thanks for the info, Clark. I know some guitars can't get that low an action without major buzzing even with a proper setup. Both my jp6's can get down to 2.5/32" at the 12th fret without buzzing. I never played a suhr so I don't know if the neck/bridge can be setup properly. btw, so you think the Suhr is more like a C shape neck than the D shape on the JP?
Clark, do you feel like the action on the suhr can be lowered? I dialed in my jp6's action quite low and I'm wondering if suhr can do the same thing. Also what makes you decide the jpxi is the easiest to play? thank you for the video. Very informative.
Even though my favourite guitar is the MM JP6 but I should say that the PRS impressed me.. To me the playability of the JP6 is countless times better neck comfort and frets wise. I own an Ibanez RG series and upgraded my pickups to crunch lab and liquifire because I love the density of the sound it delivers through the liquified and the crunchy sound the crunch lab(bridge position) gives me. Played on the John Petrucci new signature pickups DiMarzio illuminators.. I loved how expressive they were but to me the crunch lab and liquified are preferred. Bottom line, it's all on what kind of music you play, you get the guitar and the pickups you need to deliver the perfect sound. Yes, what head you use and what kind of guitar effect processor(rigs) you use matters too. Pounce again, the PRS impressed me.
Hello, Actually thanks for sharing this. If someone can use the information to make a decision you've helped. I'm actually thinking about the MM. How do you get the money to get all this?
Suhr. Awesome combination of organic and dynamic. The PRS has the most woodsy and warm tone and the jpx is all about precision and really caters more to the high gain/processed sounds. All 3 are kick ass for their own reasons. Nice collection.
Excellent demo! Great playing was fun see the comparison as I am considering a high end guitar in a year or so once my guitar playing skills improve. Want a good tremolo system for dive bombing sounds.
Owning both a PRS custom and a JP6 (PDN model), as well as a Daemoness and have owned some other costly guitars, I have to say that Ernie Ball make the best guitars on the planet.
Yes the quality is top notch in all of these guitars. Actually I've heard some people having problems with their Suhr orders... but the build quality is flawless on all of these. This JPXI was my fifth Music Man guitar... that should tell you something. :D
Yes. Great job. And camera angle (with wide angle) makes all g;ars look fantastic.Maybe Jpx little suffers that, at its pickups are mounted straight to the body, and are quite low. It may affect to the clean tones with single coil modes. I self like JpX;s thin neck...
Good review, to finish.. what is in your opinion the best of the three ?, I think jpx has the best bridge position, has a very round sound, and shur the best clean but in the bridge position is too shrill-sharp.... and Prs has the best balance, not is the best in clean or distorsition, but it sound nice in any position.
Yeah... honestly they are all amazing. The pickups on the JPXI were darker.. could sound better on another amp. Maybe not the best combination to have Orange with JPXI.
I honestly didn't like the Crunch Lab when I had it in my guitar, and based on the description, I don't think I'd dig the Liquifire either, so maybe it was just the pickups that were making the Petrucci not sound as good? :)
I've played a jp6 and agree with your pros and cons of it. I think people are being harsh because you're giving an unbiased and fair showing of all three and they're seeing their dream guitars aren't exactly the perfect things they thought they were. I thought your video was great. Thanks for taking the time to upload it.
Really great comparison. I have planned to buy new guitar and now looking on PRS Custom 24. I'm really like that it has 24 frets with 24.75 scale. It's really awesome for me. Actually I have excited that JPX is too lifeless on clean sound... hmm.
I'm too biased to say anything really. :D For me I'd say PRS is the best. I have an extra pair of PRS pickups which I love since they are so perfectly balanced as you can probably hear. If I put it in any of these other guitars I'd probably like them as much but I also think the PRS shape looks best. I already own two of these PRS guitars and I still want more. :D
Well.. I made a comparison of a standard with those older pickups vs my JPXI on the Petrucci-forum and most of the people didn't hear any difference. BFR has more tight bass but I must say I preferred the older pickups.
I got my black US PRS CE24 for 1000€ and it's the most comfortable guitar I've owned. The neck fits my hand really good. I've done the "buy a cheap guitar and do upgrades until it's good" and it works if there's only one upgrade needed. If you have to change everything then it'll most likely cost almost as much as a second hand good guitar. :) Ofcourse depends on the situation.
I was troubled by my own experiences. I have owned a Carve Top since the 90"s, 2 Custom 24's and 2013 JP6 with roasted maple neck. Sold both PRS, just never found extra level of depth. The Suhr can do it all with many amps, but you have to find your match. Service is AAA awesome. The JP is my new fav. Something about the roasted maple. I think the Music Man JP6 is the deal of the century.
Yeah my XI never sounded good on any orange i have played, though it was without a boost. its sort of hard to create a tight tone and not sound like Petrucci with that thing
@Xi Chen You can set the action as low as you want on all guitars. JP6 has the thinnest neck so it's better for soloing while PRS is best for riffs and Suhr inbetween. that is my taste though. the frets on that suhr are huuuge!!
I can't remember saying that. It just sounded a bit dull in comparison to the brighter pickups in these other guitars although PRS pickups are considered bass heavy. I sold the JPXI because it didn't get played much, which is hard to explain. It was collecting dust and costs way too much for that. Great playability on that guitar but not my choice for other genres besides metal. I want my guitars to have "mojo" and not simply be a race car. You know: Rolls Royce (PRS) vs Dodge Viper (JP).
prs sounded best imo, also i think it's the prettiest of those guitars (i have a thing for white guitars). btw, thanks for some of the best rockerverb tones on YT!
Great video, my friend. I was expecting to see JPXI rock above others, and to be honest, it was the one I liked the less (even knowing it´s an amazing guitar). Overall, the PRS is the best one, as in terms of clean and distortion. Suhr still one a great one, and the best in terms of distortion to me. Take care!
I own a suhr modern custom. Love it. If I had any gripe about the guitar, it's that the cutaway could be bigger & could do with a Tremel-no. It's not the most comfortable guitar i've played at the higher register. Other than that, it's an amazing instrument. Beautiful woods & sound quality. The JP is one of the most playable guitars you can buy, along with the Vigier Excalibur. So for me, the JP just pips the Suhr to the post on playability, but the Suhr wins hands down on looks.
For me : best in clean is suhr, in rock/indie is Cu24 n in Hard-Rock/Metal certainly is JPXI I would be interested to get the same VSs with a Mesa Boogie Amp !
shit son I solo on my PRS custom 24 all the time. You can have your opinion, BUT my opinion is that PRS custom 24's are simply amazing guitars when set up to your satisfaction. I have some custom work put into mine from a local luthier, plays like butter. sounds amazing.
i dont want the slightest possibility of changing something if i don't want to, and i definitely won't limit my playing by paying attention not to touch the buttons. if i want to hit my toggle, i'm not gonna be gentle, especially when it has to be done fast, so a less loose and light switch doesn't make anything more complicated or hard. same with pots, if i want to use them i use them with determination. also, i want some physical feedback so i don't have to look at the controls.
Adjust the pickup polepieces on your musicman JPXI.. I had some issues with my JP6, but fine tunings made all the difference I sold my PRS Custom 24 to finance my JP.. no regret at all.. I dislike the PRS neck shape, and the HFS/vintage bass pickups sounded mediocre to my ears..
Yes, mine was 2006 wide thin. I dislike the radius and med-jumbo fret size. I also cannot get flat action (string angle parallel to fretboard) no matter how I set it up. Upper fret access is better on musicman JP as well. Newer MMJP also comes with stainless steel frets, while PRS only offers nickel which will require refret in the future, which is expensive and will affect resale value.
I played several PRS 408s, new custom24s in the music store. I expected to be blown away but IMO they feel and sound very "average". I think people are only buying the PRS brand name, and those gaudy looking maple top and body contours.
It's all about personal preference. Suhr wasn't for me. In the end the Aldrich pickups sounded harsh even with my Rockerverb which is like the anti-harsh amp of all time. Simply no low end balls. Something just isn't right with the pricing. Suhr looks and feels just like a high end Ibanez guitar. If I'd have to switch pickups... what's left except hype that Suhr should be as good as it gets? Maybe I'm crazy but Suhr vs high end Ibanez, what's the difference?
It's visually distracting since it shows a poor representation of the guitars in question. CU24s I have plenty of, but I'm nowhere near a place that has a Suhr or an EBMM.
If I am going to pay up to 8 grand for a guitar or even 2 grand it best not sound like it is underwater while being played. The PRS tend to have a darker sound and are all mids but the Suhr guitars snap more and have more honk and spankiness to their tonal spectrum. I greatly prefer the Suhr's midrange over the PRS.
I do agree with you, however, some people are light pickers and play gently, which is a much needed trait for some sounds and musical styles. In their argument you cant really go from gentle, to aggressively toggling your tight selector switch and then back to a gentle feel again. It screws shit up. So unfortunately everyone is going to have a different opinion on what is better. However i like everything from tuner keys to tone pots tight and snug, its just a personal thing i guess.
Hey man, I think that the PRS is actually the best one here, although it is very close to the Suhr. The Petrucci is the weakest of the three by far - also the intonation sounds a little off to me. But I could be wrong.
Ah, ok. Well just Google some pics of these to get a more... 2D look at things. :) Truth be told that room isn't big enough for any other lense so that's the reason I have it on most of the time.
All great quality guitars. Suhr has more of that trebly dry crunch tone, JPXI has the richest distortion out of the three.. (intonation sounded off a bit off on that guitar). The PRS has that unique tone... i can recongize that tone from the HFS pickup... Fairly hot but not super heavy... Playability wise, I think the JPXI is the most comfortable out of the three.
Hell no. It felt lifeless TO ME when compared to these other two. I remember feeling like I had to pick harder on it to make it sound right when making this comparison. Anyways it's definately the easiest guitar to play out of these three.
Yeah, me too. I'm all about the PRS. Suhr is a bit bright for my tastes... kind of lacks balls you know. Petrucci sounds mumbly. Clean was dull... distortion was dull... but ofcourse compared to these amazing two guitars. Throw in a cheapo guitar and we wouldn't even care which of these three was best. :)
While tone opinions are completely subjective, I must say that I pretty strongly disagree with the lackluster tone ratings you gave the JPXI... Having said that, in this video they were indeed pretty bad. I have an Orange Rockerverb myself and have played a JP through it and it sounded marvelous both clean and dirty. I just today also played one through a Thunderverb and it sounded great. I don't really like Thunderverbs themselves though lol. Again totally opinion but great video regardless.
Owned 4 x BFR ones and one standard the build quality of all 5 was the same and the standard one with basswood sounded best only sold it cause I couldn't gell with the inverted arm contour
In all honesty the PRS was 5 grand and the Fender MP tele was 450 bucks and sounded WAY better. The Suhr guitars are on a completely different level though. It is like comparing a Kia ( Fender ) to a Cadillac ( Suhr ) I have played for over 20 years now and have played every guitar you can think of and Suhr definitely stands above the rest so far except maybe Tom Anderson which is a close tie. I cannot see PRS as being better than Suhr or even close to as well made and are tonally inferior IMHO.
Suhr's are very clean and bright, their tone really has a expression, like Reb from the band winger. PRS are nice but they seem to sound like every guitar that has distortion, little muddy The JP is ok I guess.
I'll take a set neck Mahogany guitar any day over a bolt on Alder body guitar. Well, I've owned 4 Suhr's and sold them because tonally they weren't what I wanted to hear. They were all bright, lacked bottom. They're made great and play great but not better than a well made PRS, and certainly don't sound better, to me.
Renaissance Man very true comment, I’ve bought, sold, and traded many custom 24s. You can save 50% by buying used. I like the sound of the newer PRS pickups especially the 85/15s.
OMG THAT SUHR NECK PICKUP THO 4:08 compared to 9:36 ew. Too much low end mit dem mahogany son. But seriously different strokes for different folks and applications
Wow you look way younger like 19! Yeah guitars are an addiction one has to be careful. Nice review and playing by the way. I have played these guitars and prefer the neck on the Suhr the best but the PRS and EBMM are nice as well.
thanks for the info, Clark. I know some guitars can't get that low an action without major buzzing even with a proper setup. Both my jp6's can get down to 2.5/32" at the 12th fret without buzzing. I like the JPXI most the tones are amazing IMO. Did you sell it already?
Hi, didnt you play JPXI distorted with jack in piezo socket?
I forgot to ask: what´s the distortion pedal? Thanks.
You going straight into the Orange? I'm pretty sure my Rockerverb doesn't have lots much balls. What were your settings on that?
Hey, What the camera/lens did you use here ? :)
Even though my favourite guitar is the MM JP6 but I should say that the PRS impressed me.. To me the playability of the JP6 is countless times better neck comfort and frets wise. Hello,
Actually thanks for sharing this. If someone can use the information to make a decision you've helped. I'm actually thinking about the MM.
How do you get the money to get all this?
No question for my ears: PRS
Did u forget to switch inputs on the jax when. U played on the distortion channel because it looks that way
How would it be helpful, I'm curious? :D
Suhr. Awesome combination of organic and dynamic. The PRS has the most woodsy and warm tone and the jpx is all about precision and really caters more to the high gain/processed sounds. All 3 are kick ass for their own reasons. Nice collection.
Thanks! Im trying to decide which one of these to buy! Whats your recommendation?
I think PRS is still the best. The newer Custom 24s have pickup selection in a better position even. That's my recommendation.
+John K I've tried Suhr,Not good for me,PRS is the best choice
great man, great playing!Is that a Suhr modern pro?Which one??M1?Thanks a lot!
Excellent demo! Great playing was fun see the comparison as I am considering a high end guitar in a year or so once my guitar playing skills improve. Want a good tremolo system for dive bombing sounds.
Wow!!! That Suhr sounds really awesome, great comparison!
Owning both a PRS custom and a JP6 (PDN model), as well as a Daemoness and have owned some other costly guitars, I have to say that Ernie Ball make the best guitars on the planet.
What pickups were in the Custom 24?
jldkrank Stock HFS/Vintage Bass.
Thanks! That's what I have in my CE 24, but I'm swapping them out for Suhr pickups when they come in the mail! Pretty excited.
ive tried jpx6 on a black star stack amp, it was awesome..specially the clean tones
Yes the quality is top notch in all of these guitars. Actually I've heard some people having problems with their Suhr orders... but the build quality is flawless on all of these. This JPXI was my fifth Music Man guitar... that should tell you something. :D
which has better trem PRS or JP? Thanks
Both are really good. JP has to be the winner though. It's got more control. Both stay in tune perfectly.
Yes. Great job. And camera angle (with wide angle) makes all g;ars look fantastic.Maybe Jpx little suffers that, at its pickups are mounted straight to the body, and are quite low. It may affect to the clean tones with single coil modes. I self like JpX;s thin neck...

I gotta go with the or a. Sweet sounding guitar man.
The other 2 a draw.
Oh and
Some awesome playing there. Keep Jammin bro.
Really great comparison. I have planned to buy new guitar and now looking on PRS Custom 24. I'm really like that it has 24 frets with 24.75 scale. It's really awesome for me.
Actually I have excited that JPX is too lifeless on clean sound... hmm.
Ha... yeah the G-string is a bit off... I didn't actually tune any of these guitars so in that sense it's fair. :D They all stay in tune pretty well.
I'm too biased to say anything really. :D For me I'd say PRS is the best. I have an extra pair of PRS pickups which I love since they are so perfectly balanced as you can probably hear. Agree I played a JP EBMM today and loved how light it was, smooth to play neck and comfy and low end distortion was great. For metal it is perfect.
I've played Suhr's and EBMMs and PRS even Private Stock models and only the Private Stocks really hold their own with Suhr's.
Yeah my XI never sounded good on any orange i have played, though it was without a boost. its sort of hard to create a tight tone and not sound like Petrucci with that thing
So it's about the looks then? Private stock sound should be the same as a regular Custom 24...
@Xi Chen You can set the action as low as you want on all guitars. JP6 has the thinnest neck so it's better for soloing while PRS is best for riffs and Suhr inbetween. that is my taste though. the frets on that suhr are huuuge!!
I've got an Axe-Fx Ultra at the moment. Why did I not use it in this video? Real amps are simply a lot better than any modeler ever will be.
I can't remember saying that. It just sounded a bit dull in comparison to the brighter pickups in these other guitars although PRS pickups are considered bass heavy. I sold the JPXI because it didn't get played much, which is hard to explain. It was collecting dust and costs way too much for that. that being said it's the 7 string, and i believe there is always a little difference between 6 and 7 string pickups.
Take care!
defiantly?
I own a suhr modern custom. Love it. If I had any gripe about the guitar, it's that the cutaway could be bigger & could do with a Tremel-no.
It's not the most comfortable guitar i've played at the higher register. Other than that, it's an amazing instrument. Beautiful woods & sound quality.
The JP is one of the most playable guitars you can buy, along with the Vigier Excalibur.
So for me, the JP just pips the Suhr to the post on playability, but the Suhr wins hands down on looks.
For me : best in clean is suhr, in rock/indie is Cu24 n in Hard-Rock/Metal certainly is JPXI
I would be interested to get the same VSs with a Mesa Boogie Amp !
How is the prs neck?
Narrower, slightly thicker than Suhr. JP is the smallest - this model especially has the thinnest JP neck.
ML Sound Lab because I’m trying to choose between a CE24 (I prefer the bolt on neck sound) and a MM Luke III (I love the neck on those)
Yeah I'd love to try one and I'm sure it'd be better for live situations. :) Don't have ANOTHER 3 kilos for another guitar though. :D
PRS>EBMM JP>Suhr in my opinion based on listening to all three. BUT love playing the EBMM very smooth guitar!
PRS, bro. Always.
bridge pickup too harsh? yeah you probably want to get a tone knob next time on a long scale length guitar with an ebony fretboard...
Why?
shit son I solo on my PRS custom 24 all the time.
I had some issues with my JP6, but fine tunings made all the difference
I sold my PRS Custom 24 to finance my JP.. no regret at all..
Haha... that's just my taste. Some might think the other guitars have thick necks etc. :)
Music man for the win, damnit man they sound so good.
Hey man,
I think that the PRS is actually the best one here, although it is very close to the Suhr. The Petrucci is the weakest of the three by far - also the intonation sounds a little off to me. But I could be wrong.
Haha.. must be fun to switch guitars on a gig between rhythm and lead parts. ;)
It would help if you could ditch that wide angle lens.
PRS won it for me
Playability wise, I think the JPXI is the most comfortable out of the three.
the prs simply dominated...
Suhr for me. The PRS sounds are great but typical sounding to me
My taste: PRS #1 for clean tones, MM #1 for dirty distortion. I'm just not fund of Suhr guitars and gear, I'll stick with the two others.
agree the PRS wins the clean tone contest and JP MM dominates the distortion contest. For metal either is a win win.
Yeah, honestly if you can't sound good with any of these guitars, trust me the gear is not the problem. :)
you playing very good...and yours guitars animals...
Wanna sell that PRS? :D
That's nice. :)
To me, all these “moderns” sound like the Ibanez RG-series.
PRONOUNCED LIKE " sir "
PRS 10.....Suhr 9.....Music Man 8
LOL Clark you should make a demo with the axe
pucha donde se viene a encontrar mara de pedalboards uno jajajajaja el mundo es un pañuelo jajajaa
rockboy360 para que mires que ondas jajajajajaja btw quien sos ? xD
oscar enrique lema medina jajaja akel maje q hace nu metal, space rock y grunge :p
exactly. its entirely subjective, that's why i always wrote from my perspective.
I like the Suhr the best.
Seems you should nix the "cons" section on the JP for the sake of selling it man...lol
PRS sounds best and looks way classier than the other two !
There is no lead tone, it's just clean and dirty.
Hmmm, I think the JP sounded the best in distortion
Canon 550D + Samyang 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye
the lead tone of JP11 is more open than cu24 (8:42 and 12:12)
why are there some many dislikes
I like jp clean sound
While tone opinions are completely subjective, I must say that I pretty strongly disagree with the lackluster tone ratings you gave the JPXI... Having said that, in this video they were indeed pretty bad. I have an Orange Rockerverb myself and have played a JP through it and it sounded marvelous both clean and dirty. I just today also played one through a Thunderverb and it sounded great. I don't really like Thunderverbs themselves though lol. Again totally opinion but great video regardless.
I played a JP MM today through an Orange rockerverb amp and it sounded amazing. Easier and more comfy to play than the other two.
I gotta say, BFR Petruccis sound MUCH better than the standard ones. The issue is basswood doesn't fit those pickups at all.
Owned 4 x BFR ones and one standard the build quality of all 5 was the same and the standard one with basswood sounded best only sold it cause I couldn't gell with the inverted arm contour
Dude are you a pimp to afford over 10k in guitars? Wow must be nice!
PRS for sure
It's not just for piezo.
PRS are nice but they seem to sound like every guitar that has distortion, little muddy
The JP is ok I guess.
PRS 5k>EBMM 3k> Suhr 2k so yeah you pay way more for the PRS customs
buy used these guitars lose over 50% of value in just a short time.
Renaissance Man very true comment, I’ve bought, sold, and traded many custom 24s. You can save 50% by buying used. I like the sound of the newer PRS pickups especially the 85/15s.
JPXI is out of tune!!!!!!!!! Deal with it ..............
OMG THAT SUHR NECK PICKUP THO 4:08
compared to 9:36 ew. Too much low end mit dem mahogany son.
But seriously different strokes for different folks and applications
How does a kid like you afford over 15k in guitars?
Renaissance Man I'm 30. Work = money = guitars. :)
Wow you look way younger like 19! Yeah guitars are an addiction one has to be careful. Nice review and playing by the way. I have played these guitars and prefer the neck on the Suhr the best but the PRS and EBMM are nice as well.
