Complete, step-by-step guide on how to rebuild a GM 10-bolt rear differential with 8.5" or 8.6" ring gear. This rear end was used in many GM vehicles including Chevy Tahoe, Silverado, Suburban, and Avalanche as well as a handful of RWD cars. It was also used in the Cadillac Escalade as well as the GMC Sierra and Yukon.
You can do this with regular tools, but some specialty tools are required for gear setup as well as making the job easier. Here are some links where you can buy the rebuild kit as well as the special tools:

This is the type of repairs I enjoy. No electronics, just good old reliable mechanical components that are completely rebuildable. I would rather rebuild a diff than chase a misfire. 😂😂😂😂. Great video. Definitely going to sub. 👍👍
Im watching this because my Chevy 2021 Tahoe rear end is being rebuilt at the dealership and want to know what they are doing thank you
Man you are an awesome mechanic.
“I just really like not dying” 😂
22:15. I'm the same way.. I like being the first to fix.. 😢 I know how you feel.. your soo good bro
“ I just really like not dying” …. Same bud lol
Bro thank you, life n money saver 👏👏
Bro I can smell that diff fluid from here.
I have a 2008 suburban 1500 2wd, and I hear some bearing noise in my differential, I notes one of the rear tires has some play when I move the tire, do you think that will be just the bearing of that wheel?
At 10:10 in the video its stated that if not changing the gears you just need to keep the shim stacks in their original places. So, if changing the carrier bearings, it's just a matter of bearing replacement and reassemble with the same shim order?
Yes and no, when the final adjustments are made. You may need to adjust the shim stack
Man. Thank you SO much for this video.
Excellent video! Thanks for posting
Would the oscillating tool by milwaukee be able to cut the bearing without hitting the carrier or pinion?
Splitter bolts are not designed to carry load. You should have rotated the splitter 90 degrees. The splitter body should have spanned the gap, not the bolts.
Any idea if this is similar on the 08+ Avalanche?
Ignore me, all i had to do was listen to the first 15 seconds
Is this the same rear end as the chevy express or savanna?
probably. GM used this 10 bolt for what technically is referred to as " a long ass time"
I have a 17 tahoe rear right shaft moves in and out about 3/8 is that normal?
superhelpful amigo - you are a savior thank you!!
What happened at 3:40? I’m going at mine with hammer and pry bar and getting nowhere.
salutes from Tj 664 I have a 1998 chevy 5.7 silverado the diferential is damage what other vehicle have the same diferential can you tell me please to replace it with another
how do i know if i have 8.5 or 8.6 ring gears? wanted to know before i ordered differential bearing kit. thanks
Check your build codes
Really great video
You had the splitter on the press 90 degrees off. The bolts should have been over the rails
I think you use that bearing splitter the wrong way mi friend
Where are u located
Great video! Are the axle seals leaking in the rear? Looks like that "bigger pry bar" @ 15:50 may have gouged the housing, but maybe I'm seeing something wrong.
It’s been about a year and a half since this rebuild, no issues.
I can't get my c clips out 😭
Smash with a 2x4 it will go in further
@@chickenwinglovers54724lbs sledgehammer eased it out
