Not sure if this is common knowledge but the engine installed in the AC6000s was designed and developed by Deutz MWM in Mannheim, Germany and licenced to GE. The engine was designed to produce 6250 HP @1180 RPM. This is consided quite a high speed for an engine of this size. I was fortunate enough to be involved with the development of this engine and spent a lot of time in Germany in 1995. I later followed the prototype engine to GE in Erie and worked on the development of the engine in the locomotive.
Thanks for uploading this video, brought back some fond memories.
    Take care.

Man, had I known that these were living in their final months of service, I would've made more of an effort to get these beasts. Nice compilation video of one of the greatest fleet of GEs to roam the rails.

Great video of the AC6000CW's in action! I forgot just how many of these CSX rostered. Ironically, I've seen more of these locos on NS trains (5 of them) then I ever did on CSX (0 of them). Thanks for sharing.

At least a couple of these guys should be in a railroad museum, unfortunately there is no SD90H saved anywhere. Both of these are iconic representitives from an exciting era of horsepower wars. The sad thing is both GE and GM/EMD are no longer even building locomtives.

I wonder how many of those AC6000CWs are actually 6000HP. Those engines were quite problematic, and many ended up downgraded to lower-horsepower engines.

I don't mean to be this guy but CSX isn't scrapping AC6000CW's. They've just rebuilt a large chunk of them, so they wouldn't have any reason to. They've actually stored all but one of their SD70ACe's, so if anything, you should be a lot more worried about those.

All of the Big 6's were re-powered with 4,600 hp 16 cyl GEVO-16 engines and reclassified as CW46AC's, or AH's. That was just before they were sold to Progress Rail (PRLX).

being down rated too t CW46AC's 4600 hp with the same ter 4 prime movers as the AH. number classes 5000 are 4400 hp-ah, while 600 class is a 4600 hp except one is 4000 hp and is now a CW44-AC. there dynamic brakes are second to none. they will keep that at full power. ps they still rain oil on the cat walk from the twin turbo stacks.

As of January 2019, only 3 locos, CSX 600-602, remain on the roster. Norfolk Southern still has about 40 of them on lease from PRLX, with that number on a steady decline as the leases expire.

Why are they more outdated than Dash-9 and 8's? Maybe they didn't run as good as the other GE's

  • @MrMercurybullet

Shit locos that's why they are being retired.
BHP got rid of theirs years ago due to constant failures of the prime movers. Replaced them with ACe's.

Hey moron, get out of the past, it is a new ballgame! SD90 macs are gone as well, except for the frames. If GE is so bad, why do they have 70% of the new locomotive market? Get over the fact that your SD40's are disappearing!

mercurybullet--ok bud, no use arguing with a wall. So you are an Aussie that worked on them, good for you! But you failed to note that the units were in service from 1999 to 2014. All eight engines replaced the 4000 hp units BHP Billington used before. Also the eight engines set a world record that still stands today of 98,000 tons. The train was 4.5 miles long with 682 cars and traveled a distance of 171 miles. The whole point being that both EMD and GE's 6000 hp units did not perform well until they replaced motors with 4000 or 4400 hp engines. BHP called them very successful units, but I guess you know more than they do. If they had ordered SD90MAC's, you probably would have said the same. Regards to you from the USA and I hope you have better success with the SD70ACE's!
