The class sounds like it's going to be really fun! I'm sure the gouache will be fine, and like you say they can always purchase more expensive tubes over time. The Arteza set seems like a decent one to start out with, and the painting you did looks lovely! That purpley colour is really pretty. 💜

Ruth Wilshaw and James Gurney. Great for learning gouache! Just mentioning them in case anyone looks in the comments for more ideas. I like the Arteza gouache better than the himi gouache, for sure!! But yeah, definitely not pro gouache

i haven't tried the arteza gouache yet, but i've been having great results adding a bit of propylene glycol (supposedly the main ingredient in windsor&newton blending medium) to help with rewettability in pans and easier spread. it's a great tip from lena rivo that it doesn't make paints as sticky as glycerin or honey - and i've found cheaper paints tend to be stickier and harder to spread out, so this really helps. if you are teaching a class it could be handy to get a larger bottle from amazon, it's much cheaper than the w&n blending medium.

I live in Washington State, and have used Arteza gouache in a mijello palette for a couple years now. It hasn't molded on me, fortunately. The mijello is the best palette for gouache, imo, and I use a mini spray bottle to keep the paints usable. This works great if you paint often and want them ready to go. I just have to store the palette flat so the paints don't run. Sometimes for my jelly gouache (especially when storing them) I add a little bit of hand sanitizer to the squirt bottle water and shake it up before I spray them to prevent the jellies from molding. I spray water as I work, and I spray water/sanitizer before storage. I "decant" the jellies into a mijello palette as well. But again, I haven't experienced molding myself. Arteza is a great gouache to start with. I prefer it for daily practice for sure. Love your videos, they always seem to inspire me. Thank you!

I've had arteza gouache in a stay wet palette for over two years now and I can assure that they didn't grow mold at all 👌🏼 when I first bought them I was struggling with gouache in addition to being very sick so I didn't enjoy painting with them very much and I abandoned them 😅😅😅 but a year ago I started gouache again with himi miya tube gouache and I loved it so I'll give arteza another chance in the future! But mine didn't crumble at all, so hopefully that diffrence doesn't affect it's moldness 😅
I just adore the way you painted the clouds 😍

The Arteza is the least lightfast gouache of the Miya-Arteza realm. However, it's not bad gouache at all to use. But warn them on the lightfastness (Kimberly Crick test). Some of the pinks and yellows will completely disappear. And Miya rewets more easily. I love those Mijello palettes so much, own three, wish I had more. I subscribed to that LMA kit too. I found that even the DS gouaches quickly got muddy on the arch in this painting, so I'm now forging ahead in your video to see how the Areza did. Update: Ahhh, we mixed our browns, you're using convenience browns. Definitely makes a difference. You did the painting very differently from the tutorial process, but I almost like yours better! Nice job.

    • @MirandaWatsonArt

I got curious. I am horrible with my gouches. Checked my Holbein paints in a Mijello pallette. Been MONTHS, they're dry but not flakey.

Hi Miranda, ive got these guache and its lovely and covers well, I tried it in A pan and it was horrible, it cracked and broke up something terrible. I then tried one pan where I mixed a tiny bit of honey in and bingo!!! It rewets great and is lovely, I hated guache when I tried it a couple years ago, couldnt see the point and didnt really know how to use it, I kept going back to it and NOW im obsessed love it so much, Im doing an A4 book of birds and paint everyday and am REALLY enjoying it!!!

I had decent luck with Arteza gouache, but my favorite affordable option is the Caran d'Ache pan gouache. It's an absolute joy to use! I saw a video indicating that the studio gouache and the fancolor were possibly the same, so I went with the fancolor option since it was cheaper at the time, and it's worked out great.

I love arteza guache the best for a student grade paint, but its not meant to be dried out in pans.its designed to be used fresh from the tube, and cracks if dried ,it does rewet well though it will crumble if dried. I only use mine fresh and occasionally rewet only whats on my palette from what i hadn't used originally. Wouldn't recommend drying larger pans worth.
