Ultra Close-Up Epipen in Slow Motion - The Slow Mo Guys - Развлечения
7:10 Hi, pharmacist here! Just wanted anyone reading this to know that an EpiPen is NOT the only thing needed during an anaphylactic reaction. While it does save lives by addressing the initial reaction, other treatments are needed afterward to ensure the patient makes it through the reaction okay. If an EpiPen is needed, please immediately call emergency services so they can provide the other measures needed. 😊
so you keeping the other treatment a secret, i dont trust you.
I was about to comment the same thing. I have only ever had to use an epipen once, and the school called an ambulance. Thank god I am not severely allergic to anything anymore.

I want a video of nothing but Dan's mom talking about literally anything.
With segments done at 1/10,000 speed, of course.
Same!
She truly has such a wonderful voice!
Dan's Mom = MVP
Dan's Brother = Basic Teenager
Dan's favorite homemade biscuit, as explained by his Mum. Slo-Mo of Dan n Gav eating said biscuits.
I love the idea that Gavin was editing this video, came to the realization that there was way more of Dan's mom than there was proper slow mo content, and he was just like "alright, cool. Upload" lol
Honestly, that’s probably exactly what he was like. Haha
I read your comment before watching the video. Severely confused on how Dan’s mom will come in to play.
I love how Dan's mom doesn't even hesitate from Dan telling her "oh yeah we're out in the desert filming epipens" lol
Obligatory PSA for when I see anything about EpiPens: Remember to still get the person in anaphylactic shock to a hospital! EpiPens treat the symptoms of anaphylaxis for a short period of time, after that the person will need further medical treatment.
Super interesting video, thank you guys!!
Better to be at the hospital and not need any treatment than to need treatment and not be at the hospital.
It is also important to note that it is dangerous to take an epipen, nomatter the reason, a 911 call needs to be placed or at a minimum you need to be taken to a hospital ASAP after taking an epipen.
Thank you! and since Epinephrine has a half life of about 15 minutes you might need another before you get to the hospital.
@@Cyberguy42 Unless you're an American in which case you're now $4,000 in debt for laying in a bed for a bit. (No joke, I am still paying off a trip I don't even remember what I went for)
Yea thank you for saying this!!! Many people don’t know that EpiPens are short-lived relieve. It just helps open the airways to breath WHILE the ambulance is on the way.
Dan's mom sounds like an absolutely awesome mom.
Good on you, Dan's mom! Hope you the best!

This is why you guys are great - still totally grounded despite everything!
Well said, that's why we love this channel
Really does fit the "We're just two guys filming in our backyard" vibe of the channel though

It´s genius, I can´t close off the video whilst mom´s talking.

Dan: "People will stay tuned for that!"
Didn't disappoint!
Now we need a video of Dan calling his entire family and asking weird questions out of the blue
I'd totally watch that!
I do enjoy the "Epic Slow Motion" category of videos, but I think the "Let's see how it works in Slow Motion" category is my favourite.
Me too. I'd like to see a sewing machine in slow motion. They look like magic at full speed.
Same!!
There are 2 reasons why the needle retracts. 1) so you don't break it off inside you. As Dan's mum said, you're panicked because you feel like you are going to die and the careful insertion and removal of needles, as is done with other meds, is not possible. 2) it's a medical sharp and the withdrawal into the shaft of the pen prevents it from poking someone else. Thanks guys and thank you Dan's mum.
There are other options in pens like these instead of retracting.
My medical pens usually have a shroud come out when you are done, to block access to the needle. I then also fit the protective cap back before disposing of them in a medical waste container, but the cap is optional.
@@BuzzinsPetRock78 Those are designed with sharps containers in mind. Epipens are designed to be used anywhere.😊
isnt it also multi-dose?
@@abbygirl1972 No. They are single use.
@@abbygirl1972 I'm sure there are others, but I have only ever seen multi-dose pens for insulin, but you have to replace the needle every time.
I appreciate the explanation of where the bubbles were coming from after the first insertion of the EpiPen. A lot of people probably got frightened if they were aware of how dangerous it is to have air bubbles enter your blood stream, so I'm pretty sure you diverted a bunch of worried peoples' concerns. Solid call on doing such!!!
Also, Dan's mum is a treasure!
I did stay tune buddy. I didn't intend to reply to myself so much but you know, better than just spamming separate comments XD.
That small amount of air would be harmless anyways. It's take a rather significant amount of air to cause issues. Hollywood has made the entire world afraid of a few small harmless air bubbles.
It also helps that epipens are intramuscular or subcutaneous (in the muscle or under the skin). Not directly into the bloodstream.
@@KyleJones734 Yeah, like in some types of 'stings' the instructions specifically tell you not to remove any air bubbles you may find inside the prefilled needle.
they seem so much happier now that they can make videos together again. Glad to see their worlds are getting back to normal after all the covid crazies

So happy he ended his call with Cheers. And Love you.
the way dan’s mum saying “yes of course” is absolutely precious. omfg
With how the needle retracted afterwards, it almost reminds me of the needle on a sewing machine. And Dan's mum sounds amazing, enough so that, in my opinion, she could easily be one of the Doctor's travelling Companions. I'd like to imagine the length it took to have her actually respond was due to Tardis-level wibbly-wobbly shenanigans.
Yeah due to wibbly wobbly timey wimey....stuff.
As someone with anaphylaxis who has had to use epi pens on multiple occasions, this was super amazing to actually be able to see what’s happening on the needle end!
Yeah me too, saved my life many times.
Epipens are NOT anti-allergy. (There's probably a name for that but I don't know it.) They just keep the heart going so a person has time to get treatment for the allergy reaction.
@@veramae4098 Is this just a general comment on the whole video or was it supposed to be a direct comment related to mine? I didn’t say anything about epipens being “anti-alllergy”, so it seems confusing that you’ve chosen to reply to my comment in such a manner.
Epinephrine is adrenaline. It works by increasing the blood pressure and heart rate to keep the heart pumping since the blood is likely less oxygenated than usual. It also works to relax the airways to allow for easier breathing. Yes, the effective time span of 1 shot is 15-20 minutes on average and should always be followed by immediate medical treatment. Yes, epipens are not anti histamines and don’t stop the allergic reaction.

That was wholesome, I literally did not want the video to end, it’s amazing that you forget that these content creators on RUclips are just like yourself, they have a families too and that this is actually their job
This is STILL one of, if not the most, entertaining and interesting channels this platform has ever seen. No question
I experienced an epee-pen shot without being in anaphylactic shock during a medical study and I can confirm that your heart rate increases whether you're panicked or not. It doesn't feel very good but you can feel your body's metabolism speed up. Your body temperature raises and you feel like you should move around. Unfortunately I couldn't get up because they had to do other procedures on me.
Many injected dental anesthetics (like lidocaine) include adrenaline/epinephrine as a vasoconstrictor, and you can definitely feel its effects even in those relatively low doses of probably less than ⅙ of an Epipen's dose. (~50mcg in a whole single-use vial of lidocaine vs 300mcg in the EpiPen.)
@@wbfaulk microgram is written µg
@@Soken50 not in medicine
@@wbfaulk I've got the box and notice with me, they have SI measures, are you perchance from the U.S. of A.?
@@Soken50 Yes. And it's still an SI measurement; it's just the symbol that's swapped out, because it's much harder to mistake "mcg" than "μg" for "mg" (especially in handwriting) and accidentally have someone be given 1000 times the dose. The "mcg" symbol is definitely used in the UK, too. That said, the Epipen's dose in the US is listed as 0.3mg, which I suspect is pretty common for integral multiples of 100mcg, as it's even less difficult to confuse. But I wanted to use the same unit in comparison, so I converted.
The epipen was interesting; Dan's mum was worth the wait. What a lovely and charming woman.

Thank you for doing this. I must have misunderstood the instructions on my pen and your video made me go back and reread the instructions to get it right. I've never had to administer the pen but I'd sure hate to have a failure when I needed it most. Thanks again
So cool to see up close and in detail. My son was allergic to nuts, milk, gluten and during a provocation test in the hospital had an anaphylactic reaction. I was told by the nurse to use a pen like this (call it a form of training for the parent). The cool thing is you can even use it through clothing, like jeans (the ones we have at least). The reaction subsided fairly fast (just minutes) and after about 30 minutes he was completely fine again. It is a fantastic invention and lifesaver and he always carries one with him. We never did any provocation test after that though, as we did not want to put him through this ever again...
The fade to black with the caption saying his mom never picked up while the dial tone ominously plays in the background is comedy gold 😭
She is so cute lol I appreciate how sweet your mum is ❤
I don't know if i'm more impressed about the footage or about the fact that Dan's mum understands a GTA III reference.
I LOVED that Dan's Mom was part of this video!! Wishing her decades of good health and happiness. Interesting and awesome content as always! Cheers!

Dan's mum is right, you get a rush of adrenaline (metabolized epinephrine), and then you get the let down afterwards. I ate a dinner roll on a British Airways flight from NYC (JFK) to Birmingham UK (BHX) 29 years ago and had to use my epi-pen due to ground walnuts in the roll. When I used mine, I did not feel the needle in my thigh. I pulled it back a little to see the needle and shoved it back in my leg. After being seated by myself, my pulse rate just sitting was above 120 per minute. It lasted about 30 minutes, then I fell asleep. After waking up, I had to assist the crew chief to fill out an incident report since it had been reported to the airline. My epi-pen did not retract the needle. The doctor at BHX had never seen one and asked if he could have it. I do believe it saved my life on that flight.
I just love Slow Mo Guys and other channels similar like Smarter Everyday. Nothing is over produced and there are a lot of genuine interactions.
Not just 1, but 2 very British phone calls! Love the response to filming with ballistic gel ".... yeah" 8:33

Experiencing migraines all my life, I’ve done 1,000’s of these stat-dose pens of Imitrex. Eventually you can find spots on your body where you don’t even feel the needle. The older pens had so much force, they actually bruised the skin at the injection site. Thanks for the video. Now I know what’s happening inside the body!
I like how Gavin does the mph calculations and also love the phone calls. Have Gavin call his mom now
I love that this is trending on RUclips and more than half of it is just a charming normal conversation between a mother and son.
Love the interview, love Dan's mum, wish her all the best and thank you to her for letting us hear her description!
I have to take a CPR / First aid class every 2 years for my job, and it's getting more and more common for them to have "dummy" epi pens, this classic style and a really cool newer one called Auvi-Q. They let you practice the feel of using one without needles involved. I call the Auvi-Q one really cool because it has spoken instructions that will guide you through using it, like how long to hold at against the persons leg or wherever, and they sent our First Aid instructor a whole pile of them for free (he had to buy the other ones) and I think their actual epi-pens are a good bit cheaper than the old school ones too.
IIRC Tom Scott did a video with one of the defibrillators, the new equipment that walks you through the steps is a great idea. Aside from the fact that plenty of people won't know how to use it, even if you do, when someone has just collapsed/is in shock/having a seizure etc. having the thing you're using just go "ok person, do this, then this, then this..." is super helpful.
I know the big epic stuff probably gets the clicks, but I’m always absolutely fascinated by the small everyday stuff like this. Good vid, gentlemen.

I never seen this before, I’m intrigued. Thanks for showing us Dan And Gav
I had pens like these to inject a prophylactic medicine against migrane. It only hurts as much as you can basically expect when a needle is pushed into your skin & flesh, but the thing with these is that you are actually supposed to hold them down for a while (like 20s or 30s or so) after it started to make sure they are all empty and the needle retracted as supposed...probably also that less material squirts out of the puncture hole if you were to pull it out right away. But there is a retraint in your body that after the pain starts wants to pull it out immedeately which would be the normal reaction, so you have to overcome that feeling and force yourself to keep pushing it in, even though it hurts. Challenging thing to do each time anew.
Absolutely love the more in-depth footage they showed (showing it under the microscope and calculating the speed it goes.) Love this channel.
After all these years these videos are still great. Straight to the point and if not it`s good banter, not trying to push merch for like 3rd of the video`s length. No stupid hype how something awesome is coming in the last minutes of the video. More and more succesful channels become just about selling you stuff and fake excitement and hype. Never change please, this works.

How right you were Dan.
As someone who has had to use well over 100 EpiPens in my life (yes, sadly, I'm serious), I was really excited to see this video! Now I can tell my friends that I inject epinephrine (not morphine 🤣) at 15 mph into my thigh on a semi-regular basis 😂 Also, it should be noted that you should seek emergency services immediately after administering an EpiPen. You can have a "rebound reaction" where the initial symptoms return as the epinephrine wears off and they can even be worse than the first reaction! The hospital or emergency room can give you medications like prednisone (a steroid) and other things that can help prevent a rebound reaction from occurring. Stay safe, my fellow allergic friends!
Poor you - I've only had to inject myself once, and that was scary enough.
I concur with everything you say. I'm allergic to wasps. In addition to the epipen I also take two antihistamine tablets. Always call emergency services. If out and about the app "What three Words" can help you describe your location, especially if you are off the beaten track.

I can't believe they didnt show it firing into the air. It seems exactly their scene to see liquid streaming out, and see how fast and how far it goes.
Epipens are designed in a way that prevents them from doing this. The front surface with the needle has to be pushed into something firm in order to trigger it. Would have been cool to see in air though, for sure.
@@SirEatsCrackAlot I think they could likely press the whole front surface on something hard with a hole in the middle for the needle, and if it actually needed the very small part ofthe needle to have something hard press against it they could use some material the needle could punch through as its intended to do just with nothing on the 'inside'/other side
@@SirEatsCrackAlot you can just push it against a piece of card, the card presses the plastic pressure plate and it releases the needle which goes through and squirts its content into the air
