I actually do have this set! Originally I wanted tubed paints (you're actually the reason I got into gouche in the first place as I hated acrylics and oils are out of the question) but this set was the only one I could get my hands on. It works great for someone like me that practices fairly regularly and I don't mind the mess as it forces me to use what I have in different ways.
Novice artist here, didn't want to spend too much & ended up buying the Artxx gelly pallette (2 different ones) I've had it for about 6mos & still moist, mostly due to not completely removing the original seal & sealing the entire pallette in a plastic baggie. I, too, don't like a dirty palette so I bought small paint containers to scoop tablespoon into it(allowing portable easier as well). Loving it so far. You videos are so relaxing & love your illustrations❣👏🏽
The Himi company offers this spray that you can use to keep the gouache moist or to 'revive' the dried up gouache. I noticed that it didn't lessen the thickness as much as if I had used water.
I've had my palette since February 10th and I've kept it in a sealed zip lock bag. It's not dried out at all!! I've used it quite a bit too, I've already used up one cup of white. It doesn't even have a crust on the top, it's still perfectly wet and pudding like!
I bought a 24 set of Himi gouache and it came in an artist's set with a paint pad, brushes, and some Himi gouache anti mold spray, which has kept my palette moist and mold free and I have had the palette for 3 yrs now. I bought a large zip up pouch to keep the packet of Him I gouache in, and that has helped my set not to dry out. Every 4-5 months I spray the paints with the spray to stop the mold and that has kept the paints fresh and they have not dried out at all.
I have the 24 color version i bought back in April. When I first got it, i aliquoted the paints into little plastic paints pots, 5 mL volumes. Its much more portable, i keep them in a big tin box. For the remaining paint in the palette, i sandwiched saran wrap between the paints and lid. I stored that one on the fridge to reduce mold.
The first gouache I started with was Miya/Himi gouache 18 (same as yours but in different color. Mine is pink) set at the end of June. With what’s been going on in the world and being home for most of the times, I wanted to spend more time drawing and branch out to learn new things and I ended up trying gouache for the first time in my life. For me, since I was a newbie to gouache and didn’t have any idea what gouache is supposed to be like, I thought it was a great deal for a decent price. And then when I started searching for more gouache brands and their reviews online (that’s how I found your channel lol), I ended up trying other gouache brands like Winsor & newton and holbein. Honestly, I agree when you said you feel like Miya/Himi is student grade. I much prefer to use Winsor & newton and holbein and don’t reach for Miya/Himi gouache anymore. Anyway, loved watching your video as always and very cute illustration :)
Oh yes the pandemic allowed us to take some time for ourself and try new hobbies and other, so there is always a positive side in everything! :) I think for you Miya/Himi gouache was a great started set because it does have a decent quality for a very affordable price! So it's a nice set to get introduced to gouache after all so you can see if you like gouache or not! but yeah once you try the other gouache brands that have a better quality it's hard to go back to using student grade gouache xD either way it always makes me happy to know when someone try gouache for the first time and end up liking the medium, and it makes very happy to know you enjoy my videos!! :) Thank you for your kind words and for sharing your experience!! :)
I love Winsor and Newton designer gouache. But the tubes I received were dried and had paint hardened inside the tubes! Gave me a heart attack. Though they are my number 1 favorite and Miya himi second!
I have Arteza’s Gouache and I put it in a palette. As soon as it dried it cracked even after using glycerin BUT as soon as I spray it with a mist of water it softens just fine to use. Melts like butter. It never get completely liquid but liquid enough to paint with. I’m gonna get this set as well, supply junkie here!
This painting is so sweet! I love how you worked with the colors and made it look so soft. I have the bigger-sized one but love this smaller size. It doesn't take up as much room to use.
when I took Cake decorating classes we used Glycerin to add to our gel colors if they got too thick, to thin them out a little. I am in the United States and I found Little bottles of Glycerin in the local Michael's craft store, in the cake decorating aisle. It is made by Wilton, they probably have a website. I'm sure this one would be food grade, but maybe there is a larger size available for other reasons. I think if you want to make your own bubble solution to blow bubbles with, adding Glycerin helps the bubbles to last longer and not pop as fast.
I prefer working with a palette. I have a Transom airtight palette that I’ve squeezed my tube gouache into. If I don’t have all the paint ready to go the likelihood that I’ll use gouache is minimal. I don’t have the Himi Miya set though. I have Winsor Newton and Arteza in my palette.

This is the most beautiful and well written comment I’ve ever seen, like if I was Sandra I would just start crying at how lovely and wholesome your writing was, it reads like poetry
omg this is the most beautiful comment I've ever received!🧡 it totally warmed my heart and I wish I could be as good as you to thank you for such lovely and heartwarming words of appreciation for my works and what I do, that it's really like a poetry, but I suck with words and expressing my feelings into words 😂 and just saying thank you might seems a cliche but I really mean it!! I'm so flattered by your sweet words and I appreciate it so much, you made my day and made my smile! ✨
I believe you are right with these being student grade paints because the original main purpose or target of these paints are art students in art exams in asia so they can bring out their big palette of paints without worrying too much. I've purchased this from aliexpress too because for some reason amazon doesn't really like shipping to NZ - I've tried a few times to get products, they would ship but then turn around as soon as they land here which is a shame because there are some things from amazon that are a lot cheaper even with the shipping cost or not available on aliexpress :( I also agree with you when you said these are very jelly like consistency even though the nickname came from the packaging compared to other gouache that I've used and because of that, I'm not sure that I enjoyed working with it much... AND the smell! It was so bad for me when I opened them up that I had to air it out for a few weeks but even now I get the smell - luckily for me, I much prefer to use drier gouache than fresh from the tube otherwise I wouldn't have been able to use this at all. The painting that you created is so adorable and colours that you mixed especially that mint green was so cute! And watching the thin layer of gouache wash dry is soooo satisfying, hehehe.
I am with you on not having paints mix up in different cups. I have since used a small spatula to pinch up paints I would need from the jelly cups. The soarula is easy to clean and my paints stay pure
The pungent smell was also the reason why I gave my himi away. I shifted to Windsor and Newton because it doesn't have any weird smell but it is really expensive😢😢😢
I got mine several months ago so maybe mine is different but I actually really like the smell of it 😅 smells kinda earthy to me lol. Thank you for the video! Entertaining, informative, and calming as always (:
yeah I think it was just my palette,I mean if it wasn't for the Prussian blue there wouldn't have been the bad smell xD either way I'm glad you enjoyed my video!
Hello! I love your videos and the reviews you make giving all the details. I'm about to buy gouache and in Argentina I have the option of arteza or himi, which quality do you recommend?
@@sandraruberto8806 Thanks a lot! I understand you very well, the considerations that you propose for the election. and thanks for answering me I really like your channel!
what is the difference between the 2 whites? Are they the same because we just use more or is there a difference? And thank you for this video it was really helpful, I ordered the same one and it’s coming today!
So I just got this for Christmas and I took all the paper off the little cubes and it flipped over and now the black are in some of the blues and a bit of red is in the yellow some please tell me how to save my pallet I’ve wanted it for so long and now I’ve ruined it, rn I trying to scrape off the top layer of the paint where it’s mixed 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I would get separate pans or even a clean pill box, then scoop out the mixed portions into it, & just save them as new colors (like dark blues and oranges). If you wanna have fun with it, add a bit of white or pink to your "new orange" to make a peachy skin tone and use your "new navy blue" for shadows when painting oceans or night skies. Paints get mixed all the time, on purpose or by accident. They're not meant to always be used separately, so take this as a blessing in disguise and let it force you to be creative. Have fun & play!
@@YourMajesty143 awwww this was really sweet and cute and a great idea I’m glad I saw it before I threw the mixed paint away thx, I’m definitely doing this 🥰🥰🥰❤️
