Complete, step-by-step guide on how to rebuild a GM 10-bolt rear differential with 8.5" or 8.6" ring gear. This rear end was used in many GM vehicles including Chevy Tahoe, Silverado, Suburban, and Avalanche as well as a handful of RWD cars. It was also used in the Cadillac Escalade as well as the GMC Sierra and Yukon.

You can do this with regular tools, but some specialty tools are required for gear setup as well as making the job easier. Here are some links where you can buy the rebuild kit as well as the special tools:
The bearing kit I used (CHECK fitment for your vehicle!): amzn.to/3GFNwbl
Pulley holder tool: amzn.to/3w3CiZi
Shim driver: ebay.us/EyBYeH
Dial indicator for checking backlash: amzn.to/3Xt5CUv
Pry bar set (your best friends!): amzn.to/3ZsgPqe
18" breaker bar: amzn.to/3H3hxD3
You dont even need a freezer, just the oven or heat it up slowly with a torch. It slides right on and drops on. Great video though! Love how in depth your videos are.
Great video! The best tool in your arsenal for this job was that good ol brake cleaner 😂
when you’re talking about a gold surface that the bearing will sit on rather than using red Loctite, you should use Marine tax Apoxsee. It sets up super hard. We use this fix in the Marine industry and it works really well and it’ll hold up to whatever you can throw at it.
Love the attention to detail
u didnt show how to put spyder gears back in the pumpkin aka carrier. amd the pressure plates order . i need to know the order and how to do it mine are to tight to turn the gears to put the middle h spacer back in im so freaking lost yo
what cause you to do this tear down what was the symptoms ?
Are the axle seal and pinion seal included in the bearing kit?
I’m changing from 3.23 to 3.73. I have the ring and pinion. I’m getting the master kit too. And Yukon gear. I’m just wanting to be sure do I need to re shim my carrier after changing ring and pinion and keeping stock carrier or leave the shims it has already?
Genius (great workmanship)
Parts description plz
Pretty good video
I like it
But careful with the blade when cleaning the old RTV at minute 27:28
It was pretty close
I almost lost the game there…
Thank you for the video you gave me great info only thing is you didn’t say the size of the pinion nut where the crush washer is at .
Mine is 1-1/4", 32mm should work also.
What size drive is that inch pound torque wrench?
Which way does the shim face?
You should of had more light when on the pumpkin, was very hard to see. Thanks for the video
Great job man thank you
What would be the expected cost to have a mechanic and shop to perform this repair?
Different states have different minimum wages, so cost for this repair is different depending upon where you live. Look up shop hrs for this repair and go off the shop hr rate in your area . Say it's a 10hr job. In Massachusetts it's about $100hr and that's mom and pop shop rates. Stealership is a lot more
Great video, probably a dumb question but is the retaining pin sole purpose to keep the axles pushed out holding the c-clamp in place?
Yes. That's its only purpose... C-CLIP not Clamp. I know what you meant though.
And the retaining pin bolt's sole purpose is to break 50% of the time as you attempt initial removal.
Not the end of the world but it does cause excessive alcohol consumption and thrown tools by the mechanic 🤯
Questions, if your just replacing bearings for pinion and carrier then i can use existing shims correct? If yes thank you so much
Yes, use the existing shims
You didn't show how to fet the out bearing on without carrier installed
Should be using red Locktite on those caliper mounting bolts. They tend to come lose and from factory come with red Locktite. Great video!
My inner bearing race is a 4.375 and I can't find it anywhere. Going to try freezing it and praying to God a hammer and 2x4 will push it in😂
Very well explained and done nice work
I can send this now I'm really like is it thank you
You video is like 9/10 just because you forgot to mention sockets sizes 😂 if you wnat to show something you have to show everything not half of the information 😅

Wow I can’t believe how tedious this is. Looks more tedious than a head gasket job omg
G80’s are mechanical lockers they don’t require the additive 🤦♂️🤦♂️ shouldn’t have put that GOV bomb POS back in there in the first place
