  • TOPIC-VULVA DEVELOPMENT IN C. elegans (PART-2) || CSIR NET|| DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY | IMPORTANT
    Most of the C. elegans are hermaphrodite- they have both male and female sex organ.Hermaphrodite can be viewed most simply as a female that produces a limited number of sperms , so she can reproduce either by self fertilization by using her own sperm , or by cross fertilization after the transfer of male sperm by mating.
    The vulva is a part of female sex organ that consist of 22 cells and serves as a structure through which the sperm enter and fertilized eggs leaves the gonads.Vulva development in C. elegan involves a network of intercellular signaling, signal transduction and transcriptional regulation.Vulva present at mid ventrally.
    Vulva present at mid ventrally.First vulva precursor cells (VPCs) are born. These VPCs are hypodermal cells(epidermis) ( P3.p to P8.p)
    This 6 VPCs have equal potential to form vulva. This 6 VPCs influenced by anchor cells form an equivalence group.Anchor cells secrets the lin-3 proteins(which is similar to epidermal growth factor).VPCs which receive higher lin-3, will become primary (1°) VPCs (central vulval cells).P6.p cell is closest to anchor cells and received high concentration of Lin-3 protein(1°VPC).
    The cells (P7.p and P5.p) beside the central cells (P6.p ) received less amount of lin-3, so they developed into secondary (2°) VPCs (lateral vulval cells).VPCs have Surface receptor (Let-23) to receive lin-3 (protein which is acting as a ligand for Let-23 receptor)
    Primary and secondary VPCs will lead to the formation of Vulva where as rest of VPCs(P3, P4,P8) will going to form hypodermal(epidermal )cells as they don’t received lin-3 and known as 3° cells.

    So how it could be possible that... only P6.p have a receptor for that LIN3

    But ma'am in option B if there is loss of function in lin-3 how will let-23 "create" vulva on its own. I mean doesn't it require lin-3 to make vulva? And if it is mutated shouldn't be there no vulva formation at all?

  • @ELSIRANI
    @ELSIRANI 4 года назад

    Hi. Can anybody kindly clarify this doubt....in one of the previous year CSIR Net papers, it is given that reduced function of LIN3 results in P6p adopting Primary fate while the other VPCs become tertiary.
    Whereas in Gilbert, it's given that low LIN3 OR Low LET 23 will result in no formation of Primary VPCs. Which among the two is right? What will happen when there's lesser concentration of LIN3 produced?
