I got into a mild car accident last year and had a piece of my tattoo skinned clean off my knee! As the wound was healing I could see the tiny needle marks where the ink used to be under my skin, it was kinda cool. This video reminds me of that!
As someone with my first tattoo set for a week from today, this is really good to know, even if innacurate. I have a visceral reaction to needles so seeing it now as it isnt literally inside me is helping me get used to seeing them enter skin. Thanks guys!! ❤
I have three tattoos. The first two hurt like absolute hell, and now I know why. The needles were way too deep, and it caused extreme burning for 4 days + they scarred and are raised. My third tattoo was clearly the most professionally done.... It barely hurt, and didn't burn at all afterwards. No scar. Really cool to see what my skin had to go through for the sake of some kewl symbols, haha.
Thats why you want to try and avoid heavy-handed tattoo artists. Only one of mine really hurt, and it's because the artist was practically leaning on my thigh to get the ink in.
I got a pretty big tattoo on my inner forearm 3 yrs ago and it kinda just felt like a bunch of cat scratches and only really hurt when he got closer to the sides of my forearm
I’d happily get involved. This video is interesting and is cool to see such detail. The guys did a great job but there definitely a lot of miss info/incorrect things going on here.

*I would love to see a professional tattoo artist demonstrate technique on the ballistic gel,* I think that would be fascinating. I'd also love to see that same artist tattooing a person. I don't know how good of a shot you can get because the ink tends to get everywhere pretty quick, but definitely sounds interesting
Same! Especially about the big one on my ribcage. Done in a single 5 hour session where I didn't ask for a single break. I think it's my proudest "achievement" 😂
so many people in the comments are like “this is why i could never get a tattoo” which is valid and i understand but i have four and my only thought was “this is SO COOL”
Someone commented recently about how well these vids are edited, i.e. no fluff in the intro and just gets us straight into the point of the video. This vid is a shining example of that - there was a golden exchange, but (presumably) Gav cuts it to appear at the end, so we've both got straight into the action at the start yet were able to enjoy the exchange. Such a good channel, keep it going lads
Seeing how the needles didn't actually deposit ink into the wounds directly but instead the ink being drawn into the wound after the needle had already been drawn out was absolutely fascinating! definitely not how i would have assumed it worked.
This is absolutely crazy because two weeks ago while we were in studio we were talking about how amazing it would be if you guys created a video that showed tattooing in slow motion, and what it look like from inside the skin. Lo and behold you delivered! Love you guys!! ❤
As a tattoo artist the first pass you took with the liner needle made me cringeeeeee lol we definitely don’t go that deep that would scar someone up reallll quick. Silicone and similar mixtures are actually way harder to get ink to stay into. This was a great demonstration of how the needles actually get ink into the skin though. That is how it works in skin, those rubber mixtures just are harder for the needles to penetrate to make that ink transfer happen. With proper technique of pulling a line with tattoo needles, looking it it from the side, I’m pretty sure you’d see something somewhat closer to a solid rectangle going as deep as the needle did, instead of the jaggedness they had if that makes sense. No offense but homie would not be pulling clean lines like that 😂
This channel is not about the cameras and technology, it's about the ideas, skill and execution these guys have mastered over the years 🙏 the way they control a tiny focus area is just amazing
I'd be interested in a part 2 where you slow-mo record an actual tattoo artist putting a little tattoo on some gel. That way you get his insight and he gets to see the "underworks" of what he's been doing his career.
I grew up watching the Slow-Mo guys since the early days, my forever favorite one will be the paintball gun one LMAOO!! Seeing them get older brings tears of joy 🥲
That's great footage as always, and the ending was hilarious lol. BUT: how about bringing up a tattoo artist to show exactly how deep it goes and maybe using other types of materials to give more insight into the process? That would be really cool
@@lrpredaBut is it actually deep? When they put the finger near at the end you can see how little the needles are so I don't think the video with the expert would be so different
To any aspiring tattoo artists out there, remember this, "Different skin takes ink better than others." I only have 3 tats, two of which were are cover ups, but there was a significant difference in pain levels between different artists. While I was getting my coverups, I mentioned to the artist ( a 40ish year old woman who had owned and operated her shop for 15 years ) how much less painful it was compared to when I first got them, and she told me my skin held ink very well. She went on to say that some artists really dig into the skin to guarantee the ink fully penetrates the top layer. It's not wrong per se, but it's not always necessary.
I have 4 tattoos, but my skin is the opposite of yours, I had to have 3 of them touched up because my skin doesn't hold the ink very well and one of them still has a couple of colourless blotches after 2 touch-ups. Strangely it's the 3 black ink only ones that didn't stick well, the one with colour had no problem at all holding the ink, I wonder if it's something to do with the make-up of the black ink.
Had to get my 4th tattoo corrected because the artist ( not the guy I've gone to for my other tattoos ) didn't go deep enough. The ink in the middle of the lettering all fell out during healing. Even now a couple years later it's still lighter in some areas. Will get it redone by my regular guy eventually.
@@Moondragon1821 My 4 were all done by different artists at different studios, the best result was the cheapest studio that unfortunately shut down, so I need to continue trying other places to find another good one. Unfortunately the most reputable one in my area is out of my price range and has a 6-8 month waiting list because most of his customers are celebrities.
I have 4 tattoos, 3 of which caused frustration with the tattooist as the ink wouldn’t take, so an hour long tattoo took 3 hours and it felt like I was being massaged by a cheese grater the whole time. Apparently I have leather skin. Inner bicep/armpit area was fine, though.
I got a small tattoo on my wrist in 2022 and the needle felt little more than humming along. Was honestly quite shocked by how mild and painless it was. The anticipation/anxiety was 10000x worse - would love to see that in slow motion ;D
@brumslybrumbino9516 false lmao, they hurt. But they arent unbearable depending on where you get it, and the shading, lining and such. Theyre fun and arent all that bad
It depends on the area as well as the amount of time it takes. It can get irritating after several hours. My first one took 6 hours. It went from my back to my hip. About a foot long. It didn’t hurt to me, but closer to the end during the shading it had a sunburn feel to it.
@@TheSpanishInquisition-2 the way they applied the ink in this video is far from correctly done. The amount of trauma is pretty minimal if done correctly with the right needle depth, machine voltage and hand speed. Even the angle you hold your machine at will have an effect on how the ink is put into the skin. Some lining needles require a different technique and machine speed compared to others depending on the amount of needles in the cartridge. Hopefully this helps you understand more? If not im happy to answer any questions i might know the answer to😊
@@TheSpanishInquisition-2 your needle only ever goes between 1 - 2mm into the skin and one of our primary focuses is to reduce trauma as much as possible. An artist will usually make no more than 2 "passes" with a needle over skin if they are doing solid packing. This rule changes for certain shading but yeah. Its just kinda how tattooing works
@Tattoosbycal Yeah i'm crayon speed painter guy on tiktok, I just got my first gun and I would Like a method that is completely painless... I'm practicing on myself and i've been stabbed quite a few times. Super deep seems way useless... 😢😢
Preferably get some translucent practice skin (about £4 or $5 per sheet) because it's designed to better replicate human skin for budding tattooists than ballistic gel which is designed for ballistic testing, as the name suggests.
I appreciate the ad segment with the robot arm showcasing the lenses. Clever using the repeatable accuracy of the robot, while changing the lenses seamlessly. Cool.
Watching this slow motion video of tattoo needles going up and down was truly fascinating! As someone who's never been interested in getting a tattoo, this gave me a whole new perspective. I've officially come to realize it's not my thing, but I appreciate the artistry behind it.
I didn't think about skipping it, since I have a general interest in photography and macro lenses. I was waiting for the company name to be displayed though, since I have never before heard of "laui". It wasn't shown, so I still don't know the company name (of course I can likely find it in the description, my point is, it should have been in the video though).
@@moos5221 It's Laowa, which you can see written on the lenses themselves. Absolutely fantastic lenses, though quite expensive when you get into their more professional stuff. Luckily a lot of their stuff isn't too expensive, especially when compared to a Canon lens, haha.
This is really cool, but I think it could have been better if there was a real tattoo artist there to talk about the differences between the gel and actual skin and also demonstrate a proper technique and depth (I'm sure the guys were close, but an expert would have been better, maybe) with professional equipment. Also, don't feel bad, Dan, most of the people I was in the Army with, including myself, went from working out a lot to having dad bodies 😞
This channel is like comfort food to me. I've been watching since 2013. Just hearing your voices, the banter, and all the sound effects bring so much nostalgia.
I've seen that tattoo artists will have a paper to wipe off the excess ink of the surface of the skin after drawing for a bit, but seeing up close how it pools on the skin in slow motion as it moves is actually quite cool.
@@_ericsherrill Regardless of the depth still you are still objectively injuring and infecting your skin that your body will fight against until the ink get erased over time. (yes white blood cells eventually manage to fight and erase the ink)
@@_ericsherrill Even still, I’ve never been interested. To me, a lot of tattoos are just permanent expressions of temporary emotions. While there are certainly tattoos that hold sentimental value and I wouldn’t think less of anyone else for getting them or invalidate the feelings they have towards them, I don’t feel the need to display those feelings on my body when I can just display them through my words or actions. Also, our bodies change as we get older. What looks good now probably won’t look good several years down the line.
As someone with tattoos, it's fascinating to see that this is the evolution of it and it makes sense how it works. lol It also explains why when you shed the ink "comes out" since it's not in the part of the skin that'll hold it because it was pushed through and some bits aren't the stay forever bits. Neat ^_^
Considering the skin is made up of 3 layers I wonder what this would look like if you could have a thin layer of ballistic gel stuck to another bit of ballistic gel.
You can pour clear gel, then slightly less clear gel (recycled twice) and finally non clear gel (5 times or more) in one sitting, thus creating one piece with different layers.
I got a new tattoo two days ago. It took 3.5 hours. This is so insane to watch because in those 3.5 hours I never registered the needles going that deeply into my skin.
I have a few pieces of ink, this is absolutely fascinating to think how it actually works, and how it looks through the layers. Insane, yet disturbingly beautiful.
Congrats on getting sponsored by Laowa! I'm absolutely jealous that you got their probe lenses since I sadly can't afford them, but I'm super happy with my 25mm 2-5X macro lens I got from them. They've really stepped up the quality of their lenses and are looking to fight it out with Sigma and Canon. I cannot wait to finally get their f/0.95 lens since it'd make for some excellent nighttime shots.
I don't like the idea of tattoos, but as an artist, I've sometimes wondered how a beautiful design would look on my skin. This has definitely perished the thought forever.
This was super cool to see. About a year ago I got my first tattoo. I'm very scared of needles. Getting blood drawn is always anxiety filled for me so I totally get why people are scared about this. My step-dad actually deterred me for a few years because one night he was acting like he was going to take me to get a tattoo and then said something like "let's go turn your arm into hamburger meat" lol and I panicked and didn't go. Now I know everybody is different and even though I don't like needles I'm also not one of those people that faints when getting stuck so I know not everyone will be able to do it. I held a friends hand the entire time because I was nervous but it truly wasnt that bad. I got mine on the inside of my wrist. The first line that my tattoo artist did almost tickled. Now that is a very sensitive area so the closer he got to the center, where the skin is thinnest and there's a lot less meat, the more it began to hurt. Tattoos (for most normal people) don't feel good. It's not a massage. But even though it started to hurt it was pretty bearable. In my opinion the worst part about getting a tattoo is while it is healing it itches and you can't scratch it lol for a couple weeks it would itch and all I could do was lightly tap it. So if you want to get a tattoo but you're scared, just know it's really not that bad
In over 2 decades none of my tats has ever faded. They all took in real well to my skin. When I tell people it's been over 2 decades since I've had them and it's hard for a people to believe it based on how fresh they still look. Never needed a single touch up. Even when getting scared or cut by an accident. Even when my wound heals the tattoos literally remained the same. I can only imagine the amount of sessions I would need to go through if I ever wanted to get any of them removed.
I’ve had mine for some time now. Not 2 decades 😅 but the only part that didn’t hold well was white on my skin. Everything else still looks so good and I’m glad it isn’t faded but then again idk how long it takes for most peoples ink to fade. I asked us assumed after like 5 years. But mine are doing great. So thankful 🙏🏼 thank you Lord
Ballistic gel has the properties of human bodies at the scale of a bullet etc. While this footage is incredible, it's quite fairly likely to be different from how ink behaves in actual skin.
It would be great if you could get a tattoo artist collab to help with the correct way it would look done profesionally, either way the video was amazing!! Thank you Both guys!
@@sup445 when you get one you realize that it wasn´t actually that painful, it's bearable really. I recommend sessions no longer than 3 hours tho, last one I had was 5 hours and 45 minutes and it was of course more painful in terms of having to endure more needling
@@negazion1 Taking sugary drinks and snacks for long sessions apparently helps, I can't confirm this myself as my longest session was only 90 minutes, but a friend who regularly has 4-6 hour sessions told me this.
If the 1.5 mm deep comment was accurate on the red shading needle, then yes, tattoos definitely do go that deep. The epidermis is 1-2 mm thick on average. If you are only getting ink into the epidermis, your tattoos probably aren't lasting very long.
For those saying I'm lying or my tattoos don't last...i assure you they do, Watched on mute, didn't hear the depth, I'm old school learned by look and feel, and it looks too deep to me, that's it.
3:28 I remember when I was younger going to a cadaver place, and a cross section of their skin where it was tattooed looked like that, but translucent yellow.

Next time someone says 'it's not that bad' in response of my reasoning for not wanting one, I'm showing them this video. Like good on anyone who can stand to get a tattoo, but sitting there for hours as someone does that to my skin just seems incredibly unpleasant to me lol
The pain depends more on location. The needles are tiny, the pain is not that bad. I've got tattoos and I've seen the video... and I plan to get more. They honestly needed a real tattoo artist to do this because they are often going too deep.

I have seven, designed all of them so I would never regret them. And they absolutely don’t hurt at all. Actually fell asleep for all of them.
The thing about time is that it alters what kewl is
That fact that people pay for pain Is funny, if punching people was a job I’d be all in.
Would love to see a sequel to this episode with a professional tattoo artist (or several) involved!

No offense but homie would not be pulling clean lines like that 😂
Thank you for saying this! I was starting to think I was the only one who cringed at the depth and throw of the needle.
Unfortunate that I had to come this far down to see your comment. Lets vote it up to the top!

Exactly, I think the needles were too deep
@@Moondragon1821they were probably trying to avoid blowout.
I got a small tattoo on my wrist in 2022 and the needle felt little more than humming along. Was honestly quite shocked by how mild and painless it was. The anticipation/anxiety was 10000x worse - would love to see that in slow motion ;D
Tattoos don’t actually hurt, they’re just annoying depending on where/how long they take.
It didn’t hurt to me, but closer to the end during the shading it had a sunburn feel to it.
my foot tat took 20 minutes and hurt worse. Still not bad but because it’s a bony area it’ll not be as pleasant.
Love the detailed sound design on this one!

As a professional tattoo artist, this is both hilarious and insightful. Love it. I want a few more tattoos..
Half way through every Slo Mo Guys video, I realise I'm watching with my mouth open. Like a state of perpetual awe.
It's actually made of 7 layers and the ink replaces the 4 layers
Thinky thinky.
@@victorfiore6332the ink doesn't 'replace' the 4th layer, it resides ideally between the 4th and 5th layer.
