Permanent residency for folks like you is well deserved in my opinion. You really put in the time and effort to learn the language and culture. It's amazing as I remember watching way back in 2011 😂
@@MyLittleGreenHairdedMermaid That's one of many things many people seem to believe but the truth is very different, actually almost the opposite in this case. Google "Becoming Japanese (Full Interview)" + "Life Where I'm From X" or "Becoming legally Japanese nationality / citizenship information - in English!"
Loretta, your channel is one of the best Ambassadors bridging Japan and its culture with US/Western audiences. Definitely highlight it in your PR application! We love the bits of Japanese we learn from you, from the names of things and body language, to the things to see and experience outside of the major tourist areas. For instance, you video about Narita town was quite enlightening and made us reconsider using Haneda exclusively. Did you let slip multiple "little ones"? Kyde Marshall and Eric Klein from the channel kyde & eric got PR a couple of years ago and I am sure they would be delighted to discuss their experience with you and Boomer. All the best and we are excited for the new year with you!
Hi Loretta, I started watching your videos when I just had N2 in my home country. 5 years later, now I am a Seishain with N1 and an HSP visa. You are an inspiration, especially as someone who moved to Japan in their 30s with a non-Japanese spouse. I am thinking of joining a club on jimoty or volunteering with activo to boost the “ties to Japan” portion of the PR application. Hope you can find something fun that resonates with you (Maybe that involves fellow parents)? Good luck with your mission toward PR!
@kemushichan I learned about it through blogs and RUclips when thinking about moving to Japan (not wanting to wait ten years for PR). I wasn't eligible at the time but set about an entire multi-year action plan (got N1 in my home country, did a part-time/online Japanese MBA for 35 points, got a 3-year visa through JET) and got lucky with +10 points for my old university, +10 points for "innovation" from working for a Japanese startup, and the rest is age/experience. Zero salary-related points 🥲but it magically all worked out! Hope more people can learn about and apply for it!
Friday! (Also, oddly, the previous video was never shown to me. I had no idea there had been one.) On music and marching bands, perhaps taiko? Though always say follow your heart for hobbies. Even if it doesn't seem to make sense why, if it draws your interest in, that's all that matters. A hobby shouldn't turn into a chore.
The permanent residency needing residence tax receipts thing - I just found that out as well 😅 Love any tips from longer term residents like this though! Also for days of the week, Sunday-Wednesday for me! Thursday-Saturday I often have plans/am out of the house for whatever reason, so I usually watch RUclips the most on weeknights at the start of the week
I’m actually doing a whole slew of documentaries this year based on the culture and local artisans! But getting into DIY is apart of the journey I would love to see you dive into
Fridays are great. I too need to find a new hobby. If it were me in Japan it would be a traditional craft that I’d love to learn - washi paper, mizuhiki, boro, sashiko. My dream is to do a craft tour of Japan.
I have a PR in Japan and did the application paperwork all by myself. I would say, if one is a corporate employee with a regular salary, pays tax and has no criminal record, the Japanese government will give the PR as long as all required documents are submitted. For freelancers, that could get a bit tricky. The "contribution to Japan" requirement is optional for applicants who are sei-sha-in. However, if a freelance applies for PR, the "contribution to Japan" requirement would heavily translate into concrete proof such as academic paper, publications and some sort of key position in an organisation that is closely related to Japan (and like what you said newspaper clipping, but one or two clippings would not be much of help unfortunately).
For personal hobbies, I always thought sashiko embroidery is kind of cool, how it used to be an artistic way of repairing and upcycling worn clothing. Real cool patterns too.
zomg the unexpected pinpon at 0:40! I had to check my doorbell video to make sure no one was there LOL.. best of luck with all your plans for this year~! I plan to apply for permanent residency at the end of this year, myself.. hopefully smooth sailing, but we shall see.
In month 7 of painful, painful job hunting after graduating with a master's backed by MEXT so I am definitely looking forward to your upcoming job experience video, I would love if you have any tips or say early warning signs for toxic workplaces, what to look out for. Job hunting tips in general would be a godsend in my hour of need but I'm not sure that's the orientation you want to take that video talking about your personal experiences. Either way, super excited to see you back in action! あけましておめでとうございます!
You mentioned a lot of interesting topics and many time you said you will do a separate video about it soon. please do so!!!! I still remember the promised video of job hunting 😢😢😢
Kudo would be a great hobby for you! Do not be intimidated by the size of the bow, it is about the same pull back tension as a western bow. I have done both and the only difference was how to aim and your stance. This is just my personal opinion of course! Best of luck.
If I jump in I will legit search out this comment and report back. Honestly, my posture is so shrimpy curl cursed recently I feel like it'd be a good idea to do something like kyudo
Hi! I'm new here. Just got recommended this video. I loved the vibe. I studied Japanese for three years in school and then after I did independent translation for a while. After I fell out of the hobby I was translating for, it's been harder to keep up with Japanese. I still love the language and the culture, some I'm glad I have been getting recommended new channels like this recently. Looking forward to all that you have in store, and hoping to look through your older videos!
If you're interested in getting back into music and looking for something more Japanese I highly recommend trying out Taiko drumming! I'm in a group in the states and it's super fun!
I would LOVE if you picked up and showcased Kyūdō! I had the chance to watch some sessions at a cultural centre in Canada, and also saw it in Kyoto once. It is a fascinating martial art to me, not learned for self defence [cause who carries a bow around with them all the time], but more a mental art. Thank you for the update.
Glad to see the video months later & hear your lovely voice! Life is getting busy so I'm not in a rush for the videos to arrive. Fridays to Sundays work better for me since 2 of those days I rest more from working. Slowly putting some studying time (as in review from what I already learned) for Japanese again. I'm trying to not be too hard on myself since I do have to study for some upcoming tests for my career
Depends on the length. If documentary length then the weekend is better but I literally don't care. I'll eventually watch ur vids on some day. I think it's more a question of what works for your schedule.
あけおめ~ I enjoy Wed and Friday for YT videos, but I also have a more flexible work life so I'm often watching YT in the BG. It's funny how this video came up during an interesting time with me. I started watching your channel back in 2014, when I was in undergrad and had received a Gilman scholarship to study abroad in Japan. I did a semester abroad in 2015 and then again (also to Japan) in 2017 because I loved it so much. Then I felt a lot of pressure to not really continue my studies, because I think I could not really imagine me (at the time) living and working in Japan. Of course, now I'm much older and definitely want to make it happen. I'm working as an attorney in NYC, but I'm not too happy here. And I realized a lot of imposter syndrome really held me back. Anyway, I won't ramble for much longer, but I am excited to see you back and healthy, and am very excited for new videos. Who knows, maybe I'll meet you IRL in Tokyo. Thank you for continuing to make videos for us.
i think i prefer Friday because is easier if I miss it I have Saturday and Sunday as well. I really want to see videos about the language as I try to study on my own and I even started this channel in order to motivate me to study more but I don't have time with everything else that is going on with my life. have a good day!! :)
I already have my own, the documents and conditions were difficult, but somehow my wife and I overcame the situation. Normally in japan you need at least 10 years to apply permanent residency but if you are married with japanese person it would be 3 years to apply it
Omfg this video brings me back SOOOOOOOOOOO FAR. I can't believe how many years it has been and just how much LIFE has happened. lol It is so exciting to see this update! I can't wait for the next set of videos. I'd love to see any videos you feel like making, but I am REALLY partial to things that have to do with food or local culture.
I'd say Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) or learning about Haiku can be very interesting. I haven't tried Ikebana but in the future, if I got a chance to study abroad in Japan, I'd def give it a go.
great to see you back recently! i wish i could remember when i started watching lol, it's definitely been years. for upload times, friday and sunday are both cool! and i always love "slice of life" type vlogs
Something I have been trying to look into is how to become a teacher in Japan. No, not an ALT. But a lead teacher at an International Baccalaureate school or some other type of school that hires foreigners and hopefully had a student focused approach. When I try to look information up I get a lot about ALTs and JET but that is not what I'm interested in!
Lore you are so sweet! you have such a positive energy and i really admire that. If a preschool teacher corrected my skills in a highly complex foreign language, i would be downright mad. On a side note, props for helping that little girl and her family!
Good to see you back! Excited about more language and life content! Guess I'll never (not never but not in the next few years) get PR cause I don't know if my previous jobs included the residence tax and I sure haven't paid it separately... (my current one does but it only did going in the second year of employment)... should I inquire about it at my current municipality for the one year that I didn't pay?
When I studied at Hokudai, I joined a club that combined (traditional) choir, taiko and traditional dance (the ones you can also see at those huge festivities). The dances often were accompanied by flute. If you like marching band and already know how to play a woodwind, something like taking part in these very traditional festivities seems like the perfect combination of your hobby and something VEEEERY Japanese 😅. Unfortunately I have no idea where to start looking for those clubs. Good luck on trying out new hobbies. As a mom myself, it can be difficult to squeeze in time for oneself.
whoa been here since JPN Uni i believe. can't believe it's been so long! hope everything has been good! i'd definitely like Friday. a good video to wind down the time. wouldn't mind seeing more language or talking to locals videos! hobby videos! just regular vlogs about everything really.
Loretta-chan!!!!! Otsu!!!!! I was literally talking about you the other day!! How your videos would help me in my Japanese learning journey!! It seems you and the fam are doing well after the earthquake. Glad to see you!!!!❤❤❤
Would it be fun to learn a craft that’s not as common? Bookbinding? Spinning silk or cotton? Indigo dyeing? Kintsugi? Getting involved in a local festival? Kumihimo? Just throwing ideas out to help you find something that sticks.
Kimono should be your new hobby! There’s a great ecosystem of kimono dressing teachers, sellers and wearers young and old and so much to learn. You’ll also project deep knowledge about the culture, and Japanese ppl will respect you even more for it. And you’ll be able to dress in kimono for your daughter’s 入学式 in a few years!! Most RUclipsrs upload on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning EST (New York time) bc most views happen on the weekend. You’re more likely to get your audience to watch right away during these times. Even if your audience isn’t US based, you’ll want to release at that time to catch the higher ad value American audience.
....at the door bell I heard you say "oosss" but I don't think I spelled it correctly. But I remember it means what's up. I'm starting to have flash backs from my stay in Japan 35 years ago😊
Maybe you could do some calligraphy and sell it online? And have that be a reason to take a class on it? I'd love to have some art like that. Friday works for me, but most days are fine. Thanks for sharing anything about your life! Can't believe your girl is nearly 2 already! Yay!
That thing you said about the language... 😭😂😂 I tell my clients that it's normal to forget stuff, especially if you haven't used it in forever. But it's funny how we the complex stuff and the simple stuff kinda slips away. I did miss you on Friday. 😅 Honestly whatever works for you is fine. Crazy baby girl is TWO!! 😢 Would love to hear about that job... 👀
Hi Loretta! I'm a new subscriber, came across your videos today and I'm loving the content (especially your most recent travel in wakayama)! I moved to japan last year, currently a seishain on a 5 year visa (im actually trying to change jobs right now though haha 😅). Your videos are so informative and wholesome-you bring the authentic vibes of what living in japan is like. Looking forward to more! Also I do kyudo every week and think it would be a great hobby for you to pick up!
Loretta-san, 明けましておめでとう to you and yours, and thank you for the updates! I've been watching since pre-little ones and Friday is great for videos if that works for you (Thursdays in the US). And I didn't know you played in the marching band (band people = cool)! I love seeing the Kyoto Tachibana Green Band at the Rose Bowl Parade each year. I'd love your focus and expertise on the special cultural highlights of each prefecture (especially including food). Looking forward to many more!😊
Welcome back. In terms upload days...any day that works for you is fine with me. As for what you should for your PR license, archery or photography of Japan
Friday is cool. Also didn’t get an update about the previous video which is strange since I’ve been subscribed since I was still in school. I’m such a language and culture nerd (though I focus on various countries in Asia) that I’d say the first two that came to mind is kyudo and shodo, mostly due to how much they were advertised to me in tours there. I never went on any as I had to work the flights forward and back but I’m happy you are out of the work situations and I hope you have a great new year!
I wish you the best of luck with future adventure's! Fridays are usually the best time to upload since its the weekend. Also i cant believe your babys 2 already!! Super Adorable
I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Invoice Seido. I became a Qualified Invoice Issuer last year and am still grappling with how to arrange filings and payments.
Friday works for me personally! Also all I'm hearing on your end is stress, and I'm sorry you've not been met with stability yet when it comes to the next steps. I'm looking into hobbies too unfortunately, and all I came up with is learning more languages which...isn't much to go off of. Lol.
If you do origami you can then teach it to your kids! you can also get into making the paper yourself! I have only ever done it in the US, but I am sure that you would be able to find so so so many resources actually in Japan.
Hobbies.... how accessible is making pottery in your area? Checking out ceramics/pottery is one of my favorite things to do when I visit Japan. I think it would be so fun to make some pieces!
Glad to know you weren't affected by the recent earthquake. Been here since the Difficulties of Japanese series Yeah, permanent residency is extremely hard to plan for and get. I'm finally up for it this year in spring after three years on the point based resident visa which is similar to the HSP visa. I meet all the requirements (language, personal, employment, etc.) except...MONEY. In most cases, applicants for expected to earn double the gross national income--that is roughly 65,000 USD in a society that earns a bit less than half that in my age group. Freelance income is taxed at 3.3% while salaried income is taxed at a progressive rate. So using freelance income or combining it with your salaried income works against you unless you pay an accountant to make the adjustments (and raise the amount you pay in taxes the following year 👀😒). It´s a mess here.
Omg you are a GEM. ❤️ Luck at us both all grown up! Wishing you the best of luck on your long term Japan dreams. Sounds like you're as buckled in as the rest of us 🤓🤓🤓
@@kemushichan well I am actually in South Korea (sorry I forgot to specify that). But yes it’s a very similar set of struggles to what you’re going through now. I’ve been comparing the process of getting PR between Korea, Japan, mainland China, and Taiwan…and Taiwan is bar far the easiest place to immigrate to, if I’m understanding correctly: stay employed for two years or more earning above minimum wage and staying out of trouble…that’s it lol there is currently no language requirement or deep cultural understanding requirement, but of course having those in place can only help the applicant’s case. But thanks, and I hope you guys are able to get PR in Japan. 明けましておめでとうございます。そして、頑張ってくださいよ! 새해 복 많이 받으세요. 화이팅
As far as personal cultural ties to Japan maybe pottery or mingei? I personally would love to study Japanese pottery practices if given the time and unlimited stay
Me and my partner are planning to move to Japan in a few months, but he has the great benefit of having access to the HSP visa as a software engineer! He really wants permanent residency ahha (he has been to Japan a few times and I studied at Sophia University for a year and majored in Japanese - it's not a totally random move!)

明けましておめでとうございます! 趣味は木版か書道にすれべどうでしょうか。 Wood block printing (scenery or characters) seems interesting.
I was involved in choir during my study abroad, and a good friend of mine did tea ceremony. Perhaps those might be of interest?
Hello! Long time fan :) I think you should learn aizome & sashiko to make cute bits for the babies.
Hobbies!!! Yes, Kyudo, tea ceremony and do a combo video with Samurai Matcha❤; Aikido(I have been taking it for years); Shodo;Naginata;cat cafe;....
Drop the videos on Friday or Saturday...that way I'll have more time to dive in and take notes. I'm planning to come to Japan this summer😊
The time you uploaded this video apparently works for me :D Hello!
Wow, ten years already passed? I been watching you for years. I'm loving your growth. We all just trying to learn how to adult, lol.
Loretta-chan!!!!! Otsu!!!!! I was literally talking about you the other day!! How your videos would help me in my Japanese learning journey!! It seems you and the fam are doing well after the earthquake. Glad to see you!!!!❤❤❤
Friday's for sure are great for me with new RUclips vids.
Would it be fun to learn a craft that’s not as common? Bookbinding? Spinning silk or cotton? Indigo dyeing? Kintsugi? Getting involved in a local festival? Kumihimo? Just throwing ideas out to help you find something that sticks.
This information is super helpful thank you!
Yay, you're back!! I missed you guys. And a new baby! What?! Congratulations! ❤❤❤
(And Friday is great.)
MADNESS
....at the door bell I heard you say "oosss" but I don't think I spelled it correctly.
Looking forward to many more!😊
Your an inspiration. Although my circumstances wont directly allow me to move to Japan. I'm still staying positive at the chance!
Haha I'm so tempted to title it THE TEA and sip green tea.
@@kemushichan Perfect XD!
I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Invoice Seido. I became a Qualified Invoice Issuer last year and am still grappling with how to arrange filings and payments.
Congrats my dude. I feel like I need to get my accountant and lawyer in for a Japan starter set video
Japan University era for me. You mentioned liking Card Capturer Sakura
Friday works for me personally! Also all I'm hearing on your end is stress, and I'm sorry you've not been met with stability yet when it comes to the next steps. I'm looking into hobbies too unfortunately, and all I came up with is learning more languages which...isn't much to go off of. Lol.
Its a great start though 🤫
If you do origami you can then teach it to your kids! you can also get into making the paper yourself! I have only ever done it in the US, but I am sure that you would be able to find so so so many resources actually in Japan.
Maybe get into Shamisen?
Welcome back!!
I would love you made a video about how was the process for the dependant visa of your husband ❤😊
I’ve been taking ikebana classes. Very fun, maybe a new hobby?
You could join one of the local festival community groups and perform
How about tea ceremony or akibana?
Hobbies.... how accessible is making pottery in your area? Checking out ceramics/pottery is one of my favorite things to do when I visit Japan. I think it would be so fun to make some pieces!
Glad to know you weren't affected by the recent earthquake. Been here since the Difficulties of Japanese series
Yeah, permanent residency is extremely hard to plan for and get.
Luck at us both all grown up!
He really wants permanent residency ahha (he has been to Japan a few times and I studied at Sophia University for a year and majored in Japanese - it's not a totally random move!)
hi im old. happy to see you back 🎉
Hi I was wondering if you were going to do a new video. Then I discovered that I did not subscribe 😮 I know I did, but any way I'm glad to see you. Good topic for this video😊
You could try ceramics or bonsai as a new hobby.
What about being a tea enthusiast?
Happy new year🎉
Anyday is good. Whatever works best for you. I also want permanent residence some day , as ive been here for over 14 years(high school/university) so i dont think it counts towards it.
