At first the cheats weren't working, so I did what anyone else who grew up with old school electronics would do, kept turning the cheats on/off, re-saving cores, and rebooting the damn thing lol it finally worked! Thank you!

Hello! Great video! I did this and was adding codes to a game (Shin Megami Tensei 1). Now the game won't load at all, but other games do. That was the only game that I tried applying codes to, any ideas what I did wrong or how to fix? I just get a black screen when I select SMT 1.

The overrides menu should be in the top-most menu outside of cheats. I can't imagine a situation that would stop it from appearing...

This is super helpful because I'm playing Summon Night Swordcraft story and I'm about to lose my damn mind. I've sucked into almost 14hrs into a damn gba game and that to me is wild. Thanks for the video! Majority of the time after I toggle which cheats I want then resume game it crashes. Is there a better way to start playing after I choose my cheats?
You can enable your cheats, then save game overrides, then restart the content. That might work!

@@HumanInstrumentalityProject you can easily find .cht files online, or even websites where you can select all the cheats u want, then make it into a .cht file! if ya really want to make your own files from scratch you will probably need a tool, like Retroarch Cheat Creator or similar, there you can add gameshark/game genie codes and the program will convert it to the correct layout needed for retroarch .cht files
Hi, Can someone help me out? I did everything in the video, but when I go into cheats from the quick menu on garlic OS nothing shows up. From the SD card I can see the files, but when in the games the cheat files aren't showing up.
im guessing the console names are incorrect, the downloaded folder from that database uses console names, while the cheats folder uses emulator names i just realized!
The SNES cheats (Super Star Wars) are not working. The cheats show up, I can toggle them, but as soon as I restart the core, they're gone. I did delete all saves and states bot nothing helped. I've got the feeling it fails at the moments the cheats are applied to the core (in that case 'resume' doesn't work but the game crashes).
Honestly its tough to troubleshoot the cheats. Could be a wrong ROM, wrong region, wrong version etc. You just have to experiment. Many aren't reliable.

for mac users specifically. (I don't see the hidden file...) I tried checking on google and reddit but can't find the answer. I tried shift + command + . (period) but doesnt work either. I tried the "view options" but doesnt have hidden folders..
Omg shift + command + . actually revealed them for me! I'm sorry it didn't work for you, but I'm thankful for your comment (also on Mac). I was completely clicked into the folder alone before I tried the command. I also clicked just below the folders in the window to ensure I only had that window selected.

How do I add custom cheats for a game that isn't already present?
just place the .cht files you find online, into the cheats folder. You can create your own cht files but its kinda tricky, in that case i would recommend some tool like retroarch cheat creator

No idea. You'll have to find cheats specifically for that purpose. This guide isn't for specifics, it's for how to apply cheats in general.

You'll just need to find a different cheat that's supported.

Does it make a difference if it is a ROM in German or English (for example)?
The ROM must match the game that the cht file expects exactly. I'm not sure whether different languages specifically matter
it depends on the code that has to be altered by the cheat, these cheats do for example change a specific byte on code line 740.... so if the code is different because of the language change, a wrong line of code will be altered!
so in alot of cases if you use wrong language, cheats will crash the game or behave unexpected or do nothing

It works, but my harvest moon diary save error now I lost my saving and when I try to start new game the cheat doesn't work and crushed my game.
Yeah these old cheat systems are always risky. I remember breaking a disk 3 FF7 save on the original PS1 back in the day trying to get Sephiroth in the party permanently!

Did you save the overrides for game/core/content directory? If so, disable trh cheats then save the override again to make sure it sticks

There are so many factors that come into play with cheats. Compatible ROM, region, filenames, cht files, etc. Really you just need to experiment until you find something that works.

You need to enable hidden files and folders in your file browser!

I've heard lots of people having trouble with Pokemon. You might want to try a different ROM, region, etc.

I cant find the cheat in the menu section after updating to Onion OS 4.2 beta. Can anyone help please?
I just figured this out. Here's the steps:
1. On Onion OS, go to Apps and select RetroArch
2. Select "Settings"
3. Select "Menu Item Visibility"
4. Select "Quick Menu"
5. Scroll down and enable "Show 'Cheats'"
6. Press B four times so that you're on the Main Menu
7. Select "Configuration File"
8. Select "Save Current Configuration"
9. Press B to return to the main menu and select Quit RetroArch
Now, the cheats menu will show in-game :)

Honestly it's tough with cheats because there are so many variables, like making sure the rom you have is compatible with the cheats, region etc.

Can you also add your own game codes? Besides the ones that are only on the "code" sheet
Any .cht file should work. You can male your own but (as I discovered) it is very, very complicated to do so.

Really annoying me. All the CHT's I put in say "Unsupported" and I have tried them all. Seems like there should be at least one supported pokemon CHT file but I cannot find it. I admit, I am probably being stupid and I do not expect help with such limited information I am just bitching. >.
Your snes list is truncated to 1000 files, so basically the cheats stop at H and can't access the rest of the directory.
The list is full when you download the zip file. If you tried to view from the website only, then it stops at H.
