I had a tree that I thought was dead. A landscaping guy came over and cut 2/3 of the tree. He left the trunk. I now have a new tree growing out of the center of the tree. Very healthy. This is good because I saved a bunch of money and preserved the tree. Chopping down trees all the time is not the only answer. Good luck. You're doing a nice job!

I would chop down the maple. The more you can do yourself will help with the cost of an arborist. When they come out ask them for suggestions of what to plant in its place! 🥰 When you remove a plant or tree, it's the opportunity to start something new. I'm sorry you're losing these multiple trees though! P.S. don't feel you need to explain about your yard. This is not your full time job, and you have a young child, and also it just doesn't matter!!! I love the perspective of Moya from Garden Addictz. She loves her yard exactly how it is, and she reminds me to love my yard for what it is right now, and not to wait to love it until it looks how I want it to.
That plant is called Mexican Heather. It is hardy and always looks pretty. Gets large. Once the trees start to die, they have to go. They will infect other trees if they have a disease. I lost my plum and pear trees to a fungus and both trees died. You can also plant some purple or pink iceplant on your hills. It grows very fast and will color your entire hill when in bloom. It is great to keep hillsides from eroding.
Sorry if someone already said this, but you may have just harvested your corn too early. The corn silk should be brown before harvest. Give it another go next year. Gardening is a constant learning process. Love hearing about your garden!
Wow what a beautiful garden! You can really see all the hard work you and your family put into it! I'm no expert, but for the diseased tree, I would try to trim all the branches back or off and see if that helps. At least that way the disease won't easily spread to the other trees nearby because there is more space between them. Also, if the damage started from the top, it may be working its way down and you can salvage the tree by saving the healthy parts. Definitely get more opinions though, but good luck!!!

Hey Maria! My husband is an arborist and he thinks you’ll probably have to take that tree down. He said it is most likely sun scorched not diseased, so there may be hope for the neighbouring tree. We love your yard/garden updates!

Maria - I just planted two Japanese blueberry trees. I’m in a drought area as well. They are really nice and can be cut into trees shapes or tall hedges. They are evergreen. You may want to look at those.
My grandpa was a melon farmer. Hardest crop to determine ripeness. He said to wait until you're sure it's ready and then wait two more weeks 😂 Corn is horrible in a home garden too. Don't be too hard on yourself, you're doing great!
I think that the cause of the one tree that is dying, and perhaps the other ones that are already dead was because they were planted too deep. This causes the trunk at the base of the tree to rot. So, you will probably just need to cut it down. I had the same issue with a landscaper-planted maple, and I had to cut it down. It's tricky to plant on a hill, speaking from experience! Make sure that the top of the root ball is at ground level. This will mean you'll need to add soil on the low side to form a berm to hold rain water or irrigated water. Perhaps looking up techniques on how to plant on a slope will help. A picture is worth a thousand words! I also noticed that you planted the ferns right next to the house. If your house needs to be painted in the future, those most likely will be destroyed or have to be transplanted. That may not be a big deal for small annuals or perennials, but be sure to add extra space to keep shrubs away from the house. So, if a shrub has a 3 foot spread at maturity, plant it about 2.5 or 3 feet away from the house (1.5' spread for the side facing the house + 1' space). I hope this helps!
I love your garden updates! It feels somehow warm and cozy and refreshing just to explore it and hear updates. For the corn, I'm not a total expert but I've pollinated corn for a company before, and they expect a lot of loose pollen for a successful pollination. What we do is paper clip a paper bag over the tassel once the anthers are about 2/3's out, and the next day that's hot and sunny we take off the bag and shake the pollen over the silks on the corn. Again not sure if this would fix the problem but it's the most knowledge I have as a gardening novice lol

Maria, the red coleus behind your lambs ear is easy to propagate. You can trim or break stems off, put in a jar of water & within a week you’ll see roots. When the cluster of roots get thick enough just plant in the ground or a pot. I’ve potted many of these, they’re super easy to reproduce! 😊
Ceonothus and pyracantha along your fence for privacy - natives that will bring pollinators, birds, and visual joy. Love that you take an interest in Cal natives. Of note, there are several different strawberry tree varieties - some do better in heat than others. I'm sure well drained soils as well? We love strawberry trees and they are so wildlife friendly. Great job on your yard, it's looking so beautiful. Try herbs as filler plants and leave the flowers - magnets for bees! In particularly, oregano.
Also, yarrow, Cal fuschia, Cal columbine, and best of all Cal Honeysuckle (not japonica!) . Las Pilitas and annie's are great on-line cal native resources. But the most magnificent flowers that need almost zero TLC? California clarkia- they will make your heart sing. Make fabulous bouquets as they resemble orchids.
Can I encourage you to keep composting? The trick is to layer food scraps with yard waste or cardboard. It will get stinky and nasty if you don't layer it. And no one should bother investing in a fancy compost bin. The best I've ever done was with a simple circle of chicken wire inside a circle of cement blocks (okay, it didn't look great). As long as you're layering and giving it time to do it's thing, you can be pretty hands off. 😊💕
I’m so glad you posted an update. I figured since it was fall that we wouldn’t get to see everything until next spring so this was unexpected. I love seeing the difference. The sedum, iceberg roses and purple flowers were my favorite. I’m sorry about your poor trees. It’s too bad you can’t plant redwoods lol. Love you Maria.
Before you chop down the trees, have an arborist come check them out. The heatwave, in my area, greatly effected certain trees. To the point that I thought some were dead, but once it cooled off suddenly new growth appeared. Your garden is still looking beautiful 💗. So sorry about your privacy getting removed by the new neighbors. Hopefully your plants take care of that soon 🤞.
The heatwaves this year seemed to have effected so many gardens! I did have 2 companies check these out, but I didn't know about the maple then yet. And one company was like "Yeah, you can wait a bit on all of them, and cut down only black locust soon" Other company was like "YOU MUST CUT THESE DOWN THIS MONTH, SOMEONE CAN GET KILLED!" I was in such a fear, omg! I ended up asking in local garden groups and people said not to worry much, it all can wait and looks to be ok for a bit. I hate fear mongering sales people! Sorry for the vent 😄

Your gardening is going really well! It's a journey of discovery so enjoy the journey. Have you thought of wiring your fence in places? It's like expaliating... You string wire very tightly and then grow climbing plants, like Chinese jasmine. It's a great way to disguise fences. Sometimes the temptation to plant big trees can backfire when they grow too big or are too hard to care for! All the best with it. I can give you some compost advice another time.
Iris loves to be in water-logged areas (even in ponds) and there are beautiful blue and purple shades. Lobelia is also another beautiful flower that blooms spring to fall and can have beautiful purple foliage and bright blue flowers! Not sure if they are available/appropriate for your area but might be worth looking into :)
Maria, you have done a wonderful job with your yard. I’m so impressed. It’s gorgeous. I am so jealous. I live in Calaveras County. The weather is similar to where you are. However, in my community we have no fences, and the deer are everywhere. While I love them, they eat pretty much everything. I miss all the flowers and color I had in my yard in the Bay Area. Keep up the good work. I’ll look forward to updates. As for the trees you are fearful of losing, maybe just cut off the branches that are dead and see if that helps revive the remainder of those trees.
Maria, I am so enjoying your gardening videos! I started gardening about ten years ago and loved it so much I went back to school and got a degree in horticulture. When arborists inspect trees, one of the big things they are factoring in is whether the tree has a target. If the tree is likely to fall on a house where it can cause damage or hurt people, an arborist is more likely to tell you to remove it. Most of the time, they can try pruning out the diseased and dead wood first, so long as it’s not significantly rotting (I agree with some of the other comments that your trees look heat stressed)…that can buy you a few more years before having to remove the tree. Most of the country went through a drought this year, and people’s plants have been greatly impacted- I have talked to so many people across the US whose plants have struggled this year because of the heat. Also, have you done a soil test to check your pH? Gardenias and blueberries like acidic soil, so if they aren’t doing well in your native soil, growing them in pots is the way to go (it can take a long time to adjust the pH of native soil and the process has to be repeated). Gardening is a beautiful but sometimes heartbreaking process, especially losing trees. It takes trial and error when creating a dream garden, but look how far you’ve come already! Can’t wait to see your garden continue to evolve and reflect your beautiful spirit.

Def give it a hardy trim and see what happens.If all else fails bring in an arborist.When we lived on Vancouver island our maples had issues due to some unusual weather patterns/pests. Called in an expert who figured out the issues and after a heavy chop... They were awesome the next near and our zone there was the same as yours (9) I’m in a 7a now in sw Ontario Canada and we had an AWFUL corn and apple year due to low precipitation and 5 months of heatwave and many of our corn were stunted too.Love the garden being so bee and butterfly friendly and the iceberg roses and salvia are gorgeous! Urggh, we still don't know what can be done. We're thinking of doing a dry river look and digging the drain to go deeper then is it right now, but it's only a theory, once you start digging the result can be completely different, haha!
Truly masterful gardening Maria! I think the maple is salvageable. Here in California, they seem to dramatically cut back trees leaving very little foliage and the tree comes back. So I think they can trim away the dead areas and in a few years you'll be back to enjoying full shade. Thanks for the great video! :o)
So happy to see your salvias w the beautiful white roses and purple combo w all the happy little bees on them. Salvias are so awesome and yours seem to be doing very well. I’ve read purple is actually one of the colors bees are most attracted to so your preference helps them too! Hope you got some good advice for your alder and diseased maple. Maybe there is an arborist amongst your listeners who can help. These things are particularly challenging now w climate change. Had a dogwood tree planted out front of my last house that got fungus from heat stress and I had to use some type of copper bonide spray for it, I think weekly- particularly after rains (as it was washed off after each downpour) but even that can be hard on the environment I imagine - but it did seem to work. I guess it is harder to find trees with a wider range of resiliency for heat and excess water from heavier rains (both seeming to be a consequence of the weather changes we are all experiencing). The only thing I would add if not already mentioned here is water drainage around trees is really important and sprinklers near them are not particularly beneficial as it makes them susceptible to disease after water gets on their bark. They need watered at their base without getting their bark wet as much as possible. Watering the ground out amongst their root line is best. Also wanted to mention your orange coleus is gorgeous next to the chartreuse plant you pointed out. Great combo together. I do think some coleus can get pretty big. So wish they were perennials and not an annual. And your Mexican plant in the container is stellar. Such a smart lady. You’ve learned so much so quickly it seems. You are doing a great job with your property and garden! Thank you for sharing your progress. We all learn from each other.

It's so nice to see the progress, it's going to be amazing as the trees grow and fill out. I hate when neighbours chop things down too, I always plant along boundaries for privacy. I've been in my garden for a while now and it's been a process of learning what will grow well.
It's astounding, the improvement and beauty you've made since your last video. When you start placing bark around, be careful to leave room around the tree trunks so you don't smother them. The trunks need to "breathe."
Your florals are beautiful! 🌻 Corn in general, wasn't great anywhere this summer. Many hit or miss crops especially with the droughts. Keep at it! I enjoyed the garden update from you, Maria!😘
Your garden is looking amazing. You've been working hard. As far as the diseased tree, I advise calling an Arborist. They can give you the best advice. You may not need to cut it down.

Nice garden! Most of your plants are part of the gardening variety were i live as well. Those purple salvia are such bee attractors that i warn customers of our nursery who want to buy them that they are not recommended for people allergic to bee stings. Don't cry over the trees... there are stronger species out there which are no less beautiful. Consider a koelreuteria.
A while ago I did research on how to revitalize a dying potted plant. One of the things they said to do was to remove all of the dead leaves and branches on the plant so the water doesn't go to them, even if it's only a drop of water because every drop counts. It worked for my situation, but I'm not sure if this advice works for trees and the plants/flowers you have, but it seems logical that it would.

I hope this happens to a familial Japanese yew tree at my grandfather’s that we lost to extreme weather - also left the trunk.

You can Make tea with citronella or add it to your black tea! Is amazing. Also it has the cutest tiniest purple flowers ❤️

Your gardening is going really well! It's a journey of discovery so enjoy the journey. Have you thought of wiring your fence in places? It's like expaliating... You string wire very tightly and then grow climbing plants, like Chinese jasmine. It's a great way to disguise fences. Sometimes the temptation to plant big trees can backfire when they grow too big or are too hard to care for! All the best with it. I can give you some compost advice another time.

That citronella could be used as an herb for a natural bug repellent! You could make a salve with it using the parts you trim off :-)
Iris loves to be in water-logged areas (even in ponds) and there are beautiful blue and purple shades. Lobelia is also another beautiful flower that blooms spring to fall and can have beautiful purple foliage and bright blue flowers! Not sure if they are available/appropriate for your area but might be worth looking into :)

Maria, you have done a wonderful job with your yard. I’m so impressed. It’s gorgeous. I am so jealous. I live in Calaveras County. The weather is similar to where you are. However, in my community we have no fences, and the deer are everywhere. While I love them, they eat pretty much everything. I miss all the flowers and color I had in my yard in the Bay Area. Keep up the good work. I’ll look forward to updates. As for the trees you are fearful of losing, maybe just cut off the branches that are dead and see if that helps revive the remainder of those trees.
Maria, I am so enjoying your gardening videos! I started gardening about ten years ago and loved it so much I went back to school and got a degree in horticulture. When arborists inspect trees, one of the big things they are factoring in is whether the tree has a target. If the tree is likely to fall on a house where it can cause damage or hurt people, an arborist is more likely to tell you to remove it. Most of the time, they can try pruning out the diseased and dead wood first, so long as it’s not significantly rotting (I agree with some of the other comments that your trees look heat stressed)…that can buy you a few more years before having to remove the tree. Most of the country went through a drought this year, and people’s plants have been greatly impacted- I have talked to so many people across the US whose plants have struggled this year because of the heat. Also, have you done a soil test to check your pH? Gardenias and blueberries like acidic soil, so if they aren’t doing well in your native soil, growing them in pots is the way to go (it can take a long time to adjust the pH of native soil and the process has to be repeated). Gardening is a beautiful but sometimes heartbreaking process, especially losing trees. It takes trial and error when creating a dream garden, but look how far you’ve come already! Can’t wait to see your garden continue to evolve and reflect your beautiful spirit.
The mulch everywhere will totally change the look and it will be amazing.

They were awesome the next near and our zone there was the same as yours (9) I’m in a 7a now in sw Ontario Canada and we had an AWFUL corn and apple year due to low precipitation and 5 months of heatwave and many of our corn were stunted too.Love the garden being so bee and butterfly friendly and the iceberg roses and salvia are gorgeous! Great job on everything! We live in Texas where the heat is a battle and rain is feast or famine. We are super into our yard so I can relate to the trial and error or new planting. Working in my yard is so therapeutic for me. I think all of your hard work is beautiful!

Urggh, we still don't know what can be done. We're thinking of doing a dry river look and digging the drain to go deeper then is it right now, but it's only a theory, once you start digging the result can be completely different, haha!

Truly masterful gardening Maria! I think the maple is salvageable. Here in California, they seem to dramatically cut back trees leaving very little foliage and the tree comes back. So I think they can trim away the dead areas and in a few years you'll be back to enjoying full shade. Thanks for the great video! :o)
So happy to see your salvias w the beautiful white roses and purple combo w all the happy little bees on them. Salvias are so awesome and yours seem to be doing very well. I’ve read purple is actually one of the colors bees are most attracted to so your preference helps them too! Hope you got some good advice for your alder and diseased maple. Maybe there is an arborist amongst your listeners who can help. These things are particularly challenging now w climate change. Had a dogwood tree planted out front of my last house that got fungus from heat stress and I had to use some type of copper bonide spray for it, I think weekly- particularly after rains (as it was washed off after each downpour) but even that can be hard on the environment I imagine - but it did seem to work. I guess it is harder to find trees with a wider range of resiliency for heat and excess water from heavier rains (both seeming to be a consequence of the weather changes we are all experiencing). The only thing I would add if not already mentioned here is water drainage around trees is really important and sprinklers near them are not particularly beneficial as it makes them susceptible to disease after water gets on their bark. They need watered at their base without getting their bark wet as much as possible. Watering the ground out amongst their root line is best. Also wanted to mention your orange coleus is gorgeous next to the chartreuse plant you pointed out. Great combo together. I do think some coleus can get pretty big. So wish they were perennials and not an annual. And your Mexican plant in the container is stellar. Such a smart lady. You’ve learned so much so quickly it seems. You are doing a great job with your property and garden! Thank you for sharing your progress. We all learn from each other.

Im sure you’ve heard of this but the app Picture This. It costs annually but it’s been sooo helpful. Take a picture of any plant and it gives you everything you need to know, planting zones, care, information etc. Amazing stuff!

It's so nice to see the progress, it's going to be amazing as the trees grow and fill out. I hate when neighbours chop things down too, I always plant along boundaries for privacy. I've been in my garden for a while now and it's been a process of learning what will grow well.

It's astounding, the improvement and beauty you've made since your last video. When you start placing bark around, be careful to leave room around the tree trunks so you don't smother them. The trunks need to "breathe."

Nice garden! Most of your plants are part of the gardening variety were i live as well. Those purple salvia are such bee attractors that i warn customers of our nursery who want to buy them that they are not recommended for people allergic to bee stings.
Don't cry over the trees... there are stronger species out there which are no less beautiful. Consider a koelreuteria.

A while ago I did research on how to revitalize a dying potted plant. One of the things they said to do was to remove all of the dead leaves and branches on the plant so the water doesn't go to them, even if it's only a drop of water because every drop counts. It worked for my situation, but I'm not sure if this advice works for trees and the plants/flowers you have, but it seems logical that it would.
