    Hi! My name is Loretta, a girl from the U.S. who moved to Japan! I'm here on the MEXT scholarship program as a graduate student, studying to get a Masters in Business Administration. Here are some answers to common questions:
    1. Do I Speak Japanese? Yep! I was taught formally in High School and have been speaking now for over 15 years.
    2. What are you studying? I'm a recent grad of Yokohama National University's "Masters of Business Administration" Program
    3. How old are you?: Year of the dragon. :D The math is up to you.
    4. How did you get into Japanese school?: tinyurl.com/yb8yylch
    5. What camera equipment do you use?: I film my videos with a Canon 60D using a 30mm Sigma Art Lens and I edit with Sony Vegas Pro 10 (with some help from photoshop). Additional cameras include GoPro Hero 7 Black and DJI Majic Air

    I didn't start learning Japanese until I dumped all the English speaking teachers, who are teaching Japanese. DO NOT learn romanji go directly to hiragana, romanji is a thorn in your side it will not help you learn Japanese.

    • @acelakid94
      @acelakid94 4 года назад +3

      Yeah, if you’re really serious about learning Japanese then the only thing romaji will help with is knowing the sound of the kana. Although I’m sure there are many apps that teach you kana with sound alone so you don’t have to use romaji.

    • @user-dz1kb3xf4t
      @user-dz1kb3xf4t 4 года назад +6

      @@acelakid94 Yeah that's the best way especially if you're a native English speaker as seeing romaji sometimes will make you pronounce it in an 'English' way rather than how it's supposed to be pronounced. A lot in my Japanese class had this issue.

    I’ve always liked Rosetta Stone and have used it on and off over the years. I have some critiques- they advertise it as a one stop resource to get you fluent in a language but it’s not that at all (nothing is). People who have actually gone though the lessons (without being forced to by someone else) have much stronger speaking and listening skills than their peers from what I’ve seen in beginner Korean class. I used the Japanese version a little bit before switching to a traditional classroom method (it was more expensive then and I couldn’t just buy a lifetime membership). I hadn’t revisited Rosetta Japanese since then. I have to say they speak SLOWLY. But it’s natural - not someone speaking normally and then they use a computer to slow it down which sounds lame and I’ve seen elsewhere. The speech recognition engine has been **** for a number of years but their new version of the website is actually doing it pretty well to where I would say it’s actually useful. The iPhone app is better than the old Flash technology one but not as good as the current website as you demonstrated in your video your pronunciation is superb and way better than any beginner but it wasn’t giving you full credit. Also, I don’t get why after all these years they still have 5 levels for (popular) languages but not Japanese and Korean? I get the other languages are more popular and get priority but they made these programs many years ago and haven’t updated them since - they’ve had time to make Japanese levels 4 and 5 by now! Anyway, I’m one of the polyglots wannabes that actually like Rosetta Stone and I’m glad you liked it too.

    This was the video I needed to dive in more. It's hard to immerse myself in Missouri, nobody speaks bloody Japanese out here, but I can talk to myself. I'm already a lunatic, may as well sound like it too right? I just bought Rosetta Stone Lifetime, I sincerely appreciate the advice. I've put a little over a year into Japanese. I know the meanings of the 2300 kanji, but the readings for n5 and n4, still studying the others. Thank you for confirming this takes hard work and there's not an easy button. I've been working my ass off to get where I am and right when it seems like I'm not learning anything, I'll catch a phrase in an anime that I didn't know before (日常が大好きだぞ。)or I'll understand lyrics in a song RADWIMPS that I didn't get before. Keep going guys, the effort is worth it! Fall back in love with the language if you get discouraged!

    Thanks Loretta. Great review. I needed to hear that. I bought the Rosetta Stone app, and I became frustrated because I did not know what they were talking about at all.... ever. This made me stop using it, and begin exploring other ways to learn Japanese. Before I knew it, my 2 years had expired, and I had hardly used it. Now they roll out the Life-time for the same amount of money. I had previously invested ( and I am more confident from using other apps). I feel like I am very doubtful I would ever pay Rosetta Stone more money.

I'm even embarrassed to tell people how long I've been learning it, especially when talking to natives because I just can't express myself the way I want to. It's even more frustrating because I understand a lot but can't answer. So I'll definitely start an audio diary and talk more to myself in Japanese lol

    We are never too old to learn or too young to teach. Good teaching is not about having the right certification or knowing how to answer every question. It is about providing a space and structure and encouragement to help others learn because leaning alone is tough… It is about loving your subject and sharing it with others to help them pursue their own passion!!!❤️

    That wikipedia tip is genius! I’ve had a lot of problems with trying to find the keyword of what I’m searching on my Japanese youtube. So my tip of a searchable word is 絵本 (えほん, Ehon) which is picture book, because I love finding a read aloud of a Japanese picture book for my daily practice. I had a lot of problems before searching ‘children book.’ It sometimes got me results, but not exactly what I was thinking. I finally found the right word for what I was thinking from reading Yotsuba, but I’m excited to find more words with the wikipedia hack. :D

    Now I make some videos in Japanese and English, and I try to talk to people too.

I was deployed to Japan and I am just enamored but I want to know more of the language cause for me it is like a sign of respect, I visit your country and I'd like further appreciate everything about the culture if I knew the language. I wish it was easy to learn the languages but it's not easy. I'm Vietnamese but I don't know my own language so I always feel sad about that. 😲 I hadn’t noticed they changed the app around until this video. Now Im excited that I can try all the languages and not just to two I had 🤩 but still need to just stay focused on my Japanese so I don’t get too confused. 😅

    I hope this stuff helps someone but I've found:
    Naomi's videos have Japanese CC too which help with picking up what she said. You can adjust the speed on RUclips too, even on mobile since it's most likely too fast
    You can also change the lanuage region on your Netflix so you can see the shows that are translated into Japanese, like a lot of originals have Japanese dubs. Shows like Good Place where I've seen it many times so I know what's going on and I can turn off subs (the Japanese subs aren't what the JP dubs say and are more like translations of the English script). Of course you can also watch anime, but if you change the language you can add JP subs as well. Not all shows have it but one's I've found so far with them are Aggretsuko ( they talk SO fast, slow them down if on mobile), Kill La Kill, Angel Beats, the Irregular at Magic High School. I find that if I have English subs, even if I've watched the show before, my eyes go to the Eng subs and I end up not listening to the actual dialogue and learning anything.

    I personally use a balance between Memrise which uses native speakers in videos, and drills words, phrases, and sentences to you. And I also use LingoDeer which works similarly to Rosetta Stone. And at the end of every lesson, is a listening, and speaking part that you have to pass, and at the end, can listen to others who use the app. I've also downloaded HelloTalk to speak with foreigners, but I've been afraid to use it and I don't know why. I type the Japanese that I know on my Instagram, along with the semi-translated English below. I changed the language on my Instagram account to Japanese, my RUclips Location is in Japan, and when I visited, I made Japanese friends including my Airbnb host that I talk to as regularly as I can. I've been self-learning since Thanksgiving 2018, and since I've been learning natively, I feel it helps me connect better with a lot of the slang and shorthand I see on Instagram.
    Also, for the RUclips account I suggest, since I'm into cars, I watch KP Garage: ruclips.net/channel/UCReLl7djAZraKGApraWg6Ng
    They are native speaking, and embed Japanese subtitles on every video, and I shadow them as much as possible! I am hoping to move soon so learning as much as I can helps!

      KP garage! I did some design work for an auto company here and we watched that channel a lot when researching social media campaigns😂 Small world!
      Sounds like you're really taking your language journey head on. I used HelloTalk but it always devolved into a Tinder-esque experience for me😫. Hopefully you'll have better luck finding language partners as gungho as you are!❤️

    Hello!! I wanted to say first that I really love your videos and they're very helpful for trying to figure out how to study Japanese. I was really wanting to learn the language due to I love the culture but I'm also hoping that one day I get to work for Game Freak. With that being said I have looked into Rosetta Stone and I compared your discount with the original pricing and your discount works for the unlimited lifetime bundle that includes coaching in which that is a coach or tutor/trainer that you get to actually speak with for lessons and I wasn't sure if you've tried that one before? I don't know how new it is but comparing the different prices I'd say it's really new considering that your description says for the $199 but it only works on the $299 bundle and it's dropped to 249. In general the 199 is scratched off and it is 179 and this is before your discount (they must have a deal going on haha) but I was just curious if it is more better with having the training coach added in as well? Thank you for your feedback!!!

    I use Rosetta Stone! I think that you can get some reading skills with it. I've found that my reading ability has gone up since using it. The only downside I have with Rosetta Stone is that the learning curve is really steep. I think that knowing hiragana and katakana before starting Rosetta Stone is a must. Also, using a translator for words you don't know that they're teaching you is also really helpful. I'm slowly learning Kanji from it, too. Since I saw that video with Akkie talking about reading the furigana I turned off the furigana option to kanji only and now I'm getting better at recognizing and reading kanji.

      I am having similar feelings feels like its more tailored to people who already have some experience speaking it a little bit. The lack of seeing the direct meaning of the word/sentence what they are learning you can be a little bit confusing I know they use pictures so you kinda get the gist of it XD but you are never 100% certain. or maybe I am missing something. with duolingo at least you can click on the word sentence and see the context of it. so am just combining both atm.

    Hi Loretta! I just started to learn Japanese (about 2-3 weeks in). I'm using a combination of the app Human Japanese and the genki books. Would the Rosetta app be a good way to compliment my study? My goal is to eventually be fluent enough in Japanese to be able to keep a casual conversation in Japanese.
