    Here’s the net/net of it, Dan charges $10 for the PDF but it’s well worth it.
    I just bought my A7R IV and his guide is awesome. It makes you realize that not everyone on RUclips who puts up an A7R IV video knows what they’re doing (albeit they’re well intentioned). For example, I have seen multiple videos tell you to set the RIV to AF-C, not necessarily true. If you’re shooting subjects that don’t move, you should use AF-S, if your subject moves, set it to AF-C. I haven’t heard anyone else mention this.
    There are also some other great sections that self-explain why you might not be getting the focus from the RIV you think you should by just understanding what the damn setting really does.
    Great guide.

  • @brianknight7208

    Great Video. however, are you sure there is a low light performance difference between crop vs full? and as far as file sizes go, there is another option to consider if you need uncompressed, and that is aspect ratio. I believe that you can crop to 16:9 and reduce the file file size.

    Hi Dan, thanks like always was useful and perfect. Earlier you gave me very nice advise about resolution of some cameras and today with a7riv again I need to know your professional opinion. Still to me image quality, dynamic range, and colour tones are just stunning. 1) Do you think 5div is better or at least same with lower noise and better dynamic range? 2) I’m fan of Fujifilm film simulation to make very artistic photos straight away from camera, no need retouching process, but still higher MP seems more important tome (XH1 - with amazing IBIS and XT3 with AF new features -mis not enough and still GFX100 is too expensive for me), don’t you think I should not compare a dslr with mirrorless cameras which is VS optical and Electronic viewfinder to edicted shooting with preview system rather than what you see = what you take? 3. All useful features seem came together in new a7riv as you described here and still I remember that D850 won in your last comparison video over 5div and a7riii. So, what do you say overall about a7riv? I would appreciate if you answer my questions separately. Thank you.

    Hey Dan. Do you find that you are missing precise focus (I should say noticing it) with such a high pixel count camera?
    I’ve only shot on 24mp cameras (a6300 and a7iii), so I would imagine the threshold for what appears to be precise focus is significantly greater than that of the Riv.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  4 года назад +1

      If you zoom in to 100%, it makes any focus misses more apparent but once you zoom back out or export that to a normal resolution, the result is no different than a 24mp camera. Itt's pretty rare that anyone would actually view my photo at 100% with 61MP except me zooming in on my computer either to check focus or do some pixel editing

    Hi Dan, thank you for your content. Do you have anything specifically on FPS/film settings on the A7RIV?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  3 года назад +1

      Hey! I do not but I'll give you a big recommendation and that is to use the APSC crop mode a lot for video. It's insanely detailed especially at lower ISO. Otherwise, most of the same recommendations you would find in the A7III would also apply to the A7RIV

    • @NicholasPaulFranks
      @NicholasPaulFranks 3 года назад

      @@learningcameras Cheers, Dan... I'm planning to shoot a night-time piece on a 55m 1.8 soon, hence fiddling around with different fps... why is punching in on the crop setting so good?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  3 года назад +1

      @@NicholasPaulFranks Nice! So these high resolution cameras can't sample 62mp to create 4k video but in the APSC crop mode, they can which typically leads to higher quality video. That's the reason cameras like the video oriented A7SIII have low resolution sensors

      @@learningcameras It's definitely going to be important otherwise you risk mistracking when it matters the most. Sony should be the one having a video about how to do this real quick but pretty much with nearly all products released, everything isn't known. Should've seen what coding could be w/ with the BMW on US models. They've removed a lot of good coding that exist only in the European models with a software/firmware value change and nothing else. Also, with motor bikes, US or International versions are better. For some reason the Yamaha R6 can easily power wheelie in 1st gear w/ the Euro stock tune on Power Commander 3 but on Any other tune it doesn't power wheelie at all.
      It's great youtube exist as it's the best we have at the moment.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  4 года назад +1

      Yeah, Sigma's new lenses are crazy sharp. The Sony 135mm F1.8 is also one of the best around though a bit limited with that focal length

    • @stuartschaffner9744
      @stuartschaffner9744 4 года назад

      I doubt there is a best. The simple answer is get a high-quality lens and don’t close it down beyond about f/4. The more technical version of that is to use diffraction-limited optics and keep the diffraction blur spot diameter below the pixel stride on the sensor. I would point out that high sharpness means low depth of field, which in turn means that most elements in your image will be out of focus anyway. When you get to where you have to choose whether the catchlights on a subject’s eye or the eyelashes should be in focus, you might have entered a world of diminishing returns.

    I was amazed when playing with Sony A7RIV how much noise there is in the shadows of its raw files. Any sort of shadow recovery and the white specs (a result of lots of chroma noise being "removed" with raw converters) is absolutely terrible. I think these white specs are more offensive than just normal noise, about as bad as banding.

    Just got your menu guide, even though I have an A9 and an A6600. Thanks! I think that their high configurability is both the best and worst point of Sony cameras. Configuring a camera to your workflow is a huge advance, but there’s a learning curve. We all survived the transition from pocket phone to smart phone; we’ll get through this one with some help from people like you.

    Is there a difference in apps-c mode or just cropping after the fact? Any quality benefit in APS-C over just cropping? Sorry for the newb question!

    • @kingweddingmedia
      @kingweddingmedia 3 года назад

      There’ll be absolutely no benefit in terms of quality. The main benefits of shooting in aps-c mode would be:
      1. Saves space, smaller files, camera can clear the buffer quicker when shooting. Your computer will be able to work with the smaller files more efficiently as well.
      2. It gives you the framing there and then in camera - not really a huge benefit unless you’re maybe trying to learn a particular focal length and want to constantly see that as you’re shooting.
      I can’t think of any other major benefits of using crop mode compared to cropping in post.

      There is a setting in the menu for turning on/off touch focus so check that. It should not be the lens unless autofocus is turned off. I believe it is page 10 and item "Func of touch operator" according to my menu guide. I do have the full guide going over every menu item on the A7RIV so maybe check that out geni.us/A7RIVguide

    Have to say that 45mb for a jpg is just nonsense. If you put that in Photoshop and save at 12 quality you probably get half the size of that with the same exact quality. Also, this is the reason why heic will take on jpg
