Hey Maria! I would suggest planting plants that favor wet conditions. I would suggest finding plants that are native to California as they are adapted to the climate and soil conditions out there. There are plants like sedges that will provide a nice green hillside or you can also get flowering plants as well. It will help stabilize the soil and prevent erosion. If you happen to have a spot where water is dripping down into an open space you can try to install a rain barrel underneath to collect the water and repurpose it for all you plants in the garden.

Born and raised Californian here... be wary with the rattlers. Western Diamondbacks are native to the region and can be very aggressive. Their bite is deadly, especially if they're on the younger side. This looks more like a snakeskin than a snake carcass, so definitely keep and eye out, and you guys should refrain from wandering around the bushes and rocks on that hill around dawn/dusk. It's their natural habitat, so if there's one, there's bound to be more... ESPECIALLY if there's a water source.

Yes! Here in SoCal my mom was trimming some flowers and was bitten by a young rattler. Thankfully he had just eaten and so had very little venom. We have to be so careful around bushes and plants 😬

Ok, I had a message from a local snake guy, he said it's a dead pacific rattlesnake. But now I wonder why it died, may be froze at night during a cold night? Either way, you guys thank you for your comments, I'm feeling like we might need to take all the vining plants out of the hill eventually to keep pests a bit tamed and dig out a well of sorts. We do have french drain but as you see it's not draining enough water. We'll start contacting different professionals as you suggested and see what can be done here. 💖 Thank you for your suggestions and feedback!!!

They are arboreal snakes, so being wrapped around the branch might be to make itself feel safe. Snakes of course eat rodents but they will be interested in those duck eggs too. If you have close neighbors, maybe they left rat poison out and the snake ate a poisoned rat? Unless it was a former pet I don't believe weather should have bothered a healthy snake. Ticks in the Midwest where I'm at are bad and can prey on snakes too if you have those. Can never rule out trauma like hit by car or predators. Only things I can think of as a cat/dog nurse 😅

Could you just go along with what your yard is trying to do and accentuate it? Make the areas with standing water into a “running creek” through your yard. It might not be as “usable” as you would like. But might look nice! Look at Pinterest and RUclips for “backyard water features” and “diy backyard creek”.

Exactly what I was going to say! Definitely a shed snake skin by the looks of it. For the standing water, you could possibly plant eucalyptus trees? The only problem is they grow pretty big and shed lots of leaves and branches can be dangerous falling in strong winds. However they’re very effective. The Israelis planted heaps of them to drain swamp land. As an Australian, I felt right at home when I visited Israel! I would personally get rid of any vegetation that could conceal snakes and although they’re cute, get rid of the ducks too. Good luck 😊

Maria! Long time fan here. ♥️As for the standing water (coming from a wetlands/environmental management specialist) don’t add any plastic or “holding” tank! Let the earth and soil continue to absorb and distribute that water. Plant native, water-loving plant species that can create a “marshy” area that will contain and utilize the water source. The roots of the plants will help to hold the soil in place and reduce saturation in your yard. (Willows, ferns, dogwoods, iris, and big-leaf maples are some plants to consider.) Hope this helps! :)

I lived in a place with the same water issue to the point I had crawdads living in my yard! Bedrock acted as a gutter system dumping all the rain water downhill into my yard all year. I dug a cistern on the largest flow. That water was pumped to the garden. This still left boggy areas though so I used plants with high water needs to absorb the water like cattails, elephant ear, day lilies, etc. It still wasn't perfect but I managed to reclaim most of the land. I had enough land I just planted & let them go wild (really fast growers lol) but it might be a problem for you. Good luck 🤞 I know how frustrating it is

Different methods of Groundwater control and dewatering
    1. Sump pumping - The most basic form of groundwater control is sump pumping, which is simply a method where groundwater is collected using a sump and pumped away from the site. This type of groundwater control can be inexpensive, but ground loss as well as excessive seepage can be time consuming and expensive to deal with. Pre-drainage methods may be used for situations where sump pumping may pose a threat to the instability of the ground or adjacent structures.
    2. Wellpoint systems - These are used to lower groundwater levels and help provide safe working conditions during excavation. Wellpoint systems consist of a number of small diameter wells, which are connected with a header pipe to a wellpoint pump. The wellpoint pump then creates a vacuum that draws water up from the ground.
    3. Siphon draining - works by pumping water by gravity along siphon pipes. Siphon draining is most often used where there are unstable slopes. Wells are typically installed in or above the unstable zone of a slope and are then pumped using siphons that utilize the natural slope of the area.
    4. Deep well systems - consist of a number of bored wells, each using a submersible borehole pump. As water is pumped from each well, the groundwater is lowered creating a cone of depression.
    5. Ejector systems - Similar to deep well systems, ejector systems are based on wells which lower the groundwater level to provide safe working conditions. Ejectors utilize air in the wells to create a vacuum that draws water out of the soil.

My son checked on cost of a well recently, 30k approximately. Also, ducks are cute but nobody wants the duck poop which is a mess and draws flies. Those ducks have laid eggs somewhere there before and that’s what makes them return every time they want to lay a new clutch of eggs. I have to scare them away from landing in our pool. We just set rat traps out and gopher traps out. My husband tells me my tomato plants are feeding them. If you find gopher snake don’t kill it as they eat the rodents and are harmless to humans. Rattlesnake is a different story. Sounds like you already have French drains installed. Maybe they are clogged? It happens.

As someone who has grown-up in the deep south, I am wayyy too familiar with them. The number one rule in the south, if there's one snake, there's another.
They are gonna be super attracted to that water source and most active during dusk/dawn. I don't know anything about the laws in California, but 'down' here, yearly snake treatments are basically an unofficial requirement. If you aren't allowed or just don't feel comfortable putting down 'Snake-A-Way' or 'Snake B Gon', one of the things we did was plant several flowers that naturally deter snakes and that has helped a lot.

Try moth balls to keep snakes away. My mom has been using them around her yard for years and hasn't seen a snake since. You can also use Irish spring soap bars to keep bugs away. Just cut them up and throw them around your yard especially where water is standing. You can also put some pieces of the same soap in penny hoses. Hang them by your doors and/or security cameras too.

Looks like you’ve got a spring in your yard! A natural spring, but as some people said, plants some trees that enjoy water and it’ll fix most of the problem :)

The good news is that there is an ecosystem going on. The ducks like the water, and the mice and rats will be food for the snakes. Everybody will be happy. I suggest getting an outdoor cat that will eat the mice and scare them away. Maybe consider getting a couple of them? And if you can consult someone to reroute the water to your garden beds, that would be ideal. The rattlesnakes are probably there because of the mice too, lol.

ducks are super cute, last year we had a couple of duck families (with about 8 babies each) that would come by our property. we went overboard on feeding them extra birdseed outside of what dropped naturally from the feeders... that led in a bunch of geese which we did not want since they’re mean and poop everywhere. try to cover your tomato plants if you haven’t already as our ducks went after ours!!

If you can find a source for the water then you could definitely reroute it to collect it or divert it, but if it’s just a mysterious swamp situation, I’d plant a lot of water loving plants or trees to drink it up! You could still focus on natives, but find ones that drink a lot. Love this content! ☺️

My late brother in law was a plumber, you wouldnt think a plumber could help, but he would get out his dowel rods to find the flowing source so he could re-route a natural spring more effectively. Maybe you can find a plumber like that. Good luck! 🧡

I live with ducks since I live on a lake, and they'll pair bond through the mating season. They'll leave after the babies are old enough. I don't have a fence, so I don't have to worry about them getting stuck in my yard, but they might need some help if they wanna relocate with their family after the babies are born, so you might have to show them how to be free through a gate or something. The babies are typically too small to fly when they're ready to go. Ducks are relatively harmless honestly.
I help relocate ducks through a school when they are ready to be out in the open again 😂 (they typically nest in a courtyard in the center of the building). It's pretty painless.

Hi there, Masha! Enjoyed your video as always. And as a former planner worked at the city, I would suggest don’t dig before you consult with the city’s planning&permitting department. They would very possibly love your idea about recollecting and reusing the swamp and would advise you if you have some ideas on how to develop it. They would probably want to see the topography and have some water runoff analysis depending on the scale of work you are planning. Hope this garden work goes well!!

We have had the exact same problem, we had to do an extensive French drain. We put a dry creek bed above it and that worked. You're moving in the right direction, tie it into that green drain you showed us.

I would suggest contacting a landscape designer/architect OR
the University of California extension service. They should be able to advise you about the water issue.

Hey lady. As a cosmetologist I recommend that natural wave for sure. Get some Moroccan(this is the pro brand) argan oil (pricey and worth it) and use a couple drops after u shampoo, it's very light weight, not greasy at all and it will define waves and calm frizz. I use it and absolutely adore it. As for your part, most cannot pull off a middle part, but u can. The shape of your face allows it. Also a zig zag part may be fun to try.
Ok so the snake and rat thing, YIKES!!! I'm terrified of 🐀 rats. And snakes are not much better. I'd have to move lol you are brave. If it was my back yard, I'd wanna level it more get rid of the huge rocks and such. But that's just me. I think your doing a fine job so far. If u need any beauty tips on your hair I'm here to help. Thank you for all that you do with your amazing asmr videos. You are the best at your craft

So interesting to follow. Water, animals, your own jungle with a natural spring. Spiritually it feels as such a furtile healthy flowing representation of your innerwork. And you have no control over the situation. The surrender it almost forces up on you. It looks like you are working together with the universe to create a managable situation for you and your family AND natures powers. ❤️

Masha, the "rattlesnake" that you found was actually a rattlesnake SKIN. The rattlesnake that it belonged to is not dead, it was simply shedding its skin. They do this every time they grow. Most likely, it was using the stick that you found it wrapped around to help it to shed the skin by providing friction. Please be careful in your back yard with Mila, Daryl and yourself, especially if you are walking around on that hill where there is plenty of vegetation and rock for snakes to hide in. The hill in your back yard is actually a very good habitat for snakes of all kinds.

I agree with the comment about building a well or a dry well. Also, I live in south Texas and have seen plenty of rattlesnakes, and that looks shedded skin, unfortunately. Rattlesnakes and rats live in colonies so there's probably more in your backyard. Sometimes new construction in the area can stir them up and the fact that you have lots of vegetation and water means they are using your yard as a refuge. Might consider calling pest control for a second opinion about the snakes and rats.

maybe make like a french drain? If you can dig deep enough maybe place a rain collector like a barrel with small holes to have the water draw into the barrel and then put a pump on it to a garden hose to put on your plants
