  • Hello! Welcome to this weeks instalment of Disney characters as Villains! This will be the last one for a little while so I really hope you enjoy Merida's Villain Song!
BIGGEST THANK YOU to the wonderfully talented individuals that have helped bring this project to life @nealillustrator for the INCREDIBLE and CHILLING animatic, Merida honestly scares me a little bit now, and to @JuneWestfield For your BEAUTIFUL and HAUNTING composition, you're amazing. You guys should definitely go check them out!
Now, for a little context, heres the story for this alternate universe and villainous Merida.
    STORY
We begin at the end of Merida’s story. But with a small change… what would have happened if Merida reached her mother a few seconds later? After all that work and all the suffering they’d endured, they couldn’t save eachother. In turn sealing both their fates…
As Merida reaches her mother the sun rises and Queen Elinor is turned into a bear permanently. But without any of her previous memories she is scared and doesn't recognise Merida, and so does what any bear would do, she attacks the perceived threat. Merida tries to defend herself but in the confusion is caught by her mothers claws across her face. The fight continues and it becomes clear very quickly that this is not one Merida will win. The clans scramble unsure of what to do but Merida’s life is in danger and so her father does what any caring parent would do and neutralises the threat. Merida is left weeping and lost as she holds her mothers dying body. her father tries to explain that he had no other choice but to kill the bear and imprison its cubs, but Merida is inconsolable.
Following this the clans call for a return to tradition, saying that to separate ourselves from decades of law is dangerous, as Merida herself has demonstrated. It was what the queen wanted. Merida’s father agrees to the law, keen to return to tradition in the hope that it would keep them safe as it always has and as a way of honouring his wife's memory. Merida must marry.
Merida is furious, to have gone to the lengths that she had and to have sacrificed so much only to end up back where she started. Whilst also grieving the loss of her mother, there’s only so far she could be pushed before the laws and traditions sent her past the brink. She had tried to empathise, tried to lead her people down a better path and they’d given her nothing but false promises back. Then they killed her mother. Her Father had killed her Mother.
Merida feels suffocated, her mind running round in circles, replaying the events of the last few days. Her mind is screaming at her to do something, to bring her mother back? Not possible. To go to the witch for another spell? Because that worked so well last time. But there was one thing, one thing she could do that would mean lasting change and would bring justice for her mothers death. Justice for all the people that had been oppressed under this patriarchal regime. If she did nothing, who was to say that this wouldn't just continue happening to those that came after her? Forced into a life they didn't want, but with no power to make change? And so Merida leaves to destroy the old ways for good.

I mean yes, she's got good aim, but she was just managing what arrows she did have. She used arrows to climb up walls, and landed several arrows on the shoulders and backs of her opponents, rather than 1 per. I think rather than her having exactly as many she needed, she just managed her arrows well. Her arrow economy was on point.

I think the detail of her wearing her mother's pelt is insanely fitting, because in Celtic lore, it is said that wearing the pelts of an animal will give you their strength and abilities! So not only is she carrying her mother's legacy and vengeance with her, but that might also further explain how she was able to take down THAT many enemies. Like, the girl is good, but damn that is a LOT of people. With the help of the wisps and her mother's spirit, plus her own skill, she was able to take down an entire kingdom.

Nice touch with the scars on Merida's face. They way she carried herself throughout this song looked as if she's been at war with her father for a while. She had tomecto plan and execute her moves accordingly. Leafing up to its dark conclusion. Looks like there's a new queen on the throne. Nice touch with the bear skin wardrobe/coat. As well as the wisps turning into a bear.

Man, what a dark flex from Merida to wear the bear skin of her deceased, transformed mother. In a way, it's also her way of keeping her close still, having her guidance, as seen when the bear magic pops up to guide her arrows. The fact that the song is so quiet work perfectly, showing how focused and stealthy Merida is as she slays her enemies, only rising in volume during the most intense moments for her.
And dang, seeing the three bear cub heads on her father's armor definitely shows why he had to be taken down. They wouldn't have been a threat yet at such a young age and they could have easily placed them somewhere safe to grow up even if they couldn't transform back.
Merida has finally claimed the freedom and independence she wanted but it's independence gained through the path of walking alone, with all she loved and cared for gone.
Fantastic video and song, the visuals accompanying capturing the mood and setting gloriously.

Evil Merida seems like one of those villains with a tragic origin that you can’t help but love, even through all the awful things she did.
To explain my theory of how this went down, i’d like to take a page out of her unofficial “twisted tales” book where she makes a deal with the Celtic gods of destruction and creation. Especially with the line “no man escapes when progress is made” symbolizing how she tried to change fate in a way that kept her family together; but since nobody listened to her she had to take things into her own hands.
I like to think those same supernatural forces that she was observing and trying to prove herself to now decide to help her get revenge on those who took her mother and baby brothers. Even against her beloved father.
My only thought is what happens next? There is literally a whole story here to be made and I LOVE IT. Great job Lydia and the animator(s) who put this together!!

She has proven she have the strength and will to take them down, while at the same time leaving the clans leaderless and in chaos. As much as they may have reverted back to the old ways, that display may scare them enough to shut it and do as they're told.
Also, she accomplished what Mordu set out to do with his deal with the witch. The difference is that while Mordu was blind in his rage, Merida gained focus... even if in the end they both became monsters.

    @eyes_of_blue_9129 10 месяцев назад +62

Honestly, out of all the princess villian videos I've seen, Merida's story is the one I sympathize with the most. Although I don't think pain is justification for murder, I can understand why losing one parent and then your other parent turning on you (forcing you to do something you made clear you didn't want to do)can drive someone to extreme measures.
Merida was mourning and felt trapped, therefore lashing out.
Maybe she could have just run away instead of murdering the cheiftans, their sons and her father, but that might have resulted in a very bloody war between the clans.
And Merida's hubris is pride of course. Perhaps believing that she could be a better ruler than her father, but because of all the blood that's now on her hands she'll be very hard pressed to earn her people's loyalty and respect. At least without resorting to violence again.
Merida becoming a feared tyrant is very much a possibility here. Because as they say, revenge has a nasty way of turning on you.
This is just my opinion though! Please don't read into it too much!

Just in this universe she's a strict but fair one who starts her journey by killing all who oppose her but as time goes on and her new ways of ruling start catching on, she only kills when necessary but makes sure everyone knows not to test it. I also think she would use her story as both a cautionary tale and a motivator for others. Idk I just think she would be someone who seems cold and uncaring (specially because of her story) but does everything in her power to protect the innocent. Maybe she even starts decorating the castle with bears not as a symbol of death but of safety? Idk just sounds like a cool future for this universe.

    Lyrics
When a cool mist has fallen
And the moonglows sharp and bright
Gentle calls ring from the heavens
Lead me out into the night
    I will rise
    I will fly
Chase the wind and touch the sky
    I will fly
Chase the wind and touch the sky
    Ooh-oh-ooh-oh
I will fight for those before me
    Raise up allies left unseen
I am free to claim my story
    Destroy those that stand between
    I will rise
    I will fly
Chase the wind and touch the sky
    I will fly
Chase the wind and touch the sky
    Ooh-oh-ooh-oh
    Calm valleys lay before me
    Heathers sway and sing
Wait for what the storm brings
    A Shadow in the night
I will whisper, prowl, and strike
And in time you'll see the old made new
as all that suppressed us has died
And to see that day riser
There are prices that have to be paid
No man escapes when progress is MADE
    I will rise
    I will fly
Chase the wind and touch the sky
    I will fly
Chase the wind and touch the sky
    Ooh-oh-ooh-oh
    I’ll touch the sky
    Ooh-oh-ooh-oh
    Touch the sky
    I’ll touch the sky
    (Ooh-oh-ooh-oh..)

Aaaah, villain Merida, I needed this! It's so painful that she wears the skin of her bear mother. But it's terrifying that her dad does the same with his three sons' skins. And the determination in your voice... It totally matches Merida. The fact that she had an exact amount of arrows shocked me...
And the tear in her eye while killing Fergus...
    I love it!

The way the wisps are used, how she's basically channeling the bear curse in a sense to claim the kingdom using violence rather than the og story where she breaks it. The tears when she killed her father - who is wearing the heads of his sons!! Also how he tried to comfort her. The animation is beautiful with each detail.
Then the singing, it fits perfectly, the lyrics and how you sing them with such emotion and some weight, yet still keep it, like, lighter, as if she is in the sky and free, but her trauma is still there and heavy. The animatic and the compositon of the whole track only add to that even more. I've not commented on your other songs - more a lurker -, but you've been improving with each one and I love seeing your vocal range put to the test continuously. Even if the notes are not as crazy as other songs, the ability to hold that wispyness, with a specific accent, and emotion is a great talent. This is definitely in my top three favorites of your works already!
I havent gone through them line by line, but the lyrics are already beautiful from what I did catch.
This is beautiful and I hope you're all proud of this work of art.
Side note: The story makes a lot of sense. You did great showing it at the start in this one, and reading the description just adds more depth.
I'm excited for whoever is next, but until then I'll keep listening to this one gladly 😊

For people saying Fergus didn't know that the bears were Eleanor and the three brothers, I personally think he did know but was forced to kill them. He knew his sons were the three bear cubs and the whole thing takes place after Merida put the tapestry on her Mom.
Remember that in the movie, when they thought the curse wasn't lifted, Eleanor's eyes showed that she became a bear fully. If that curse still didn't lift by then, all four bears would've attacked due to not recognizing anyone. Fergus had no choice but to kill them, as there was no way to bring them back anymore and it was to protect Merida.

Wow another good Disney Princess song twisted into a villain song! This one strikes harder for me than most of the other villainous princess songs b/c Brave is one of the most family-oriented plots in all of Disney. To see Merida turn against all of the things she stands for in the movie just to get the life she wants is absolutely chilling. I do wish I could have caught a glimpse of the witch &/ seen Merida turn into an actual bear but this was phenomenal without that! Fantastic animation, vocals, twist cover song, & original storyline idea!

This was so good, and I was just wondering if Mordu was gonna show up as an ally, Merida seeking him out, seeing as he'd be all for wreaking havoc, I would be surprised (as a headcanon) he was helping her by taking down the surplus of extra guards while she took care of the main powers. Perhaps the deal was, help me, and you'll be free, whatever freedom is that Mordu wanted.

Its basically like all the other princess versions, the worst case scenerio, the one where merida loses both her mother and little brothers but then on top if it she has to kill her own father while the remains of her family watches on this last father daughter moment. Now she is alone, sitting on a throne and trying to change centuries of history all alone, once again. Yep Im crying now…

i love your princess villain covers. I actually have a suggestion for a future one along with a potential backstory
character: kiara ( from the lion king ii)
i personally would imagine love will find a way
backstory: this song takes place after simba banishes kovu and kiara is heartbroken. Furious that her father refused to listen to kovu and now trying to keep her away from the love of her life, kiara goes to find kovu just like in the original movie. Now things take a darker turn. unlike in the original when they find each other kiara doesn’t find him for many days. Everyday she begs her father to forgive kovu still believing he wasn’t responsible for the ambush but simba wont budge. Finally one night she sneaks out to go beyond the pridelands once more to try to find kovu. thats when she finds kovu dead with zira looking up with a psychotic grin. Zira for unknown reasons killed her own son. Enraged kiara straight up kills zira to avenge her beloved. She weeps over kovu then her rage turns towards her father. Had her father not banished him, and maybe even listened to him rather than jump to conclusions, he may still be here. Kiara blames simba for kovu’s death and believes her father is too stuck in the past to rule. Now she is on a revenge quest to overthrow her father and avenge kovu’s premature demise.
