaching their phonics program so I don’t know their size. I would suggest maybe finding a file box their size to store them in or perhaps a file holder/organizer for a desk? I hope you find a solution! Thank you for your comment.
Exactly what I was looking for!! Thank you so much for sharing this insight!
I'm glad it helped! :)
I just discovered you with this video! I hope you are doing well with college. I love your passion and I'm sad I missed following your journey.
Thank you so much.
I was meant to stop by this channel today. Could I have your thoughts on the Apologia Physical Science 2nd edition? There's a newer edition out but the reviews are not great.
I have that 100 words every high school freshman should know!!!!!! I put it in my summer homeschool plan video. We'll start it this week so we can get a jump start on it. It was a great thrift store find.
Thanks
O
I just saw this video. I see it’s been 2 yrs. Are your kids still going to public ?
Hi! Yes, they are. It's been a good change for our family, though it's been tough at times. I need to make an updated video of how it's been going, but life has been really crazy for us the last year.
This was SUPER helpful! Thank you for taking the time to do this. 🙏
This was very thoughtful and thorough! Thank you very much!
Thank you for the comment! :)

I homeschool my grandsons and had such a hard time with e and I sounds. I would try to make the sound and of course end up changing the word. They thought it was so funny. Thank you so much! This has been such a great help
I'm so glad to hear this! Thank you! :)
Thanks for sharing your insight and review of this teaching system. ❤👍🏽
Thank you for watching and commenting! :)
I have some more questions about the curriculum. Is there a way to get ahold of you to ask questions other than on here in the comment section? I was told to purchase a teacher manual and I'm not sure exactly what I need to buy just for this one topic.
You can email me - my address is in my "about" info. However, I have not homeschooled for two years now, so my information may not be as current. Thank you for the comment!
I’m currently homeschooling 2nd and 3rd with Abeka. I definitely recommend the teacher edition. I usually look on Facebook or eBay for a less expensive option. I don’t use the lesson plan books. They are too cumbersome for how we homeschool. Even though the math is easy to grade for the younger grades, it still offers the story problem wording. However, once you hit 3rd grade, the teacher book is exactly like the student book, and the wording for story problems are not included. I use the teacher editions for fast grading and to clarify what they are going for. This is our 3rd year with Abeka (no videos). I hope this helps. However, you have to homeschool how it works for you. ❤️
How has your college journey coming along?
Hi! It's hit a delay. My husband got a job in a new state so I'm trying to make my way back into a school here. I will try to update someday! :) Thank you for asking!
@@mrsbashamelementary Ok. I understand :) And you're welcome.
Thank you for this.. my daughter is currently in grade 6 and struggling with fractions. Will definitely purchase these books 👏🏼
I hope it helps you as much as it helped us!
We did too! When we read one of the five in a row books for home school, we cook all the recipes in the books or cook foods from the book's locale. For this book we searched for the recipes online and made all the foods mentioned in the book for our own Thanksgiving (in June), including the turnips and cranberry bread, which have become a tradition in our home for Thanksgiving. :)
We made Duck à l'Orange when we read 'The Story of Ping' (the duck).
No prodigy math sucks
Thanks for this video. I was thinking about buying it for my 13 year old daughter for her grade 8 or 9 science. It looks like she would like it better than the high school level. But it does look young. How hands in for the parent is it?
I'm glad it helped! Thanks for the comment.
This video is so deep. Touch my soul. Thank you ❤️blessing to you ❤️
Thank you so much for the kind words.
I hope you’re doing well in school and your children as well. I also hope you healed from that hurt from the friends moving away I know that can be really tough. Thanks for making and sharing your videos.
❤️ so glad I found your channel.
You're a born speaker.
Oh thank you so much. For once in my life, talking is a good thing! 😂
I accidentally bought the games in the classroom size 😆 but it’s actually been fun to have them larger...my son loves them!
A "happy accident!" :)
I just came across this, so helpful because I’ve been having trouble teaching the coil sounds to my 5 year old
I'm so glad it helped!
