I have the same situation with the left hinge on a Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 7420. This is my granddaughter's and was brought for her schoolwork a year and 5 days ago.
I have discovered that there is a small screw within the hinge cover which can be removed to allow access to adjust the spring tension of the hinge. I have already adjusted the side that broke out from the screen casing and need to now remove the LCD screen from the casing so that I can unscrew the right-hand hinge and then loosen the tension on that one to match the other.
The intention then is to try and glue the broken hinge back in and pray that it lasts. From what I have seen in my research is that Dell has been aware of these issues for several years and the class action may well be what is needed for their own good, in fact a product recall would be an option here too.

U can loosen the hinge by taking the plastic cover off by unscrewing the screw inside.

It's amazing how Dell hasn't been able to fix this common issue in their PCs. I used Dell for my company from 2001 to 2007, and this was a very recurring issue. I then switched to the ThinkPad, and you know what? It has never happened with any of the thousands of PCs I had to manage

Just got one from a coworker who asked if I could repair it. Of course I said seeing photos of hers I said I could since with most other laptops it wouldn't be to difficult to fix. But man... kinda bummed that it's not an easy repair.
I had to tell her after watching this vid that I'll probably have to throw some JB weld in there to get it to stay. Thank you for doing the research and posting about your findings!

Good luck. I’m hoping there’s a better solution out there waiting to be found. Not super hopeful though.

Dealing with the same problem on a clients 7415. I know there has been a class action lawsuit started by a DELL user in Maryland. Case 1:23-cv-00937-JKB The nail in the coffin for the case, in my opinion, is if you had this same screen on a business grade, much more expensive version of the laptop, DELL swapped out the hinged for ones that are smoother and work much better but are more expensive to manufacture.
From the whitepaper of the class action:
    60. While the Class Devices utilize a dual-hinge design, in 2019 Dell began to use a
single-hinge system in premium 7000 series Inspiron 2-in-1 devices.
    61. On information and belief, Dell deployed an alternative hinge design in its premium
offerings because it knew its customers would not tolerate spending thousands of dollars for a 2-in-1 device likely to fail shortly after purchase.
    62. The improved hinge design used in Dell’s premium 2-in-1 devices demonstrates
that Dell knew that the dual-hinge system it equipped in Class Devices is defective and unsuited for its intended purpose.
    Not a good look, DELL.

I have a Dell Inspiron i5 model of the same laptop - I had the exact same problem with the right hinge of the screen 9 months after getting the laptop back in '22 - screen broke in March last year. I live in the UK, I had a screen replacement from Dell UK bespoke made with better hinges - so far over 10 months on I consider myself lucky as the hinges have been fine on this laptop since.

i see this design all the time even in hp's msi's etc. They cut cost by removing the need for intricate designs etc. If you are too hard on these yeah they will break. If you are careful they can last years. I see dents and stuff in the case of the laptop my guess is that your daughter was misusing it slamming it or dropping it or throwing it or carrying it in a backpack full of books . I am writing now from a clevo laptop from 2014 and it still serves me well after 10+ years now. In fact i just wrote my thesis on it and had no problem. The thing is that if you get something for 500 which seems like a great deal in terms of specs yeah it lacks in some other aspects. I wouldnt say not buy it i would say be careful with these and it will last a long time

From my exp I can say. Had a Laptop for 3 years. Just for working. We are not that wealthy so we take care of our stuff, especially while that expensive. After 2 years the exact same problem caused a display damage. If it is used nearly every day... It will not last that long regardless if you take care. Hope yours will live another 10 years good Sir.

Gotta love it when mommy or daddy make a youtube video telling you to not buy a laptop just because their child was super rough with it. I mean it is bent up and it has a huge debt on it. Obviously not broken from normal usage.

    • @FamilyGeekery
      @FamilyGeekery  29 дней назад

I’m glad you know so much about me and my child. The bent up parts were from me trying to repair it the few times before we finally gave up on it. And the dents are from sitting in a backpack to/from college classes. This is my adult child you are referring to, not a toddler. The fact that it dents so easily riding in a backpack is all the more reason to avoid such cheap craftsmanship. Thanks for watching, but keep your assumptions to yourself unless you have a solution for the vast amount of people who found themselves in the same exact place as me.
