I have been recording my own music for about a year now. I never performed vocals at all before but with your videos I gotta say I’m not half bad now. I’m having so much fun doing vocals.
thanks for the advice :) i'been thinking about changing a verse of a song because it's just too fast and too on top of other lines that i just wouldn't be able to perform normally, it sounds really cool but now i think i can narrow it down to something more simple and just as cool as it was in the first place. Can't wait for more videos like this!
Hell yeah! Sometimes just letting the song breathe a little can make all the difference in the world (and also gives you the chance to breathe 😂) Looking forward to seeing what you do and there will definitely be more of these in the future! 😊
Congrats on 70k!! And well deserved, I hope your channek continues to grow. You have been the greatest edition to guiding scream vocals since Melissa Cross. You are a master in your teachings. It's been great to watch and follow your journey over the years! Thank you #EVI
I’ve been a vocalist for 18 years and the one thing that I always forget: be ourselves, use our strengths and weakness’ as vocalists to make our own sound. I get so caught up on how brutal vocalist X or Y is, that it feels like you may not just be “good.” But really… we just all have our own sound. Cheers man. You do great work! Love the channel. 🙏🏻 If anyone is interested, Jolly Jack and the Jazz Flutes is my solo project. Just what I do while the family is out of the house 😂
I'm 15 years old and I have been learning from your channel for about a year now and I think I'm actually pretty good. I love deathcore and now I'm struggling with coming up with lyrics
but to go off of what you are saying in this video. I will write a song, and do a one full take of it. Then go back in and punch in line after line to make it perfect each line, but its already a song i've written to perform live. This is good advice.
I've always felt like there's a time limit to when I do right and felt like I should write the "right" things, rather than enjoy the what I do and be creative with it. This helped clear my conscience a little bit more. Thank you and I will have fun with the process.
Glad this was helpful to you! It can be so easy to get caught up in feeling like you HAVE to do something instead of stepping back and serving the song or playing to YOUR strengths instead of the strengths of someone else. Thank you for watching! 😊
You’re definitely not alone! Everyone goes through that at some point or another and that’s okay! Lots of professional artists even seek out help when it comes to writing to make sure they’re getting their ideas across in the way that they want to. If you’re dead set on doing things on your own, do some research on different writing styles. Mix it up and maybe you’ll get out of your funk! 😊
Its Strange I love lots of different music. But always fall back to writing metal type stuff its just seems to be so, but its fun to write different styles. great content.
YES! I’ve been watching your channel for the past three weeks and developing my own style and I was JUST wondering if you guys would have a video like this one! So much good info, keep up the awesome work, it helps a lot :)
Thank you for the kind words. Being “guilty” of any of these things is not necessarily a bad thing if it’s a choice! But sometimes it does take stepping back and realizing that you’re going to get the best product when you play to your strengths which can be hard to do especially if you get stuck on an idea or specific sound! Thanks for watching 😊
I've been doing this for over 15 years, I wish I had known not to full on scream and rip your throat to shreds i.e. Jane Doe era Converge and Terrifyer era Pig Destroyer. They are using moderate to heavy effects, especially JR from Pig Destroyer and I was replicating that as if that was their natural voice. Once I figured out my own thing and also about vocal processing I was able to do this and not wreck myself every show...also would have never drank alcohol before performing. This is a great channel, thank you.
So good. I truly agree with basically all of David's insights here. After all these (many, oh so many, I'm so old...) years of writing music, not as a vocalist actually, I find these guidelines so cohesive with the process of creating something new. But also, it was good to hear, especially the last part - basically, "It's okay to sometimes be judgy about your own creation, but not to the point it paralyzes you"
One thing that I am you can kinda maybe call it a little scared of is that when I write lyrics, I tend to repeat certain words (it doesn’t happen all the time but..) and if the ones that listens will get bored of hearing small little words sometimes repeated throughout the lyrics...I mean words like “I”, “we”, you” etc...And I don’t want people to be all bored about the lyrics I’m writing😅...is there any certain “rule” to follow on that point, to fix with it?
All depends on the delivery. There are plenty of songs with very repetitive lyrics - sometimes even just one line - that do exceptionally well! It’s a stylistic choice at that point! If that’s something you personally get irritated by then practice challenging yourself to write without those words as practice 😁
It varies from vocalist to vocalist and album to album. With the really exasperated sound because a lot of it was just emotive it would vary on the day to day basis. Most of what you’re hearing that you like is the constricted fry sound, it appears louder because it’s essentially a shout with the fry distortion happening by accident which is what makes that more damaging (too much air pressure = friction). As an alternative, you could work on the relaxed, very open full fry and then work on performing it in a more expressive way and the combination of the technique and attitude will make it quite “sound right” without being overly taxing while still getting the right idea across. If you want to know more about this style feel free to reach out to us regarding lessons!
See I went through this writing metal riffs but I need to do the same thing with the vocals but I feel a little closer than if I was totally just starting out with writing being that I already have my own sound I mean you get to a point where you can just freestyle on the fly an at times you come up with some really good shit
"Don't forget to enjoy the process." Thank you!
Thank you! 😁
Standing ovation. Thanks a lot for remembering me all these aspects!

My problem was always fitting the lyrics I wrote to the song. If that makes sense. It always for exactly to the melody of the music. It was boring.
My mans out here giving the hard facts

Meanwhile I’m over here with a deeper voice tryin to hit high notes like hairmetal when I can only hit James hetfields notes💀💀

Am I the only one being stressful about writing lyrics ? I'm always afraid that my work isn't great enough

This was a amazing video , I was guilty and still guilty of a lot of this . My head voice became something other than my own and it was hindering me .

You look like a mix between Taylor Hawkins face but with Dave Grohl facial features :D !
Sorry for that random comment! Great video!
Thanks for this! Very enjoyable listen, got me in the mood to get back to writing!
Well shoot, when I write I literally hear it in a specific singers voice, didn't know that was common
Not just what, but why, you like your influences. Yes.

It’s so funny how soft spoken you are till you scream lol

Do you do 1 on 1 I’m a slam/deathcore vocalist trying to improve

yes my lord

I feel like my problem is that I'm too simple with lyrics or they run too long and go nowhere
Do you practice writing away from trying to write songs? If not, maybe that will help!

what kind of vocal does old post hardcore use like finch and saosin use?is it fry?its sound louder than fry

My biggest struggle was I'm the only one out of everyone I was in bands with who didn't wanna do covers

7. relying on other band members to write lyrics and parts for you
Wouldn’t necessarily call that a mistake unless they are also making those other ones 😅 Not everyone is a songwriter and that’s okay!
