I think it says a lot about his growth as a character. Raj was terrified of women and then when he loosened up, he was a serial dater (in a manner of fashion). He was such a romantic that he loved love and loved being in love and sharing that love with a lover. For him, to love himself and being single and being okay with it is a huge step for him. Sheldon and Amy couldn't even human and by the end, they're married. Penny and Leonard were and still are completely opposite but they're both in it for the long haul and are now with child, which is serious growth for both of them. Raj wasn't supposed to have a someone at the end because he had to learn what its like to put himself first.

Raj seems like a fun person to hang out with. He's open to trying new things, and he offers to do things his friends enjoy just to cheer them up when they are having a bad day. He listens, offers advice, seems genuinely interested in having fun and making other people happy. I'd be friends with him.
Knowing that makes you realize he's too good for his so called friends. Look at how he did without Howard there to tear him down. If anything I'd say their just holding him back.

Compare this Stuart with the one in later seasons that doesn't stop complaining about how depressed he is, while we are supposed to laugh at this, what a shame. He was really a victim of flanderization. Some might have actually forgot he even dated Penny and went pretty well.
