This game got around $300,000 on kickstarter. Mighty Number 9 got over $3 million. Let that sink in.

Yeah, that got me good, and the bill you get from doing that was hilarious. Real shame the game ended up being so short, but hopefully there'll be some maps to download in the workshop soon.

There was a lot of kickstarted games that were worth all the wait.
Cuphead is another that came out a couple days ago delivered exceedingly well.
Shovel Knight, Cuphead, Divine Divinity: Original Sin, Divine Divinity: Original Sin 2, Shadowrun Returns, Banner Saga, etc.
Time for me to plug Hollow Knight it seems.
Also, Cuphead isn't a Kickstarter game. It was funded by the devs remortgaging their houses instead (not a joke).

Why would you say something so controversial, yet so brave?
This is the kind of game I want to see more of in the industry. The kind of game that takes elements from other games we love but tweaking, modernising and approaching old ideas in a brand new way that makes the game feel distinct and fresh with its own personality that truly shines. That's why I love Doom 2016 so much, it takes all the elements I love from 90's shooters but turns it all completely on its head in a way that's still true to classic Doom but is an entirely different but amazing beast of its own.
A Hat in Time doesn't use nostalgia as its selling point but rather takes that nostalgia and tosses it up in the air in a fireworks display and shows the gaming world that there's SO much more you can do with old ideas that never got old in the first place.
Yeah I get you this game is very different and isn't using nostalgia as its selling point and that is amazing!!
I'm starting to think using nostalgia as your main selling point leads to a terrible game. Just look at Mighty No. 9 and Yooka-Laylee. Both selling on nostalgia, both bad games

Well I would think maybe some gaming companies might make them. After all this game went very well and Yuka-Lelee was a modest success as well. The thing about established companies is that they have a history and also shareholders. They NEED to be successful so they won't do something if they don't have evidence that it will work.
This game looks so freaking adorable. I'm always happy to see a small group of creative people succeed and deliver. I can't wait to try it out, I will NEVER be upset about more happy, adorable games being available to play. Wonderful video as always!

With those graphics it should run perfectly. It's not a triple A title so lagging would just be stupid with those low graphics
Just because it has a cartoony art style does not mean "the graphics are low". This game is pretty visually intensive in some of the areas. There are a lot of particle effects, lighting tricks, depth of field, and other visual flairs. Plus, the levels are pretty big, world 4 in particular. I'm sure the PS4 will be able to run it, but it might not look as good as the PC version. I'll take a steady frame rate over a higher resolution though.

Good Kickstarter games like Undertale and Shovel Knight are still widely discussed today, while mediocre ones like Mighty No. 9 and Yooka-Laylee tend to be forgotten about after a month of being released. I have a feeling A Hat in Time is going to be one of those games that will be talked about for years to come.
This game was originally to be released in 2014, but I remember Shigeru Miyamoto once saying that a delayed game is eventually good, while a rushed game is bad forever. Will I get it? Most likely, but I'll have to see how much I have first.
probably because those good games are actually unique in their own ways instead of trying to make the same game with a different skin :/

Serathis well considering Undertale has already two console ports and I definitely see people making fanart and such of the characters on various websites like 2 or so years after it was released I’d say people still discuss it.

Dude THANK YOU for covering this game. I had never heard of it, but I watch all of your reviews because you are constantly introducing me to new, cool, and unique games I wouldn't of seen otherwise. This looks AMAZING!! I'm in a commitment to not buy games until I'm debt free at the moment (aaand its quite a bit of debt), but this one just leapt to the top of the list of games I'll buy as soon as thats over. Holy COW does this look fun, charming, and right up my ally. Charm is one of my favorite things in games...it can make a bad game a game I absolutely love, just because it has a charm to it. This, by no means, looks like a bad game. It gives me an Okage meets R&C sorta vibe with the humor, abstract character designs, and quality platforming. Damn dude...great video. You're really coming into your own. Every time there is a new Nitro Rad up, I HAVE to watch it as soon as I get some down time. Keep up the fantastic work dude. I'm rootin' for'ya!

It's nice to hear that after being so long in development the game ended up great. It looks so damn charming. Having both this and Super Mario Odyssey in one month is just great.
With how good Yungtown was here and the controversy around Jontron being in this, it’s easy to forget the other examples of great voice acting
Hard to believe that the Conductor is voiced by Xander Mobus - the same announcer from Smash and the voice of the protagonist from Persona 5

Now if only they did the reverse and have Yungtown in Persona 6 or Smash 5.
This game is fantastic though, I think it’s a great example of why platformers shouldn’t just copy Banjo and Kazooie / because we don’t want a clone, we want an innovative progression of the platform genre by taking from others to create something new and original. I mean, some would say it’s all over the place but I love how different it all is - stealth, Paper MARIO scenario, open world, Floodless levels from Sunshine, etc. I just want more now, either more levels or a sequel which expands on the four levels.

Playing A Hat in Time with a Gamecube controller truly felt like those good old Gamecube days.
My only "complaint" is that the beautiful concept art doesn't really translate very well to the character models. Hopefully A Hat In Time 2 (or even better, a new ip) has better graphics.

Dai Ngl, it’s probably a fault on your part (No hate, just saying it might be) since the game was ported to PS4 and soon the Switch, and from the PS4 footage, it runs fine
@Hypno Bagels To be fair, the game was incredibly heavy in its first version, and has been seriously optimised over the years. I only just realised I have been using the first version for so long, and when I updated it, the game immediately became smoother

Wait they weren't free. I got the switch version when it only had the first DLC, Seal the Deal, in a bundle with the DLC and by the time Nyakuza Metro came to switch, I had to buy that. I purchased the DLC bundle but because the second DLC wasn't there, I had to pay extra, when it should have been free because I purchased the DLC bundle!
@@t-bird6853 dude, what? The dlc bundle includes the game + the dlc, it says nowhere all future dlcs will be free, it just means you can buy both the game and the FIRST dlc at once

I was surprised by how good this was. Spoopy mansion is spoopy. I fell in love with the cat boss' voice.
I backed this game late when I found it in 2014. The alpha build that came with it was more than enough to keep me happy even if it only had about a world's worth of levels in it. This is definitely one of the few games in the past few years that I've been legitimately hyped for despite how cynical I am with releases nowadays and I'm sure as hell glad it didn't fail to please. It's just as fun now as it was back then.
I am surprised that they changed/removed certain parts though. I remember in the alpha build I played that there was a rocket racing level (as in you're on a rocket and not just the mafia. I can see why they removed it though as the rocket was very hard to control), moustache girl being a lot friendlier and a scene with hat kid getting older.
A Hat In Time is my favorite games I've ever played, it's cute, it's charming, and it was worth the wait.
I really like when you review a game you thoroughly enjoyed.

A hat in time is one of my favourite games ever. I dont have "a" favourite game. I have 2 favourite games and 2 favourite franchises. And a hat in time is one of those. I love everything about this game. The music, the fct you can have up to 6 files, the characters, levels, mechanics, story, and the DLC. It just rocks

I finally picked this game up on Steam a few days ago. And I'm ashamed of myself for not getting the game sooner, because it was an absolutely phenomenal experience. I still have yet to touch the challenges in the Seal the Deal DLC just yet, but I'm thinking on waiting to do so until Nyakuza Metro comes out. This is a very charming game, and I highly recommend players who are a fan of platformers to try this out.

You have PERFECTLY described what makes this feel so damn fun. it really recaptures the the feeling of plaything those amazing games we grew up, while still feeling new. It feels like all my favorite childhood games (paper Mario, sure Mario sunshine) rolled into a package. Good job, best review of this game out there.

This game looks amazing. I love how the developers sometimes use a dithering effect in place of smoke and other transparency effects. It's a nice callback to games on the Sega Genesis and Sega Saturn.

I heard somewhere that adult hat kid will be one of the DLC chapters. Take it with a grain of salt of course, but I think it would be interesting to see if the platforming changes at all.
I know I’m late, but according to one of the devs, it was part of a scrapped version of the ending. After the final boss, you give one of your time pieces to Mustache Girl and as a result don’t have enough fuel to get home. Years pass before Hat Kid and Mustache Girl run into each other again, and when they finally do, Mustache Girl gives the timepiece back to Hat Kid, as she has completed ridding her island of the mafia.

I first played this game after finally playing Psychonauts. Obviously the Milkman conspiracy is my favourite level from that game and the Crows from A Hat In Time really reminded me of the G-Men (undoubtedly a reference) and i loved them
You really should revisit this one, since there are some dlcs and since the workshop is doing so much good.

This game warms my ps2 gaming heart. Everyone talks about it being 3D Mario but by damn this game reminds me of some much more. 3D sonic, ratchet and clank, sly cooper. If this came out all those years ago, it wouldn’t even be out of place among the great platformers

I had $50 on PSN and recently re-completed one of my favs Banjo-Kazooie. I was faced with the option of this game and Yooka-Laylee. My die-hard instinct was overcome by the love I felt for this game. SO HAPPY I chose this AMAZING experience! Still love Kazooie Tooie Sunshine and Thousand Year Door*Myfav RPG*, BUT A Hat In Time is seriously EVERYTHING I.I'M looking for in this genre!!!!! Maybe he started recording by pressing a key on the keyboard which made the game switch to keyboard mode. After pressing something on the controller it switched back.

The devs were smart to decide, "We are going to be our OWN game." Not copying anyone, not trying to "give homage" to whatever, but being your OWN THING. More devs should learn to do this.

You say the setup is all there is to the story but then you showcase all the "scenarios." So no, that''s not all there is to the story. It appears to be an anthology of sorts.
I think his point was more that the initial concept is simple, the individual missions are not really part of the main story.
Maybe comparable to Spyro 2?
Well, he did kind of misrepresent the story here. *At first* the only thing you know about the story is that you need to get all your time pieces back to get home. Then, in the various chapters, you encounter smaller local stories, like an anthology. And by the end it feels a lot like the big overarching story has developed and become a lot more complex *through* those smaller chapter stories. (Trying not to spoil anything here)

Oh I am so glad to hear this seems to be a great game! I remember when I saw the kickstarter and I've been waiting for this for those dreadful four years! :) THis just brings a smile upon my lips to know it's good.
The only thing I can think of while playing this game and/or watching something about it is how much I loved every second of it, and how much I wish there was more.
I was an early backer of this back in 2014 and am happy that despite the crazy long wait it sounds like it was worth that. Can’t wait to DL it tomorrow!
NitroRad you must have nearly identical taste in games as I do. Ever game you've ever shown and praised that I later tried I've found tons of enjoyment from. Glad this channel is around I will continue to look forward to those awesome 3D platformers
