The comment about pants and shoes is so true! I’d recommend bringing lots of bras if you’re large chested, and if you have a larger body, just bring an entire wardrobe. Lose as much weight as you can (healthily) before moving there. Especially if you’re a woman over 5’6”. Shopping for clothes is going to be very difficult otherwise (as well as other challenges you would never experience as a larger person in the US).
Thank you for your transparency and honesty. Sometimes as a viewer, it appears that the one’s you admire have a perfect life. I never would’ve considered the pay difference and how that impacts financial planning. Anyways, I’m quite sure things will work out for you and your hubby.
Wish I had known about this before I moved here. One of the most under-shared tips when you move to Japan is to not buy new stuff! So many people come to Japan, buy all new stuff, and where does it go when they leave? To the resale groups and stores. There's a wonderful Facebook group (well, groups) called Tokyo Sayonara Sales the Original and Osaka Sayonara Sales. People sell awesome, well cared for furniture for super cheap because they are leaving Japan! They end up buying new because people don't know about these FB groups when they come, so they go to the expensive stores, stretching an already limited budget. There's no point, there's tons of stuff, furniture, household and kitchen items, heaters and fans available every day on those groups!
Most people who stay away from the dentist longer than 3 years end up with $3,000 or more in necessary dental treatment due to improper homecare and the American diet. When you realize 1 Crown is on average $1300 you see how easy it is to rack up a 10,000 bill when you dont care for your teeth.
Have you ever had a deep cleaning? A tooth extraction? A crown? How about a $6000 implant? Yes, one implant! Why be a neuro-surgeon & pay phenomenal liability insurance when you can be a dentist much quicker & make a killing in no time? I know there are good souls out there who do free dental work too. That isn't the majority. Dental fees are murder-1, esp. for the elderly, at least if your teeth matter to you.

This is such an old video that I hope you worked it out by now, but maybe my comment will help someone else? Hair in humidity. I'm in NQ so this is a problem here too. Coconut oil is the answer. Like the body oil one, or I use Palmer's. In the hair. My hair, is super fine, but blonde, so I can't leave it in like others seem to. What I do, is put the oil through my hair about an hour or two before I wash it, or overnight if it's really bad, and then shampoo/conditioner it out. Protects the scalp and stops the hair from frizzing. Straightens mine out a bit too much in the process. But if it's going super crazy, it's the best fix for really humid parts of the year. If you're able to leave it in, I think it's supposed to protect the hair from sun damage or something too.

These were some really good advice. I really regret not following through on moving to Japan in my 20's. All I heard was my mom's voice in my head callime useless and unable to do shit so I got depression instead. Today I know better but I'm not in a position to even travel anywhere. Had I listened to myself back then, I would probably have been much better of, or at least have had the experience of living somewhere else. So my advice is to go do the thing! Don't let insecurities limit you. It's scary to leave something familiar and start anew. Be brave. That's all I can say.
The health and dental thing - I would recommend going to one of those health clinics in Thailand. They have top-notch care and it’s not gonna cost you $10,000. You also get a groovy vacation out of the whole thing.
Konnichiwa Loretta!! I am applying for the Mext Scholarship! Wow! Seriously this is an amazing video. The things she speaks of you don't here others speak about. Especially the Doctor visits. I going to do ALL MY check ups and dentistry while I am here in Philippines where its dirt cheap!!
I lived in Japan for two years. Regarding the natural hair, do you know someone in the military? There are a lot of natural hair products on our base and also hair stylists that can do our curly hair.
I often saw you popping up on my Twitter feed everytime when people I follow liked your tweets. First time I clicked on a video AND YOU SEEM SO SWEET and I'll keep your advice in the back of my head ! Now I have to make time for watching your other videos .... :'D
About the hair thing. Idk if you're natural or not but how about trying silicone based or dehumectant products. Caution about the silicone-based products though: they will be more likely to cause buildup, so if you have a sensitive scalp, that may or may not agree with you. But it washes out easily enough. Also, try jojoba oil in your deep conditioning routine. The key to avoiding as much frizz as possible with hair is to make sure it's as moisturized as possible so it doesn't absorb as much moisture from the elements. It won't stop frizz and poofiness completely but it will certainly help.
JayAntoinette Thank you for the tips! :D I quietly transitioned to my true poodleform in these two years and am still figuring out which products work best. Deep conditioning every week but trying to find what actually sets in rather than just sits on top (like coconut oil does for me 😂)
Im just watching all these videos since ill be moving in japan when this whole pandemic calms down, just to get a new start since mental health, school and family things are really hard... thank you so much i learned a lot!
Hey Loretta! I was wondering if you were going to make a video about how you brought your dog to Japan, including all the steps and costs. I'd really love that because I'm moving to Japan for language school for some years and I want sooooo badly to bring my cat Nel with me!!! So if you could, a video on how to bring your pet to Japan would be super helpful!!! Thank you.
Kemushi chan.....my gosh, you're so beautiful. Like, your skin is glowing and your melanin is POPIN. Also, great video! I enjoy watching these after I get home from college and try to unwind :) thank you!
I'm fortunate because I rarely saw a doctor and went for a routine (free) checkup. I even asked them to check a bunch of additional stuff and...I am in perfect health. I also have no teeth work needed at all...but you know what, I still am brushing my teeth everyday and began flossing VERY consistently. Forget treating stuff after it happens, prevent it to begin with! Started exercising more, eating healthier...the whole 9 yards...and fortunately, still in perfect health and perfect teeth.
This is so right on. Good tips no one talks about. My parents moved us there with braces on our teeth!!! and didn't even consider what to do when we got there. They also left Japan a few years later with a huge US income tax bill. And they just left our family dog there too which still haunts me. Buying enough shoes, jeans and coats is a good idea. Can get tops easy. Just practical issues - my parents must have been lazy.🙄
FYI - some banks in the US have sister banks. I learned this through the French consulate when I was preparing to study in France. Unlike Loretta, I didn't have to do a thing. It was like banking at home, except in francs. Highly recommend going to the consulate for information about whatever you plan to do in another country - - study, work, vacation. And asks lots of questions before you go. Paying off your debt first is Really good advice.
BTW - I had to first notify my US bank that I was going abroad to study and had to fill out paperwork to allow me to bank from my home account while abroad.
When you mentioned the dental care, ironically that is what I’m doing right now! So far I’m towards the end of my treatment plan....😆so by the end of this year I should be ready to move to Japan!😊

Thyna Vu Do you have a Canadian passport? With a Canadian passport and a Bachelor's (in anything, anything works), you could get an English teaching job for a year and see how you like it. As an ALT (Assistant Language Teacher) you don't need to know any Japanese.
i did actually apply as an ALT two years ago through the JET program, but i didn't make it in ^^; thank you though! i might look into going laterally like loretta mentioned in another video, finding a japanese company with canadian operations and seeing if that's possible. or something! haha

Questions: What did you start with first when beginning the process of moving to Japan? What was the visa process like? What did you pack and how many suitcases did you bring? Did you get a phone, router, bank account prepared before moving? (You answered this one) What did you do for housing and transportation accommodations? Did you prepare as far as doctors in Japan and things along those lines? Any apps to suggested? How did you bring your pet with you? How long did it take you to prepare from your initial point of saving all the way to departing? Do you recommendation on a nice sum of money we should save? Also should we exchange currency before going?

Had I listened to myself back then, I would probably have been much better of, or at least have had the experience of living somewhere else.
So my advice is to go do the thing! Don't let insecurities limit you. It's scary to leave something familiar and start anew. Be brave. That's all I can say.
The health and dental thing - I would recommend going to one of those health clinics in Thailand. They have top-notch care and it’s not gonna cost you $10,000. You also get a groovy vacation out of the whole thing.
Very informal I love how you ain’t beat around the bush and actually tackled questions i my own self had
This is the most informative and helpful channel I have seen yet. You are a gift!
I'd recommend bringing undergarments from one's own country also.
I'm about to graduate, and I'm planning on working for a year and then move to Japan. Your tips were useful!
Joseito1875 saaame but I'm only in grade 11 lmao
@Adam Lau yup, I'm currently living and working in Japan!
@@Joseito1875 how is it going??
Thanks, this is useful. I plan on moving back to Japan when I'm at least 18
Congrats on your two years. I totally understand. Hope you are well

Konnichiwa Loretta!! I am applying for the Mext Scholarship! I have been interested in it since December when I started following you and watching your videos, after I got interested in japan during the summer before, and not the time is here to apply. I am applying and I have some questions, is there somewhere I can dm you so I don't like leak out my name and info all over, I have twitter and insta.
How long did you practice Japanese before going there?
日本語がペラペラですね…
i enjoy your sharing your life experiences … just found your channel… i was looking for a vlog to listen as well as to learn life experience… pls continue your good work in this video diary…👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
I found you through looking up JLPT advice but now I'm just having fun watching you talk about Japan, as I prepare to move out of there haha
WELCOME to this weird corner of the internet!
Wow! Seriously this is an amazing video. The things she speaks of you don't here others speak about. Especially the Doctor visits. I going to do ALL MY check ups and dentistry while I am here in Philippines where its dirt cheap!!
Not sure if I am going! I want it ! In case I go this may be very useful! Thanks for the info !
Good advice in general, no matter which country you move to.
Really great advice on stuff most other youtubers don't talk about.
I honestly think you’re one of the best and most helpful RUclipsrs in Japan. Thank you for your insight!! 😊👍
Deep conditioning every week but trying to find what actually sets in rather than just sits on top (like coconut oil does for me 😂)
great that you have not fallen apart :) Thanks for giving open and honest advice to people!
I rewatch this after see your graduation video, so inspiring
Love and Peace from Bali, 日本の生活頑張ってください!
I’m a Japanese! Your videos are interesting for me,and I study English through your videos !
Thank you.
Jun rp純 Working on it!!! 💪💪💪❤️
Loretta this is a great video idea :)!
(₌ㅇᆽㅇ₌) meooowww!
Yes please! I'm planning to take my dog with me too so any info on it would be useful!
Yay! A video is here!
Thanks for these, Loretta. We never realize what in all we need or take for granted .until we're thrust into the new territory.
i was truly feeling the commentary using your middle name. i learned real quick that its needed for EVERYTHING 😭
Nice Content Sis, greeting from Bandung City in Indonesia 🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩, nice to meet you
Kemushi chan.....my gosh, you're so beautiful. Like, your skin is glowing and your melanin is POPIN. Also, great video! I enjoy watching these after I get home from college and try to unwind :) thank you!
UUHHHHHHHG I feel you on the hair thing, girl. I went to japan for a few weeks in summer and I had bangs at the time and DIDNT KNOW WHAT TO DO!
7:04 live and learn. Words to live by. In Japan now. so many of these things you won't imagine until you get here.
When you mentioned the dental care, ironically that is what I’m doing right now! So far I’m towards the end of my treatment plan....😆so by the end of this year I should be ready to move to Japan!😊
PoptartKid have fun in Japan, I wish I could go. Maybe after law school I can live there for a while! 😊
Pay off student debt? Guess I won't be staying there for a long period of time ever. I can still visit though lol.
Could you do a series about learning how to do your hair/finding products in Japan?? I think that would be interesting!
このロレッタさんの動画は、とても重要で現実的な事を話しているので、もっとたくさんの人が見た方がいいと思いました。素晴らしい TIPS!
your videos are super inspiring! i'm 25 and still in school here in canada, i've dreamed about moving to japan even for just a year or two but i've always doubted i can since i don't have any great credentials and barely know any japanese. right now i doubt i'll ever be able to bite the bullet and make the move, but it's great to see others who are living the dream LOL
Thyna Vu Do you have a Canadian passport? With a Canadian passport and a Bachelor's (in anything, anything works), you could get an English teaching job for a year and see how you like it. As an ALT (Assistant Language Teacher) you don't need to know any Japanese.
i did actually apply as an ALT two years ago through the JET program, but i didn't make it in ^^; thank you though! i might look into going laterally like loretta mentioned in another video, finding a japanese company with canadian operations and seeing if that's possible. or something! haha
You're Canadian? Lucky you! That means you can get a Working Holiday visa & stay a year over there. I don't think you even need a BA for that.
@@MajorG25 oh what is this you speak of and why are you able to do this in Canada?
This is really good advice! I'm glad I know I won't have some of these problems but the rest I should definitely consider.
Thank you so much for all the advice ! You are helping so many people like me :) ありがとうございます
even if english was the native language, these things are a major inconvenience and time-consuming.
cetriya's Art n Comics Channel I'm subbing. I like the colors
Thanks for the tips. I will move to Japan by April 2022. I keep watching youtube tips to ease my anxiety caused by waiting for Certificate of Eligibility and Student Visa. I hope I make it to Japan by next year.
This is pure gold! Thanks for your transparency!! Happy move'iversary!
Number 8 really hit me haha. I have no clue about how to talk about bills and such, but just learned last night how to say “question mark” and “exclamation mark” haha.
THANK YOU!!!
I wanted to know these types of things for so long. If you think of more please, please, please, please make another video! 😫
Questions:
What did you start with first when beginning the process of moving to Japan?
What was the visa process like?
What did you pack and how many suitcases did you bring?
Did you get a phone, router, bank account prepared before moving? (You answered this one)
What did you do for housing and transportation accommodations?
Did you prepare as far as doctors in Japan and things along those lines?
Any apps to suggested?
How did you bring your pet with you?
How long did it take you to prepare from your initial point of saving all the way to departing?
Do you recommendation on a nice sum of money we should save? Also should we exchange currency before going?
@kemushichan Loretta, I like her first three questions :). Definitely look into a video for those ?'S
This is so cute. TWO of my brothers live in Japan. I have never been, but hear it is beautiful
Comeeee!!
@@kemushichan I've been trying to get there for years. One has been there about 15 years now...the other about 6. I'm trying to visit next year for sure!
@@thejasminediaz I bet they'd be really thrilled to show you around. Japan is pretty stunning, and it's such a blast to be able to show it off to your family!
This was just ridiculously fun to watch! Having spent two months in Japan over the past two years, I totally "get" where you're coming from! So helpful!
Granted, I was a tourist, not living there, so many of these tips were not entirely useful to me, but still!!
Hontone sugoi! Arigato gozaimashita! Ganbatte!
That's out girl!!!! Keepin it real and hangin on tight!!!!!!!!! So much love to you Loretta!!!🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you so much for this. I just got a lot of CC cards. Not maxed out but it's good to hear about being cautious of them.
Thank you so much for your lovely tips
Great tips, I'm terrible at doing things ahead so I watch videos when I should be doing them and rush at last minute and make lots of similar mistakes and pay through the roof for them and watch more videos about what I should be doing ahead instead of doing those things...
Im still trying to work on learning how to move outside of the U.S. to japan so i can go to language school. lol These are things i need to know for sure. I definitely have to work on my spending habits
You're editing! I love it!!
Love all the titles and music! It's the little things that set you apart!
I’m 23 years old and I want to move to Japan, but finding valuable resources and work contact in Japan is difficult. I’ve been studying Japanese for 6 months and will be visiting in the Fall for a month.
I want to move to Japan before 30. I know what field of work I want to work in and I found some companies hiring and have their recruiting emails, but I am intimidated weather or not they will hire foreigner’s. Still lots of things I don’t know. Thank you for sharing valuable information!
Ah yeah, I get it! It can be really hard to grasp from abroad, too. I think your upcoming trip will be really enlightening!
@@kemushichan Yes! After my trip I can get a feel for the culture, people and atmosphere. Then I can set a goal.
@@JA_0143 there might even be events or meetups like on meetup.com you can join to try and network
Number 4 is really important!
When I lived in Japan, I had to learn how to braid my own hair. My mom would be so annoyed when I asked her to send products over. Your videos remind me of my time over there. Now I want to go back with my family in tow. I hope they will enjoy the time when we do go.
Thanks for sharing your experience and advice.... you nailed some good life lessons.
Your video applies to anywhere you move. Including moving from California to Nebraska for example. I totally feel you.
Thank you for the advice. I have decided and started the process of looking for a region in Japan to where I would like to live. I plan to move in a year. And needed to watch this so I know what loose ends to tie up!
In england, we dont use credit cards unless its urgent, we normally use debit carda
All the things that you’ve mentioned are so relevant x thank you for sharing
This was a SUPER helpful video! Thank you!
This was awesome. I have family in Japan and go there at least 3 times per year. I have been traveling to Japan off and on since 1986 with the majority being done 2002 to present. You are awesome and so positive I will have to have my daughters (3) watch this video. Two of my daughters go to school in Japan and you would be a great role model for them. Maybe I will see you on one of my trips. By the way my Japanese is crap -- so sad!!
These tips were so practical and real! Thanks for the insight! 😊
Oh girl, I gave up on hair really fast when I first moved to Japan in the summer. That heat and my hair were determined to not cooperate. Now I've watched enough youtube videos to learn how to braid my hair through this hot heat and rainy weather so needless to say I understand!
That is some great advise. I'm learning Japanese now and planning a trip to Japan next summer. Also, I'm like you in regards to avoiding the doctor. Just don't like them, but I gotta get in and see what they say about my health....sigh, lol
It's seriously been two years?! I feels like less than a year to me... all very good points. My husband and I have been considering moving when he finishes his contract... we shall see
Very helpful video, you should do a Q and A about moving and living in Japan
You seem extremely nice and not delusional (like most people living in Japan and making RUclips videos) at all really!
💖💖💖
This was really informative and seems genuinely useful. Nicely done!
Loretta you’re so cute
Cute? She's ga-ga gorgeous! Those eyes!!!! And she probably thinks she's just so-so. Boomer's got a keeper, that's for sure.
