    Hi, I just want to stop by and say thank you. Years ago, and I mean quite a few! I found this channel. The first art channel I ever subscribed to. I was simply just a young teen and now i’m 20. You guys have completely inspired me over the years and have helped me so much ! I haven’t been very active regarding my art lately, but maybe that will change. I still just want to say thank you.

    i actually love using these paints! since they're pretty cheap i don't feel bad using them up for silly sketches. i've had mine for quite a while and they do dry up but if you add water and let them soak it in you can mix them up again and they are like new!
    i do prefer my fancier more expensive brands but these are very fun for just playing around. (i did also rearrange the colors when i got them in because the set up was wack haha)

      Oh same, its definitivly not the best paint iv used but there is alot of it so im not scared of using it, it usually gets used in my scetchbook! the most anoying thing is that it dries out if you dont seal it properly but as you said you can reactivate it.

      @@Pop_Trauma Yes they do dry out after a while. Mine only mostly dried on the top, after like 3-5 months? You can spray them with a bit of water after each use and use some cling wrap to help keep the paints went. Alternatively you can let them dry out and then sprit some water on them where you want to use them. It’s easier to travel with this paints when they are dry. Then just spray them with water before use. If you tilt the paints, depending on the consistency it can drip to the lid. I haven’t had any leakage to the outside tho, the container is very nice.

    So, I bought the next size down of this set for myself a few weeks back. A few things I’ve figured out since using them:
    1. When they dry out, adding water, scraping the sides, and using a handheld mini paint mixer or palette knife brings them back to life pretty quick. I use a spritzer bottle when they start to dry when painting outside.
    2. I found using a palette knife to put the colors on the palette keeps the cups of paint really clean. (Since it’s easier to clean the palette knife than brushes)
    3. It’s a bit heavy, but I liked this set because it’s so easy to bust out to go painting outside. It’s just one less thing to prep and set up and one less excuse for me to avoid going out to paint. I haven’t had issues with the paint spilling out- but I keep mine a bit jelly consistency rather than liquid-y.
    4. I agree these are definitely student grade, but the price is good and if you’re just trying to get in more practice in, I always feel less pressure and guilt if I should mess up or that days painting doesn’t go well (as opposed to using hoelbein or Winsor & Newton which i reserve for projects I want to sell or can take my time working on indoors)
    5. When I finish using the paints, hey- free container! Just fill in with paints from another brand! (The refills are not really available)

    If anyone's looking for a travel gouache kit, I highly recommend CaranD'ache's pan gouache kit if you can get them for a good price. I managed to get mine for 50% off and, as someone who has to travel a lot, it being in pans make it extremely useful to paint on the go!

      @@11c65 sorry I’m a year late but I just got the caran d’ache red travel palette and it’s definitely not chalky at all. So creamy with the right amount of water, isn’t streaky, and colors mix beautify. Only cons are: white isn’t as opaque but it’s a good mixing white like zinc white, the palette is huge (can be good since pans are large), and I didn’t like the magenta color would have preferred a quin rose color instead

    a new episode of Grieving with Gouache. Best review I have seen on these paints... I think the main selling point of these are that they are just so cute! I would recommend the Winsor and Newton designer gouache since they are the only gauche I have used and they still work even after years of neglect lol I could get so much out of just a set of primary colours.

      Yeah I'd say don't get them, you can mix colors (not well) They're supposed to be layered thickly, from cup to paper. They'll crack if applied too thickly and they smell rancid, also watering them down does not work either. They are a pain to store.

    • @alainnaltz7489
      @alainnaltz7489 2 года назад +5

      I have these, and I absolutely love them. I’ve had them for at least a year, and they work really well still! I do recommend them. They’re cheaper, water down fine, layer fine, and are real fun to use. They do dry with age but some water will make them just fine. Only problem I’ve ever had is just warping of the removable palette which may have been my own mistake??

  • @artemisiou
    @artemisiou 2 года назад +2

    You are meant to add a little bit of water to water it down like you would with tube gouache. Another tip is to add a bit of white to every colour because it makes it less streaky. I was very skeptical at first but it's a decent set for your money.

    I’m glad you guys reviewed this. I bought the smaller set a few years ago and barely used it. It dried up. But I did like it so I bought the larger set and I have been using it a lot more, and I try to remember to spritz the gouache every few weeks to keep them hydrated. It’s been about a year and the paints are still nice and goopy. I often decide not to paint because of the prep and cleanup, and this set basically removes any prep. Sure it’s not the best quality, but it’s perfect for what I use it for. I put the paints in the order I wanted before I took the lids off.

    I really like working with the Himi paints. Some advice that I collected from watching lots of gouache videos, and that I have found to make a difference:
    1. Work in layers. Start off with a fairly watery layer, then add one or two layers which are a bit thicker (but not pure from the cup). This will make the top layers look smoother, and keep underlying layers from reactivating.
    2. Use watercolour paper. For gouache, you can use the back if you want. And it doesn't have to be the expensive brand stuff. But it needs to be watercolour paper. The paint won't slide around so gloopily, and will dry more evenly.
    3. Don't use watercolour brushes. They hold too much water. Use cheap brushes that are firm enough to have the control you need, but not so stiff that you reactivate and/or smear underlying layers.
    4. Move your brush in one direction in a smooth light stroke. Try not to go back to an area until it's dry unless you want to go for a painterly look. Keep rewetting your brush slightly to offset the paint drying on the pallette.
    5. Gouache is famous for having a very long ugly stage. If your painting looks horrible, it may just mean you gave up too soon or went too thick too fast.
    6. Acrylic gouache may be different, but with regular gouache most artists add at least a bit of titanium white to their colours to make the paint easier to work with and to increase opacity. I bought a big tube of Windson and Newton and add a bit of it to the Himi paints when mixing my colours. It really helps with both how the paint feels when working and how it looks when it's dry.

  • @sketchypunkin8936

    The gloopiness of this paint reminds me of tempura paint we used in school during art class (can't forget that smell) or even the paint you get with cheap paint by numbers or paint your own dream catcher sets sold to kids. I wonder if it would work better this way: color the base picture with alcohol markers, use the (watered down) gouache paint to create shadows and textures and then finish off fine details like you two did with colored pencils. You both did such a great job with such a challenging medium. And as always, than you for such a wonderful video.

    • @NelaDunato
      @NelaDunato 2 года назад +2

      Kids' tempera is basically a cheaper variant of gouache (some call it poster paint). Artist grade tempera is made with egg yolk, but the kids tempera / poster paint uses the same binders as industrial gouache. So yes, they're basically the same thing, the main difference is quality.

    Fun stuff. I advise you mix and stir them up. They are also meant to be watered down to various levels for different techniques. Spray isopropyl to avoid Mold. They 100 percent reset even if completely dried! They are my favourite paints now. Most colours are also surprisingly lightfast (based on my tests.) nude, violet, pale violet are not lightfast, and rose shifts a bit. Prussian seems to fade but if you rest it in darkness it ‘recharges’ so yes Prussian blue is lightfast. Do be careful of mould however I had some issues.I advise getting half pans pre mixing a lot of colours quickly and letting them dry. I’m looking into also getting lavender essential oil to add to it to avoid Mold in the future. Mixing in isopropyl alcohol will rid it of Mold. Anyways it’s safer to let it dry and re-wet. Also rearrange the colour order and put sticker labels on the sides to label the colours. The order is crazy rearrange the order!

    I just use this gouache because I am poor and wanted a good introductory gouache because I wasn't sure I was going to like the medium. I have discovered it is best to spritz them with water before I use them to negate the gloopiness. I do have to add water and stir every few months but I have had them for close to two years now and I still love them. I could definitely see where using a more elite gouache usually might make this a so-so product though.

    I got this set for Christmas and I like them so far. However, I did some searching around reviews and prepared a bit before I used them. For the moment:
    1. I kept the "lids" on them because they have the color names and keeps it from getting on the lid. I am also considering cutting a piece of wax or parchment paper to stick on top of them, getting rid of the lids, and writing the names of the colors on the paper.
    2. keeping a small spray bottle around to mist the paints before I close the lid.
    3. ALWAYS KEEP IT FLAT XD
    but aside from that, it's a lot of paint for the price to use for larger pieces!

I found them really disappointing when I first tried them last year. However, when I tried them again recently I found them more easy to use as they had dried a bit in the pots and spraying them with water. It's way easier to use when they dry a bit, it avoids the gloopiness and it's a lot smoother. I achieved some interesting effects with it at last!

Such a nice case for them, however really you can only travel with them unopened or wrap every paint container in plastic wrap.

      I say go for it! You can get the smaller set if you worry that gouache isn't your medium. I have had my set for over 2 years and still use it frequently. If ever you run out of a color in the set Himi actually has refills sachets or jelly pans.

    I used Pelican gouache about 20 years ago now and they were pretty good. I loved using the white one with watercolour to get a nice gradient from a light source. I want to get white gouache again for that reason.

    Seeing this video is really satisfying, because I too, thought about buying these in the craze over them. But after watching Steph's gouache videos, I decided to buy Holbein gouache set as my first gouache, and I even made a dried down travel palette. I was worried that I was jumping the gun by buying artist grade gouache while I'm still a beginner. BUT I'd say Steph steered me in the right direction, and I've been having so much fun with gouache!
    VINDICATION.

    Honestly my first introduction to gouache was Windsor & Newton and I must say for their primary set you get some good quality paint that moves like butter compared to the HIMI gouache. The jelly gouache gets the job done and does it well. I have only tried the Holbein pastel/neon blue and pink in watercolor and the pigment quality is top notch.

    I love watercolour and I love gouache. I dont like acrylics because it is harder to blend with them and they dry out pretty fast. They also dry shiny which I dont like. I like that they are opaque. So gouache is really nice because it is pretty much opaque watercolour - I mean it is not but it is. Lol, I even use my watercolour tubes sort of like gouache. and my gouache like watercolour. I mean mainly I do watercolour techniques and use them more opaquely where I need to. II use water based gouache and also water them down quite a bit but then layer and layer and layer. And they dont dry out if I am working on a piece for multiple days. Never tried Himi though. Its hella expensive for me.

    I really need an empty conteiner for any water based paints I buy in the future, and I am very tempted to buy this for this reason (and because in Brazil, the prices for imported empty palletes are absurd, like those nice acrylic ones for professionals). But I don't know if it's worth it, and if the box could have this function once I use all the himi paint (wich has a decent quality for me for now, since I am relearning how to paint, and have amost never used professional paints before) . I couldn't find anything similar to those acrylic boxes here, and I want to make my own gouache pallete with better paints once I get better at it again😥😩

    Ive found with my Himi gouache, if you let them dry up just enough for them to thicken up a bit (like wait for the top layer to be a bit crusty) and then stir them they tend to behave more like a typical gouache

    I love steph's color sense and style! Adamo's sick frog also came out adorable despite having to use a medium he wasn't comfortable with. Several of my art friends have come to the same conclusion: these paints are fine, but they're not the best and they have limitations. I'll stick with my gouache tubes.

    Winsor & Newton does a lovely vibrant gouache, Royal Talens too, and I’ve heard Schmincke is good. I tried Daler Rowney and thought they were chalkier and duller. I don’t know why these are made with a jelly/gloopy consistency, but they’re ready mixed for students to save time in exams.

    If you want another 'professional' brand to try one day, I LOVE M. Graham gouache. Can be a little touch and go to find outside the US, but the color selection is lovely traditional fine art pigment based (natural hues....no neons, metallics, premixed variations of saturation and value like Holbein and W&N has). Has a lovely creamy consistency out of the tube because it uses northwest honey in the binder. Can take a few extra days for travel palettes to dry completely, although nowhere near the dry time of the 'pudding cup ' gouaches like Himi...
    Thanks for for the video. Cheers!

    I got the 18 colour set of Himi gouache, I found them great to use. I also have the 48 set of Shinhan Pass which is supposed to be a hybrid gouache. I haven't tested it out how good they are as watercolours since i have proper watercolours and i use the shinhan like a gouache. I also have Acryla gouache from Turner, they are the most opaque and a little goes a very long way.

    I really hated the smell of these paints. I have the smallest set and it still takes up a lot of room on the desk so they're not easy to use unless you take out the individual colors you plan to use, which is messy and inconvenient... I eventually gave the set away because I never used it and it began to get dry. I did manage to reactivate them by adding water and mixing them up.

    I absolutely love gouche and I've been curious about these ever since they blew up on the internet.. but the one thing that puts me off is thinking of how long they'd stay usable.. I saw from people that it got kinda sticky in the box and on the lid mostly, some say to spray them with water regularly to keep them wet, but others say you shouldn't to that?? Seems like too much of a hassle to me honestly I think I'd prefer my many tubes over maintaining these things 😅 The lil sauce packet packaging is kinda cute though 💞
