I was working for CSX when these were first delivered. I remember running them when the smell of paint was strong you needed to keep the windows open. They were absolutely fantastic locomotives. I used to get pairs of them on Intermodal trains from North Jersey down to Philadelphia and Baltimore. Never had to use air, just the dynamics and they would get up GO. 10 years later i would get them on run through power sometimes in sets of 4 on mixed freight and i had to isolate some because i had too much power online. By far my favorite GE i ever ran.
2:25 you can hear her for miles. AC6000s were loud, here’s a story time. I was at my mamaws house, she lives about 100 foot or more (can’t calculate) away from train tracks. There was a coal train inbound with a AC6000CW in the lead. Little did i know this locomotive was SUPER loud. And when it come by I was on the porch waiting on it. Here it come strolling by and the engine was so loud it caused me to scramble back inside, needless to say it was still fun to watch.
I honestly shouldn’t have watched this, these big brutes were breathtaking to watch in action, especially when they were working hard, and god do I miss them so... We had one on the point of a hotshot northbound coming through Elm City here in North Carolina with just him and I believe a standard cab dash 8. I forget how many axels the DD said it was but it was 250 plus easily, and man was he pulling hard. Engine roaring in full run 8, traction motors screaming, we heard him at least a good three to four minutes before we saw him. You could barely hear the horn when he got to the crossings in town and you most certainly could not hear that dash 8 that was tucked in behind him lol. Thought he was gonna rattle every damn teeth I have out of my gums 😂. Ah man, those were the good ol days, shame they didn’t keep em around but that’s progress for ya I suppose 🤷🏻♂️. Cheers for the awesome video compilation of the best engines CSX ever ran
Yeah it was sad to see these things go. I remember seeing a plethora of these things on Q171, Q173, Juice, and many more trains back in the day smh. Thanks!!!!
What is the real reason CSX retired these...UP has kept a few and are still roaming, not sure if they are rebuilt them to Tier 4 standards. I miss these beasts! Nice Tribute to the mighty GE AC 6000 CW.
I am surprised that CSX has gotten rid of their ac6000s instead of rebuilding them like Union Pacific is currently rebuilding their ac6000s. I sure do this the times when both NS and CSX had all the good locomotives compared to today meaning all you pretty much see are the boring GEVOs.
They could’ve rebuilt them like the AC4460CW’s in UP’s roster. But they didn’t, for some reason. The old 6,000HP Prime Mover they had was troublesome, and it was known to destroy the Traction motors, on a weekly basis of running which required a lot of repairs, and refits for the T.M.’s. Yes, It would’ve been awesome to see them on the CSX line still, I only caught one Rebuild. But they where beasts, and with great power such at those always come at a odd price!
Their is no reason to rebuild them. A current ET44 is more powerful than the AC6000s were anyhow. Why rebuild old locomotives when the brand new ones are more powerful than more reliable and meet all the current emission standards? AC6000’s had 188,000 lbf starting tractive effort and 166,000 lbf continuous tractive effort. An ET44AC has 200,000 lbf starting and 166,000 lbf continuous.
The main thing I definitely love about these locomotives are the K5LA’s mainly the older ones I still like the one at 2:23 NS 4334 has that same horn I don’t know what it actually is because I definitely doesn’t sound like a 3rd gen K5LA
While CSX has gotten rid of them, PRLX has acquired them, and now Union Pacific is leasing them because of a horrific power shortage. They're not done yet!
man i miss these units so much their disappearance is one of the main reason i largely abandoned railfanning all those lame tier 4 leaders and gevo crap is so lame it puts me to sleep
I think CSX got tired of these engine's breaking down so they sold them to PRLX due to power shortage of engine's that are short so now those ET44AH's are in their place, absence and their wake.
Well now there are rumors that they are being reactivated, I got a friend down in Waycross who saw 600 and 601 on the fuel tracks which somewhat confirms that its true, he didn't get a photo, but next time he goes he will

2:28 This is probably the coolest video of a train I’ve ever seen.
WNY&P recently bought several ex CSX AC6000s

250 axles is nothing compared to my biggest train of 1140 axles

It is a 3rd Gen
@@epiccsx Technically it’s a raised letter K5LA.
@@TheAustinSubRailfan Same thing as 3rd Gen
@@epiccsx Yea in a way.

but the horsepower was derated to 4400

I miss them too.
Will we ever get to see one up close?where it is standing still?
those shadow side shots tho

Too bad so much horn . Wanted to hear that engine sound!
Really nice but are they going to bring back the AC6000CW?
I'd doubt it, current CSX only has 3 AC6000s in storage and I don't even know if those will run again or just rust away
Well now there are rumors that they are being reactivated, I got a friend down in Waycross who saw 600 and 601 on the fuel tracks which somewhat confirms that its true, he didn't get a photo, but next time he goes he will
Bring em back
