  • Thank you for continuing to watch us try and update our backyard! We've been slowing working on our side yards for the past couple of weeks. As anything good in life it takes a lot of time and preparation to start and finish it, while keeping a toddler interested (LOL). In the next video I'll show you our final look. Zone 9b

as a professional gardener i think you and darryl and mila are doing great! very good choice to go with cardboard instead of landscaping fabric. i really hate that fabric with a passion lol. the mulch looks super even so props to darryl!! and all your ideas are sound and sensible for your terrain and microclimate. i can't wait to see the reveal in your next vid!

Glad to know you went with cardboard instead of the fabric. I hate that stuff. I learned the hard way a few years ago the fabric is a nightmare and should never be used. I’m still finding that crap all over. I’m zone 5b so I don’t have much other advice except to buy and grow native plants, plants that are good for droughts. Gardening is full of trials and tribulations. I’ve cried many times out of frustration and anger and yet I keep doing it year after. I love it.

If you can get wood chips just keep dumping a good depth of them onto the card board and it will break down to the softest and most amazing soil .. mulch is nice but the wood chips give you a soil .. never dig or till again when you get started .. permaculture produces an amazing garden with very very little weed control maintenance .. you're going to have a paradise in that yard :) good job kids .

A native plant you might consider that attracts hummingbirds is California fuschia (Epilobium canum). Does well in dry conditions, will grow into a ground cover, and is a beautiful native plant.

Hi Masha, I think you probably won't get this, but I have been watching you since you used to live in MD/VA/DC! I grew up in that area so would follow along. I now have a baby and am doing some hardcore gardening this year as well! So therapuetic and grounding, helps to make me feel centered with everything going on with work and family and the world. I also bought the Grandpa's weeder you had mentioned and it works hilariously well. It is way too much fun (I think I am getting old!)! Sending you and your family lots of love.

That shady side yard is probably perfect for hot days, especially eating outside. Couple benches, some solar powered small fountains - one lady made one on RUclips with a $15 solar pump with long cord. The small solar panel could be mounted on fence/roof if cord is long enough. Great lawn golf area to play too.

What is it about hummingbirds-whenever one shows up in our garden everyone in the house drops what they’re doing to watch it 😂 they’re just magical I think.
On that hill on the side with the wisteria-maybe some drought tolerant shrubs or clumping grasses to help with any runoff issues (if that’s a problem)? We have a deep slope like this that we are still working on but those have helped a bit with the soil situation. Also letting wildflowers grow-a lot of the ones that we consider weeds in the yard are actually great nitrogen fixers.

You need to put clay balls and a drainage blanket, before placing the earth in the pot, to drain the earth. So the roots don’t rot over time.

Hi Maria, Crika F. meant in the flower pot that you re-potted your plant you should put the clay balls, etc. to make sure the water can drain out of the pot properly and not drown the plant's roots. She wasn't talking about the shady side yard project. Good job on all of the projects, though, everything is going to look great!🪴

Hello Gardener Girl Marsha, it's Old Dave again. How are your nails holding up? Your hair still looks great, but your un-madeup look is quite striking (when I've only seen the vlogger girl at her beautiful best) LOL. But it's so good to see you out as a family, digging in the dirt.
    Congratulations Darrel on pitching in.
I have been lamenting the arrival of Spring because, I actually am old and I've gotten out of shape 'cause I've been sitting around all Winter, except for a 1-mile walk every day and stretching exercises every night, so being in my production nursery (I grow perennials for resale) with the rototiller and a shovel for the last 4 days has made my body really soar. When I put the beds down for the Winter last Fall I was hoping lots of stuff would die over our severe Winter months. But here I am rearranging the layout to better protect from the deer which have their favorites, they were in the vegetable garden night before last leaving tracks all around. This is Minnesota and the night time temps are still below freezing and we haven't had a 60 deg. day yet this year.
Looking forward to seeing your yard project as it develops. Bye for now..............................Old Dave
