Principle number 4 really spoke to me. One way I get around from getting stuck in trying to create the perfect track is to set a dateline. It helps move forward. Really excited for the song writing course. Keep up the great work.
Don't go into playing the guitar saying I am going to write a song. I have sat down and practiced for 2 hours I have a 4 track on my smartphone and I promise this is the best way to find a hook. When you have something you like record it. This is the way almost every song I've written has been formulated. I got this from an interview with Michael Schenker he just plays the guitar... He says if I play for a couple of hours I'm going to come up with a hook. Then go back to that hook the next day if you still feel like you like it after sleeping on it. You have a keeper. Another tip, Do not go into a practice session trying to write a specific type of song you may miss some great songs because it wasn't what you're looking for. In closing, if you have a band and you are trying to find your style take that one hook you have and introduce it to the band. You will be surprised what happens when 3 or 4 other minds help out.
Nice!! Get to it! We also have a metal songwriting course here. It's not telling you 'how to write songs' but more so helps expand your ideas and gives you different perspectives: metalmastermind.com/metal-songwriters-forge/
#3 struck me pretty hard. I studied music in community college and it was always super competitive and I would always compare myself to other players. He’s spot on about how it’s not about how good of a player you are, it’s about what’s authentic. Also #4 : he’s so right about how some people use perfection to put off taking the next step forward 🙋🏻♂️🙋🏻♂️
This was really helpful. whenever I create something I always beat myself up saying it isn’t good or I’m not good enough but this help me quite a lot thanks man
Just stumbled on this last night and I just want to say thank you so much for this. This is what I needed for a boost of confidence and more information. I'm 50 and I just started writing again after 20 years of not playing any music. As I was writing yesterday I felt I had to keep reminding myself that there will be people that like my music and to make the best music that I can make. I'm wanting to share art and words for the sake of sharing. I'm going to make mistakes and learn as I go and that's okay. I realize my "work" won't be as polished and as detailed as "blah blah" artist, but you're 100% right... this is my art and only I can do it my way. I think it's easy to get discouraged, but if you're patient good things will come. I'm about 85% done with my first song and I've shared a rough mp3 with a handful of friends and they've been really supportive and positive about it. I just need to keep that train rolling!!
That's awesome to hear and so glad this helped! We also just released a short crash course on metal songwriting if you're interested: metalmastermind.com/metal-songwriting-crash-course/
I feel you man. I had a pretty great semi professional regional music career and put it all down out of frustration back in 2016. I'm now looking at picking it back up again and new thoughts are starting to emerge about what music actually is for me. Its been a period of self discovery and I feel really good about the prospect of getting back into it.
This man just changed my whole life . Good content, to me ,is when you come for one thing but get so much more and this is a textbook example of that .

So glad youre making youtube videos. You have extremely clear organized videos. I dont feel foggy headed by the end of the video like most channels that use click bait then the video never act answers any questions.
Never compare yourself to anyone! You have to know that only you can do what you do, exactly the way you do it. Focus on developing your own style and sound
Thanks a lot for this video! Not only gave it insight and thoughts that I didn't really had like that, it also reinforced some of my own beliefs and principles and it motivated to keep going this road, even though I'm not too far in yet and not the fastest person on earth. Loved the inspirational and positive, but nethertheless real and realisitc approach of this video! Keep it up!
I have recorded a couple of pieces of music recently which I quite like, but again they are not metal. I have trouble with writing metal LOL. My problems comes to mastering. Yes I know that I add compression on the main bus, to level out all the sounds, but it is knowing what EQ to put on different instruments to make the Bass come through. I have only had the bass 2 weeks so I am new at bass, but so far having fun.
do you have any tips on developing your own unique sound? i’ve tried to delve into genres outside of metal (world music, film soundtracks, trip-hop, etc) to get a sense of other styles i can weave into metal to take it into a new direction. anything else i could try?

Dude, there are no limits in creating music! My best advice is to not try to sound like any of those bands. Rather, allow yourself the freedom to just create. Those influences will naturally come out.

I guess we all are familiar with Lemmy from Motorhead here. Do you know why we don't have little Lemmies growing in metal and rock around the world anymore? Because the rock n roll scene is full of black metalers, prog metalers and cheap copies of Bon Jovi. And if this wasn't enough, these black, prog or whatever metalers are a bunch of nerds who sit down all day and think of "How did they do it in the 80s?"
Not sure I get your point. I'm actually glad there are expanded genres. Otherwise everything would just sound the same, being repeated over and over. And you don't have to be a fan of those other genres to appreciate them. Not everyone is like you, or me, or the next person. We all have different tastes. That's part of what makes the world (and people, and music) interesting. For example, I don't care for country music but I'm glad it exists cause there are many who love it.
It's funny. You sit for a while and get inspiration from nothing and write a few songs and then you end up a few songs deep and have no idea what to do next. lol
Thank you for the information and advice. It is greatly appreciated. Good reminders to sharpen one's skills. Thank you again for everything you do and have a nice day. Stay safe and may God bless.... Jon
