A few years ago my brother gave me a sweatshirt as a present with "日本語を勉強しています。話しかけてください" written on it. It was such a blessing when I got to Japan, because native speakers smiled or laughed at me (not in the wrong way) but actually talked to me. I was so happy! So I suggest getting and wearing one of those funny clothes with japanese sentences they really help.

I love these tips! Some of them really do highlight that "You don't have to be perfect, the point of language learning is to communicate. So it's okay if you don't know EVERYTHING you encounter. Focus on what matters to you." Thank you for these!

These were some really good tips and some I already use, so it felt a little validating lol. I have to keep telling myself when I encounter new vocab "you don't need to remember every single word you learn. You don't have to be perfect. If i stay consistent those words will come up and you will learn them in context later in your studies".

For real!! It's so hard to move past new vocab, but I love that mantra you tell yourself. We'll come across those words again! @cupcake32009

yES KATAKANA YES YES. Thank you. I'm thoroughly convinced that any beginner (without a kanji background) benefits the most from learning katakana first. And yet they end up learning hiragana first, not understanding a word of what they're reading, an when they finally progress to katakana, they've gotten so used to hiragana that katakana overwhelm them. That's such a waste. I could only read katakana for YEARS (before I seriously started learning Japanese) and they were enough for me to navigate Japanese shopping websites easily.
Also, I can confirm immediately showing a room of Japanese people that you can speak Japanese really helps with integrating into the group.

As someone trying to learn Japanese, with a 1 year old, and starting a YT channel, super useful for this to come out on Feb 1st to keep the waning momentum new years resolutions going. Loved tip #2 for my Japan trip coming up in a few weeks. Tip #3's labelling was veto'd by my wife XD. I can also imagine your thoughts with the autofocus ~I have 2 babies, I don't have time to rerecord~. Glad that you kept it moving to put out great content as always!

I’m trying to immerse myself more with Netflix and RUclips… my kids’ books. And I just cracked open the texts from page 1 again to refresh and remember. (My degree is in Japanese ffs and my head is like 🤯 empty)
You’d think it would be a lot easier, since I live with a Japanese person 😂 but he’s not nice about corrections and I also have 3 gremlins that refuse to accept the gospel of nihongo.
I know for me, it’s pretty much all useless until I’m back in Japan, sink or swim.
Thank you for the motivation to keep going and trying in the meantime!

I've been practicing your tip #2 of don't forget to speak first. There's a lot of Japanese restaurants in my area so I thought it'd be a great place to practice some Japanese. To my surprise, many Japanese restaurants are owned and staffed by Chinese and Korean people. Not all of them speak Japanese but sometimes I'm able to practice Japanese and it's been really great!

Dear Loretta, I saw your kids childcare book, and I never have seen how it is called. Even in doramas appears, but I looked into the textbooks and it don't appear. My question is: How is called that notebook that writes the teacher and the parents on it to communicate?
Is mandatory only to childcare facilities or to even to elementary school?

Awesome video! Question though: what is リカちゃん?Is that the dictionary app that was mentioned? How does it differ from a learning app like LingQ? Are they isomorphic?
I use a lot of this app to help me learn new words, and I'm not sure if this gradual hallucination you speak of in the sixth point will just magically work for me if I continue reading 魔女の宅配便 without some assistance. Although, you do make an excellent point in that I don't practice a lot of top-down, look-and-assess reading practice with Japanese. I guess I should practice sight reading things cold turkey now and again. I want that magic you speak of.

I’m currently in the process of re-learning Japanese since I haven’t used it actively in seven years. 😅 In college we used Genki, which never really clicked. So I’m starting over using the Japanese From Zero series. At least to get started again. Eventually I’ll use italki for further practice.❤
