I know it's unlikely, but based on megapixel amount not sensor size, a comparison between this and the GFX50 (even though it's Fuji's older version) would be interesting i think?
Please address the buffer...what happens during a sports shoot--how many shots before it's full and does the camera stop working or restrict certain functions?
Noise comparisons at same field of view gloss over the fact that the per pixel noise is much worse. If you want to crop you better be shooting at low ISO, or you might as well be shooting with an A7III. And notice that no reviews show tight crops above 100 iso. That's because by even 320 the detail is gone.
The good news we have yet another choice when it comes to buying a camera that best suits our personal needs at the time. Those needs may be both real and imaginary. The bad news is we have less and less excuses for not consistently creating excellent results. So it does not come as any surprise that all we hear is excuses. But that is nothing new, it is our nature to blame anything and anyone but ourselves for our failings and shortcomings. This is why those waiting for a perfect camera have a long wait, since a perfect camera requires a perfect person to use it. You heard it before, the best camera you have is the one you have with you. This is why we should not be surprised that legacy cameras are being replaced by advanced smartphones. That the technical knowledge requirement to create the image in camera is fading away thanks to post capture apps that enable quick turn around of images, that are lost even quicker on the Net. This is why I still enjoy going old school and slowing down a bit by using my analog Fujifilm GSW690 from time to time and having imperfect prints made to share with future generations.
Another very excellent review. Well done! I do agree that the body is rather small. I would prefer it to be a bit larger as this would give more space for larger buttons and even a bigger battery.
It's also rhe depth of the regular grip. If you have big hands, you hold the camera only with your fingers. If you then have heavy glas on it, it feels stupid.
When Sony α9 was released it seemed to me very expensive. However the price of the Sony a7R IV isn't very high for a 60 MP camera. More megapixels with sharp lenses are always welcomed.
I have an A7III and an A7RIII. The difference is I can crop in a bit more with the R model but otherwise I can rarely tell the difference visually. The biggest difference is the file sizes. My software that can stack and process photos can really get bogged down with the A7RIII files. The A7III files just seem to take no time at all. I use my MacBook Pro with a lot of ram and i9 processors but the A7RIII files can still stall depending on the software. Imagine what A7RIV files will do to my post processing. I guess I would have to say no to the newest Sony full frame camera until I can afford a quantum laptop.
Anyone notice the weird clarity slider ghosting around hard edges when boosting those underexposed shots? Looks impressive at first, but there's a lot to correct in post
Very nice ! So in short I’m coming from a A99. And A99II. I have had my A99 for a long time now . It fits my fat fingers and Bulbous thumb well . My question is . When you put the lens adapter on it. Using a Sony a mount lens. how well does it function.
I love my a7r3 with the grip attached. Fits awesome in the hands. I find myself a little underwhelmed with the ergonomics of the a7r3 without the grip. It is nice though when I take the grip off and the camera is small again. But when I attach the grip, I fall in love all over again. Big hands here... you know what they say about big hands? Dudes with big hands need grips for their small cameras!
Here's a question: I'm a Nikon DSLR guy shooting mostly landscape and wildlife. I'm considering getting a mirrorless camera but not sure if I go Nikon Z7 II or SONY 7R IV and what would be the most versatile lens to get for this genre of photography + finally which adapter do I buy for the many Nikon FX lenses I have?
The Sony α7R IV is very expensive in comparison to the initial price of first generation of the Sony α7 series. I hope it's price will drop soon. In theory for using photos on internet, 8 to 12 megapixels are enough. But for cropping and general digital image processing more megapixels from larger image sensors are always welcomed.
Jordan. 2:02 No more MogoPod, for quite a while now, eh. Feet too big? I've actually been shooting Hi Res Mode successfully from the Mogo with a 10 second delay because of those big feet - and of course thanks to your recommendation.
This would be the perfect camera for wedding and portrait professionals if only it had options to change raw files to maybe 36mp and a 24mp file size. it also could be really be a bit wider so it can be more comfortable in the hands. What would really be nice is an articulating screen for those low portraits, I hear the video people complaining about that but we photographers need the flippy screen also.
I need to move to Canada, nice people great weather. Im in Australia its early spring we are already nearly pushing 40 C that sucks. I reckon this year we will regularly push 45+ maybe might hit 50, feck that.
If the only complain is no build in grip? Well add a grip or a extender or l-bracket (like. the smallrig one) adapt a camera to your needs its easier to add things (post buy) then to remove it. Nice review but i do feel you should on the R models spend a little time on crop mode since the R's have a kind of a hidden aps-c camera inside. The af becomes full, buffer becomes 3x the size, write speeds go up and you still have 27megapixels without aa-filter. Pair it if needed with say the new 70350mm in your bag and you have a darn nice 525mm/27megapixel camera for sports and wildlife 'just in case'.
You can always beef the body up with battery grip but you cannot remove the large size body into smaller when needed. Upgrading from the first a7 which is really fit my hand and weight to a7iii which is substantially heavier in my hand than the first one. I know they have to make the grip bigger to accommodate the Z battery but the grip is kinda big, at least bigger than my right hand. Not to the point of uncomfortable dslr grip size though.
How would the af tracking on this compare to the D850 or D500? Is real time tracking on the Sony as reliable as 3d tracking for sports? Can the Sony pick up and track wildlife in dim conditions against tricky backgrounds as well as the D500?
For me, 35 to 40 mpix is the sweet spot for a camera. I don’t need that 60+ most of the time and the file sizes are insane. I want to upgrade from my a7rii, but the a7iii is too much of a step back, and this is just too much. Help me out here, Sony.
Nice video again shame Sony don’t just lower their prices - some hopes I suppose. There will never be the perfect camera there will always be something the Company’s won’t include on the next production. Comment on the eye focus on Jordan he looked as though he had just been told a sad story😂 always enjoy your videos though Chris and Jordan thank you both. Very informative as always.
The GH5 is back as your tool?!? I wonder, the footage of the Lumix S1H to me looked not as good as it was supposed to be. My guess, focussing with the larger sensor is harder. As I daresay big sensor formats like the one of the Alexa 65 push Hollywood towards wider views. Anybody has thoughts to share????
I have a laptop I was just wondering what are the requirements as far as having a computer to run for the sony a7r 4 camera, because I will only be shooting raw.
Thanks for the review. Boosting in low light poor Jordan looked like a plastic doll. That was not good. The 6400 iso he looked much more natural. I think an updated sensor/processor and body in the A7III will be fantastic.
I don’t think the small size complaint is valid because you can easily add a battery grip and it becomes close to dslr sized. My other though was just more critical about his outdoor portraits. I thought it was point less for him take shots outside because he gets so close to the subject you barely have a recognizable background. Could just do your shot indoor and change your background lol
Late to this video, and great review (informative and entertaining) - and a quick question: would a medium raw file be able to be addressed by Sony in a firmware upgrade, or is this something that has to be hardware only?
I treat my A7R3 the same way I treat my Nikon F2A. They are cameras for still photography. For videos, I grab my a6600. Why I don't have an R4 is because I balked at the price where my R3 was $1,000 cheaper. Love it, fantastic camera.
I just bought an A7R3, my first mirrorless system (overkill for a beginner many would say but I caught a deal I couldn't pass on). As an experienced user, have any tips for a newcomer? Thanks, happy shooting.
Does the a7r4 have any evf lag issues or degrading when using in studio and the image preview is turned off...so basically using like an optical, my lumix s1r is almost unusable in these situations so looking to shift over to the a7r4, form what I can see in your video it has none of this, or surely Rene would have mentioned it ?
The next version of Sony A7R will be very nice if they totally dropped ALL video options (they could make it as an app instead !) , dials for ISO and shutterspeed atop of the camera, drop the compensations dial, in fact making it a camera that is a joy to use in manual settings, because a high megapixels cameras is after all best for landscape photography ! Thank you for reading this Sony :)
After getting my hands on this in store, I have to agree, I really love the buttons other than the weird nuances that you mentioned. All of my comments about the buttons from the A7III being too mushy and hoping for the buttons to feel like the 'Record' button, have been addressed. All the buttons feel really nice and tactile. I just don't understand the two different locking mechanisms on those dials and that threw me off at first. Otherwise, I think this is more of the good stuff and even better feel. Even the battery door and side I/O panels feel really great.
A little late to the party...but to answer your question, the non-lockable button on the mode dial presupposes that no one wishes to risk accidently changing the mode while shooting a professional event. The clickable lock button on the compensation dial is to allow those who use compensation regularly to do so without having to press a button, while permitting those that don't to lockout the dial altogether (e.g. manual shooters who like to control shutter speed, aperture, and ISO). Personally, I could do without both of these locable buttons. In fact, I think the compensation dial should not as hard to turn as it is, while I wouldn't mind a harder mode dial if it meant getting rid of the dreaded lock button.
Intersting to here what he says about the handling as that is one area for me that has but my of all of the Sony camera I tried the other bigger issue is the menu system. But thanks DPReview for an nice video, Sorry but I love my X1D (I know you hate, and may BIG D850).
it would have been interesting if you would have put the new grip on the Sony A7RIV and let that shooter use it with it on as it would have been a more familiar feel to him. Oh well.
Don't really get it what you're saying about the shadow boost at 8:01. Is it something like the Pixel's low light mode? Will be great if you can dedicate a video on the a7R IV's shadow boost feature!
They just mean that the relatively low noise levels of the sensor mean you can massively underexpose a shot, and then boost the exposure in your RAW converter, without taking a major noise hit. That isn't the case with old sensors, and still isn't the case with some new(ish) sensors - Canon 6D mk2 I'm looking at you!
@@Penguins247 Ah I see - better dynamic range. So it's the usual ramping up of shadow area details during post processing. I thought he meant the camera can do it automatically
Rene, Chris will never tell you this... But if you want a full size Sony... With crazy best fully articulating screen for vertical togs like us... Consider the a99II A-Mount. 42mp @12fps still the king... And no crop in 4K 30p like all the other little Sony's. a99II is the only Sony lineup with identical controls on vertical grip to match the horizontal layout. And yes it has face and eye detection at full speed full resolution. a99II focuses better in studio modeling light environment because the lenses monitor wide open and only close down when shot is taken.
You mentioned the A7R IV does 6fps when set to uncompressed raw. That is not accurate, no where on Sony’s web site does it say that, it does say HI+ is dependent on the camera’s settings. I called Sony Pro support and they said It will do 8fps while using uncompressed raw but it depend on the camera settings. Personally its important to me that the camera is at least be as fast as my A7R III. If you do a little digging on the internet you can find a few tests that average between 7.2 and 8fps. I don’t own the A7R IV camera but I think its important to make sure your facts are correct for people that believe a certain spec is important to them. BTW this is not a review, more like a fun session with a guy that doesn’t like mirrorless cameras.
Has anyone compared the a7r IV to the z7 (extensively)? I am still on the fence as to which one to buy and why. I'm an enthusiast likely to shoot with primes mostly, for street, portrait and landscapes. Also, thoughts on the z lenses compared to the Zeiss lenses for Sony re: quality and sharpness. Thank you - Cheers.
I feel like your thoughts on video performance are always an after thought and I’m always tuning in specifically for that. Please make separate reviews for video performance. There’s a bunch of us who just shoot video and don’t really benefit from a photo heavy review.
I went into quite a bit detail in our earlier a7R IV preview, and didn't think it would be worth everyone's time to just re-iterate the same information here. Check it out if you haven't already!

I know it's unlikely, but based on megapixel amount not sensor size, a comparison between this and the GFX50 (even though it's Fuji's older version) would be interesting i think?
The best RUclips reviewers.
I think the word you are looking for is best entertainers. They prioritize entertainment value over review value. That is their brand.
A7R4 & A92 I love them both :)
Michael Pierce ... yes, it is a perfect combo for Sony-shooter ... 👍
Please address the buffer...what happens during a sports shoot--how many shots before it's full and does the camera stop working or restrict certain functions?
when is the a7iv coming
Noise comparisons at same field of view gloss over the fact that the per pixel noise is much worse. If you want to crop you better be shooting at low ISO, or you might as well be shooting with an A7III. And notice that no reviews show tight crops above 100 iso. That's because by even 320 the detail is gone.
I am sooo tempted to get the a7riv... Getting tired of waiting for the a7siii
Don't really get it what you're saying about the "shadow boost" at 8:01 ? What is difference between A7RIII
vs A7RIV ?
Hi I have a 950gb laptop i7 with a standard amd radeon graphics card. Is this good enough for a sony a7r 4 camera?
I just wanna know when the Sony A7S III is coming out!!! Mega Pixels Smega Pixels! I want an update to the low light monster!
... why does the guy not use the battery grip if the camera is too small for him? was the grip not available at the time of shooting?
It's also rhe depth of the regular grip. If you have big hands, you hold the camera only with your fingers. If you then have heavy glas on it, it feels stupid.
weizenobst müsli ... oh yes, it’s sooooo stupid! 😅😅😅😅😅
When Sony α9 was released it seemed to me very expensive. However the price of the Sony a7R IV isn't very high for a 60 MP camera. More megapixels with sharp lenses are always welcomed.
If you can drop 10k on a system..
weizenobst müsli Indeed the holy trinity of zoom lenses with the Sony a7R IV costs around 10.000$.
@@AgnostosGnostos , and you need the expensive glas that has enough resolution for the sensor. Otherwise its wasted potential :-D
Add a battery grip. Problem solved. Did it for me just fine with the a7riii in terns of handling
Sony should make a really huge battery grip for people who are overcompensating.
@@AmitZinmanVideo Some people have large hands or prefer the ergonomics of a bigger camera. Nothing wrong with that.
Great to see Zeiss Batis 85, this is my favorite lens for Sony A7 cameras
Here's a question: I'm a Nikon DSLR guy shooting mostly landscape and wildlife. I'm considering getting a mirrorless camera but not sure if I go Nikon Z7 II or SONY 7R IV and what would be the most versatile lens to get for this genre of photography + finally which adapter do I buy for the many Nikon FX lenses I have?
Thank you Chris and Jordan. Nice review!
you can get eos R mark 2, after A7 mark 6 release.
Very curious to hear your opinion on mechanical shutter with strobe? Not loving it on the a9....but supposed to be better on a9ii.?.
Be careful what you wish for. Alberta is like -100°F for 10 months of the year. That cold goes right to your joints. Believe me. Michigander.
@@scottslotterbeck3796 l have noticed that your summer seems to last about three days.
@@peterlemke3468 In Sacramento now. Summers last from April to October. Hotter than hell, too. 108°F not uncommon.
Switch to canon or nikon because sony sucks in cold weather
Come to Toronto, best of both worlds.
What's the best camera you have tested for aiming up and looking at the stars
Great review as always... lumix s1 user here, what would be perfect is the af of the a7r4 in the s1/r body... that would be awesome
Great camera for everything! I wish Sony add the full articulated display on the side like the ZV-1 camera.
OMG snowing. Snows, what, 11 months of the year? Canadian lingerie, hilarious.
Seriously, excellent photos, gentlemen.
best reviewers on youtube !!!!
In your opinion, is it possible for a standard zoom lens like the 24-70 2.8 GM to fully display the 60 Megapixels of the a7R IV?
You can always beef the body up with battery grip but you cannot remove the large size body into smaller when needed. Upgrading from the first a7 which is really fit my hand and weight to a7iii which is substantially heavier in my hand than the first one. I know they have to make the grip bigger to accommodate the Z battery but the grip is kinda big, at least bigger than my right hand. Not to the point of uncomfortable dslr grip size though.
The S1 focus can complete in stills, I think you’re confusing its video focus which doesn’t match.
I am not so sure it can for tracking AF.
@@zomgonzo Yeah at about 6 fps it tracks really well.
How would the af tracking on this compare to the D850 or D500? Is real time tracking on the Sony as reliable as 3d tracking for sports? Can the Sony pick up and track wildlife in dim conditions against tricky backgrounds as well as the D500?
Your already complaining about the cold? What's going to happen at the end of December to January?
Not to worry. That is 'chinook' season in Calgary.
Do you think Rene would have like it more if you had added the battery grip, since that was his main dislike?
OMG it's already snowing on your side of the country! hope we have a few more weeks before winter here (Montreal)
I hope everyone has someone in their life that looks at them the same way Chris looks At Rene in the video's thumbnail.
I have a laptop I was just wondering what are the requirements as far as having a computer to run for the sony a7r 4 camera, because I will only be shooting raw.
Chris, I like your excitement about the arctic winter :)
Thanks for the review. Boosting in low light poor Jordan looked like a plastic doll. That was not good. The 6400 iso he looked much more natural. I think an updated sensor/processor and body in the A7III will be fantastic.
Great work Chris and Jordon
Ancient SLR experience ^^ hits it on the head!
0:44 thats the same look Jordan gives Chris
Love that lens choice!!
I can’t for this years end of the year drunk video :)
What?

you can't cover a doo like his. that is some legendary hair right there. Jesse and the Rippers style.
Sony a7r iii in Grey market cost 1800 euros... So no, a7r III is the best choice right now.
What about "shadow boost" in SONY A7R III it works that same or only in A7RIV boost work great ?
How does this camera do at concerts?
"I heard that!" Great intro, guys.
The out side shot of the camera on the tripod at the industrial site looks odd. The tripod looks like its moving on the kerb !!
Come on Nikon! I’m waiting for that Z9
HI can I ask what specs you need in a laptop using lightroom photoshop with the Sony a7r4?
Has anyone compared the a7r IV to the z7 (extensively)? I am still on the fence as to which one to buy and why. I'm an enthusiast likely to shoot with primes mostly, for street, portrait and landscapes. Also, thoughts on the z lenses compared to the Zeiss lenses for Sony re: quality and sharpness. Thank you - Cheers.
Great review . Kudos all around.
Jordan Drake yeah, I saw that. But this was generally speaking. Video performance feels like an after thought sandwiched between the photo performance review.
