Aix was the first Gorgan and the one I find to be the most interesting. It was a goat with both genders that was slain by Zeus during the battle against the Titans. Zeus places its head on his shield predating Athena’s actions with Medusa’s head.

What's the mythic answer? I don't know. But the historical answer is probably the story arose to explain the symbol of the Gorgon's head. You see, the image of a Gorgon head was used as a protective symbol by the Ancient Greeks. Basically it was believed that evil spirits would look at the head and flee. So the beheading of Medusa probably gives a partial explanation for the symbol since the symbol is just a head

Gorgons never had snake tails until 1981 Clash of the Titans. Since then it's been a common feature within the 2010 remake and God of War games. Before then, they had legs 🦵.
I've always thought Medusa's sisters were born as gorgans but she was immune to their gaze, and only until her atk by Poseidon was she made just like them.

@@rafaelsantos-nl9jdThere’s also some accounts where Echidna is the daughter of Chrysaor and Callirrhoe. So in this case she’s Medusa’s granddaughter. So, I’ve heard a version of this that the girl actually asked Athena to protect her from being violated again, so Athena made her a gorgon so she could never be violated again. Becoming a gorgon was her empowerment, not her punishment. The same source said a gorgon’s head was used to mark safe places for women. The version described in the video is the ‘men’s’ version of the tale.

2- is not really a problems, you have some second generation titans that worked for the olympians, Prometheus and his brother for example created the humans and animals while working for the olympians if memory dont fail me.
3-Medusa never served Athena in the original vesion fo the Tale, you can even say they are rivals or enemies, she only serve Athena in the Roman version, that probable changed Medusa from a powerful and deadly woman to a weak defenseles priest, to make both Poseidon and Athena look even worst than they are in the OG
