Last time I was at CBGBs was Halloween 1999 for Guitar Wolf, when they recorded their "Live" album. My buddy Tim, John Stabb (Government Issue) and John’s wife Mina came down from DC to meet me at the show.
My wife and i were visiting New York and had to go and see CBGB`s. CBGB`s was closed however the front door was opened so we went inside and there where 2 men counting a large pile of money. They turned to use and we asked if we could go inside and have a look. They said yes and we had the place to ourselves. That was a blast and an awesome experience.

A few blocks north, corner of Bowery and E 4th is Phebe's, nice bar.

Very cool video Scott, I went to NYC in 2005 and stood outside CBGBs, I did ask the door guy if I could pop my head in but he said no. One of my biggest regrets is not taking a photo of myself outside as it closed around a year later. There was a cafe/bar next door called CBs at the time if I recall and I bought a badge in there which I still have today. Thanks Scott, these places are historically important.
I was a huge straight edge hardcore fan in my 20s and A LOT of bands played at CBGB’s when they came through new york or were from around the east coast in the 80s and 90s
I remember getting into clubs and bars in the late 70s it was an awesome time too be alive. The best of music growing up in 60s70s 80s90s . Thanks Scott ,✌🏻❤️ out
Thanks for the video. Awesome to see they kept some of the original interior. I had the privilege of playing there with my band in the mid 90s. It was definitely one of the highlights of my “rockstar” lol years. We played a Thursday night which was kind of an audition and we’re asked back to play on a Saturday night.
Just about to watch, between 1977 thru 1980 my friends and I were there a few times a week for the most part. I saw, met, and hung out with some amazing bands, Dead Boys, Ramones, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Television, Blondie, B52s, Devo, Talking Heads, etc etc. I saw the Police first time they played in the USA, there were maybe 30 people there, I think it was a Wednesday, Roxanne was just about to be released, we just hung out in the dressing room and smoked pot with them (Sting didn't smoke lol) Greatest days of my life, some awesome times for an 18 year old girl. So sad. We used to play there a lot in the late 70's and it felt like my second home. I can't remember how many times I'd plop into a taxi from my apartment in the West Village and say to the cab driver, "Bleecker and the Bowery, please!" The stage used to bounce up and down with every band member hopping up and down, so when you were trying to sing, you had to keep your mouth away from the mic a bit -- otherwise, you'd knock your teeth out! The bathroom was great and we used to run down there constantly to do another line of coke. haha A unique place, for sure.
The Bad Brains art on those steel shutters at the beginning of your video is the s**t ! I snuck into CBGB’s myself back in the day. Of course with a little help :) There will never be anything like it.
It's great seeing CBGB's! My old band Plunk Fusion played a live set at CBGB'S back in 1998! It's great to see that they kept the authenticity of the club in the clothes store. I haven't been there since. So many great bands came up out of CBGB'S. The Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, amongst many more like MSI.
I was at the final closing show of CBGBs with my parents and saw Bad Brains, the Dictators, the Waldos and Blondie! Me and my dad both got wasted double fisting long islands and kicked out of the club by the end of the night in true CBGB fashion haha legendary club, so thankful I went with my parents for an amazing night before it closed for good. A night I'll never forget. Thanks for showing what it looks like now! cheers!
My family and I were on a double decker tour bus and we drove by CBGB's. I freaked out, the driver never even mentioned it. Next stop I stopped a taxi and asked if the guy knew were CBGB's was, he took us back down there. My wife and kids stood outside because they were young kids, I went in and was stoked. The lady behind the bar told me they were closing in October, made me so sad. I couldn't believe how low the riser was. Glad I got to go in it.
What a great time walking south on Broadway right passed "Tower Records' and then making a left on Bleeker and heading across Lafayette, where Bowie lived, passed Mulberry and Mott Street until you got to the club. I worked the door at a place called "Under Acme", which was a small BBQ restaurant with an area in the basement where bands used to play.
@@alvalentin6384 HA! I forgot that part. Actually I think that was the show I bailed on load-out and woke up the next morning wondering how I got home and where all my gear went 😀
Played CBGBs in 95. Still had that grime, great time. The staff dug the band and took us out to an after hours bar the size of a small living room. Great times! Yes, played there! Played The Continental the next night.
That was a great time! The late nineties into the 00’s. I was there almost every Sunday then for the $5 HC & Punk matinee shows. So many wonderful times spent there.
I live in Scotland and one of my best trips to New York was being able to visit the original CBGB,s and meet the legendary Hilly who allowed me to tour the club and he spoke with me for hours at the entrance to the club....one of the best experiences in my life he was such a generous and intelligent person....I always wondered why the music industry didn't club together and save his precious club

Thanks for this. I've walked by the place but always figured it was just a bougie clothing store now. It's good to know the owners preserved at least a little bit of the original.
Sweet! Thanks Scott, no lie, I was thinking about this club when I would frequent the place often. I was so bummed when they shut down. I was a guitar tech for a local band. Too many great bands to mention. 🤘🔥
I was lucky enough to go to CBGB's in 2005 right before it closed. Got to see a small show and picked up a T Shirt. Glad I went, I noticed that place Mayne held 200 people, and the stage was like a foot high. I'm from LA, so it was a treat checking out some New York clubs. Wish Maxes was still around. I'm a huge Dolls and Thunders fan. It was a cool place. F John V or whatever his name is.
You’re saying f John V but did you watch the whole video? He has salvaged the walls while still running his business. He couldn’t have completely gutted it but didn’t. Which in previous posts I thought he did !!! So I’m actually surprised
Scott, people stopped going to clubs in NYC because they banned smoking in bars around that time. Places like CB’s had a no re-entry policy. So when people went outside to smoke they couldn’t come back in without paying a cover again. Plus the neighbors began complaining about the smoke going up through their windows from the crowds of smokers and their noise outside all night. Another thing also began. Higher taxes. This drove Hilly so move to Nevada and he opened the club again in Vegas but it was far from the same as NYC. So basically the city drove classic clubs like CBs out. A cool factoid. Tommy Victor from Prong was a sound man, and artists like Blondie, Izzy Pop, the Ramones and Talking Heads were regular fixtures. It was legendary and it’s a shame the city didn’t honor its heritage the way they should’ve.
I guess I'm just that old lol When I was part of the scene circa 1977 through 1980 we smoked inside cbgbs, I even have pictures of me and some friends inside smoking, in fact I stole an ashtray, a shotglass and a mug, all glass lol I don't know if there was a no re-entry policy back then, if there was, I was one of the lucky ones because we'd go back and forth between cbgbs and Max's Kansas City, we always got back in without a problem.
Any time have seen this place, I just figured they re did it all and stocked $750 dollar jeans. Things change, that’s part of life, but I’m glad to see this video and they do seem to indeed understand the history of that building.
Best times for great bands.that was my kind of place. Thankyou scott for taking us all on a magical mystery tour once again .I live in ireland but I will try to visit that amazing shop next holiday 🇮🇪🙂😎🎸🎸🎶🎶
I love the Ramones, and it looks like a place they'd play, lol! It has that very punk feel. My favorite Ramones album is "Road To Ruin" and as every 80's teen knows, you totally trashed your LP's. They were played constantly. No matter how hard you tried, scratches happened. It now is proudly framed above my bed. Along with my first Cher album (an Australian Release) and my original Bay City Rollers album from my very early teens. All of them hold significant meaning to me. Thank you, Scott, for taking us to places we may never get to visit! Take care and stay safe! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I didn’t know they had kept so much from the original so that’s cool to see! I had assumed it wasn’t really worth going in there because it was just a normal store.
This video reflects very well on the new owners! Until now I had always only heard it was turned into an "upscale clothing boutique" and presumed the place had been gutted apart. So cool to see this isn't the case!
Wow. What they’ve done with that store is gorgeous. I used to watch a Interior Designer show who would have called that style “Ugly Beautiful.” Couldn’t say it better myself. ⭐️
My mates encouraged me to see a then little known band but Mum said no! ( well there was a drive-by shooting murder about that time at the bar in question and I was only 17. My mates got to play on the drums at set up. The band's name ... The Cure.
We love you Scott. Wow what a video this was. I had to watch some of your old ones too that I missed watching. You're amazing and we love what you do 😊
that is good that Charlie kept it from being change and kept the whole history in the walls the same only if the walls can talk lol thanks for sharing!!
Great stuff bro ,I remember seeing crowded house there in the 80's it was so much fun knowing people that could get you in to clubs and get you drinks 😬the one thing about that club after hearing a band you couldn't hear it so loud and small and you'd smelled like smoke , good shit brother
Great video! We visited the RRHF this Summer and after looking around to make sure the coast was clear I quickly touched the famous CBGB awning...I was just as quickly told 'Don't touch!' but I did again anyway...because that's what punk CBGB would have wanted.😎🤘
I grew up going to CB’s hard-core matinees on Saturdays and Sunday throughout the 1980’s. I was 13 yrs old the first time I saw a show there and was hooked That was our home base! Miss that place. Even more I miss those days when we were young and had zero responsibility.
I first played CBGB’s at a Monday night audition showcase in the spring of ‘83, and my first real paying gig there was at a Hardcore Matinee in July of 1983. My band played there many more times over the next 2-3 years and I got hired to work at the desk in the front of the club in the winter of 83-84. Those were great, fun nights. Everything was friendly and fun, we rarely had any trouble and I got to hear some amazing bands and stories while working there. I miss that place so much.
It was my 40th last week, I'd saved for years to go to New York to do this, however with the floods (and TBH how NY has been as of late), I didn't go. One of my biggest regrets was not going to CBGB's when it was open. Thank you Scott for being on tape, and doing this video!
I was in CBGB's only one time, to watch my brother's band play. The whole time they were playing, all I could think about was all the legends that had played in that small space.
2018 😁👏Love the Village! Won’t say too much as my last comment sounded way more confusing than meant! So sry! Maybe one day I’ll make it back there. So much nostalgia!! Great stuff! 😎🎸
Good evening scott enjoyed that gosh you go to place's i never knew exsisted thanks for sharing ( thanks charlie ❤ i did get a wee giggle there you letting the traffic past and then telling a car to shut up 😂😂 regards from dublin ❤❤
I traveled from Boston to see Chis Knock and fellow legendary New Zealand band the Clean in the late 80s at CBGBS It was an incredible show! One of the highlight was when David Kilgour broke his string and while fixing it Chis Knock came on stage and did an impromptu song about burning the chairs while Hamish and Robert Scott were pounding away with bass and drum.. Once David got is guitar in order they broke into "Point that thing".
I do love how this old store kept some of the original building frame and walls of the original club. One of two places I wish I could have gone to. The other is Studio 54. If only the walls in both clubs could speak, the stories they would tell.
I grew up in Connecticut and never got to go to CBGB’s could never get anyone to drive up with me such a shame, such history, loved the Ramones never will be a group like them again 😿 ty for the great tour and history facts🤗

I was 13 yrs old the first time I saw a show there and was hooked
That was our home base!
Miss that place.
Even more I miss those days when we were young and had zero responsibility.
Omg I was geeking out watching this video!!! More excited than any of the LA bars and clubs. Thank you John for keeping the walls up!!!!
That was great Scott. I've driven past CBGB when it was closing. Haven't been there in years. Thanks again.
I wish I could go back in time and see White Zombie's very first gig there. Thanks for this, Scott.
I was sold on this video the moment I saw the new & current Bad Brain's mural in the opening at 1:00. That is something you would only see in NYC.
You’re the first to mention the mural!
I miss that place so much.
you ever have to take a dump in that bathroom?
back when you could almost afford rent? lol
It was my 40th last week, I'd saved for years to go to New York to do this, however with the floods (and TBH how NY has been as of late), I didn't go. One of my biggest regrets was not going to CBGB's when it was open. Thank you Scott for being on tape, and doing this video!
Very cool Video Scott, such an iconic place and it's still standing wit sooo much music history. ❤😊 You Rock! CBGB was one of a kind place in NYC.
I wish I had gone to see Ramones - CBGB, NYC (September 15th, 1974). Just it.
Wow very very cool Scott this place is iconic! I was in there like a month ago so freakin cool! Great job man👍🏻🤘🏻
I was in CBGB's only one time, to watch my brother's band play. The whole time they were playing, all I could think about was all the legends that had played in that small space.
So addicted to your channel after finding you .binge watching everyday since .thanks ✌️ ☮️ 🕊
I was lucky enough to play here with a band I was in right before it closed.
Social Distortion played there in 1992. i still watch that show on VHS!
2018 😁👏Love the Village! Won’t say too much as my last comment sounded way more confusing than meant! So sry! Maybe one day I’ll make it back there. So much nostalgia!! Great stuff! 😎🎸
Your last comment was funny lol don’t worry !
I know you're gonna dig this new York city 🇺🇸
New York City 🇺🇸

Patti Smith Group at CBGB !!! Legendary !!!!! Thanks for the vid Scott !!! 😎 Bob From Michigan !!!!
I do love how this old store kept some of the original building frame and walls of the original club. One of two places I wish I could have gone to. The other is Studio 54. If only the walls in both clubs could speak, the stories they would tell.
Now to see a good chunk of CBGB you have to go to the Hard Rock Orlando at Universal. I got the VIP tour there in 2012. Seemed odd to say the least
I was under the impression they had completely gentrified it and disregarded the history but im glad they kept some of it alive
This was a real Treat..Thank you scott
I grew up in Connecticut and never got to go to CBGB’s could never get anyone to drive up with me such a shame, such history, loved the Ramones never will be a group like them again 😿 ty for the great tour and history facts🤗
Nothing like the old school rock/punk/metal scenes.
Damn Scott...
Good to see they have (somewhat) kept the original feel. Good to pay tribute to the past.
I must admit its a great sympathetic job they have done 👏👏👏👏🇬🇧
