I don’t like this inox fret tone. It’s the same issue as Suhr and PRS Silver Sky guitars... Fenders are less expensive, easily found second hand and sound better on the vintage side. For modern stuff I’d get a Charvel or an Ibanez or even a “normal” PRS.
@@semiografo something that isn't as well made should be less expensive. A PRS Silversky and a MM Cutlass are absolutely better made instruments in that price range imo. No contest.
@@BrickWilliamsGuitar ok, their build quality are probably great, but the stainless steel frets sound too "modern" to me. I don't know if the Silver Sky uses nickel (perhaps a very hard alloy) or stainless steel, but it doesn't sound like a strat to me. The Musicman Cutlass seems to use the same approach regarding frets. I wouldn't buy a $2200 Fender strat, but I think it's easier to find one second-hand for a more affordable price in the range of an American Professional one. Also, if you're a John Mayer fan, you're better off reaching his tone with a Fender, since it's the guitar he used on his most successful works.

I have the Sterling Cutlass HSS. The carved neck joint is a thing of beauty. The weight is amazing too. It feels closer to a Duo Sonic in weight than a strat.
Just got and played live today for the first time the new Cutlass HSS with roasted maple neck. I love that guitar. I had my mind set on a Fender Elite as on paper it seems great with the 9.5 - 14 radius etc. but I just could not bond with it. Next tried the Eric Johnson strat and it was quite nice - but then I tried the Cutlass and was immediately going places musically I had not gone before. It is the first guitar I have owned that does not seem to fight me in any neck position. I am a utility player and versatility is necessary for me. I did find I had to completely restructure my pedal gain structure to get the sweetness dialed in. Another fantastic feature is the uniformity of volume in all positions. Just an all around great guitar. I have an Elektron analog drive that was kind of noisy but it pairs with the Cutlass beautifully.
Just that active circuit on the music man alone was enough for me to buy one. I LOVE traditional single coils and I cant quite stand stacked ones, but man the noise is just too much at times. Also, the MM with those 60s voiced coils pretty much nails a Jimi or Mayer tone effortlessly.

Cutlass sounds thin and flat where Fender has beefy and rich sound - beautiful for my ears. At the end of the day - the sound is what inspires you... Also flatter neck is what I prefer. Is it possible to change pickups for MM?
Everything about that MM screams quality. The trem, tuners, neck, noise reduction... except the sound. Sounds thin compared to the Fender. Perhaps tweaking the Fractal would take care of that but on the surface tone goes to the Fender.
I disagree. They’re voiced slightly differently, so MM is a bit more mid rangy in normal 1,3,5 positions. Easily adjustable w tone. But the quack positions, esp 4 is way lovelier on the MM.
I'm all in on MusicMan, I own an Axis, and it is a great guitar. I also own a 91' Strat Plus Deluxe that would be a better "head to head" comparison to the Cutlass, as it has Lace Sensors (no hum), a roller nut and Schaller locking tuners. It was pretty obvious in the video what you would choose, seeing as how you have 3 MM's sitting on the stand in the background. This was a no contest between a basic USA Standard Strat Vs. a MusicMan. The one thing I didn't like about the MusicMan was that it started cancelling out sustain that you want to be there. The Lace Sensors don't do that.
that's really interesting about the sustain issue, I agree the pickups could be a bit better in the USA models, I don't have any of the music mans any more sadly, they were all on loan, I prefer the rounded and thicker nature of the fender pickups but I prefer everything else about the MM
I agree, James. I have a '90 Strat Plus Ultra and IMO it's the perfect "Modern Strat" that benefits from lessons learnt over the years but doesn't stray too far from the classic strat. And I wont buy any guitar with a battery in it.
I have one of the early strat plus models from around '88, and agree. I thought the strat pickups sounded better, but other than that (and maybe the neck shape which is just personal preference) it loses in everything else. Why I still have the strat plus. It's a couple of hundred dollars and 2 hours work to make the standard strat the winner here.
To me the Music man's bridge pickup is way too bright for my taste especially on the distortion. i like the more kind of bass sound and thickness of the Fender.
Leo was with Musicman after he sold Fender. Ernie Ball purchased Musicman in the early 70's since then and Leo was no longer with the company. After musicman Leo started G&L.
My opinion: anyyhing with single coils sounds like ass with too much Gain on it. Beautiful sounding 5o a point. That sounded horrible once you put all that gain on it. That is more the neighborhood of 1here you want a humbuckibg guitar. In my opinion strats and teles don't do well as a hard rock or heavy guitar. Undoubtedly the what if crowd is going to step.forward and name what the see as exceptions . That said strats, tele ms and music man and other quality single coils are beautiful guitars. Listen. To Clapton , ronnie Earl even Eric Johnson. But beyond a point you cross a point with gain on these things that just sound horrible.
In a blind test I would have said "one has new strings, the other doesn't" - apparently, the Cutlass being the one with new strings here. In my opinion and for this specific comparison, I think the Cutlass wipes the floor with the Strat. But as always with guitars, it's just so damn subjective and nothing that would really matter in a live mix or production scenario.
How are the neck size differences? I have small hands so a modern C or modern D is is more comfortable to me than like a Gibson thick neck. Also a more fair comparison would be between the Elite/Ultra Strat and Cutlass, not just a standard/pro Strat.
I have smaller hands and I prefer the MM as the nut width is more narrow. The shape of the neck is perfect for me as well (very comfortable). I have over 30 guitars in my fleet and the MM is probably my favorite.
Seems to me the mm has beefier bass but the highs are kind of lost, to my ears at least. The strat sounds cleaner to me, you can separate each note and the sound is a reminisce of classic sounds.
Fender sounds stronger to me Shame about the hum but they do noiseless pickups on the ultra, that’s what you should review next to MM, based on price. Locking tuners too
The new Sterlings are soo good for the price. If your not interested in a "silent curcuit" the CT50 HSS is a great mod platform. Even with all new electronics except the output jack, I'm in it less than half the price of a MusicMan. I actually prefer the chunkier neck they have.
I did just as you said with one I picked up on CL. Put a duncan 59n in the bridge and SSL-1 in the neck and middle. It sounds fantastic and the low output humbucker is an excellent match for the single coils. I already had the pickups so I'm only$200 in.
@@rsaathoff That's how to do it boss. Those are great pickups for classic Strat tones. Evenly matched output and similar voicing. Adding a treble bleed curcuit and a push/pull tone pot to split the humbucker makes them even more versatile. Get a better tone cap and some high quality pots with a more usable taper. The factory 5way switches are horrible. I went with a DiMarzio superswitch to make wiring options literally unlimited. My middle position is wired for neck and bridge instead of middle only. Thing kicks royal ass with a Seymour Duncan TB-14 and two SSL-6's. No twangy stuff for me. I'm after some girth.
Design wise and with all the extras I would go for the Musicman as well, but in the end I would come home with the strat. Simply because it sounds better i.m.o.
Had a standard strat with maple neck for the past 15 years. It's a 2002 cali model. Upgraded texas special pick ups and titanium locking tuners. Thing never goes out of tune. Great guitar. BUT! Recently got a starry night limited edition cutlass. I gotta say... It's better in my honest opinion. Roasted maple neck, 60s style pick ups, it's lighter, neck is easier to slide on and get my fingers around, stainless steel frets are just better and last longer, ebony fret board is so smooth to play on, and it also has locking tuners. Best of all the intonation and bridge are kick ass. Also looks kooler. Cutlass feels like they took the strat and said "how can we make it better?" Perhaps they didn't make "Everything" better and a lot of features are opinion based. Also you can't have everything as there is no perfect guitar so you can't have one thing without sacrificing another thing a lot of the time.... Details aside. At the end of the day I like this cutlass model more though. Mine is all nice and silvery with sparkles which is nice too. Any blemishes, finger prints, scratches or dings are harder to notice on a sparkle body paint nitro finish. Bad things I would argue that are not that big of a deal but are kind of negatives. 9 volt batteries are needed. Kind of annoying to deal with every month or so but not a big expense or problem. This one I have has a ebony neck so you need to treat the wood better which requires more maintenance work but hey... It's worth it since ebony necks are awesome. This model I have has no fret markers on the face of the neck which I found annoying but you can buy lil stickers to put on there and at first I thought I would feel them or they would fall of and it would be cheap and annoying but no... They feel right at home on this thing. The input jack is on the side instead on the face of the body like a fender strat so snagging the chord is more likely. The head stock has 4 tuning pegs on top and 2 on the bottom which is unusual compared to strats that have them simply laid out in a row for ya. reverb.com/p/ernie-ball-music-man-limited-edition-premier-dealer-network-cutlass-starry-night?ended_listing=14949926 No guitar is perfect but I love my starry night cutlass more than any guitar I own and I have some pretty nice ones. That's freaking light weight as heck for such a beastly guitar.
My first electric was a Stratocaster w/Sunburst body (Mexican Made)... LOVED that guitar. But since picking up and playing a Cutlass Sterling by Music Man (think Epiphone is to Gibson) at a local G.C. Fell in love it and don't have plans on going back to a Strat. It's 100 percent true, you have to play it to see and feel the difference. Luckily, Guitar Center has started slowly peppering their stores with these and I got my hands on a one of the few. Hade to Wait nearly 3 months to get mine ordered as I like a a specific color. Add tip: I had an electrical issue with the Cutlass after a year of playing it and the company sent me a new pickup switch and input jack free of charge, which I thought was pretty classy.
I could tell pretty quickly which one you were gonna choose You just seemed to be having alot of fun playing the cutlass It matches your style more, too... it has a more futuristic sound... like it's spaced out or something
I had a Fender American Deluxe FMT for years but just didn't get along with it, the Cutlass was amazing right out of the box! The only thing I would think about changing would be the pickups, purely to add more versatility Thanks for checking it out Jaxon!
Great comparison brother. Two missed spec highlights on the MM: heel joint and SS frets. Why does our beloved Fender insist on keeping the old square heel joint? SS frets have pros and cons. Pro: never wear out, ever. Con: tone is a bit tinny or shrill, but that’s what an EQ is for, so... MM wins 100%.
My Fender American Special with Texas Special pickups is tuned half step down and my Music Man Cutlass is standard...buy both. If I had to choose one though...Music Man, no doubt. I think both hold their value though so..pick one ya like and fall in love. Makes me wonder how a 2016 Music Man like mine will appreciate in value in 50 years or so. The Fender will always retain it's legend, and the required battery for the Cutlass is kind of a negative..even though the noiseless quality sure is nice.
Yesterday I compared the Cutlass and the Fender in a music store. Both sounded well, but the neck of the cutlass was very strange to me, unconfortable. The whole feeling I had regarding playability was weird . The Fender neck was more fluid, enjoyable, the guitar was easier to play in general IMO.
The cutlass sounds like how I thought my strat was going to sound when I got it. I don’t know if that’s good or bad. When I first got my fender I was a little disappointed because I wanted it to be more “quacky” I wanted it to be more twangy and shrill sounding. But in the just over a year that I have owned it it has become my main guitar. So I don’t know how I feel about the cutlass. It sounds exactly like the tone I was expecting when I got my fender, but I have come to love the way my fender sounds even though it wasn’t what I expected. I guess the only solution is to get both.
Hey J Man, the Music Man is old school voiced pickups but this Fender has more modern voiced pickups that could be it? If I get the cutlass again I'll demo it against Fishman Single pickups that'll be really interesting.
Cutlass had a 'dead' sound in the A string, or E . . . and to reduce hum without battery and 'silent circuits,' move guitar away from the amp! In high volume situations, recording, use position 2 and 4.
Lars! You champion, I couldnt work out why I would possibly have though that, I think it's because I was playing the Valentine model that week, I'll add an annotation thank you so much for taking the time to let me know!
Is that a Sub Silo 3 I see behind you ? I think it is. The action is set lower on the MM, slight chirping on the frets. I would have the Cutlass. Worst deal ever when I traded my Silhouette . Miss that guitar. I've had them all over the last 45 years of gigging and that one was part of me. "You don't know what you've got, till it's gone"
patdavidmusic yes but it shows to guitarists that better quality exist for brands like MusicMan, Tom Anderson, Suhr, and even Ibanez AZ this year who sound really really good...!
Wow that's a lot of "zing" on the Cutlass with distortion. I was hyped but now I gotta think twice...would it be difficult swapping pickups on the Cutlass, it has tons of active circuitry inside.
I would definitely try them out first hand, Honestly it's not difficult at all, you just swap out the pickups and pots, Most pickup retailers sell complete sets with pots included, I'd pick up a fisherman fluence active set myself
I think you’re mistaken about the “clean circuit”. It’s the pickups not the circuit. This is evidenced by it also being cleaner when the boost is not engaged. ie, you’re conflating the boost feature w the pickup design

Stratocaster is a live legend but Leo Fender made a better job with Cutlass I have both the Strat stands in the wall and she watches while I play a MM
I realize this video is from July 2018, but you made a comment about the Strat being body heavy and therefore unbalanced, and I would like to hear your thoughts about the weight distribution of the Cutlass. And while we're on the subject, how did the two compare in terms of overall weight? Thanks
The Fender has a softer attack - the tone is less harsh. The music man has a kind of plinky and harsh attack on the notes...maybe the stainless frets? That is what I gathered from the first neck position clean comparison.
Love the noiseless feature on the MM. I do have to agree the distortion was a little brittle sounding versus the Strat which had more bottom. Points aside, why as an intelligent consumer base are we not demanding more that Fender give us a noiseless product off the shelf? This is unacceptable for me as I record and I'm not shelling out extra coin to shield my guitar cavity.
It's mainly to do with Fender being owned by a massive corporation and music man being a family business filled with musicians, fender are now making full named fenders in china, they care far more about profit margins than what the consumer wants
Several Fender Strat models come with their noiseless pickups, which are stacked hum buckers voiced like single coils. That's their approach to the issue. It seems like all of the noiseless single coil approaches have trade offs; you lose the hum and also some of the great single coil tone.
I have a problem with your video, I have a cutlass BFR, top notch guitar for sure, but the comparison you make here is hardly fair, this strat is a very basic strat, they have hum-almost-free pickups these days, as well as locking tuners, and way more modern necks. I still think the cutlass is a better choice (for me), but from the very beggining, your choice was obvious
I get where you’re coming from but for me it was more about, do you want the modern upgrades or do you want the classic fender vibe, Fender have been making noiseless pickups since the 90’s, that wasn’t the point of this video sorry
I have that guitar with the roasted neck, it's a great guitar as are all EBMM. I have an 06 all rosewood axis super sport that will never leave collection but this one may be going. It a fantastic guitar but for me the neck is very narrow and thin front to back especially in the first position. I wish that EBMM would have used the axis super sport neck on the cutlass, that would be the ultimate machine. Fenders are good also, I have a couple american and they are nice guitars. If you are going to drop $2 k on a guitar try to play it before you buy just because the neck is likely to be different than anything else you may have played, it has a slight "V" shape also but it's mild. Smaller hands would probably love this neck shape.Hope this helps.
The tone knob definitely must be used with the Cutlass. Do you think it’s possible to wire the singles in series or would that interfere with the electronic system in there. Looking at a used SSS Cutlass but ain’t sure I want to squeeze the trigger yet.
Seems like your are playing the Cutlass harder, can hear the strings snapping more. Give the truss rod for sure to the Cutlass. Overall tone to the Fender. Many Fender custom shops have reverse wound pickups so there is no buzz. No extra tone wood carved out of the body and no battery box to worry about.
I just bought Cutlass CT 30 and of course I think it's a lot warmer than a fender guitar.. though then again on Musicman Sterling Neck middle it cuts a lot of middle
If I were gigging I would have to go with the cutlas for the silent circuit. I’m aware that there are alternatives for hum canceling but that one seems nice and tidy
Excellent comparison! Thanks for making this review. Does the bridge cover come off on the Cutlass? Or is that permanent and you string it up and change intonation and saddle height etc. with that cover in place? Looks like it would be comfortable when palm muting.
The cutlass' body looks slightly smaller than the stratocaster's body. Is there a worn sonic blue finish for the cutlass? I want a cutlass in a road worn sonic blue finish with a rosewood fretboard. I think I would switch the stock bridge pickup with a Lollar Special S Series bridge pickup. I want the bridge to sound a little more like a P-90.
Music Man guitars are the stuff. The necks are the addictive part. Probably very similar guitars.I can't get past the fact though that I will always want and expect that a strat style guitar is going to sound like a strat. Aurally, it's in our DNA.
Great comparison. Currently interested in the HSS version. I was looking for a video comparison of the neck and well you said it! Maybe I missed somewhere it in the video but what kind of strat are you compared the cutlass to? Just to be sure (looks like an American std to me). I was just wondering if the neck doesn’t feel as “small” as other music men models (like the Luke) but you already answered that. Great video, cheers!
Can’t believe you didn’t mention that the Fender has old fashioned fret wire that will need dressing many times in its life but the Cutlass has Stainless Steel frets that will last many many more years of playing and still will not need dressing. I have a guitar with SS frets and it’s about 14 years old and has been heavily played and gigged but shows no sign of fret damage. I would never buy an expensive guitar that doesn’t have these frets, just ask Tom Anderson he knows a thing or 2 about guitars and all his models come as standard with stainless frets!
Too much sizzle from MM pickups. Or is it the 9 volt circuit? Fender sounds better to my ears. Music Man looks amazing. I'd get the Music Man and gut the electronics.
I recently bought that exact same cutlass color and all! Did you notice that you’re playing on the cutlass was much more fluid? Having personally played and collected fenders for 30 years, a strat being my first ever guitar when I was 13, I can testify hands-down that the Cutlass is in a separate dimension from the strat . Playing it is like being at the command post of some futuristic alien intergalactic space ship 🤣 but seriously since I’ve bought the cutlass I haven’t touched any of my fenders, I’m motivated to play way more often and my playing has advanced way faster. And the cutlass is technically a Leo fender model, it’s just a strat 2.0
hi man : which guitar has the best sustain ?and the pb is always no boost for the neck pickup ! so for the Paf tones, just a single -coil with no sustain in general
hey, I saw your guitar stand and I know what you will choose in the end of the video))) (by the way I personally like the strat in your comparison)) cheers
They were all review guitars, they did not interfere with my decision. If you want the best modern strat that’s nicer to play get a music man, if you want a classic with its flaws but classic sounds get a Fender :)
I love the music man guitar! By the way not sure if you know, but for soloing over the song sunshine of your love by cream and Eric Clapton, what scale would you play around?
I got and old purple early 80s strat I call the joker ps put a spring in for fender tremolo I'll eat that cutlass for tone Japanese there quality is best lol
LoL it was pretty obvious with three MM guitars on the far left of the screen which you’ll pick. I’d pick the cutlass too. I already own 5 MM guitars and likely to buy more soon :)
I’ve owned the cutlass for 7 years and never truly fell in love with it. The pickups aren’t the greatest and it just never vibed with me. It feels to tame. I can pick up a random strat at guitar center and it plays and feels better to me. Also, he’s bs’ing about the tremolo staying in tune. My cutlass goes out of tune all the time, as much as any non locking trem would.
I’ve played maybe 300+ strays in my life including all those back line guitars. Never once have I encountered a body heavy Strat. Does he think the balance point is on the neck? What utter nonsense.
Recently bought a cutlass even tho I said I probably wasn’t gonnna buy single coils but I didn’t know what else to buy. Was opting for a jp157 but it’s too cheap and I already own a mayones 7 string baritone. I got the cutlass and it comes today. I wanna play some prog metal on it 😊 I got a cutlass in black sss style
MM hands down is a better guitar in every way/ Have my 6th MM guitar now on order and its the Cutlass. I have Fenders also, but I dont feel comfortable playing them live. Between the nasty hum and going out of tune all the time, I save them for the studio and truth be known, the only fenders I use is my Jeff Beck model which has noiseless pickups and a custom shop Tele as well as an Elite. Other than that, I use my handmade stratocaster by Mike Detemple and its off the map great.
I'd like to see a comparison between the Cutlass and the PRS John Mayer S type.
PRS Silversky is hard to play due to the radius is 7.25
Cutlass is more alive sounding. Playability of Music Man is always preferred over Fender for me. Easy choice. MM is a clear winner.

What a quest you have had,
Just that active circuit on the music man alone was enough for me to buy one. I LOVE traditional single coils and I cant quite stand stacked ones, but man the noise is just too much at times. Also, the MM with those 60s voiced coils pretty much nails a Jimi or Mayer tone effortlessly.

The Lace Sensors don't do that.
that's really interesting about the sustain issue, I agree the pickups could be a bit better in the USA models,
I don't have any of the music mans any more sadly, they were all on loan, I prefer the rounded and thicker nature of the fender pickups but I prefer everything else about the MM
To me the Music man's bridge pickup is way too bright for my taste especially on the distortion. i like the more kind of bass sound and thickness of the Fender.
lol musicman is made by Leo, they could make a strat if they wanted to
Leo was with Musicman after he sold Fender. Ernie Ball purchased Musicman in the early 70's since then and Leo was no longer with the company. After musicman Leo started G&L.
My opinion: anyyhing with single coils sounds like ass with too much
Gain on it.
@@chuckmottmusic1915 David Gilmour showed me the beauty and diversity of a Strat.
Tai Song the music man has a bit of a very soft “v” shape to it
I have smaller hands and I prefer the MM as the nut width is more narrow.
Fender sounds stronger to me
Shame about the hum but they do noiseless pickups on the ultra, that’s what you should review next to MM, based on price. Locking tuners too
I got a cutlass, baby blue with maple fretboard, love ittt, it's a 2019 model
how does the neck feel compare to fender soft V neck? Thanks
Makes sense the Cutlass would take the best from the Strat and improve upon it; Leo Fender designed both guitars twenty years apart.
Nailed it
That makes sense
Cutlass feels like they took the strat and said "how can we make it better?"
Perhaps they didn't make "Everything" better and a lot of features are opinion based.

No guitar is perfect but I love my starry night cutlass more than any guitar I own and I have some pretty nice ones.

It's all about opinions but educated opinions are the best to follow and that's my take. Perhaps there is a strat model that is better. The 62 strat is a strat I have never played and many consider it to be the best strat ever produced. I did hear they are some of the heavier strats ever made too so that's a bit of a downer. Weight matters lol.
Which brings me to this...

Heard this is a amazing god like creation. Shame it's next to impossible to get your hands on and if you do it's going to cost around 10 grand : (
What made me super interested in it though aside from being amazing all around, is that it's only 4 pounds.
The Cutlass sounds like you're using a more powerful amp. Like doubling the wattage. It also cut through when you were playing with the backing track.
Vince James It does have active pickups which could be the difference that you’re hearing
I could tell pretty quickly which one you were gonna choose
You just seemed to be having alot of fun playing the cutlass
It matches your style more, too... it has a more futuristic sound... like it's spaced out or something
I had a Fender American Deluxe FMT for years but just didn't get along with it, the Cutlass was amazing right out of the box! The only thing I would think about changing would be the pickups, purely to add more versatility
Thanks for checking it out Jaxon!
also, having 3 other music mans behind him is kinda a give away to where his biases are
Matt Gemignani they were just on loan I don’t own any of them
Great comparison brother.
The Fender neck was more fluid, enjoyable, the guitar was easier to play in general IMO.
that's a first I've heard about MM necks. lol
Do it! But be warned you may not touch your fender much if you do
Music Man is a better guitar as it should be considering price. G&Ls are better value for money though and as good as music man.
For clean tones I prefer the music man but with distortion I preferred the fender...mmm was expecting oposite result
Hey J Man, the Music Man is old school voiced pickups but this Fender has more modern voiced pickups that could be it?
If I get the cutlass again I'll demo it against Fishman Single pickups that'll be really interesting.
What exactly is the cutlass model ? And the price??
This is the 2017 Cutlass, my next one will be the roasted maple 2018 version, check out reverb.com
Prices change depending on your country
Thank you Jesus!
Cutlass had a 'dead' sound in the A string, or E . . . and to reduce hum without battery and 'silent circuits,' move guitar away from the amp! In high volume situations, recording, use position 2 and 4.
Nice guitar. I have exactly the same Cutlass. Just one thing ... the neck is not oiled, It is satin lacquered. Only the new Cutlass RS is oiled.
Lars! You champion, I couldnt work out why I would possibly have though that, I think it's because I was playing the Valentine model that week, I'll add an annotation thank you so much for taking the time to let me know!
Great review! Thanks! Definitely like the Cutlass and am just waiting for a backorder to come in.
Stainless steel frets on the cutlass = killer feature!
Of course, thank you for reminding me!
patdavidmusic www.change.org/p/fender-we-want-stainless-steel-frets
Honestly I don't think Fender care, it's just a massive corporation now
patdavidmusic yes but it shows to guitarists that better quality exist for brands like MusicMan, Tom Anderson, Suhr, and even Ibanez AZ this year who sound really really good...!
Wow that's a lot of "zing" on the Cutlass with distortion. I was hyped but now I gotta think twice...would it be difficult swapping pickups on the Cutlass, it has tons of active circuitry inside.
I would definitely try them out first hand,
Honestly it's not difficult at all, you just swap out the pickups and pots,
Most pickup retailers sell complete sets with pots included,
I'd pick up a fisherman fluence active set myself
I heard that, too. The Cutlass sounded a bit buzzy. No hum from pickups, but buzzes from frets.
Neck dive refers to the headstock end diving,,, as in down. What dives up?
Fender does have noiseless PUPs, and comes on Ultra and Ultra Lux models. Fender also has stainless steel frets as of 2021.
Since my last comment I bought a Humbuster cable by Fractal. Highly recommended as it doesn't tone drain but quiets the hum.
I get where you’re coming from but for me it was more about, do you want the modern upgrades or do you want the classic fender vibe,
Fender have been making noiseless pickups since the 90’s, that wasn’t the point of this video sorry
Thanks. I was afraid i might have made a hasty purchase because i always loved fenders but this guitar was on sale so I HAD to pick it up
Looks like a silhouette special on the stand in the background. How does it compare to the Cutlass?
I like the Cutlass and I’m considering it but a fairer comparison would have been to compare it against an American Ultra strat.
My goldfish brain cannot wrap my head around how that musicman trem can stay in tune so well.
Cutlass’ shape has more curvier, askew shape it seems, kind of annoyed it doesn’t have the body contour for your arm.
If I were gigging I would have to go with the cutlas for the silent circuit. I’m aware that there are alternatives for hum canceling but that one seems nice and tidy
Not a 1 piece neck.
How about tearing a cutlass tremolo system down so we can SEE how it's better?
you talked about the trem staying in tune and mentioned the body(?) but didn't explain that the locking tuners are there for that very reason.
Must have forgotten sorry buddy
@@patdavidmusic Yeah - great review - just wanted to make sure people understand how locking tuners can help a trem.
Excellent comparison! Thanks for making this review. Does the bridge cover come off on the Cutlass? Or is that permanent and you string it up and change intonation and saddle height etc. with that cover in place? Looks like it would be comfortable when palm muting.
Unsure if you can take it off I’m sure there’s a way I just haven’t needed to,
You don’t need to take it off to adjust intonation
The cover comes off, I took mine off. Thinking of putting it back on after 3 years 😊
The cutlass' body looks slightly smaller than the stratocaster's body.
Do you hear a hum when you touch the strings on the MM? Mine has been doing it on position 5 and 3.
harlequin75 It isn’t grounded properly.
I love the cutlass....but I changed the pickups with Kloppmann
Music Man guitars are the stuff. The necks are the addictive part. Probably very similar guitars.I can't get past the fact though that I will always want and expect that a strat style guitar is going to sound like a strat. Aurally, it's in our DNA.
Ps Action on the cutless is too low Sounds buzzy
So i know the cutless has locking tuners. How about that strat?
Great comparison. Currently interested in the HSS version. I was looking for a video comparison of the neck and well you said it! Maybe I missed somewhere it in the video but what kind of strat are you compared the cutlass to? Just to be sure (looks like an American std to me). I was just wondering if the neck doesn’t feel as “small” as other music men models (like the Luke) but you already answered that. Great video, cheers!
The neck is certainly different but not small, it’s an American standard, good luck!
I have a sterling cutlass.....I put some fishman fluence single coils in it......one of my favorite guitars and it's not even an EBMM
I would of put a G&L up there too.
Definitely if I had one, I’d love to throw in a prs. silver sky as well
Can’t believe you didn’t mention that the Fender has old fashioned fret wire that will need dressing many times in its life but the Cutlass has Stainless Steel frets that will last many many more years of playing and still will not need dressing.
Cutlass is little bit twanky✨✨
Too much sizzle from MM pickups. Or is it the 9 volt circuit? Fender sounds better to my ears. Music Man looks amazing. I'd get the Music Man and gut the electronics.
Scott Boswell thought the same thing
Wonderful comparison 👏👌
Can you state the price of the blue Cutlas that you are playing ?
Wondering if I can afford it.😊
Is it the Cutlas 50 ?
100% agree buddy such a killer guitar, grats on yours!
patdavidmusic 🤙🏽
Just got a Cutlass! It's a fantastic guitar
hi man : which guitar has the best sustain ?and the pb is always no boost for the neck pickup ! so for the Paf tones, just a single -coil with no sustain in general
How does the narrower nut on the Musicman affect fingerpicking and hybrid picking?
hey, I saw your guitar stand and I know what you will choose in the end of the video))) (by the way I personally like the strat in your comparison)) cheers
They were all review guitars, they did not interfere with my decision. If you want the best modern strat that’s nicer to play get a music man, if you want a classic with its flaws but classic sounds get a Fender :)
@@patdavidmusic MMs are great guitars), 100%! Thanx for vid!
How would you compare it to the Silver Sky, PRS?
Haven’t played one of those sorry
patdavidmusic can’t find anyone on RUclips who has.
Thanks
I really wanted to like the MM but I prefere the sound of the Fender. Its more familiar :/ Need to test them first hand
Andy Goldman from Nonpoint used to play Musicman.
Is the Cutlass smaller?
Pretty much the same size
Is the cutlass tremolo routed for pull ups?
No just down, but you can make it floating
I love the music man guitar! By the way not sure if you know, but for soloing over the song sunshine of your love by cream and Eric Clapton, what scale would you play around?
Sorry about the late reply!!
I believe d minor penatonic or d major pentatonic or d blues would all sound brilliant
You should try the Sterling Cutlass CT50, this would be budget performance version of the Ernie Ball
What are typical retail store prices for each?
Music man is a better guitar, playability, sound, quality wise for sure. But I prefer Strat's design any day.
Was that an American standard strat
I got and old purple early 80s strat I call the joker ps put a spring in for fender tremolo I'll eat that cutlass for tone Japanese there quality is best lol
How did you like it compared to the silo in the background
a massive upgrade
The stainless steel frets is definitely affecting the Cutlass' tone
definitely a little bit, but mostly durability
LoL it was pretty obvious with three MM guitars on the far left of the screen which you’ll pick. I’d pick the cutlass too. I already own 5 MM guitars and likely to buy more soon :)
I’ve owned the cutlass for 7 years and never truly fell in love with it. The pickups aren’t the greatest and it just never vibed with me. It feels to tame. I can pick up a random strat at guitar center and it plays and feels better to me. Also, he’s bs’ing about the tremolo staying in tune. My cutlass goes out of tune all the time, as much as any non locking trem would.
hey pat can you make a video on how to do some marylin manson? or if you have can you link me to the vid?
I don't know how I missed this comment! I'll add it to the list!
What’s your amp?
Fractal AX8
I’ve played maybe 300+ strays in my life including all those back line guitars. Never once have I encountered a body heavy Strat. Does he think the balance point is on the neck?
What utter nonsense.
I own both.
what’s the song at 3:30
Recently bought a cutlass even tho I said I probably wasn’t gonnna buy single coils but I didn’t know what else to buy. Was opting for a jp157 but it’s too cheap and I already own a mayones 7 string baritone. I got the cutlass and it comes today. I wanna play some prog metal on it 😊 I got a cutlass in black sss style
Fender why, cause all of the world love this sound. thx
Not magic just single coils, Fender doesn’t own the single coil market nor control it
Cutless more glassy tone. I like it.
I just got mine cutlass, it's amazing plays very well super. Except the price it's very lol 😂
