Would like to see them (and other companies) offer this style of mag release on more pistols. Just cause I’m in America doesn’t mean I prefer the thumb button.
Walther made a PPQ 5" called the Classic with paddle mag releases done exclusively through one distributor. I bought mine in black, but they also offer different color barrels. I'm waiting for the new HK concealed carry model to arrive.
Thanks for the review. P22 owner here. Grip is awesome and the trigger stands out more than other hand guns I've tried. But any model they put out that has that type of safety is a no sell . It's the reverse of a 1911 and that's just wrong !
Its hilarious how so many people have no idea who this firearm is for. It doesn't compete with firearms that are double the price or double the capacity. This is basic, reliable, and easy self protection. A store can put this firearm on display right next to some brightly colored talon grips and they won't be able to keep them in stock.
Having frame mounted safety and double stack isnt asking for a miracle, its asking to stay relevant... the grip is thick enough, so why not? Its clear this is just a pk380 facelift, which is pointless.
I guess this is for people that will only buy expensive pistols, and wouldn't ever consider anything made by Ruger. Since Ruger pretty much has you covered if you want a 380 pistol. Personally, I've moved away from 380 and only use 9mm now, but 380 does have it's uses.
Another Excellent vídeo from Sootch, this channel is my favourite gun channel, you do an amazing job, cheers from Brazil. One important message, never let an electoral result take away your rights, constitutional rights must always be put in first place.
I love this I just got a ccp a month or so ago in 380. I find it ideal for me carries really well and if I need to dispatch a critter around the house which is pretty frequently I don’t always have ear protection with me and the 380 doesn’t blow my ears out like my 9mm does
Hammer-fired: ✓ Paddle mag release: ✓ Single stack mag: ✓ No trigger dingus: ✓ Now, if it only came with a metal frame and a 1911-style thumb safety, I'd think they made it specifically for me.
@@Shadow__133 When putting in time at the range, I find it way more pleasant, fun even, to load a single stack mag vs a double stack (even with a maglula loader). When you consider that the average shooting is resolved between 2-4 rounds within 7 yards, having a 15-round capacity doesn't seem so important. If 10 rounds of .380 defensive ammo center of mass don't solve your problem, then you need to get the bigger gun from your truck. But different strokes for different folks. Some people carry six-shot revolvers, and if that's what they're going to train with and be competent at, then more power to them.
@@Sean-kp6pi I also have single stack 1911 that is super cool on the range and a 6 shooter that is cool on a drawer somewhere. But when it comes to self defense and a sub-compact that is EDC dedicated, I see 0️⃣ advantages.
I LOVE MY PDP Compact. This looks like it. I don't think the optics cut really matters that much in a low profile deep cover gun. It just adds bulk and to me this kind of gum is more for the 10 yard gun. It looks like this is aimed at the deep carry space. I also love my P30sk and I get really great accuracy from it. I like hammer fired carry guns because they are less susceptible to limp wristing and you get 2nd strike. I know exactly what they were going for and I think they nailed it. This is more like the LC9S or the Shield EZ or the Bodyguard but smaller and more for sensitive shooters or new shooters. It is designed to be low drag. In my experience all Walthers are well thought out and high quality. I never experienced a Walther I didn't like and the PDP is outstanding.
Don't care what anyone thinks. I really keep thinking about this gun. I like the design and most everything about it. The only thing that keeps me from wanting to buy it is the price. If they get a little cheaper around my area I will purchase one for just home defense. Great video.
This is really just the PK380 gen 2. Not a new model. The new name is just marketing to separate it from the unsuccessful PK380. Walter does this a lot. The PPQ became the PDP. The PPX renamed the Creed.
Thank you for this video Does this model solve the major problems of the PK380? Why did Walther not give it a real decocker? Or, even better considering the public for which it is designed, why didn't they give it a DAO trigger?
Kind of interesting evolution from the PK380. Which was my first ccw sized hangun i bought for carry many years ago. They do make a fine shooting pistol
Paddle release is my favorite control too. My HK 45C has it. I also have a P30SK with that feature and it is ergonomically easier to manipulate than a traditional button control...
Cute firearm and well designed, however I think that most people, (women especially) will not like this pistol, even though it is light on recoil. Light recoil does not compensate for a nearly "10 Pound trigger" OMG thats a deal breaker for most recoil sensitive shooters. I do love the design otherwise. Thnx so much for this great review, as always.!! :)
I had the original model that came out about 10+ years ago or so (don't remember exactly). Really wanted something that had a little more firepower than the M60 jframe I was carrying at the time. There really wasn't any options for Micro 9s at the time so I picked up this gun as soon as it hit the streets. It was soft shooting, light, and accurate, but it just wasn't completely reliable, even with ball ammo. As much as I wanted to like it, I sold it off and went back to my jframe until the Ruger SR9c and later SW Shield came out.
Walther has been making great guns at good prices for decades now and no one seems to care. I have no idea why. Do they just not have a dealer network?
I am a huge fan of Walther products. And i was okay with this model until you pulled the mag out. That is really just unacceptable in 2023. I do love the paddle mag release. I'm glad to see that make a return.
I love the resurgence of larger 380 pistols. Without having handled this firearm, I feel a negative is the manual of arms is not transferable to other firearms. Like scootch states, it’s mostly for inexperienced shooters. I would prefer my wife to have something with a slide stop, standard thumb safety so it translates better as she grows. Got her a Security 380, but the ergos on this PD look much nicer.
Love my Walthers but please consider the Ruger Security 380. Ruger has 15 round capacity. Also the Walther CCP has only one less capacity and is tried and true. Great review.
Why oh why did Walther put a doggone manual safety lever on a PDP?? And what's the deal w/them making a hammer-fired PDP??? I'm a bit of a Walther fan-boy, but they sure are making it difficult for me to REMAIN a fan. Looks like I'll have to stick to my old tried & true G42 🤠
My wife has a very peculiar problem with a gun being "right" for her. She has very small hands. As such, she needs a small gun to be able to hold it and to reach the trigger. HOWEVER, the sub-compact guns are too snappy for her to control. She typically limp wrists it and then gets a failure to feed, very regularly. If she were to use a larger gun it would not be as snappy and she wouldn't limp wrist it, but a gun larger than a sub-compact has a grip too big for her hands (Her longest finger is as long as my pinky) and she cannot reach the trigger. THIS gun may be the happy medium she needs.
Was really hoping for a pocket .380, kind of the saving grace of the cartridge is you can get it in a pocket, imagine like an lcp max but made by Walther? I think it'd be cool
This is an interesting firearm for sure, I was on the Walther subreddit and many users there disliked it a lot and seemed to miss the point. They thought that if it wasn't what they expected it couldn't be for any other market. I think these larger .380 ACP caliber handguns are great for all sorts of people who lack confidence, grip strength or even time to practice diligently to control for recoil. This is meant to compete with the Shield 380 EZ and Security 380. Personally for my first handgun, if I could do it again something like this I would have gotten. Shame that Smith and Wesson didn't make their Shield Plus in .380 ACP but instead 30 SC.
It is meant to be a 380 Shield EZ and Security-380 competitor. The problem is that Walther's marketing team would rather make a James Bond short than accurately advertise what the gun is. This thing is most certainly not built to be a "covert carry" gun like they want to pretend it is.
i eas very interested till i finally got a response that it was hard to rack. For me( thinking of a lady friend and my sister) the point of a tip up barrel was canceled by the difficulty in racking the slide during a malfunction. It would be great if it had an easy to load mag and an easy slide in addition to the tip up.
Its good that theres more options like this out there especially hammer fired. But the Ruger Security 380 still beats this out by all metrics. Nice video.
**They still didn't make it with an adequate magazine capacity for such sized gun. **The Ruger LCP Max is much smaller and has a better magazine capacity. **Walther just keeps missing the boat. Just like on their 22 wimp. **And while I like the lever magazine release that is ambidextrous, there is no ambidextrous slide release. **Wait they did away with a slide release totally? **Not sure I like that idea. **It might be something in the long run that I might actually like but, the fact of the pathetic magazine capacity means I'm not even going to try it.
mag cap wasn't their only goal, and technically it fits right in between the EZ and the Security-380. and honest, studies and stats have shown in an incident a shooter dumps, most of if not All of their mag, at that point, you are just burning money and in the case of an assaulter, the caliber doesn't matter after receiving 2/3/4 shots
@@quinnmclaughlin7537 have you ever watched the video Deadly Effects on RUclips. Put on by people that got an awful lot more experience than you. And sometimes even 10 rounds of a minimum caliber isn't enough against a determined foe. **And if they're on meth, PCP or cocaine/ethylene (would fentanyl also be in that category) or wearing body armor or multiple perps, 10 rounds just ain't going to cut it. **When I went through police training in the 90s the statistics at that time were **1/3 of your opponents will be wearing body armor (and it's much more prevalent now than it was then) **also about the same amount chance of there being multiple perps. **So that means roughly 2/3 of a chance, (if they don't overlap) that you need more firepower than you I think you're going to need. **So if something is close to a full size gun it needs a full size magazine capacity or it isn't worth a sh*t.
@@johnj.baranski6553 actually the statistics I saw said that most of your police officers (the better trained ones) have a hit ratio of about 50% **So that cuts your (magazine) capacity to 5 hits, then add in mitigating factors multiple opponents, body armor, drugs then you're shooting what most people consider a mouse gun caliber. **No thank you! I either want more capacity in the same size gun, or a slightly bigger gun with a more effective cartridge. **And while theoretically you can rapel down the side of a building with 550 cord, I'm not going to do it unless it's absolutely (life or death) necessary. **Wise people prepare for the worst case scenario, **Not the best case scenario. **And while this pistol may be middle of the road, **Which makes them slightly less ignorant than the people that choose to carry no firearm at all. **Not for me!!!
My carry is an LCP Max, and this Walther is very attractive for some of the reasons mentioned. I could live with the lower capacity, but I need full concealability, and the size and weight increase make that difficult - at least for me. YMMV.

Didn’t expect problems from this one? Have you forgotten the PK380 disaster? We got several of those back because they just flat wouldn’t run. Seems like the same mag and operating system which leads me to believe that there will be plenty of problems with the system.
I love the way my PDP Compact shot, I gave up my PDP for a Security-380 this addresses pretty much all the issues I had with the PDP as an EDC. For me it's the grip length, the 10 rd mag with the pinky extension on my Ruger is the lower limit, the 80x grip was too small form me, but the PK380 was ok, so I'm wondering where this falls.... is this just a re-skinned PK ?
I would like to see the rear beaver tail extend farther back. Also rather have a on frame safety instead of the slide safety. The video lists the rest of the short comings fairly well.
Walther went to all this trouble to give the PK380 a total makeover and didn’t give it double stack capacity? Love the other features (big paddle mag release fan!) but…Serious missed opportunity here. I’d rather carry DA/SA pistols but, in this case, I’ll be sticking with my P365 380.

I don’t know what more “frills” you need it did everything a handgun needed to do, and in my opinion more frills means more things to break or go wrong. Now saying that you are entitled to your opinion but as they say, “opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and they all stink.” So to each is own hope you have a better day internet comment troll.
The slide on this one is machined. The slide on the pk380 is metal injection molded. I have a pk380 like it very much.
I own this gun. I really like this gun. I like the ergonomics. Could have a few more rounds, but the overall look, feel, and functions are outstanding
In same size you can find 9mm Luger with more capacity... Some of them in 380 too... You have best options in the market... Nice Video... Thanks!
This gun paired with the 68 grain Underwood Xtreme Defenders is a great option for SD
Would like to see them (and other companies) offer this style of mag release on more pistols. Just cause I’m in America doesn’t mean I prefer the thumb button.
I agree. My favorite gun in terms of mag release is my HK45 with paddle mag release
Agreed! This is the best mag release when mastered.
Walther made a PPQ 5" called the Classic with paddle mag releases done exclusively through one distributor.
I bought mine in black, but they also offer different color barrels.
I'm waiting for the new HK concealed carry model to arrive.
@@thisismagacountry1318 Did you say HK!!! Where When What?? Tell Me! I'm an HK fanboy.....Lol!
@@_JimS
The SFP9CC should arrive soon.
It's a 1.5 stack micro 9mm.
Great review sir ! While you were shooting there was no muzzle flip, it shot very flat. Great gun
That paddle mag release should be an option on all handguns. I love my P22 with the paddle mag release.
Thanks for the review. P22 owner here. Grip is awesome and the trigger stands out more than other hand guns I've tried. But any model they put out that has that type of safety is a no sell . It's the reverse of a 1911 and that's just wrong !
Wish they would have tried something that wasn`t already out there. Like make it a double stack .32 ACP that was sub 1" width and polymer framed.
And frame mounted safety. All This would help them be relevant but nope, just a facelift of the pk380...🤦♂️
I think this could be perfect for my wife . She is left handed and has arthritis issues in hands … Hope you and your family had a great Christmas!!
Walther has had a great history of making great firearms. 100% German Quality.
Definitely digging this. Like to see an extended frame for bigger hands.
It has a removable trigger chassis. How much do you bet, Walther does come out with different size frame/grip modules and higher capacity magazines?
I love my PK380 so I’m anxious to try this one.
I was gonna get the glock 42 but after watching your video, I'm thinking i may but one of these instead. Thanks, Sootch!
😃👍
Very nice, a slight step up from the Ruger security 380
I guess this is for people that will only buy expensive pistols, and wouldn't ever consider anything made by Ruger. Since Ruger pretty much has you covered if you want a 380 pistol. Personally, I've moved away from 380 and only use 9mm now, but 380 does have it's uses.
Another Excellent vídeo from Sootch, this channel is my favourite gun channel, you do an amazing job, cheers from Brazil. One important message, never let an electoral result take away your rights, constitutional rights must always be put in first place.
I love this I just got a ccp a month or so ago in 380. I find it ideal for me carries really well and if I need to dispatch a critter around the house which is pretty frequently I don’t always have ear protection with me and the 380 doesn’t blow my ears out like my 9mm does
Hammer-fired: ✓
Paddle mag release: ✓
Single stack mag: ✓
No trigger dingus: ✓
Now, if it only came with a metal frame and a 1911-style thumb safety, I'd think they made it specifically for me.
Why would you prefer a 9rd single stack?
More adrenaline when facing danger? The thrill of the fight? 😂
@@Shadow__133yeah this guy is on copium. Walther continues to stay irrelevant, cant make what ppl want.
I actually like the paddle mag release. I love Walther products. This might be my next pistol
This is more like the LC9S or the Shield EZ or the Bodyguard but smaller and more for sensitive shooters or
new shooters. It is designed to be low drag.
In my experience all Walthers are well thought out and high quality. I never experienced a Walther I didn't like and the PDP is outstanding.
Never thought I‘d see the day a Guntuber spelled Walther almost correctly. Awesome!
I had reliability issues with my Sig P365-380, might give this one a try
Don't care what anyone thinks. I really keep thinking about this gun. I like the design and most everything about it. The only thing that keeps me from wanting to buy it is the price. If they get a little cheaper around my area I will purchase one for just home defense. Great video.
Weird that they discontinued the pk380 just to release pretty much the same gun
This is really just the PK380 gen 2. Not a new model. The new name is just marketing to separate it from the unsuccessful PK380. Walter does this a lot. The PPQ became the PDP. The PPX renamed the Creed.
@@andrewgee241 gun would actually be pretty awesome if they released it with a higher capacity mag.
It's Walther's MO now. They did it with the PPQ also.
@@andrewgee241 I'm wondering if they are in financial trouble. They haven't innovated in years.
Thank you for this video
Does this model solve the major problems of the PK380?
Why did Walther not give it a real decocker?
Or, even better considering the public for which it is designed, why didn't they give it a DAO trigger?
Kind of interesting evolution from the PK380. Which was my first ccw sized hangun i bought for carry many years ago. They do make a fine shooting pistol
they should have done a 10 +1 to compete with the ruger security 380, the bersa thunder 380, and the sig p365 380.
Walther does everything possible just to stay irrelevant...
Paddle release is my favorite control too. My HK 45C has it. I also have a P30SK with that feature and it is ergonomically easier to manipulate than a traditional button control...
The year of the .380! A new one to add to my radar. Furthermore, I just learned that the Glock 25 is now available to the US market.
Nice pistol. Love the look of walthers. Merry Christmas Sootch.
Great review! Definitely getting one, thanks
The paddle release was always part of the PK380.
Looking for something for my wife to carry. This may be the answer. Another fine vid Sootch. Thanks
Looked at one today. It’s not bad. Would make a nice first gun for someone. Nothing wrong with it but some of the criticism is valid.
This is a great little gun. Absolutely perfect for concealed carry. I just wish I lived in a country that let me own one.....
Just get to Mexico and then walk right over the border to the US. The Gov will give u thousands of dollars, and a place to live….
@@kevinsullivan2362 🤣 sadly you're right ....
New shooters manual decocker. Great idea!
Thanks for the bloopers 😂.
My distributor (Lipseys) had a nice sale on this firearm about a month or so ago. I'm kicking myself in the butt for not buying a bunch.
Walther can thin out the grip and do at least 16 round magazine. Same with CCP M2 - the grip is so thick you can use it for nailing and chopping wood.
I like it! It won't replace my CZ83 or Ruger Security 380, but maybe add to it.
Hmmm. Been wanting a Girsan tip up but this looks nice also.
i eas very interested till i finally got a response that it was hard to rack. For me( thinking of a lady friend and my sister) the point of a tip up barrel was canceled by the difficulty in racking the slide during a malfunction. It would be great if it had an easy to load mag and an easy slide in addition to the tip up.
Typically good products reviewed, but never any disclosure of personal interests: so Sootch videos are ONLY sales pitches. Don't forget.
Now i am absoĺutely salivating. I want one. Thanķs for the AS USUAL AWESOME REVIEW
My next collection pistol. I have a four walther.
This qualifies to be CA compliant! Walther needs more in the CA Compliant Roster other than the P22CA.
Had a great opportunity, missed it. Should have been a stack and a half mag with 15 round capacity. And it should be optics ready.
Nice gun i use sa/da like the Cz P09,P07 Taurus th45acp
Its good that theres more options like this out there especially hammer fired. But the Ruger Security 380 still beats this out by all metrics. Nice video.
👎👎👎 It's good that THERE ARE.....
@@dareisnogod5711 lolololol
So you plan on missing 14 times? Come on man. 10 rounds is plenty if you've practiced. Don't buy into the hype.
**When I went through police training in the 90s the statistics at that time were
**1/3 of your opponents will be wearing body armor (and it's much more prevalent now than it was then)
**also about the same amount chance of there being multiple perps.
**So that means roughly 2/3 of a chance, (if they don't overlap) that you need more firepower than you I think you're going to need.
**So if something is close to a full size gun it needs a full size magazine capacity or it isn't worth a sh*t.
@@johnj.baranski6553 actually the statistics I saw said that most of your police officers (the better trained ones) have a hit ratio of about 50%
**So that cuts your (magazine) capacity to 5 hits, then add in mitigating factors multiple opponents, body armor, drugs then you're shooting what most people consider a mouse gun caliber.
**No thank you! I either want more capacity in the same size gun, or a slightly bigger gun with a more effective cartridge.
**And while theoretically you can rapel down the side of a building with 550 cord, I'm not going to do it unless it's absolutely (life or death) necessary.
**Wise people prepare for the worst case scenario,
**Not the best case scenario.
**And while this pistol may be middle of the road,
**Which makes them slightly less ignorant than the people that choose to carry no firearm at all.
**Not for me!!!
My carry is an LCP Max, and this Walther is very attractive for some of the reasons mentioned. I could live with the lower capacity, but I need full concealability, and the size and weight increase make that difficult - at least for me. YMMV.
I like my Ruger 380 ..kinda small but I have teenage hands my fingers are not fat but when shooting my Ruger 380 I don't like how sharp the bang ..it's so loud and sharp even with ear muffs on its hard on ears
Just ordered a Glock G25 Gen3 .380acp. 4.02" barrel, 15 & 17 rd magazines, no safety lever, front grip strap finger bumps with traction, OD Green, Gen5 trigger. Sorry Walther.
Good review Sootch.
Find a G25 and review it👍
Comparable to the Ruger Security 380.
Thanks
Didn’t expect problems from this one? Have you forgotten the PK380 disaster? We got several of those back because they just flat wouldn’t run. Seems like the same mag and operating system which leads me to believe that there will be plenty of problems with the system.
Excellent Video! 💯
I love the way my PDP Compact shot, I gave up my PDP for a Security-380
this addresses pretty much all the issues I had with the PDP as an EDC.
I have the pk380 great gun
Walther went to all this trouble to give the PK380 a total makeover and didn’t give it double stack capacity? Love the other features (big paddle mag release fan!) but…Serious missed opportunity here. I’d rather carry DA/SA pistols but, in this case, I’ll be sticking with my P365 380.
